The <keyword id="19949639" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee" source="keywords">rupee</keyword> depreciated 12 paise to 83.56 against the <keyword id="19949640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-dollar" source="keywords">US dollar</keyword> in early trade on Tuesday, weighed down by the strengthening of the American currency in the overseas markets and elevated <keyword id="20024983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil-prices" source="keywords">crude oil prices</keyword>. <keyword id="20024982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex-traders" source="keywords">Forex traders</keyword> said <keyword id="21356063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-importers" source="keywords">oil importers</keyword> and <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-portfolio-investors" source="keywords">foreign portfolio investors</keyword> (FPIs) bought US dollars amid rising US yields, and this dragged down the local unit. At the <keyword id="20520118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interbank-foreign-exchange-market" source="keywords">interbank foreign exchange market</keyword>, the rupee opened at 83.51 and lost further ground to trade at 83.56 against the greenback in initial deals, registering a fall of 12 paise from its previous closing level. On Monday, the rupee depreciated 10 paise to settle at 83.44 against the US dollar. The rupee had dollar inflows and rose to 83.37 on Monday, but was sold-off to 83.44 levels, as oil and FPIs bought dollars looking at rising US yields, said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director <keyword id="21083675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finrex-treasury" source="keywords">Finrex Treasury</keyword> Advisors LLP. On Tuesday, rupee is likely to touch 83.55 before cooling off to 83.45, Bhansali said, adding that the narrow range for the day could be 83.40 to 83.55. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="19976503" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="keywords">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 105.91, higher by 0.02 per cent, following a surge in US treasury yields as investors contemplated a second Trump US presidency. <keyword id="19969325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brent-crude-futures" source="keywords">Brent crude futures</keyword>, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.22 per cent to USD 86.80 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, touched lifetime high levels in early trade. However, the indices pared the initial gains and were trading in the negative territory. The BSE Sensex was down 64.46 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 79,411.73 points. The broader NSE Nifty fell 25.55 points, or 0.11 per cent, to 24,116.40 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Monday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 426.03 crore, according to exchange data.

Here, it was all about super high monetary stakes, lightning-fast trade deals, and bucketloads of money shifting hands every single second. This wilderness lured millions of individuals with the promise of super duper high returns. But, at what cost? Welcome to the unforgiving, ultra-risky wild west of <keyword id="19991165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equity-markets" source="keywords">Indian equity markets</keyword> called the <keyword id="145718" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Futures-and-Options" source="Orion">futures and options</keyword>. Here, everyone seems to just fly right through the bright red-flagged warnings of financial risks to earn even a fraction of these promised returns. Most burn themselves in the process, but carry on nevertheless, as if nothing ever happened. <h2>Chasing the cloudy profits</h2>The data conclusively proves that every 9 out of 10 individuals only lost their hard-earned money in this land. But hey, what do the numbers know? Some hide their losses out of shame, some out of fear. The proponents, meanwhile, proudly boast unusually high returns on their investments, some open social media channels while others encourage their friends and family to take the plunge. Naturally, news of this unstoppable and humongous en-masse migration to the F&amp;O (futures and options) town has reached sheriff <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SEBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SEBI">SEBI</keyword>, galvanising them into action. After all, it was time to put a leash on this madness and save the common man. The inhabitants of this town doubled in the last 2 years, from 51 lakh in FY22 to 96 lakh in FY24—99.8% of whom were small and mid-income traders. But profits? Well, that's a different, rather completely absent story. <h2>Que Sera Sera, much?</h2>A recent report by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) that studied profits and losses made by traders in the equity derivatives segment between FY22-24 exposed the mad mania of futures and options trading in India, especially since the pandemic. Per the report, 91.1% of individual traders, or about 73 lakh traders had only lost money trading in futures and options in FY24. Between FY 22-24, over 1 crore traders, or about 92.8% of individual traders, had lost Rs 2 lakh each. But once bitten, twice shy? Well, not in this case. More than 75% of individuals, who had only made losses trading in F&amp;O in FY22 and FY23, continued to trade vigorously in FY24 as well, without any changes in the bottom line, which remained deep in red and negative. So, then all these traders must be uber-rich, with tons of cash and not much care to spare? Nope. 76% of traders in the F&amp;O space in FY24 had an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh. 2 years ago, their share stood at 71%. And their choice of poison? Options! In FY24, 60% of traders made losses trading in futures, but a whopping 91.5% burnt their funds trading in options. Mind you, futures are riskier than options. With futures, which require significant capital investment, the buyer and seller both are contractually bound to adhere to the pre-determined strike price of the futures or options contract, irrespective of whether the prevailing prices are higher or lower (and thus, resulting in losses for either the buyer or seller). With options, since this adherence ain't necessary, individuals end up taking debt to take highly leveraged positions while trading here. <h2>Scale of the explosion</h2>Anyone who trades even infrequently will tell you that a demat account is the mitochondria or powerhouse of the trading cell. As of August 2024, India had over 17.1 crore <keyword id="20957284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demat-accounts" source="keywords">demat accounts</keyword>, which are a prerequisite for trading in the markets. India is the 9th biggest country in the world, in terms of total demat accounts. Did you know that our demat accounts are at par with the entire population of Bangladesh? Talk about scale! Just 4 years ago, in March 2020, this number was a mere 4 crore. Naturally, the total F&amp;O turnover on both <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSE">NSE</keyword> and BSE has hit the roof, and also broken it. As of October 4, 2024, the total futures and options turnover on NSE stood at a massive Rs 4,78,27,27,750.30 crore. As of September 2024, India's STT mop-up had gone past Rs 26,000 crore. Traders have to pay STT whenever they buy or sell any security in the market. So, more trading brings in more STT, and hence, more revenue for the government, so they're not really complaining. After all, this is certainly what they'd call enviable growth. As of August 2023, our STT collection stood at about Rs 21,599 crores. And in FY20-21, India's STT collection had been Rs 16,000 crore. If only our salaries also managed to grow at this rate! <h2>So, what's happening?</h2>Two things. One, it's the big bulls who are raking in all the moolah. And it's the younger lot (those aged under 30) who are propping them up for this. In FY24, 43% of individual traders in the market were less than 30 years of age. In just one year, this number has swelled by 12 percentage points from just 31% of individual traders. But who says ageing is bad? Wrinkles and silver hair seemingly have a propensity of incurring lesser losses in the market. In FY24, only 79% of traders aged above 60 years made losses, as compared to 93% of those aged below 30. Small and mid-income traders, which make up 98% of the total trader base, witnessed average losses per person of Rs 65,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh in FY24 in futures and options, respectively. The winner here? Clearly, the big bulls, who declared an annual income of over Rs 1 crore, ended up with average profits of Rs 96,000 per person this year. <h2>What’s the sheriff up to?</h2>The government has finally swung into action, hiking the STT rate for F&amp;O during this year’s budget. Effective October 1, 2024, the STT on futures stands at 0.02%, up from 0.0125%. For options, it was upped to 0.1% versus 0.0625% previously. Small margins, but huge impact oncoming. Says Puneet Sharma- CEO and Fund Manager at Whitespace Alpha, “SEBI aims to enhance market stability while safeguarding investor interests, reflecting the regulator's intent to balance risk management with market participation”. But this might come with its own share of challenges, too. “Stricter norms around leverage, transparency, and capital adequacy could limit the ability of investors to determine their own risk appetite, thereby stifling innovation in trading strategies. Over-regulation in an environment that thrives on strategic flexibility and creativity could dampen the market’s dynamism, affecting India's competitiveness in the global derivatives landscape”, he observes. SEBI recently came out with a set of guidelines that aim to thwart <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword>' participation in futures and options and hinder them from taking undue risks. Here's a quick recap of what's to come for the residents of the F&amp;O town Margin Requirements: To battle the high volatility and chaos which is generally seen on expiry days(i.e the last mandated date, post which an option becomes invalid), SEBI will put in place an extreme loss margin (ELM) of 2% for all open short options on the day of expiry. Translation? Traders will need to pony up more cash upfront, leaving them with fewer funds to take on risky bets. It ain't a choice: No more of one expiry every single day! Going ahead, an exchange like BSE or NSE will just be able to offer weekly expiries, that too, only on one benchmark index, as opposed to an entire buffet it currently offers. At present, NSE offers weekly options contracts for its financial index, bank and midcap indices. But say goodbye to this, and hello to derivatives on only 1 index per exchange. Raising the bar: Effective November 30, 2024, the minimum contract value for index derivatives will be upped to Rs 15 lakh, from the present Rs 5-10 lakh. The hope is that by making it ultra-expensive to enter these trades, investors will be dissuaded from taking on risky trades. Pay upfront: Starting February 2025, those trading in options will have to pay the entire options premium upfront, even before their trades are executed. This is because options generally carry very high leverage, and paying a significant sum upfront can force traders to think twice. Invigilation Pro Max: Starting April 1 2025, to make sure that the number of positions for equity index derivatives does not slyly slip over the mandated limit, especially on expiry days when trade volumes are huge, the exchanges will have to take a minimum of 4 position snapshots randomly. The question is, will these injections of sobriety be enough to calm down the steroid-fed bull of the futures and options market in India? Well, only time and market turnover will tell! However, a decline in the dollar index and a marginal fall in the Brent crude index prevented further losses in the domestic unit, according to experts. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 84.38 -- down 9 paise from its previous close -- and then slid further to 84.44, registering a decline of 15 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee pared its intra-day losses to settle flat at 84.29 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="24182640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-banking-liquidity" source="keywords">Indian banking liquidity</keyword> fell into deficit as industry players paid Rs 1.6-1.8 lakh crore as GST payment. This was after two months that liquidity has fallen into a deficit as the RBI also intervened into forex markets to defend the rupee weighing on liquidity conditions," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "The rupee may be in the broad range of 84.00 to 84.50 in the near term as markets await a slew of data from the US this evening," Bhansali added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.15 per cent to 106.84. On Tuesday, the rupee appreciated 6 paise to close at 83.31 against the US dollar. "As the rupee seems to have started aligning with its fundamentals, in the short term, one can expect the Rupee to approach levels of 83.00 to 83.10, while the medium-term target is projected to range between 82.80 to 82.50 levels," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Mumbai: The rupee slipped 1 paisa to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday, as persistent <keyword id="20520117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-fund-outflows" source="keywords">foreign fund outflows</keyword> and a muted trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit. Forex traders said the USDINR pair has shown significant volatility in recent sessions, with the rupee inching closer to its all-time low of 84.40. This downward pressure is largely driven by global factors, particularly the Dollar Index's strengthening. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.40 against the greenback, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee fell 1 paisa to a new lifetime low of 84.39 against the US dollar. "It appears that the rupee has established support around the current levels, with depreciation limited near 84.50," CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. Pabari further added that the RBI stands tall as the depreciation in the rupee seems to be limited as the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) continues to sell the dollars to protect the sharp depreciation. "For the 5th consecutive week, India's forex reserves declined, possibly due to RBI selling the dollars. Currently, the forex reserves of India stand at USD 682 billion down from the recent all-time high of USD 704 billion," he said. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.04 per cent at 105.98. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.25 per cent to USD 72.07 per barrel in futures trade. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex was trading 210.66 points, or 0.27 per cent lower, to 78,464.52 points. The Nifty fell 100.45 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 23,783.00 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Tuesday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,024.31 crore, according to exchange data. On the macroeconomic front, retail inflation breached the Reserve Bank's upper tolerance level, soaring to a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October mainly on account of rising food prices. Inflation based on the consumer price index (CPI) was 5.49 per cent in September and 4.87 per cent in the year-ago month. India's industrial production expanded by 3.1 per cent in September after recording a contraction in the preceding month, as all three major segments -- mining, manufacturing, and power generation -- showed improvement. However, the growth in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) during the month was lower than 6.4 per cent registered in September 2023.

I knew I wanted to travel and saw this as a way to sustain myself. Now, at 35, I've lived in 12 countries and visited over 30. I've continued teaching, started content writing, and am now working on communications and facilitation for an eco-community in Thailand, my current home. Over the years, I've enjoyed a slew of flings and a few longer relationships. I've also learned dating lessons, including the following three. <h2 id="272d84c3-b35c-4cfc-9d80-089a1f4d2ff6">1. Avoid premature attachment </h2>We met at a Buddhism course in Nepal. He had long curly hair, and I had a lot of free time. I chased him for two weeks until he gave in, fell madly in love with me, and welcomed me into his apartment. We then went about passionately ignoring one of Buddhism's core tenets: non-attachment. Attachment, the Buddha said, was the root of suffering. Testing his theory, we became fiercely attached to a future we quickly planned out — one replete with copious amounts of curly-haired children. Within months, our quest to do the opposite of what the Buddha had taught brought us face-to-face with another core tenet of Buddhism: impermanence. After we argued our way through nine countries and eventually broke up, we ended the relationship with a hand-in-hand walk around the Buddhist stupa in the heart of the neighborhood where we first met. It realized that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-3-different-attachment-styles-2018-6">premature attachment</a> to a vision that doesn't yet have a strong foundation doesn't work. This happened 11 years ago, but it's a lesson I've had to learn a few more times since. <div type="image" title="Woman sitting with camel on Mount Sinai" height="1066" width="1600" msid="113208976" hostid="261" sizebytes="158772"></div><h2 id="4f799bb6-33d2-4899-a580-c1c9c1ca62b3">2. Find friendships in failed relationships </h2>And then there was Moishe. Ah, Moishe, like a breath of fresh air when you fear not being able to breathe anymore. In this case, partly due to a new respiratory virus that was spreading — it was 2020, and the pandemic had just been announced. We met on Nomad Soulmates, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mom-celibacy-to-avoid-dating-apps-bumble-campaign-2024-5">dating app</a> for digital nomads under the most surreal of circumstances. All flights were being canceled, and the world was in panic. We seemed to mirror each other perfectly. We were both longtime travelers and secular Jews from the US. Both of us wanted a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dont-regret-not-having-kids-child-free-decision-2024-6">life partner, but not kids</a> — a near impossibility to find within our demographic. Best of all, we were both obsessed with building community by hosting dinners, workshops, and other types of meetups. To bridge those 13 timezones and COVID masks that separated us — I was living in South Korea, and he was in Pennsylvania — we did what any logical couple <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-met-online-20-years-ago-dating-advice-still-relevant-2022-9">dating online</a> for five months would do: we decided that I would fly across the world and we would do the whole "quarantine" thing together. We rented a one-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania Amish Country for three months, where we could hear the clop-clop of horse hooves passing by our house at all hours.It turned out Moishe and I had one more major thing in common: a shared tendency to get ahead of ourselves. You would think we could have avoided putting the cart before the horse in a town where it was constantly on display properly, but we managed it. Just a few days after moving in, it became clear that we weren't a match romantically. However, we continued to work from the same home and be each other's sole social contact for the next three months. Although my hopes of finding a long-term partner were quickly dashed, this story has a happy ending. We both ended up moving abroad again and now<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-expat-bought-one-way-ticket-to-singapore-2024-8"> share a social network</a>. For me, the lesson here — aside from the obvious one about not making forever plans before you actually meet — is that there's a richness to be gained from having the flexibility to transform a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-long-distance-relationship-online-success-married-switzerland-2024-7">failed relationship</a> into a top-notch friendship. <div type="image" title="Woman sitting in tree on the island of Grenada" height="900" width="1200" msid="113208975" hostid="261" sizebytes="218490"></div><h2 id="4587183a-b63d-4e32-82b8-de5b5c91bbfb">3. Go with your gut</h2>I was just getting out of another <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-relationship-failing-therapist-advice-2023-12">failed relationship</a> when I went on my first Tinder date. We met in Florida when I was visiting my dad en route to Mexico for a Central America adventure — a trip that swiftly canceled after the first time I saw him take out the ponytail elastic and let down his hair. His good looks convinced me to stay. Though we had a strong initial connection, there were obvious underlying issues from the get-go. While I've always been fascinated by relationship psychology, he was skeptical. We also didn't share the same long-term goals; for example, he was set on staying in Florida, while I had no intention of returning to the US full time. For a year, we tried to make something work that was doomed to fail. Spoiler alert: It failed. It turns out that if you enter a relationship thinking, "This probably won't work out," then you're probably right. But I have no regrets. The experience taught me to prioritize the potential for a healthy relationship in the future over the impulse to settle for a less-than-ideal one in the present. Nowadays, I let go more gracefully early on when I see that a connection is unlikely in the long run. My biggest takeaway from these nomadic love affairs has been that it just doesn't bode well for a relationship — or for your heart — to get ahead of yourself by taking big steps and making big plans early on. When you're dating on the road, the temptation to do so is strong, and connecting at a speed that would seem crazy in the "real world" is commonplace. Connections often feel more intense, too, because we <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/digital-nomad-lifestyle-lessons-drawbacks-challenges-2023-8">digital nomads</a> exist within a bubble of transience and time limits. There's a feeling of urgency that pushes us to connect faster.It may be fun at the moment to move in with a guy from the internet, make lifelong plans with the curly-haired Buddha, or spontaneously cancel your onward travels, but if you don't live inside a romantic comedy movie, these are not ways to build an actual stable relationship. BI covered the cost of my trip.</li></ul>As a city dweller, there's one thing that's difficult for me to do: rest.But on a three-day trip to Lazarus Island, a small island five miles from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-traveling-to-singapore">Singapore</a>, I was forced to slow down. I spent one night in a glamping tent on the beach.Launched in February, Into the Woods is an accommodation that promotes slow living. My stay in the tent was 380 Singapore dollars, or $290.Ray Lee and Sam Wong, the cofounders of Into the Woods and a married couple, said they wanted to create a space for people to relax without worrying about following an itinerary and filling their days with activities.The founders had enjoyed camping with their kids while living abroad in the US and Australia. Despite having no hospitality or real estate background, they were eager to start something similar in Singapore.During the pandemic, they chanced upon a government initiative to promote sustainable tourism on Lazarus Island. Lee and Wong ended up winning a three-year tender to open Into the Woods on Lazarus Island in March 2023. The couple estimates that they've invested almost $800,000 in the project — half of which was from their personal savings."We want guests to go home with the feeling of, 'It feels like I didn't do anything, but I feel like I achieved everything,'" Wong told me.Can it be fulfilling to do nothing? I was about to find out.<h2 id="b2ba86e1-f99b-408a-ac31-c20d6805cc35">I stayed at Into the Woods on a Sunday night in August</h2>Upon reaching Lazarus, a staff member picked me up from the pier in a buggy. We drove past a resort that consists of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stay-tiny-home-remote-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-8">tiny houses</a> — the only other accommodation on the island, and where I spent the following night — past the island's sole convenience store and reached the glamping tents on Lazarus Beach a few minutes later.There are nine tents, including six that can sleep two guests and three that can sleep up to four. But apart from trying stand-up paddling on the island's only water sports center, there was little to do. So, this is slow living, I thought.I sat on the beach and took in the surroundings. It was almost 5 p.m., and the beach was full of life. Teenagers blasted pop music on their portable speakers, young kids built sand castles, and dogs ran free on the sand.At around 6 p.m., the last ferry left the island, and apart from the sound of the waves crashing softly into the sand, the beach turned quiet. At that moment, it felt surreal; <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-singapore-best-activities">Singapore</a> has one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-urban-planner-regrets-liu-thai-ker-architect-bicycle-squatter-2024-7">highest population densities</a> in the world. It was strangely comforting to have such an expansive space to myself — well, and the 10 other guests on the beach.With nowhere to eat on the island, guests can cook their own meals or pack food. I pre-ordered a barbecue meat set for around $52 from the island's convenience store. It came with enough for two to three people and included a spread of meat skewers and sausages, along with mac and cheese and otah, a grilled fishcake dish.It was a rare opportunity to cook my own food by the beach, so I took the time to savor each bite and take in the surroundings.As guests are encouraged to wash their own dishes, I put the dirty cutlery and pans aside to haul to the communal kitchen sink the next morning.<div type="image" title="Barbequeing meat on the beach" height="2973" width="4404" msid="113440199" hostid="261" sizebytes="367692"></div>With no TV and a spotty internet connection, I was left to my own devices to figure out how to spend the rest of my evening. Thankfully, each room has a doodle book and reflection journal, and I was grateful for the opportunity to engage in some self-reflection.That night, instead of the latest Netflix series droning in the background, the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore lulled me into a deep sleep.<h2 id="ebda3fa0-75c9-4be3-a00b-4f0245360d22">The next morning, the beach was still empty</h2>I spotted a couple who brought their Maltipoo and a Toy Poodle for a hassle-free getaway."Even though we have WiFi here, I don't feel like working or checking emails," Peiling Kong, a financial consultant in her 30s, said."It's a perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life," she added.Kong is not alone in her desire to get away. Interest in luxury glamping experiences has grown after the pandemic, Mike Harlow, the general manager of the luxury travel agency Scott Dunn, told me after I returned from the trip."Being in highly stressed environments, usually at work, we're definitely seeing people want to experience more expansive landscapes, be more in nature, and get away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist destinations," he said.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glamping-singapore-review-pasir-ris-east-coast-sentosa-price-photos-2022-7">Glamping has gained popularity in Singapore</a> over the past few years, with several companies offering services to set up tents on beaches and public parks. Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which manages zoos in Singapore, even offers zoo-goers the opportunity to try glamping in the wild by a lake in Singapore Zoo or by a penguin enclosure in its bird park — for around $1,300 per tent.In the US, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hottest-hotel-rooms-right-now-are-tents-rvs-glamping-2024-4">hotel chains </a>have also been getting in on the action. Earlier this year, Hilton announced a partnership with AutoCamp, that allows members to use Hilton Honors points to book luxury campgrounds. Similarly, World of Hyatt members can spend points at certain Mr and Mrs Smith's properties — which include several glamping resorts around the world.<h2 id="ccbee4d2-60c6-4300-bf71-b2b3ed9b63fa">The toilet hike lacked luxury</h2>Although the comfy beds and air-conditioned space offered an upscale camping experience, other aspects of the stay didn't feel as luxurious.The tents, for example, did not include an en-suite toilet. Guests have to share a communal toilet a three-minute walk away. It's no hardship, but it is an inconvenience — especially at the resort's price point."It reminds me of my army days," a guest in his 50s jokingly told me.<div type="image" title="Communual toilets at Lazarus Island" height="2313" width="3977" msid="113440200" hostid="261" sizebytes="625940"></div>When I returned from my trip, the cofounders told me they could not build en-suite toilets due to cost and time constraints. The US presidential election is right around the corner, inflation concerns remain elevated, geopolitical tensions are high, and the US national debt is reaching untenable levels.Investors and central banks alike have been snatching up gold. The asset's price hit another record high earlier this week at $2,739.40 per ounce after rising over 30% this year, and some analysts are setting a price target of $3,000.Investing in gold is slightly different from putting money into stocks or bonds. Below, two gold experts share four ways investors can add gold to their portfolios.<h2 id="f6498d65-9f43-415b-a374-53643e6db3e3">4 ways to invest in gold</h2>For starters, investors can purchase the metal directly.You can buy gold coins online. You can buy gold bars at Costco. Those strip mall stores with a big "We Buy Gold" sign? You can buy gold there, too.Buying the physical commodity is a tangible way to invest in gold, but it does have some drawbacks. Jeff Muhlenkamp, portfolio manager at Muhlenkamp &amp; Company, points out that there are transaction costs when buying directly from a gold dealer. The investor also has to ensure the gold is certified regarding purity and weight. Buyers must also consider secure storage solutions and insurance for their physical assets.In general, physical gold is a less liquid way to own the asset and is quite costly. "Most of the time when people go and buy gold coins, they'll pay a big premium upfront, and they'll probably suffer a discount when they come to sell at the end," George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors, said.Investors can avoid the complications of investing in bars and coins by buying a gold ETF instead.Physical gold ETFs can be bought through a brokerage account and are directly backed by gold bullion held in bank vaults, meaning that investors don't have to worry about storage or liquidity issues. Examples include the iShares Gold Trust fund (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/ishares-gold-trust-us4642852044?miRedirects=1">IAU</a>) and the SPDR Gold Shares fund (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/spdr-gold-shares-us78463v1070?miRedirects=1">GLD</a>).Synthetic gold ETFs don't hold physical gold, investing instead in gold derivatives such as futures and options. These ETFs can be cheaper than physically backed ones since they don't need to store the metal, but they have counterparty risk, or the risk of loss from a contract participant not fulfilling their obligation. Examples include the SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/spdr-gold-minishares-us98149e3036?miRedirects=1">GLDM</a>) and the ProShares Ultra Gold fund (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/proshares-ultra-gold-us74347w6012?miRedirects=2">UGL</a>).For investors who want to get as close to the real thing without buying bars, physical gold ETFs tend to track changes in the price of gold more accurately than synthetic ones, Muhlenkamp said.Mining companies are another option for more indirect exposure. These can vary wildly in risk, so Milling-Stanley advises that investors approach these stocks with discretion. The multi-billion-dollar market-cap mining companies offer the most liquidity and stable business models. Smaller mining companies, known as junior miners, are in the exploration phase of looking for mineral deposits and might not be generating revenues, Muhlenkamp said.Mining stocks are less directly correlated with the price of gold than ETFs and may lag trends in gold prices by several months, Muhlenkamp said.In Milling-Stanley's opinion, investing in mining stocks instead of directly investing in gold erodes some of the metal's portfolio protection, as mining stocks behave more in line with the general equity market.This area of investment is definitely higher in risk, but if enthusiasm for gold continues to surge, more speculative mining stocks will enjoy the biggest upside, according to Muhlenkamp.Examples of mining stocks include Agnico-Eagle Mines (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aem-stock">AEM</a>) and Newmont Mining Corp (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nem-stock">NEM</a>).Gold royalty and streaming companies are yet another way to add gold to a portfolio. These companies finance gold mines and receive a percentage of the gold produced.Royalties limit the holder's exposure to the risks associated with directly investing in mines, such as exploration, development, and regulatory compliance. Royalty and streaming companies are a good way to gain exposure to junior mines but still retain liquidity, especially for investors who don't have the ability or resources to conduct due diligence, Muhlenkamp said.Examples of gold royalty companies include Franco-Nevada (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fnv-stock">FNV</a>) and Wheaton Precious Metals (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wpm-stock">WPM</a>).

It has a giant subscriber base and a towering lead over its rivals (most of which are still struggling to figure out a profitable streaming model), and its stock price recently hit an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-stock-historic-high-chart-streaming-2024-9">all-time high</a>. Still, that gargantuan comeback — it hit $725 a share earlier this month after falling below $180 in summer 2022 following a rare subscriber loss — has some investors asking if the company is worth its high price tag. After all, Netflix still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-not-netflix-is-big-threat-to-hollywood-analysis-2024-2">trails YouTube in terms of TV watch time</a>, and its share of the total TV viewing, per Nielsen, hasn't materially changed over the past year. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-beating-netflix-upfront-battle-for-tv-sports-dollars-2024-7">Amazon threw a wrench into Netflix's advertising ambitions</a> by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-preview-shake-up-tv-ad-marketplace-2024-1">steamrolling into the market</a> earlier this year. Netflix has already made clear to investors that weaker subscriber growth may be ahead as its password-sharing crackdown benefits taper off, writing in its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://s22.q4cdn.com/959853165/files/doc_financials/2024/q2/FINAL-Q2-24-Shareholder-Letter.pdf">Q2 shareholder letter</a>: "We expect paid net additions to be lower than Q3'23, which had the first full quarter impact from paid sharing." While some analysts think Netflix could grow revenue by as much as 15% in 2025, others are more tepid. Barclays even gave the stock a rare downgrade on October 7, writing that it would be harder for Netflix to grow revenue over time and that every growth lever comes with trade-offs. Ahead of Netflix's Q3 earnings report on October 17, here are the top questions on Wall Street's mind about how Netflix can keep its growth going and live up to its sky-high valuation. <h2>Where will future revenue come from?</h2>For all of Netflix's expansion overseas, the US and Canada remain by far its biggest growth engine, accounting for 70% of revenue growth from 2019 to 2023, Barclays analysts wrote this month. How much growth is left? The benefits of Netflix's password-sharing crackdown will fade over time, which could weigh down subscriber growth. Netflix is also counting on the US and Canada to drive advertising growth, but Barclays argued that this could come with trade-offs in either lower revenue (if more people <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ads-are-coming-to-netflix-heres-everything-you-need-to-know">choose its ad tier</a>) or lower subscriber growth (if Netflix raises prices to compensate for that). <h2>How is advertising going?</h2>With subscriber growth potential limited in the US because Netflix is already quite saturated in the market, Netflix needs to ramp up ad revenue. This is a point that analysts have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-earnings-preview-questions-streaming-wars-enter-new-phase-2024-1">making for a while</a>, and Netflix has made progress, announcing a 150% increase in ad commitments at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-of-this-years-tv-upfronts-retailers-2024-4">this year's TV upfronts</a> (off a small base). It's also opening up advertising sales through tech partnerships, and deals to broadcast live events like the Tyson-Paul fight, two NFL Christmas Day games, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-netflix-pro-wrestling-wwe-deal-makes-sense-2024-1">WWE fights</a> — all things that are catnip to advertisers. Netflix execs have said that they expect advertising to eventually account for at least <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">10% of the company's revenue</a>. But the ad tier base is still relatively small (15 million in the US and Canada, LightShed Partners estimated). It needs a lot more to become a meaningful contributor to revenue, though how much is unclear. While Netflix's ad tier growth is steadily adding inventory, those tech deals will take a couple of years to ramp up. The <keyword id="19899797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wwe" source="keywords">WWE</keyword> partnership won't start until 2025. And as part of its effort to attract advertisers, Netflix is spending to acquire more ad-friendly content like live sports (as well as to build a video gaming library), which could increase its content costs and cut into its margins. Meanwhile, <keyword id="19904608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon" source="keywords">Amazon</keyword> came on strong when it rolled out ads by default across Prime Video this year, putting downward pressure on Netflix's and other streamers' ad rates. Barclays wrote that forcing people to watch more ads could also have a downside for Netflix: "It's tough to see how this doesn't come with its own engagement trade-offs." <h2>Are price increases coming?</h2>One way Netflix can keep growing revenue if subscriber and advertiser growth are limited is to raise prices for consumers. There's broad consensus among Wall Street analysts that Netflix has room to do so, given its relative value in the market and price increases by its peers. <keyword id="19941660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="citibank" source="keywords">Citibank</keyword> analysts think Netflix could raise US prices by 12%. But a US price increase would only do so much for Netflix, given its ability to raise prices overseas is limited, Citibank wrote. Netflix last raised prices in October 2023, on its premium and basic tiers, but not its ad-supported or standard plans. Netflix has the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-wins-streaming-wars-this-chart-shows-why-2024-1">lowest cancellation rate</a>, per research from the data firm Antenna, and the lowest-priced ad tier of the streamers, so it has a lot of credit with subscribers on this front. So, the question is more when prices will go up — not if. Or, as <keyword id="23618376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="newstreet" source="keywords">NewStreet</keyword> analysts wrote, is it possible Netflix could go in the opposite direction, at least in some markets? The streamer could decrease prices in small markets to build penetration or launch a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-could-add-free-streaming-service-fast-build-ads-business-2023-1">free, fully ad-supported tier</a> in select markets. <h2>What's happening with games?</h2>Netflix has been building out a video game library since 2021 but has shared little data on its progress.
