The neighbourhood shopkeeper has been hurt more than modern retail chains in <keyword id="6359453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumption">consumption</keyword> slump, and the industry will have to evolve innovative solutions to come out of it, <keyword id="6361485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="marico">Marico</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="126855" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harsh-Mariwala">Harsh Mariwala</keyword> has said. He termed the <keyword id="29405" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="slowdown">slowdown</keyword> in consumption -- a major factor blamed for pulling down GDP growth to a six-year low -- as a "phase". The economic growth slowdown is a "reality" but all should keep a forward-looking approach to come out of it, he told .
 "While modern retail is showing better numbers, it is at the cost of general trade. It is just that one channel is compensating for the other channel. However, an overall low pick-up is a reality which is what FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies have been progressively experiencing," Mariwala said.
 There is a need for the government to unleash both short-term and long-term reforms to reverse the slowdown, he said adding that there is no quick fix or set formula to fight the same.
 Listing out potential measures that can be taken, he pitched for making companies with less than Rs 1 crore revenues pay GST on a quarterly basis rather than monthly, reduction in the GST slab rates, adoption of direct tax code, bringing down land costs, reduction in real interest rate and upskilling incentives for auto workers to work on electric vehicles.
 To push up the consumption demand, Mariwala said the government needs to take steps to increase liquidity in the market and boost sentiments.
 He said businesses need to be innovative and take an opportunistic view of things by making fundamental improvements in their models.
 Companies need to look internally to counter cyclical "problems", he said adding that some companies have thrived in the worst-performing sectors by doing something impactful for the customers.
 "Businesses should not get swayed by the Indian <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> not growing at higher growth rates. They should do something so that they stand out and they are certain to reap the rewards that come with making that effort," he said. Mariwala said inclusion of research and development spends as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) mandate will act as a nudge to companies to look at innovation, and also give rise to public-private partnerships. He also said there is a need for changes in the education system, which depends excessively on rote.
 "With too much emphasis on standardised test results and benchmarking, the education system can stifle children's natural creative ability making it difficult for them to be innovators later in life," he said.
 Offbeat approaches and methodologies that stir curiosity and instil fearlessness among the children is also needed, Mariwala said.
 In India, many sectors like agriculture are ripe for innovation, which requires attention on productivity, processing and supply chains, he said.
 Mariwala said that having benefitted from innovations as an entrepreneur, he has started the non-profit Marico Innovation Foundation.
 "We believe that innovation can spur creation and sustenance of successful and enduring Indian brands. That will enable India to reposition itself as a global economic superpower," he said. AA HRS

He introduced Ascent Foundation seven years ago to promote entrepreneurs and help women entrepreneurs wade through the challenges of businesses, and grow. After all, he nurtured popular brands like Saffola and Revival. However, Mariwala had to rework his cause soon after as there just weren’t enough women entrepreneurs to work with. He turned his not-for-profit venture into a grooming ground for all entrepreneurs-- not just women. "I wanted to impact entrepreneurs in larger numbers. I started this to promote entrepreneurs. But there weren’t many women entrepreneurs,” Mariawala told Business Insider. Today, seven years later, the foundation has 500 entrepreneurs taking part in the peer group discussions but less than 50 of them are women. "Women's take on anything additional to office is very different and they consider it a tradeoff with their time with family" Archanna Das, Head ASCENT Foundation. Ascent is a peer-to-peer network that helps women entrepreneurs troubleshoot their problems through events and workshops. It periodically organises exciting, highly content-driven events like the flagship annual Conclave, Mixers, Workshops, Huddles, etc. They charge an annual fee of ₹10,000 from all the members to attend these events. “SMEs have a learning curve and we offer is a peer learning platform. We are playing a catalytic role,” Mariwala said. Right now, they have people with an annual turnover of up to ₹2,000 crore who are taking part in these peer groups. And only 10% of them are women. Mariwala still wants to help those who need help the most. He understood the issue and roped in Archanna Das (who is brand and communication management professional), and Shivani Divecha (who had curated events at TedxGate) for course correction. The team brought in stricter eligibility criteria and introduced the concept of initiator — a person who would initiate the talk for the first four months. The entrepreneurs — who want to become a member are required to have a turnover of ₹5 crore for product business or ₹1 crore for service business. They get access to the annual Ascent Conclave and other smaller events that happen from time to time. New Delhi, Jan 6 () Top industrialists Anand Mahindra, Harsh Mariwala and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have condemned violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night, saying such acts cannot be tolerated and the perpetrators must be hunted down swiftly.
Speaking up against the violence, Marico Ltd Chairman Harsh Mariwala tweeted, "Coming from the land of non-violence, it's unbecoming of us to witness and encourage these acts of violence. Extremely hurt seeing last evening's news".
Expressing similar views, in a tweet late last evening Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said, "It doesn't matter what your politics are. It doesn't matter what your ideology is. It doesn't matter what your faith is. If you're an Indian, you cannot tolerate armed, lawless goons. Those who invaded JNU tonight must be traced &amp; hunted down swiftly &amp; given no quarter..."
Likewise, reacting to a video of an injured student who claimed she was beaten up, Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw tweeted, "This is unpardonable. Violence cannot be condoned".
Violence broke out at JNU on Sunday night as a group of masked people armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in the police.
RPG Enterprises Chairman drew parallels between India and Australia, saying India is caught in "religious bushfires".
"Hearing me pray for Australia, for its people, for its 500 million animals that have died since the #bushfires, my little one asked why are you not praying for India where there are religious bushfires lit all over the country and students being attacked mercilessly?" Right from <keyword id="2583871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swachch-Bharat-Abhiyaan">Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan</keyword> to <keyword id="2472340" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-India-initiative">Digital India initiative</keyword> and Make in India campaign, Indians hailed the reform that the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> has initiated ever since it came to power. But it seems that business lobby of the country is losing its confidence in the Modi government, which is poised to complete one year later next month. This was revealed in a Times of India report. 
 
According to the news daily, two tweets from Harsh Mariwala, the chairman of Rs 4,600-crore Marico, narrated this story on Tuesday. In the first tweet, Mariwala said that "Sheen is falling of Modi govt in the context of promises, and gradual delivery. Need to move fast, hope interest rates are reduced today." Then, through another tweet he asserted, "Heard from a leading politician that if elections were held today NDA will barely win 200 seats in spite of weak opposition." 
 
It is not just Mariwala who is unhappy with the Modi government, but many other CEOs also come under the group of cheerless leaders. It's said that the conversation in board rooms is changing. According to a TOI report, “Captains of industry are now highlighting two new concerns, albeit in hushed tones - some of the recent notices from the taxmen and the seemingly unchecked Hindutva agenda of certain right wing groups.” 
 
Some of the business leaders are also minutely observing the attacks on churches as well as the fresh spurt of tax notices. They believe this is sending out a wrong signal to investors at a time when the government is striving hard to woo foreign investors, the financial daily stated. Harsh Goenka, RPG Group chairman, told TOI said that tax demands of such high value would invariably result in increased litigations. "As long as the issues are treated objectively and fairly, it should not worry <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword>. However, as a secular nation, we must avoid any form of fundamentalist activity. Random fascist comments lead to communal disharmony and should be dealt with severely," he said. 
 
A majority of CEOs also agreed that much has happened in the last few months and the Modi government is suffering from the burden of over expectations.

India Inc unhappy with Modi Govt’s ‘sluggish reforms’

During his 40-year (and counting) career, Harsh C. Mariwala, who joined YPO in India in 1990, transformed a traditional commodity-driven business into a leading consumer products company. 
 
From a turnover of US$0.08 million in 1971, his company <a href="http://www.maricokaya.com/" target="_blank">Marico/Kaya</a>, specializing in health and wellness products, crossed a turnover of US$833 million during 2013-2014. For FY2015, the company is expected to gross US$1 billion with a market cap of more than US$4 billion. 
 
With his business flourishing, Mariwala decided it was time to give back. His passion for innovation and social responsibility led him to establish the Marico Innovation Foundation to fuel innovation in India and <a href="http://www.ascentfoundation.in/" target="_blank">ASCENT</a>, a mentoring organization to help budding entrepreneurs learn from one another through idea exchange, experience and insight. 
 
 
 
Having gravitated from “doing things to getting things done to influencing others,” Mariwala handed over the day-to-day operations of Marico/Kaya and now focuses his attention on scaling up ASCENT. 
 
He shares five essential practices to support leaders looking to grow their business by changing their strategy but not their vision: 
 
1. Navigating the Vagaries of Family Business: Ensure the stakeholders, especially the owners of your company, are aligned where the business growth plan and how it should be managed during the journey. 
 
2. Attracting High Quality Talent: If you have limited resources and big aspirations, you are forced to think differently, and that’s when innovation happens. Creating an impactful and innovative ad campaign will make you stand out and attract talent. 
 
3. Turning Values Into Culture: Share your values with your teams and ask them to share ideas. If managers own their values, it will create a culture in the organization. A strong culture is impossible to copy. 
 
4. Don’t Take ‘No’ For An Answer: If someone says your idea cannot work, test it again. Innovation is not simply creativity; it is a lot of execution. 
 
5. Copycats: When your idea works, copycats will come along and try to acquire the market share. Instead of becoming redundant, collaborate and innovate again.

MUMBAI: The markets are on a roll, with the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty making fresh life highs, led by gains in banks, auto and energy counters. 
 
The new life high for Sensex is 26,356.24; and that for Nifty is 7,865.85. 
 
The Nifty extended its winning streak for fifth consecutive session and hit an all-time high as FIIs continued to pump in dollars in Indian markets on expectations of pick-up in economy 
 
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, President, Destimoney Securities, is of the view that the market will continue to move upwards. 
 
“A lot of FIIs money is coming out of Russia into Indian markets through BRICS fund. Domestic investors are also entering the market and that is providing support,” said Bandyopadhyay. 
 
At 2:02 p.m.; the 50-share index was at 7,860.95, up 69.25 points or 0.89 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 7,865.85 and a low of 7,779.20 in trade today. 
 The S&amp;P <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> Sensex was at 26,340.82, up 237.59 points or 0.91 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 26,356.24 and a low of 26,075.28 in trade today. 
 
Sandeep Tandon of Quant Broking is of the view that market went through consolidation in the last three months. It is light at the moment and looks set for next leg of upmove. 
 
The CNX Midcap Index rallied 1.27 per cent and the CNX Smallcap Index surged 2.10 per cent. 
 
Among the sectoral indices, the CNX Bank Nifty was up 1.49 per cent, the CNX Auto Index gained 1.02 per cent, the CNX Energy Index rose 1.42 per cent. 
 
The CNX FMCG Index was down 0.75 per cent and the CNX IT Index slipped 0.51 per cent. 
 BPCL (up 5.25 per cent), <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> (up 3.11 per cent), <keyword id="45008" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Power">Tata Power</keyword> (up 3.04 per cent), BHEL (up 2.91 per cent) and Tata Motors (up 2.87 per cent) were among the major Nifty gainers. 
 
ITC (1.92 per cent), Infosys (1.01 per cent), HCL Tech (0.80 per cent), HDFC (0.70 per cent) and TCS (0.68 per cent) were among the index losers. 
 
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1090 gainers against 425 losers. 
 
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 625.18 crore and domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 135.75 crore on Thursday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
