Patanjali has turned into a Rs 5,000-crore company within a decade. Although still small compared with HUL's Rs 30,000 crore plus revenue, it has caught the attention of all fast-moving consumer goods giants. 
 And above all that, Ramdev hasn’t been modest about its success and recently he said Patanjali can beat multinational giants such as <keyword id="45009" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unilever">Unilever</keyword> (HUL's parent), Colgate and <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>. 
 
HUL, the maker of Lux, Dove and Rin, will launch around 20 products - toothpaste and skin cream to soaps and shampoos - under its existing Ayurveda brand Ayush. 
 
Ayush was launched in 2001 as a premium brand but had lost momentum by 2007. Now, the positioning will be mass market - price points between Rs 30 and Rs 130. 
 
HUL has already been in such desi feud earlier. In mid-1980s, Ahmedabad-based Karsanbhai Patel's Nirma, a detergent brand, toppled HUL's Surf from the shelves of middle class and lower middle class Indian homes. The Indian unit of the Anglo-Dutch FMCG Company rolled out Wheel, a low-priced option. 
 
Given Hindustan Unilever's determination to take on Patanjali, and the latter's aggressive future plans, 2017 may see another classic corporate battle in the FMCG space.

Although the company reported 9% year-on-year growth in net profit to ₹2,187 crore as against ₹2,009 crore in the same quarter last year, investors were disappointed on lower than expected volume growth. The company delivered 4% year-on-year volume growth in the July-September quarter lower than estimates of 5-7%. Food segment that includes products like Horlicks, Kissan, Bru, Kwality Wall’s saw a slowdown in revenue growth. Food segment grew only 7% in the September quarter as against 12% in the June quarter. Hindustan Unilever attributed the dull growth in the food segment to reasonably high sales in the previous quarters. <div type="image" title="HUL cchart" height="900" width="1200" msid="87136921" hostid="261"></div> The company has declared a dividend of ₹15 per share in this quarter. Meanwhile, muted consumer sentiment with rising inflation bothered the (fast moving consumer goods) FMCG major. “September quarter witnessed a sequential improvement in trading conditions, albeit remained challenging with unprecedented levels of input cost inflation and subdued consumer sentiments,” added Mehta in a statement to stock exchanges. In an official statement, the FMCG major said, "Over the next few months, Glow &amp; Lovely will be on the shelves, and future innovations will deliver on this new proposition." The Men's range of Fair &amp; Lovely has also been renamed to <keyword id="9504348" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="glow-handsome">Glow &amp; Handsome</keyword>'. The move comes in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement in the US which led to social media calling out beauty brands for perpetrating a bias based on skin colour. Following this, Johnson &amp; Johnson announced that it will be discontinuing its skin lightening creams Neutrogena Fine Fairness and Clear Fairness by Clean &amp; Clear. HUL's Fair & Lovely to now be called 'Glow & Lovely'

New Delhi, Dec 15 () Leading air purifier makers witnessed up to 60 per cent jump in sales in the peak season, mainly October and November, this year, helped by growing pollution levels and steep rise in air quality index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR and northern region.
 Air purifier makers like Philips, Blueair, Panasonic, Eureka, Forbes, Sharp, Xiomi and Blue Star reported high double-digit jump in sales.
 Besides Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), the companies also saw higher demand from tier-II cities like Lucknow and Kanpur. 
 The norther region contributes more than half of the sales of air purifiers.
 While Delhi-NCR continued to top sales chart for air purifiers, this year also saw some of the companies reporting higher number of sales from markets like Kerala and North East.
 "This year, the air purifier market in India stood at Rs 450 crore and we have witnessed a strong surge in air purifier penetration, recording a 60 per cent growth over last year till date," Philips Personal Health, Indian Subcontinent Vice-President Gulbahar Taurani said.
 Sharp sold around 15,000 units in the month of October and November this year.
 "Sharp witnessed 27 per cent growth in sales in these two months," Sharp Business Systems India President Consumer Electronics Kishlay Ray said.
 "This year, we have witnessed sales of our air purifier in strange markets where we never thought pollution is an issue. For example, Kerala and North East (which accounted for nearly 3 per cent of our total sales), apart from well-known pollution hotspots like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and so on," he added.
 Similarly, Eureka Forbes also reported a 30 per cent growth, its Chief Transformation Officer Shashank Sinha said.
 "The air purifier market was dominated by one market predominantly that is Delhi-NCR, followed by certain non-metros which did fairly well during the peak season," Sinha added.
 While the market for room air purifiers is in a nascent stage, limited to some key metro cities a few years ago, it has now started expanding to smaller cities.
 FMCG major Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), which operates in air purifier category with its brands Blueair and Pureit, also saw a double- digit growth.
 "We have seen a healthy double-digit growth during the peak season this year. More than 70 per cent of our sales still come from the north region," a HUL spokesperson said.
 "While the category is nascent in smaller towns, we have seen signs of demand picking up in tier II towns in north India," he added.
 With the rise in air pollution, the companies believe that air purifiers are gradually becoming a lifestyle product and are likely to see sales throughout the year by shedding the tag of being a seasonal product.
 According to Xiaomi India Head - Categories and Online Sales Raghu Reddy, "The response to air purifiers has been overwhelming and positive throughout the year owing to the fact that today it has become a necessity for Indian consumers."
 "We have noticed a trend of awareness and acceptance of the poor air quality and environmental issues than before. Today, people are pro-actively taking precautions and improving the quality of indoor air that they are breathing."
 Panasonic India General Manager, Air Purifier Business Syed Moonis Ali Alvi said, "With the rise in pollution levels, backed by the increasing awareness and growing preferences for health and wellness products, air purifiers have become a part of our lifestyle today."
 According to market experts, the segment is growing at around 15 to 20 per cent annually and more than 15 companies are operating in the space.
 However, Blue Star, which witnessed 25 per cent growth in the segment, cautioned about the quality of products being sold in the market and demanded that its standards should be defined and regulated.
 "Air purifiers are sold from Rs 800 to Rs 57,000 in the market. Someone has even put charcoal and is selling it as room air purifier," Blue Star Managing Director B Thiagarajan said.
 "This should be treated as health care product and should be regulated. There should be some certification," he added.
 According to him, some of the makers are simply importing products without understanding the market.
 "In this chaos which is going on, suddenly one week or 10 days after stubble burning, people are buying it," he said, adding that it is very important to assure the people that the air is being purified.

Its offer to exchange 4.39 of its shares for every one share in GSK’s subsidiary reportedly beat out all-cash <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/tlyjL7ec2HRAyB5r0vjRCK/Nestle-Unilever-Coke-make-bids-in-4-billionplus-GSK-Indi.html">bids</a> from the likes of Nestle, ITC and Coca Cola. The businesses being divested, which include health drinks Horlicks, Maltova and Boost, brought in a total of £406 million (₹36.4 billion) in sales in the nine months ended September 2018. Interestingly, the 140-year old Horlicks will be owned by HUL’s parent company, Unilever, and it will have to pay royalties on sales. The acquisition also includes GSK’s 82% holding in its Bangladesh unit as well as branding rights to products in various other markets. HUL will also distribute GSK’s over-the-counter and oral healthcare products like <keyword id="135142" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="crocin">Crocin</keyword> and Sensodyne for a period of five years as part of a preliminary move into the pharmaceuticals space. In exchange, GSK will get a 5.7% stake in HUL, which is valued at ₹230 billion, and hence, become the second-largest shareholder in the company. Mumbai, May 29 () Extending its rising streak to the third session, equity benchmark Sensex jumped 224 points on Friday, driven by gains in HDFC, ITC and HUL despite weak cues from global markets. After gyrating 656.72 points during the day, the 30-share BSE index rebounded from the day's low to settle 223.51 points or 0.69 per cent higher at 32,424.10. It hit an intra-day high of 32,480.52 and a low of 31,823.80. The NSE Nifty advanced 90.20 points or 0.95 per cent to 9,580.30. During the day, it touched a high of 9,598.85 and a low of 9,376.90. ONGC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, jumping over 5 per cent, followed by Bajaj Auto, ITC, Sun Pharma, Nestle India, L&amp;T, Maruti, UltraTech Cement and HUL. On the other hand, Infosys, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, TCS and Titan were among the laggards. Besides stock-specific action, heavy foreign fund inflows lent buying confidence to domestic investors, analysts said. On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors bought equities worth Rs 2,354.14 crore on Thursday, provisional exchange data showed. Further, markets witnessed volatility as India registered its biggest single-day spike of 7,466 coronavirus cases. The number of COVID-19 cases in India crossed 1.65 lakh and the death toll climbed to 4,706, as per health ministry data. Globally, the number of cases linked to the disease has crossed 58.10 lakh, with the death toll at around 3.60 lakh. Meanwhile, bourses in Hong Kong and Tokyo closed on a negative note, while Shanghai and Seoul finished with gains. Stock exchanges in Europe were trading in the red in early deals. International oil benchmark Brent crude futures slipped 2.33 per cent to USD 35.19 per barrel. New Delhi, Apr 30 () FMCG major Hindustan Unilever CMD Sanjiv Mehta on Thursday said the company has not cut any jobs or salary of employees so far due to the coronavirus pandemic but cannot say what will happen in future.Addressing a media conference call on the company's quarterly earnings, Mehta said Hindustan Unilever (HUL) has already taken various cost saving measures but steps for the road ahead will depend on how the economy behaves after the country emerges from the health crisis."Right now we have not shed any jobs and at this stage we have not done any salary cuts, but I would not be able to say what is going to happen in the future because we will have to see how the situation evolves," he said.Elaborating further, Mehta said, "If for instance the economy bounces back then we are into business but if we get into deep depression then we will revaluate all the steps that we have been taking. We always keep options open because we evaluate everything very closely. We have to evaluate, we have the options that we can exercise in future."He was responding to a query on whether the company has cut jobs or reduced salaries of employees in order to overcome the financial impact of coronavirus outbreak and subsequent nationwide lockdown.Stressing that "the ethos of HUL is very frugal", Mehta said, "We have a very close focus on each of the lines of P&amp;L (profit and loss) and we look very closely to ensure we add value and drive value to the business."Citing some of the steps that the company has undertaken to save cost, he said activities "that don't add any value like travelling, even if you wanted to, there is no expenses incurred there"."Under the current context if it is not going to add value then why should we be spending that money.
