State wise data released by the Indian Medical Association (<keyword id="8507" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMA">IMA</keyword>) show that a total of 594 doctors have lost their lives during the second wave of COVID-19. Majority of these doctors belonged to the states of Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. More than 1,300 doctors have died since the pandemic began last year, of which 747 were during the first wave of the pandemic. Delhi reported that 107 doctors died on duty, according to the IMA data, which was released on June 2. Meanwhile, Bihar lost 96 doctors, and 67 succumbed to the Coronavirus infection in Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan recorded the death of 43 doctors and the data shows that Jharkhand lost 39 doctors. So far, India has reported 2.82 crore cases of COVID-19 and 3.32 lakh deaths since the pandemic began, out of which Delhi has reported 14.3 lakh cases and a total of 24,237 deaths and Bihar reported 7.07 lakh cases and 5,163 deaths. India has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world. For the frontline health care workers, India’s central government has announced a new system of processing the insurance under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) — Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting COVID-19’. The country’s health ministry stated that claims would be certified by the district collectors and will be settled in 48 hours after the approval. “This order is aimed at cutting down delays and to further streamline and simplify the processing of the insurance claims,” said the ministry. According to the statement, he passed away at 11.30 pm on Monday after a "lengthy battle with COVID-19". "Even during the pandemic, he made constant efforts to educate the masses and was able to reach out to 100 million people through numerous videos and educational programmes and saved countless lives. He wanted his life to be celebrated and not mourned," the statement said. Eminent cardiologist Dr. KK Aggarwal succumbs to COVID-19

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday expressed concern over the deteriorating air quality in the national capital which has coincided with the spike in Covid-19 cases. The apex medical association of private practitioners estimated that 13 per cent of the rise in Covid cases occurred due to the severely bad air quality in Delhi while adding that it has increased the severity of the virus infection among patients. "Environmental air pollution is one of the most important social determinants of health. The air pollution damages the inner lining of lungs and hence increases the severity of Covid-19 infection. In the last few days Delhi has reported more than 6,000 coronavirus cases everyday. 13 per cent of the increase has been estimated to be due to the pollution," the IMA stated. The association said that the situation has worsened not just for patients of respiratory illnesses but healthy people as well. It also advised that people should avoid morning walks since pollution is at its peak during this time of the day. "Increased air pollution leads to increased inflammatory response and patients who are sensitive to respiratory diseases may find it difficult to breathe if the AQI is between 50 to 100. "An AQI of above 300 makes it difficult not only for people with respiratory problems, but healthy people as well. Hence, it is advisable that people do not go out early in the morning when pollution levels are the highest. Merely walking could result in health complications due to the high concentration of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 in Delhi's air," the IMA explained. The medical association also said that elderly people and children are more likely to develop infections and allergies due to smog. "Poor air quality may result in the aggravation of asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), high blood pressure and even cardiovascular diseases," it added. It noted that N-95 masks and air purifiers may not provide full protection until curbs are put on major sources of air pollution in Delhi such as vehicular, industrial and powerhouse emissions, construction, burning of agricultural and municipal wastes, and mining in the Aravalli hill areas. While stressing the need for the implementation of long-term measures to curb air pollution, the IMA suggested a few measures to improve the air quality in Delhi like the use of public transport, using solar powered, energy efficient products and recyclable products, planting gardens etc. The dreaded season of air pollution has returned in Delhi-NCR. The Epidemic Diseases Act is a century-old law enacted when Bombay (Mumbai) was hit by Bubonic plague. Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava launched the "Corona Helpline for Delhi Police" through video-conferencing. The helpline numbers -- 9999672238 and 9999672239 – will be available during working hours on all days of the week, police said. Delhi Police personnel and their family members can use the helpline to seek medical counselling from doctors about prevention and handling of coronavirus cases, a senior police officer. With over 850 Delhi police personnel getting infected with the coronavirus so far and nine succumbing to the disease caused by it, there was a pressing need for such facility, he said. AMP TIR TIR

IMA opens coronavirus helpline for Delhi police personnel, families

Taking a dim view of abusive behaviour towards healthcare professionals amid the nationwide lockdown, the Indian Medical Association (<keyword id="8507" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMA">IMA</keyword>) has called for observance of a 'White Day' on Wednesday and a nationwide 'Black Day' protest on Thursday. The IMA wrote a letter on Monday to all its current and past office-bearers to issue directions to different hospitals and health workers to light candles on hospital premises as a symbol of protest and vigil on Wednesday. "Let not our white become red," the IMA warned, and demanded enactment of a central law through an ordinance for the protection of healthcare professionals and guarantee for a safe workplace. "If the government fails to enact a central law on violence against doctors and hospitals even after a white alert, the IMA will observe a 'Black Day' on Thursday," it said. The association said that all doctors in the country will sport black badges on Thursday as a mark of protest. "A decision on the further course of action will be taken if suitable steps are not taken by the government even after 'Black Day'. The 'White Alert' is only a warning," said the association. the IMA said that it had so far observed the utmost restraint and patience in spite of extreme provocations. "Doctors have been abused, beaten up, denied entry to their residences. Obstruction in cremation is the last straw that the IMA can bear," Dr Rajan Sharma, IMA President, said in the letter. "If dignity is denied even in death, our patience and restraint lose their value. Top medial association wants to observe white day and black day to protest abuse

Ahmedabad, Apr 21 () At least 28,000 doctors inGujarat will join the Indian Medical Association's call for acandlelight vigil on April 22 to protest against violence anddiscrimination faced by medical practitioners treating COVID-19 patients, an official said on Tuesday.As many as 28,000 doctors from across the state willtake part in a candlelight vigil at their respective places at9 pm on April 22, secretary of the IMA's Gujarat chapter DrKamlesh Saini said."The call was given by the IMA headquarters afterseveral cases of violence and discrimination against doctorswere reported across the country. In Chennai, locals evenrefused burial to a doctor who had died treating coronaviruspatients. Many doctors are abused, threatened and denied entryto their residences because they are doing their duty," Sainisaid. Several mourners attend funerals of people who havedied of other ailments and hospitals have been releasingbodies without conducting COVID-19 tests on them, posing agreat health risk, president of IMA Thane Dr Dinkar Desaistated in a release. There have been cases in Maharashtra's Thane city,where deceased persons have tested positive for the virus andthe administration had to track down mourners and other high-risk contacts in such cases, he said. At least for the next couple of months, funeralsshould be held in the presence of the police, with not morethan five people in attendance, Dr Desai suggested. Itanagar, Apr 9 () Thousands of people in ArunachalPradesh have posed for photographs wearing protective masksand shared them on social media, in response to an awarenesscampaign launched by the state chapter of Indian MedicalAssociation (IMA), amid the growing COVID-19 threat.Overwhelmed with the response, the IMA state unitpresident, Dr Lobsang Tsetim, said that masks, if worn by all,will help reduce virus transmission by 80 per cent."Studies have shown that wearing a face maskdrastically reduces the chances of COVID-19 transmission. Ithas also been documented by the Czech Republic that masks, ifmade mandatory for every individual in a society, virustransmission could drastically reduce by about 80 per cent,"Tsetim said.More than 5,000 netizens were found to have uploadedtheir photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday -hours after the campaign - #Mask4Arunachal was launched bythe association.Dr Minggam Pertin, the state unit general secretary ofthe IMA, requested people to stitch disposable masks at home,instead of hoarding the N95 variety - primarily used bydoctors, nurses and other healthcare workers."Given the shortage in supply of masks, we areappealing to all weavers, tailors, NGOs, self-help groups andindividuals to come up with their own do-it-youself ideas. Bengaluru, Jun 13 () The coronavirus induced lockdown over the past two months proved to be harrowing for a majority of the victims of the Rs 4,000 crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) ponzi scam, with some of them saying they had to depend on others for their day-to-day needs. After losing all the money in the IMA group entities in 2019, the biggest challenge for the duped investors was survival during the coronavirus related lockdown. Mohammed Mansoor Khan who operated the ponzi scheme in Bengaluru, lured people, proming huge returns. Besides a large number of Muslims, many Hindus and Christians too invested in the firm, sources said. A CBI probe has shown that IMA group entities headed by Mansoor Khan had raised illegal and unauthorised deposits in an alleged dishonest and fraudulent manner from innocent investors to the tune of over Rs 4,000 crore. "To win the trust of people, Khan gave huge returns initially, which the investors had never expected. Soon, his firm became very popular and people started investing huge money," said an officer in the Special Investigation Team formed by the then H D Kumaraswamy-led coalition government, which had initially probed the case. Almost 85 per cent of the investors were from Karnataka while others belonged to different parts of the country including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Delhi. Tears rolled down his cheeks as Salim Basha, a resident of Hubballi, recalled how he coped with the situation during the lockdown. "I had saved Rs 3 lakh for the marriage of my niece, which I invested in the IMA.I had no inkling that I would be cheated," Basha said. He said he was not in a position to do the job of even a security guard due to age related ailments while his only son who worked in a small company did not get the salary during the lockdown. "For the first time in my life I had to depend on others for food," Basha narrated his agony. The lockdown compounded their woes, he added. Rajesh Naik and his brother Kishore Naik, who live in Bengaluru, had saved about Rs 50 lakh from their hard earned income. Instead of investing in banks, mutual funds or post offices, they opted to deposit it with the IMA on the advice of their friend. "....now we don't have a penny.During the lockdown, we could not pay our house rent despite being threatened by the house owner..," the Naik brothers said. Another victim, Razia Amin said her family members and relatives had lost approximately Rs 80 lakh which they had invested in the company. "While I managed to sail through the lockdown smoothly because of my job, some of my relatives who are living in abject poverty led a hand-to-mouth situation. Arranging two square meals was difficult for them," she recalled. "Difficulties have now been somewhat minimised with the easing of restrictions," she added. About 25 people have been arrested in the case including the seven directors of the IMA group. The Central Bureau of Investigation recently sought permission from the state government to prosecute an IAS officer, two IPS officers, a Karnataka Administrative Service officer and a few other government employees who had misled the government on the IMA case and had given a clean chit to the ponzi scheme. According to CBI sources,the IAS officer along with two other officers allegedly collected Rs 1.5 crore to hush up the case. While the probe is on, the victims are clueless whether they would get their money back. "Whether you hang him (Mansoor Khan) or pardon him is not our concern, we want our money back. He operated his ponzi scheme right under the nose of the government, so the government has to ensure that our money is returned," Salim Basha said. The case came to light when Mohammed Mansor Khan fled to Dubai, leaving behind a video message, saying he was committing suicide because of "corruption in the state and central governments." Khan was arrested on July 19 last year on his arrival in New Delhi. He had allegedly promised returns ranging from 2.5 to 3 per cent per month to the investors.
