Hatch, a protégé of Henry Ford's, first conceived his eponymous hatchback — a smaller vehicle with a flip-up cargo door that would become a popular, more spacious alternative to the regular sedan for decades to come.Hatch, of course, would die before his invention truly took off. But his legacy lives on in icons like the Volkswagen Golf, named for Hatch's favorite ball.Eight decades on, in a time when hatchbacks are falling out of fashion in favor of taller SUVs, I paid my respects to the old, forgotten innovator by testing out the 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback. OK — none of that is true. Except for the last part. <div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1763" width="2500" msid="90173559" hostid="261"></div>Mazda loaned me a top-of-the-line Mazda 3 hatch last month, and it was an excellent mix of sleek looks, driving fun, and cargo-hauling capability. The $36,000 Premium Plus version I drove felt like it punched well above its price point with comforts like leather seats; a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel; satisfying knobs; and a handy head-up display that projects important information like your speed and blind-spot status onto the windshield.The car was impressive, but it also made me sad. Hatchbacks have been heading for extinction in the US for years, but I never truly understood what we stand to lose until I lived with the sporty Mazda for a week. <div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90173560" hostid="261"></div>In just the last few years in the US, Kia axed the hatchback version of its Elantra, Honda stopped selling the fan-favorite Fit, and Toyota canceled the Yaris. Ford <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2018/04/26/ford-has-been-synonymous-with-cars-for-more-than-a-century-thats-about-to-change/">stopped selling sedans</a> and hatchbacks altogether, spelling the end for the Fiesta and Focus. That's just a small sampling. Carmakers have pivoted toward selling an increasing variety of SUVs (often called crossovers), which have supplanted sedans, hatchbacks, and station wagons as the ride of choice for most Americans. In 2021, crossovers and larger SUVs made up <a href="https://www.nada.org/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=21474865289">roughly 55%</a> of light vehicle sales. Regular cars accounted for a little over 20%, <a href="https://www.autoweek.com/news/a1714156/light-trucks-take-record-69-us-market/">down from half</a> in 2013. <div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1532" width="2500" msid="90173561" hostid="261"></div>The unfortunate thing is: A hatchback like the Mazda 3 can do nearly everything a small crossover can. In some ways, it can do those things a whole lot better. The Mazda 3 is loads of fun to drive, particularly when you switch it into Sport mode. Acceleration is quick thanks to a 2.5-liter, turbocharged engine rated at 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Steering is precise and confident overall. There are high-performance crossovers out there, but physics is on the side of hatchbacks like the 3 — a lower center of gravity lends itself to better handling and a sportier drive. <div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90173562" hostid="261"></div>Hatchbacks also tend to get <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/cars-efficient-newer-suvs-65096517">better fuel economy</a> than small SUVs, while being just as practical and roomy. I had no problem chucking multiple duffel bags, backpacks, and beach chairs into the Mazda 3's cargo area. The Mazda 3 hatch isn't huge by any means, but fold down the rear seats and it can swallow up a sizable Ikea haul. One of the major selling points of crossovers is their elevated ride height, which gives drivers better visibility over the road. Although you can't rely on driver-aiding technology exclusively, the Mazda 3's suite of safety features gives a good sense of what's going on in surrounding traffic. (One knock to the Mazda 3 hatch: It has some pretty big blind spots.)Plus, how often does a crossover owner really go off-road and make full use of all that extra ground clearance?<div type="image" title="The 2022 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback." height="1779" width="2500" msid="90173566" hostid="261"></div>Much like the parent whose teenage son has come home from Derek's house with "allergies" one too many times, I'm not mad that everyone loves SUVs these days. I'm just disappointed. Sporty hatchbacks like the Mazda 3 Turbo bring a lot to the table that crossovers generally don't, and it'd be sad to see them go. Fortunately, the hatches most prized by car enthusiasts seem to be hanging on. Volkswagen axed the regular Golf for the US, but spared the sportier <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/review-38000-vw-gti-can-still-work-magic-on-me-2020-9">GTI</a> and R versions. Hyundai canceled the quirky, three-door Veloster after 2021, but the zippier Veloster N is still kicking. So the best hatches — Mazda 3 Turbo included — may have a chance yet.

The $36,000 Mazda 3 Turbo hatchback showed me SUVs aren't always the answer

Luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz India on Friday launched the hatchback 'AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+' priced at Rs 79.50 lakh (ex-showroom all-India). According to the company, the hatchback is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km per hour in only 3.9 seconds. However, the top speed is electronically limited to 270 km per hour. The newly launched hatchback complements the 'A-Class' product portfolio comprising 'A-Class Limousine', 'AMG A35 sedan' and the 'Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4M+ hatch'. "With the launch of the most powerful and most dynamic new generation sports car in our portfolio, we are strongly reinforcing the importance of this segment in our overall growth strategy," said Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India. Mercedes-Benz India launches new luxury hatchback, priced at ₹80 lakh

Tata Motors launches premium hatchback Altroz's i-Turbo variant, starts at ₹8.25 lakh

Maruti Suzuki sells over 160,700 units of Swift in CY 2020

I was in the 11th grade when <keyword id="8555" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata">Tata</keyword> Motors unveiled the <keyword id="28810" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nano">Nano</keyword> at the New Delhi Auto Expo in January 2008. The ensuing PR blitz had me and my friends sold. This compact car was being sold for just ₹100,000 (around $2,500 at exchange rates at the time). It was a passion project of India’s foremost industrialist, Ratan Tata, so there was no way it was going to fail. Annual sales were expected to eventually breach the 500,000 mark. But the Nano was more than just a car. It symbolised India’s approach to frugal innovation, the ability to do more with less, the ability to scale things on the cheap. It symbolised the social mobility promised by the future. Millions of Indian families - the kind that squeezed onto motorbikes for short trips- would now be able to own a car without having to worry about long drawn-out financing plans. It was going to be a gamechanger. And now, ten years later, there are barely any Nanos to be seen on Indian roads. The cheap car has proven to be a very costly failure for its manufacturer, sounding the death knell for Tata’s domestic passenger vehicle business. In June 2018, only one unit was produced by Tata Motors, while only three were sold. No units were exported. How could things go so wrong? The first problem was cost escalations and production delays. The Nano ended up being manufactured at a higher cost than expected, owing to the higher input costs and the need for additional features, but Tata Motors had no choice to sell it at the price that they promised. That was, after all, the USP of the car - that it was only ₹100,000. The car’s large-scale rollout also ended up being pushed back by a year to March 2009 due to production delays, which tempered enthusiasm. Production had to be shifted from the company’s Singur plant in West Bengal to Uttarakhand and Gujarat due to farmer protests over land acquisition. Even with the car’s national launch being delayed, the final product looked like it had been rushed. There were numerous instances of Nano models catching fire in the initial months. The second problem was branding. Tata Motors completely misread the market. <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cars">Cars</keyword> were meant to be aspirational products, not just utilitarian. In a country like India, where status signifiers are ubiquitous, buying the “cheapest car” was a dead giveaway that you couldn’t do better. Calling it as such made it seem like it had the bare minimum of features and was less safe to drive than higher-priced hatchbacks. The “1 lakh car” thus became perceived as the “poor man’s car”.There was definitely a strong level of demand for it, but only a fraction of the people who needed such a cost-effective car were ready to purchase it. The car was relaunched as the ₹199,000 “GenX Nano” in 2015, equipped with automatic transmission and Bluetooth connectivity, but the damage was already done by then. The third problem was the lack of a coherent distribution strategy. The Nano would have been a strong-seller in small towns and rural markets, but Tata Motors lacked a solid dealership network in these far flung areas. As sales declined considerably a year after the car’s launch, reaching a low of 550 units in December 2010, Tata Motors even took to selling the car in hypermarket outlets like Big Bazaar and exporting it to neighbouring countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka. The strategy never paid off. The end of the road As things stand, the Nano could go out of production very soon, as its parent looks to axe ageing models. Tata Motors has maintained that it is yet to take a decision on the matter, but the continued investment, especially to comply with future emissions norms, simply does not justify the returns. A statement from Tata Motors clarified this by explaining that “the Nano in its present form cannot continue beyond 2019”. It has been suggested that the car is still in production only due to Ratan Tata’s emotional connection to it, which is hardly a reason to keep going. Even though the Nano brand could be facing the axe, there has been speculation that it will get a further lease of life through Tata Motors’ deal with Jayem Automotives. Under a proposed partnership, Jayem is set to use the body of the Nano to make a special electric vehicle, which will be branded the Jayem Neo EV. However, a spokesperson for Tata Motors said that this was merely speculation. It looks to be a sad end for the “people’s car”, a product that promised so much. However, its phasing out should give way to smarter product choices from the company as it looks to regain market share at home.

With the petrol-powered small car/hatchbacks buyers affected and others opting for sport utility vehicles (SUV), <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India Ltd will increase its CNG-powered models as well as SUVs, Maruti-Suzuki Chairman R.C. <keyword id="18837" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bhargava" source="Orion">Bhargava</keyword> said on Friday. He also said the small car segment which was at about 70 per cent for the company will go down to about 65 per cent which is also a substantial size. Speaking to reporters, he noted that there has been a degrowth in the small car hatchback segment while the SUV segment logged major growth. "Next year, there will be degrowth in the hatchback segment. The purchasing power of the hatchback segment has been affected and hence, is not growing. The production capacity will come down from 70 per cent to what the market needs," Bhargava said. Nevertheless, hatchbacks are still a large part of Maruti Suzuki's business. According to him, the decline in the small car market began three years ago and inflation will make it worse affecting this market segment. He said the change in the composition of sales - decline in small cars and increase in SUVs - is due to the various price increases. Maruti Suzuki's market share, which was at 51 per cent in 2019, has gone down to 41 per cent this September. Bhargava did not agree that the company was late in entering the electric vehicle segment -it plans to launch its model in 2025 - even as Tata Motors has launched a mass-market model. "We are localising the components, looking at the infrastructure development in the country. An electric vehicle customer should not face issues," he said. Queried about the inventory build-up of the small cars, <keyword id="169965" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shashank-srivastava" source="Orion">Shashank Srivastava</keyword>, Senior Executive Director, Marketing &amp; Sales said there has been a bit of build-up as there is a mismatch of supply and demand. He did not agree that the increase in compressed natural gas (<keyword id="6356175" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cng" source="Orion">CNG</keyword>) prices will result in higher demand for diesel-powered models. <keyword id="5915" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="srivastava" source="Orion">Srivastava</keyword> said the diesel segment remains at 18 per cent and CNG continues to be a good economical option against petrol and diesel vehicles. He said Maruti Suzuki will launch more CNG-powered models based on the waiting period for the existing ones. On the SUV front, Bhargava said Maruti Suzuki will increase its offerings and newer models will be showcased at the upcoming AutoExpo. Queried about the impact of rupee depreciation against the dollar, he said that the Indian currency depreciation is much less as compared to other currencies. The rupee has strengthened against the yen, which has resulted in imports becoming cheaper for Maruti Suzuki. Bhargava said the company is targeting two million units this year though the major challenge is the supply of semiconductors. As regards the used car segment Srivastava said the used car pool has gone down. Meanwhile, the company logged an operational revenue of Rs 29,930.8 crore and a net profit of Rs 2,061.5 crore for the quarter that ended on September 30, 2022. For the previous year's corresponding period, Maruti Suzuki's total operational revenue stood at Rs 20,538.9 crore and a net profit of Rs 475.3 crore. During the quarter under review, the company had sold 517,395 vehicles -- domestic 454,200 units, exports 63,195 units. A shortage of electronic components impacted production by about 35,000 vehicles in this quarter. The same period of the previous year was marked by an acute shortage of electronic components and consequently, the company could sell a total of 379,541 units comprising 320,133 units in domestic and 59,408 units in export markets. Pending customer orders stood at about 412,000 vehicles at the end of this quarter out of which about 130,000 vehicle pre-bookings are for recently launched models, the company said. Mazda just rolled out the stunning and innovative new Mazda3 right as Ford and GM bails on small cars

With eight of its models featuring in the top selling brands, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maruti+Suzuki+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Maruti Suzuki India</a> (<keyword id="6392170" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSI">MSI</keyword>) strengthened its leadership position in the domestic passenger vehicle market last month. The company is said to be driving towards 50 % market share in the segment. 
 As per the data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), <keyword id="4226936" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marutis-Alto">Maruti's Alto</keyword> retained the best-selling model tag in January with 22,998 units as against 21,462 in January 2016. 
 <keyword id="1452659" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzukis-Dzire">Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire</keyword> was second with 15,087 units compared with 14,042 in January last year. After that <keyword id="139040" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wagon-R">Wagon R</keyword> stood third with 14,930 units solds and MSI's premium hatchback Swift came in at fourth position with 14,545 units in January. With 13,010 units last month, rival <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hyundai&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Hyundai</a>'s hatchback Grand i10 took the fifth slot. <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword>'s premium hatchback Elite i20 was sixth last month with sale of 11,460 units (9,604). MSI's hatchback Celerio settled at seventh with sales of 10,879 units. The eighth rank again went to <keyword id="3086476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-Baleno">Maruti Suzuki Baleno</keyword> with 10,476 units last month. The company's compact SUV Vitara Brezza sold 8,932 units to become ninth while its van <keyword id="6581308" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omni">Omni</keyword> sold 8,723 units to round off the top 10 list. 
 
Hyundai's Creta and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Honda&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Honda</a> Cars India's City failed to make it to the top 10 last month. They had featured in the top 10 passenger vehicles list in the same period last year. 
 
In terms of market share, MSI sold 11,95,347 units of passenger vehicles in April-January this fiscal as against the industry total of 25,08,845, translating into a market share of 47.64 percent.
