<strong>Food is for all; sharing kicks off the party.</strong><br /> Most of us laugh when crash dieters complain of starving – because they always have easy access to food and the denial is their own creation. Yet, the recently passed National Food Security Act in India reminds us of a stark reality. Take care of <keyword id="6398001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-waste">food waste</keyword> on any occasion or any party day – so that no one has to go <keyword id="6354608" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="hungry">hungry</keyword> anywhere in the world.<br />
 <br /> According to a <keyword id="18639" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FAO">FAO</keyword> report, one-third of all the food we produce goes waste, costing the world <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> about $750 billion, while 870 million people go hungry every day. In Asia and south Asia, around 125 kg of food is wasted per person and the wastage amounts to 15 kg per head at the consumer’s end, says <keyword id="1982103" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kehinnde-Taiwo">Kehinnde Taiwo</keyword>, a <keyword id="277148" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-scientist">food scientist</keyword> from Nigeria. “Food ends up in rubbish dumps for a variety of reasons. People buy food on impulse, purchase items which are near expiry dates, cook more than what they can eat or buy food that never gets eaten,” he explains. So the next time you have more food on the table than you can eat, store it for the next meal or better still, share it with someone who is hungry. That’s the time when the party begins.<br />

<strong>Loaded with gifts? Re-gift more, others may have greater needs.</strong><br /> Don’t be a <keyword id="1986802" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Christmas-hoarder">Christmas hoarder</keyword>. You may have received loads of gifts, but do you need all of them? Chances are you already have them or you really don’t have much use for them. In such a case, it is always best to talk to the person who has brought in the gift and find a way to re-gift it to someone who really needs it. A friend once received a number of stylish travel bags (they were the rage of that season) and decided to give them all to a kids’ home nearby who found it handy and useful. She also sent out personalised <keyword id="1986804" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Thank-you-notes">thank-you notes</keyword> to people who had sent her the gifts, telling them how great those were and how the kids loved them. Most of them were happy to hear it and the spirit of giving and goodwill thrived.<br />

Take note of that as energy is a precious gift, needed to sustain Life on earth. There are plenty of ways to save on energy (and your electricity bill, which means more savings and more doings this Christmas). Use power-savers as much as possible – stunning <keyword id="71300" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="LED-lights">LED lights</keyword> instead of conventional lamps speak volumes about your taste and awareness.  <br /> The other material we tend to use most is paper – right from <keyword id="636065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Greeting-cards">greeting cards</keyword> to <keyword id="1986816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paper-boxes">paper boxes</keyword> to <keyword id="1592216" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wrapping-Paper">wrapping paper</keyword>. Last year, an estimated 227,000 miles of wrapping paper was wasted in the UK alone (India data not available yet). But a start-up there seems to have the answer to the problem of paper waste at Christmas time, according to media reports. The UK company says its biodegradable wrapping paper implanted with vegetable seeds (it is called seed paper) is an environmentally responsible alternative that continues to give even when Christmas is over. Well, unless that is available here in India, let us try and use <keyword id="1986817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Recycled-wrapping-paper">recycled wrapping paper</keyword> and re-usable containers/boxes as much as possible. Send <keyword id="1986820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Electronic-greeting-cards">electronic greeting cards</keyword> instead of paper ones and preserve the <keyword id="1986821" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gift-wraps">gift wraps</keyword> for next year’s use, if you can.<br />

<strong>Do a little something extra for someone – <keyword id="1986787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spread-the-cheer">spread the cheer</keyword>.</strong><br /> Make or get a special gift for someone who doesn’t belong to your social or professional circle. In other words, do something special, to make it a special day. Every Christmas, a colleague visits a specialty hospital for the aged and makes a generous donation for those requiring critical care. Asked what induced her to do so, she recalled the time when she badly needed the money to start a specific treatment and a stranger donated it to help her. Giving back what we get from others is not only a social responsibility; it is also one of the core values this season teaches us. As <keyword id="1986786" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mary-Ellen-Chase">Mary Ellen Chase</keyword> so rightly said, “Christmas… is not a date. It is a state of mind.”<br />

Four Ways To Make It A More Meaningful Christmas

It used to be even more common, but a combination of new drugs and insecticides led to a sharp drop in the early 2000s.</p><p>That drop has since stalled out, according to the World Health Organization. The <a href="http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/275867/9789241565653-eng.pdf?ua=1">global malaria rate has not changed much since 2013</a>, in large part because affected areas are not receiving enough funding to fight the disease. Over time, mosquitoes also build up resistance to existing insecticides. </p><p>Many scientists agree that a new approach is needed to eliminate the disease, and a group of researchers at the nonprofit Target Malaria think that genetic modification through "gene drives" is the way to do it. This process would reduce the number of female mosquitoes that transmit malaria.  <span style="background-color: #ffcc00;"></span></p><p>Target Malaria is not the only organization experimenting with genetically modified mosquitoes, but its members believe they will release their technology first. The group has already selected three locations in Africa as testing sites. </p><p>Gene drives, which can change a gene to produce a specific trait that will show in a population for many generations, have sparked controversy in recent months. After much debate, a <a href="https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/932a/3ad3/f13e06c4127119e9eaff62c4/cp-mop-09-l-13-en.pdf">United Nations group ruled</a> in November 2018 that gene drive research may proceed for now, though limitations have been put in place. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We are on the cusp of a new bio-revolution," one UN official, who requested anonymity, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/25/gm-mosquitoes-released-burkina-faso-malaria-gene-drive">told The Guardian</a>. "It is like we were using saws but now we are using scalpels. We can eradicate entire species and we can resurrect them like Jurassic Park. The change is mind-boggling. But it doesn't always work 100%. There can still be unintended consequences."</span></p><p>Delphine Thizy, the stakeholder engagement manager at Target Malaria, told Business Insider that the group won't change its work in light of the UN resolution, as the language reinforces what her team is already doing. </p><p>"It's a good text because it's really balanced between these needs to continue the research and making sure we can answer the questions, the very valid questions on safety and efficacy, and at the same time provide some precaution about making sure the risk assessment is done," Thizy said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>William Urdaneta/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">People queue outside a health center as they wait to get treatment for malaria, in San Felix, Venezuela on November 10, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>How gene drive technology works</h2><p>There are thousands of mosquito species in the world, but very few pose a danger to humans.</p><p>Male mosquitoes don't bite humans; only females infected with a virus or parasite can pass on that infection to people because they drink human blood to gather nutrients that help them produce eggs. </p><p>To reduce the number of female mosquitoes that infect people with malaria, Target Malaria scientists are focusing on a technology called CRISPR, which makes it possible to efficiently edit DNA.</p><p>Usually, only 50% of each generation's offspring inherits DNA that is transmitted from one parent, which means that a trait's frequency in a mosquito population stays the same from generation to generation. Gene drives, however, are inherited by a higher percentage of the offspring, making the modified trait more common as time goes on.</p><p>Target Malaria aims to bring the mosquito population down without killing off an entire species. The nonprofit is only going after <em>Anopheles gambiae</em> mosquitoes - which are responsible for the vast majority of malaria deaths in Africa - while leaving others alone.</p><p>"We are not trying to get them extinct, nor do we think it would be possible," Thizy said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ritesh Shukla/NurPhoto via Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">An Indian vegetable seller sells potatoes during smoke from fumigation being carried out to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in Allahabad, India, on November 1, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Target Malaria wants to test gene drives in three African countries</h2><p>Thizy's team is considering two main approaches: One would skew the sex ratio of mosquitoes to produce a population with at least 90% males. Another would target genes responsible for female reproduction to cause sterility. </p><p>These ideas are still being developed in labs. So far, the group has been successful in reducing the number of mosquitoes in a small cage, Thizy said. </p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-malaria-mosquitoes-wiped-out-in-lab-trials-of-gene-drive-technique-2018-9">Malaria mosquitoes wiped out in lab trials of gene drive technique</a></em></p><p>Eventually, Target Malaria says it will apply a gene drive in three African countries - Mali, Burkina Faso, and Uganda. </p><p>In Uganda, the organization expects to soon open a lab building, Thizy said. The group is also studying wild-type mosquitoes to better understand how they behave.</p><p>Regulators in Mali are reviewing Target Malaria's application for the use of sterile male mosquitoes in a lab. Thizy said these mosquitoes are not a tool for fighting malaria, but introducing them now can help scientists prepare for using gene drives later.</p><p>Target Malaria has also gotten permission to import sterile male mosquitoes to Burkina Faso. About 10,000 male mosquitoes are now waiting for release, and Thizy said she hopes they go out sometime this year. The Gates Foundation has donated about $2 billion in grants to help combat malaria.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Other startups are also developing ways to wipe out mosquito-borne diseases</h2><p>Bill Gates is betting on Target Malaria to succeed, and his foundation <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-gates-backs-gene-technologies-in-fight-to-end-malaria-2018-4">has donated at least $75 million</a> to the group.</p><p>But other companies are also racing to control mosquito populations and eradicate diseases caused by the insect, including dengue fever and West Nile virus.</p><p>Verily, the life sciences unit of Google's parent company, Alphabet, is targeting <em>Aedes aegypti</em><span> mosquitoes, which spread dengue fever and chikungunya in the tropics. Verily is infecting male mosquitoes with the bacterium Wolbachia, which prevents offspring from hatching.</span></p><p>Another Gates-backed company, Oxitec, is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-melinda-gates-malaria-killing-mosquito-2018-6">developing a male mosquito</a> that can kill off future generations of malaria-transmitting females.</p><p>The UK-based company's newest plan builds on its previous trials, which lowered the populations of mosquitoes that carry dengue, Zika, and other diseases. Oxitec's mosquitoes have been dispatched in Brazil, Panama, and on the Cayman Islands, and have reduced wild populations of mosquitoes <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4489809/">by around 90% in certain spots</a>.</p><p>Still, these techniques aren't perfect. In November 2018, the <a href="https://beyondpesticides.org/dailynewsblog/2018/11/release-of-ge-mosquitoes-canceled-by-cayman-islands-officials/">Cayman Islands suddenly called off</a> future releases of genetically engineered mosquitoes in the area without providing a reason.</p><h2>Some scientists say malaria can be eliminated without genetic modification</h2><p><span>Ify Aniebo, a molecular geneticist who focuses on malaria drug resistance and has lived in Nigeria, <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/africa-doesnt-need-genetically-modified-mosquitoes/">wrote in Scientific American</a> that Africans should have been consulted before the genetically modified mosquitoes were first developed, adding that scientists need to complete more studies on the safety and consequences of this technology.</span></p><p>It remains unclear if the introduction of these mosquitoes could cause new diseases to emerge. Aniebo said genetic modification is not necessary to eradicate malaria, pointing to Sri Lanka, which was <a href="http://www.searo.who.int/entity/malaria/documents/zero_malaria/en/">declared malaria-free</a> in 2016 without the use of such technology.</p><p>Thizy, though, said it is imperative to develop a new tool for malaria control because spending more money on insecticides and other existing methods isn't going to work. </p><p>She said Target Malaria asks village residents for consent before conducting any tests. There is no evidence to suggest that any species relies on mosquitoes as a primary source of food, she added, though Target Malaria will independently work to confirm that.</p><p>"Should there be one, let's imagine, the question to society and to regulators would be, is this species that might be affected important enough not to try a new tool for a disease that kills half a million people?" Thizy said. Mosquito-borne diseases kill millions of people each year. A team of scientists think genetic manipulation could wipe out the worst of them.

<p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Stuart Price</span></p><p class="caption">United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) peacekeepers from Nigeria on patrol, March 16, 2008.</p>After President Donald Trump announced plans in April to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-us-budget-cuts-to-un-peacekeeping-programs-2017-4">cut more than a billion dollars</a> in funding to global peacekeeping efforts, the United Nations followed suit Wednesday by announcing plans to <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/deal-reached-cuts-un-peacekeeping-diplomat-140629913.html">pull more than $600 million</a> from its peacekeeping budget.<p>UN diplomats said the cuts would amount to roughly 7% of its peacekeeping budget for the upcoming year, AFP <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/deal-reached-cuts-un-peacekeeping-diplomat-140629913.html">reports</a>.</p><p>The cuts come amid pressure from both the US and the EU, which also wanted to see the UN peacekeeping budget reduced to no more than $7.3 billion rather than the $7.87 billion that was spent last year.</p><p>Now, "cuts across the board" will take place in the UN's peacekeeping missions across the globe, a diplomat who wished to remain anonymous told AFP.</p><p>Before the cuts, the US paid 28.5% of the UN's peacekeeping budget, with <span>China, Japan, Germany and France then following the US. In 2017, the UN led peacekeeping missions in countries such as Syria, South Sudan, Haiti and the border between India and Pakistan.</span></p><p>With the UN currently running peacekeeping missions in countries plagued by wars, famines and genocides, such a drastic cut could have disastrous consequences for people who are already battling for their lives, a UN spokesperson <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40035837">told BBC</a>.</p><p><span>"The figures presented would simply make it impossible for the UN to continue all of its essential work advancing peace, development, human rights and humanitarian assistance," UN Secretary General spokesperson Antonio Guterres told BBC.</span></p><p><span></span></p><p class="source"><span>Reinhard Krause/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Chinese soldiers from an engineering unit practice at an army camp in Qinyang in Henan province on September 15, 2007.</p><p><span>The UN is scheduled to vote later this week on whether to cut the number of peacekeepers in the Darfur region by nearly half.</span></p><p><span>Now that both the US and the UN have sought to decrease their peacekeeping budgets, the cuts could leave thousands of struggling people with even worse access to food, clean water, shelter, and medication, Jeremy Konyndyk, a former head of disaster response for the Obama administration, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2017/may/31/trumps-aid-budget-is-breathtakingly-cruel-cuts-like-these-will-kill-people">wrote in The Guardian</a> in May. </span><span>He then went on to argue that while the role of peacekeepers is a controversial one, cutting programs entirely puts people in even greater danger.</span></p><p><span>"This budget will harm tens of millions of lives to save fractions of pennies," wrote Konyndyk, adding that cuts to peacekeeping programs could also lead to greater costs to de-escalate conflict in the coming years . 'Gratuitously cruel': United Nations guts more than $600 million in funding to global peacekeeping programs

That's how European Central Bank president Mario Draghi will handle downside risks to growth and inflation. The bank left its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/european-central-bank-meeting-january-2016-2016-1?r=UK&amp;IR=T">deposit rate unchanged</a> at -0.3%, as expected. Draghi's suggestion at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/european-central-banks-january-press-conference-2016-1">today's press conference</a> that there may be another rate cut coming as soon as the March sent the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/euro-dollar-trading-after-ecb-january-21-2016-1">euro tumbling</a> against the dollar by the biggest amount in at least two weeks. The chairman of Saudi Arabia's state oil company, Khalid al-Falih, said in Davos that it is "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-on-crude-oil-prices-2016-1">inevitable</a>" that oil prices will start recovering this year, and oil at $30 per barrel is "irrational", according to an FT report. Meanwhile, he reiterated that the country will not cut back production, which could be one way of guaranteeing a relief in oil prices. Bloomberg reported that fellow OPEC member Venezuela has already requested an emergency meeting to discuss production levels, and Nigeria is also itching for a roundtable.</li><li>And thanks in part to crude oil, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ruble-hits-new-low-2016-1">Russia's ruble fell to a record low</a> for a second straight day. The currency dropped nearly 5% to about 84.4 per dollar. It's been the worst-performing emerging-market currency of late. In a note, Capital Economics suggested that this could mean a cut in interest rates within a month or so. </li><li>We got some US economic data. They all missed. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/initial-jobless-claims-january-21-2016-1">Initial jobless claims</a> jumped by 10,000 to 293,000 last week, the highest level since last July, and more than the consensus of economists was expecting. Pantheon Macroeconomics' Ian Shepherdson noted to clients that the spike related to mass layoffs from temporary holiday jobs. And he thinks we could have this seasonal glitch for some time.
