<ul><li>Eight of India’s premier IITs featured in top 200 in the <keyword id="421975" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings">QS World University Rankings</keyword>: Asia 2020. </li><li><keyword id="666989" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Indore">IIT Indore</keyword> has crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. </li><li>The top four elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. </li></ul>Eight of India’s premier IITs featured in top 200 in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020. But IIT Indore has turned out to be the only institution that has shown a positive trend. The institute crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. Nevertheless, the domestic demand for tertiary education of its young population — which is estimated to become the world’s largest by 2030 — is growing more rapidly than the expanded provision,” Ben Sowter, director of research at QS <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/qs-rankings-8-india-universities-in-asia-top-100-iit-bombay-34th-6140356/">said</a>. India’s IIT Indore crawls up by 53 places in the top 200 Asian universities while 8 other IITs drop

As the first phase of placements at IITs comes to a close, trends highlight a lot about how India's premier institutes fared in this recruitment season. 
 
While several big ticket companies stayed off campuses and international offers took a hit this time, the younger IITs had the last laugh as they fared much better than the older ones in terms of salaries and international offers to students. A lot of other interesting points came out. 
 
Here's all you need to know about the IIT placements that just concluded: 
 
Number of job offers dwindled 
These are mostly the older IITs like Kharagpur and Kanpur which have registered a significant slump in recruitments. At IIT-Kharagpur, the number of offers came down to 1,080 from 1,300 in 2016 while IIT-Kanpur saw the number fall to 725 from 800. IIT Roorkee made an exception - the number of recruiters visiting the campus was up to 243 from last year's 180 while the total number of offers were almost the same as last year, at about 680. The reason for this is being seen as: 
 
Offers per company saw a decline At IIT-Mumbai, Madras and Guwahati, the number of total offers went up, but offers per company were fewer than previous years. Large recruiters like Coal India, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> and <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> were particularly conservative in handing out letters. At <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>, average number of offers from each recruiter was down by about 15 per cent compared to last year. 
 
Many companies like Boston Consultancy Group, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft, which had hired in huge numbers from the campus last year, radically cut the number of recruits. Several opted for pre-placement offers instead of coming to the campus and holding interviews. Those students who had already joined them as interns were given full-time placement offers. 
 
Top recruiters stayed off IIT campuses At IIT Roorkee, officials blamed the absence of bigtime recruiter <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> for the total number of offers going down to 700 from 2015's 740. Google chose to hire off-campus. <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, after its strained relations with IITs for deferring campus offers in the previous placements, was nowhere to be seen this time around. <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> stayed off-campus too. 
 
Top offers not too high Not many croreplus packages were handed out this time. The number fell by more than 50 per cent since 2014. Plunging international offers from US firms and the likes of <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and Google going off-campus is being seen as the reason behind this. Moreover, Cost to company among the international offers made by companies like Oracle barely crossed Rs 1.2 crore this year (inclusive of bonuses and stock options) compared to Rs 2 crore-plus in 2014. 
 
Newer IITs had the last laugh Newer IITs saw an increase in top as well as average salaries. <keyword id="666989" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Indore">IIT Indore</keyword>, Ropar and Mandi received their first international offers this year, with salaries touching as high as Rs 40 lakh a year. At IIT Hyderabad, there were 16 offers for international positions. At <keyword id="642435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Mandi">IIT Mandi</keyword>, four students got international offers from a Japanese company. An IIT student Patna bagged an international offer of Rs 35 lakh. The highest salary at IIT Indore increased from Rs 28 lakh last year to more than Rs 30 lakh, at Hyderabad it increased by Rs 4 lakh to Rs 38 lakh. Also, one of the big recruiters at IITs, Amazon, was seen visiting 17 IITs including the young ones in Indore, Jodhpur and Bhubaneswar this year. 
 
PSUs made a stunning comeback 
Public sector units returned to the IITs post the ban on PSU hiring from campuses was lifted. Companies like Coal India, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and Bharat Petroleum visited colleges early in the placement season. For the first time, IIT Delhi, Madras and Roorkee gave day 1 slots to PSUs and the companies obliged by offering double digit salaries to students in the first two weeks of placements.

This includes the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT). However, the surprise entrant was Coimbatore’s <keyword id="784119" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amrita-Vishwa-Vidyapeetham">Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham</keyword>, which also featured in the Eminence scheme of the Human Resource &amp; Development ministry. This is followed by IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay at the 32nd and 34th positions respectively. The Indian institutions in the list are IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Indore, IIT Madras, IIT Ropar and IIT Kanpur. Saudi Arabia’s growth came despite it being a new entrant in the rankings after it gained the status of ‘secondary emerging’ last year. India also falls in the category of secondary emerging economies. The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. The rankings are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. IITs, IISc and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham among the 11 universities in THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020

<ul><li><keyword id="6513530" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-higher-education">Times Higher Education</keyword> (THE) recently rolled out world university rankings featuring six Indian universities in the top 500. </li><li>Among the Indian institutions, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay were ranked in the top 500 in the global list. </li><li>Globally, the <keyword id="150557" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword>, United Kingdom, California Institute of Technology, United States and <keyword id="127583" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Cambridge">University of Cambridge</keyword>, UK were the top performers in the rankings. </li></ul>Indian universities are yet to make a mark on a global scale. Their international rank has slipped further this year, according to The World University Rankings 2020. Among the Indian institutions, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay were ranked in the top 500 in the global list. However, even these elite institutions from India did not make it to the top 300. This happened for the first time in the last seven years — despite an increase in the number of Indian institutions featuring on the list. Yet, the list editors believe that India has a lot of potential. “The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. Only six Indian institutes featured in top 500 global university rankings

It also has research labs and strong industrial partnerships. IIT Ropar has 13 female students for every 87 male students. India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

It has improved its rank from 501-600 rank to 401-500 this year. This improvement is due to higher for its industry income (73.9 points) and teaching (48.5 points). The rankings are analysed on the basis of the score points for its teaching, industry income, research, international outlook and citations. The institute has one female student corresponding to every four male students. The institute particularly offers courses in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Textile Technology. The six Indian universities that featured in the top 500 list includes Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. “The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration. It needs to back them up with high levels of investment and increasing global competition,” THE rankings editor Ellie Bothwell <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indian-universities-out-of-top-300-in-global-rankings/articleshow/71089023.cms">told</a> TOI. Globally, the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, California Institute of Technology, United States and University of Cambridge, UK were the top performers in the rankings.

India’s IIT Delhi now ranks in top 500 world university rankings

<ul><li>As many as 11 Indian universities featured in the top 100 list of the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020. </li><li>A surprise entrant <keyword id="784119" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amrita-Vishwa-Vidyapeetham">Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham</keyword> from Coimbatore was ranked at 90th position. </li><li>Engineering students at the institute are also attracting high pay packets. This year, it placed 80% of the batch — with Atlassian offering the highest salary at ₹52 lakh per annum. </li><li>It has comparatively higher intake of international students at 12% — against merely 2% at the iconic engineering and research institutions like IITs and IISc. </li></ul>As many as 11 Indian universities featured in the top 100 list of the <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2020/emerging-economies-university-rankings#!/page/0/length/25/name/amrita%20/sort_by/stats_number_students/sort_order/desc/cols/stats">Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020</a>. While the list includes the iconic Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) — it also featured a surprise entrant Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham from Coimbatore. Ranked at 90th position, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham entered the top 100 for the very first time — crawling up 51 spots from last year. <keyword id="1582424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="THE-Rankings">The rankings</keyword> are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook. Hefty pay packets Recruiters like Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon and McKinsey &amp; Co too have been flocking this 16-year old university. This year, the institute placed 80% of its engineering batch and its salary is comparable to the elite IITs and NITs at ₹52 lakh per annum — offered by Atlassian. Cisco hired 27 students at ₹29 lpa while Amazon hired seven students at ₹28 lpa. “With more than 80 reputed companies visiting the campus since the placement season began in July 2019, more than 82% of B.Tech students are already placed in various organisations with good salary packages as per industry standards,” The New Indian Express<a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2020/feb/02/80-amrita-engg-students-get-placement-2097842.html"> reported </a>citing the institute’s statement. International students flock The institute, which was also featured in the Eminence scheme of the Human Resource &amp; Development ministry (MHRD) improved on average score and performance parameters such as industry income and international outlook, as per the Times Higher Education. It has comparatively higher intake of international students at 12% — against merely 2% at the iconic engineering and research institutions like IITs and IISc. The performance growth may be attributed to its international partnership for bilateral governmental research programmes. It has research collaborations with over 20 US universities across areas like cyber security. The university also has associations with European and Japanese institutions. “The Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 suggests that real progress is being made by a number of institutions in a number of metrics across our robust methodology, and could mark an exciting turning point for Indian higher education, enabled in part by the Institutes of Eminence scheme,” said Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer, THE. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has over 14,000 engineering and research students overseen by more than 1,700 faculty staff. That means, merely over 11 students per staff member. Founded in 2003, <keyword id="397381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amrita-University">Amrita University</keyword> has campuses spread across Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Kochi, Mysore in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. India Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been ranked 16th among the global universities scoring 55.3 points for its research practices. Among other institutions on THE list are IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Indore, IIT Madras, IIT Ropar and IIT Kanpur.

If we rewind around four to five years, there was indeed a difference between old and new IITs and many aspirants would always opt for the older, more established ones with glittering salaries. 
 
But gone are those days as new IITs like Hyderabad, Indore, Ropar, Mandi and Gandhinagar are also getting better job offers and the line is diminishing between old and new IITs. 
 
Many companies including Flipkart, eBay, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra are visiting campuses of newer IITs, which are getting even 100 per cent placements. 
 
There is also a rise in average salaries this year. 
 
"At the undergraduate level, most companies don't differentiate between older and newer IITs in terms of salary. So the average salary we get is comparable to that of the older IITs and our numbers are improving year-on-year," B Venkatesham, faculty-in-charge for training and placement cell at IIT Hyderabad, told ET. 
 
"Since last three years, we have been achieving 100 per cent placements. Also since last two years, the gap is narrowing down every year compared to old IITs," Nirmala Menon, assistant professor at IIT Indore, told ET. 
 
Students have become more optimistic and this upward trend will also attract aspirants to new IITs. 
 
Reportedly, the highest package at IIT Hyderabad to date is Rs 35 lakh. 
 
"We will be hiring around 50 graduate engineers from the new IITs compared to 40 from the old IITs. We are offering roles predominantly in R&amp;D, product development &amp; other critical areas," Rajeshwar Tripathi, chief people officer, auto &amp; farm sector, at M&amp;M, told ET.

Old isn’t gold for these companies. They are thronging newer IITs with better job offers, pay packages

KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Where is the country’s top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL), <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> at the end of the first phase of this placement season. 
 With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest <keyword id="41007" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="recruiter">recruiter</keyword>, Samsung is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>. 
 
The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. 
 
“We focused on campus hiring for multiple reasons — strengthening our core competency in embedded computing and building new skills/capabilities in UX design, enterprise software and data analysis,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a written response to ET. Out of 243 candidates selected for India, 211 are <keyword id="821920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="from-software">from software</keyword> engineering and 19 from UX design. 
 RIL, another regular recruiter, made 177 offers, lower than last year’s 202. Students have been taken on in the roles of graduate <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> trainees (GETs). 
 
“Other than some 45 PPOs, RIL has hired 132 students from 8 IITs – Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kanpur and IITBHU. In addition to this, Reliance Jio hired 5 GETs, one from IIT-Hyderabad and 4 from IIT-Indore,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson in a written response. 
 
These numbers reflect hiring at the end of the first phase of the placement season in which roughly 50-60% of the batches have been placed across IITs. The second phase will start in the first week of January and will cover the remaining students. 
 
Tech major Oracle was another big recruiter, taking on close to 135 students across almost all IITs. While its overall campus hiring numbers remained fairly consistent over the last three years, it made a few US-based offers for the first time this year. 
 
“Oracle has a number of different business groups internally and we hire students across a variety of positions. 
 Many students will join Oracle, working in product development roles across our hardware, software or industry-specific based groups,” said a <keyword id="154054" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="company-spokesperson">company spokesperson</keyword>. 
 E-commerce major Flipkart, as reported earlier by ET, has been a big draw at the IITs during the first phase of placements. The company increased hiring from around 100 last year to 118. “Campus hiring is strategic for us. It helps us identify and bring new talent,” <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, co-founder, Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“Past experience has shown us that talent from tier-I colleges like the IITs and IIMs and the way they meet the challenges posed by a high-growth environment like ours has been remarkable -- and a great fit for an organisation like Flipkart that stresses on ownership and innovation,” added Bansal. 
 
Several other companies emerged as strong recruiters, according to hiring data from six of the older IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur and Guwahati. 
 Business process outsourcing company <keyword id="369930" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="EXL-Service">EXL Service</keyword>, for instance, made 97 offers across 7 IITs this year compared to just 46 across 5 IITs last placements. The increase in the number of campus hires in the roles of consultants and analysts is to power the company’s analytics business, which has been growing at more than 30% for the last few years.
