New Delhi, In a fillip to 'Make in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>' initiative, India saw mobile phones exports worth $5.5 billion (over Rs 45,000 crore) in the April-August period in the ongoing fiscal year (FY24), government and industry data showed on Wednesday. <br /><br />As per the estimates by the Department of Commerce and the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>), accessed by IANS, the April-August period saw mobile phone exports worth $5.5 billion, against $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) in the same period in FY22-23.<br /><br />According to industry sources, <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> led the India-made phone exports in the April-August period, surpassing more than 50 per cent of the total estimated figure for the first time, followed by <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword>.<br /><br />In the June quarter, Apple shipped nearly 50 per cent of the country's total 12 million smartphone shipments, as compared to Samsung's 45 per cent export, sources told IANS.<br /><br />This is the first time Apple has surpassed its South Korean counterpart Samsung in smartphone export volumes from the country, as it saw robust iPhone 15 series sales and demand which was over 100 per cent (or 2 times) as compared to last year. India is set to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year, with Apple leading the market with more than 50 per cent in FY24.<br /><br />Driven by domestic manufacturing, Apple iPhones are also set to garner 7 per cent market share in the Android-dominated smartphone market this year, according to latest data. Apple iPhone shipments grew 68 per cent (year-on-year) in the first half of this year in the country.<br /><br />In the first half, Apple secured a 6 per cent market share in the Indian smartphone market and dominated the super-premium smartphone segment (priced between Rs 50,000-Rs 100,000) with a robust 63 per cent market share, according to market research firm CyberMedia Research (CMR).<br /><br />For the first time, Apple sold India-made iPhone 15 and 15 Plus on the first day of its global sales, with exporting those units to a few other markets as well. Mobile phone exports from India cross Rs 45,000 cr in April-Aug period, Apple leads

Survival drama "<keyword id="18932982" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="2018-Everyone-is-a-Hero" source="Orion">2018-Everyone is a Hero</keyword>", based on the Kerala floods that year, is <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s official entry to the Academy Awards 2024, the Film Federation of India announced here on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference, Girish Kasaravalli, noted filmmaker and chairperson of the selection committee, said the 16-member jury unanimously selected the Malayalam film to represent the country. <br /><br />Kasaravalli, a renowned voice in Kannada cinema, said they had a lengthy discussion before choosing "<keyword id="6355580" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="2018" source="Orion">2018</keyword>" to represent India at the 2024 Academy Awards. <br /><br />"It was a pan-Indian selection. And we were happy that we were 16 members and we watched 22 films in one week's time. It was a difficult decision because there were so many good films and we had to analyse to find out which film had better merit. Finally, we decided on '2018 - Everyone is a Hero'," the filmmaker said. <br /><br />According to Kasaravalli, the Jude Anthany Joseph-directed film highlights "Indian ethos, situation and people". <br /><br />"It's a film that talks about a calamity that Kerala faced in 2018. It not only represents India but also the calamity that's happening around the world. The film also excels cinematically and technically," he said. <br /><br />"Such messages are linked to climate change and the so called development," he added. <br /><br />Lead star <keyword id="1721478" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tovino-thomas" source="Orion">Tovino Thomas</keyword>, who is currently in Amsterdam for the Septimius Awards where he won the best Asian Actor trophy for "2018", said it was time for celebration for the team. <br /><br />"I was very happy last night and woke up even happier to this exciting news as our film '2018' has been selected as India's official entry (to <keyword id="6376611" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="oscars" source="Orion">Oscars</keyword>). We worked in extreme conditions but it's all paying off. This movie is now getting international acclaim. It's great," Thomas told PTI over phone from Amsterdam. <br /><br />"I'm not with the team to celebrate this moment. Malayalam survival drama '2018:Everyone is a Hero' is India's official entry to Oscars

While the tax overhaul offers corporate tax reductions that could lead to additional capital, the fiscal benefit in the longer term remains to be tested. Tax reform, coupled with the February passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which increased federal spending by roughly $300 billion over the next two years, could spur economic investment while creating inflationary pressure that is expected to cause the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more aggressively. In light of these conditions, companies may want to take the opportunity to revisit their corporate development and capital spending plans.</p><p>When the tax talks were underway last year, I wrote a piece about the potential ramifications for small to medium-sized businesses in which I predicted corporate tax reform would be a boon for U.S. firms, and thus far that has held true, even if the previous 35 percent corporate rate was reduced to 21 percent, and not the 15 percent sought by<br />President Trump. Companies have taken advantage of this 40 percent reduction by hiring staff, enhancing 401(k) matching contributions for employees and purchasing new equipment in the first quarter. How long the spending spree lasts remains to be seen. Last fall, an analysis of the domestic economy seemed to forecast that the potential savings boost from tax reform would outweigh the cost of borrowing, and this remains true in the near term. The Fed has raised rates four times in the past 12 months, bringing the benchmark Fed Funds rate to 1.5<br />percent. An additional seven more rate increases before 2020 could reasonably be expected, which would bring the benchmark rate to 3 percent by Q4 2019 and potentially undermine some of the fiscal benefits of the tax reduction.</p><p>While these figures are still far below the long-term Fed Funds historic average (4.85 percent), they could also come as a shock to businesses used to operating for many years in a near-zero rate environment. With this in mind, businesses may want to take advantage of these low-borrowing costs while they can.</p><p><strong>The Budget Multiplier</strong></p><p>Although tax reform captured more headlines, the budget passed in February also will likely have a major impact on the economy ― both positively and negatively. The $300 billion influx, including more funding for infrastructure and homeland security, is an increase of 8 percent over 2017.</p><p>According to GDP models developed by TD Economics, the independent research arm of TD Bank, prior to the approved budget, GDP growth for 2018 and 2019, were increased by 0.4 and 0.6 percentage points per year, respectively, to account for the additional spending. By comparison, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is only expected to accelerate GDP growth by 0.1 percentage points in 2018 and 0.3 percentage points in 2019, with the sheer size of the budget and historically larger fiscal multipliers for government spending accounting for the<br />difference.</p><p>Specifically, the infrastructure industry is expected to benefit most from government spending. Corporations from a variety of fields ― and especially construction ― are paying close attention to developments. Industrial companies are hoping for a surge in demand and companies across the spectrum are looking at locating headquarters, warehouses and retail in strategic areas to take advantage of investments in roads, bridges and other<br />transportation infrastructure. Companies that produce and transport raw materials could also see a boon with the government's additional spending.</p><p>On the downside, the new budget could significantly compound the consequences of lower corporate tax rates. The double dose of debt-financed fiscal stimulus (i.e. tax cuts and spending increases) will lead to further issues for both the national economy and for corporations, as a high proportion of federal tax revenue is already being allocated to<br />interest payments, making it unlikely the government's growing deficit will be sustainable post-2020, according to TD Economics.</p><p><strong>Opportunity Now, Not Guaranteed for the Future</strong></p><p>The federal government's recent policies are certainly intended to spur economic growth, but a few factors are also tempering investments. Public debt multiples are high and company valuations are at an all-time high, pricing out many middle-market businesses from the merger and acquisition market. For those companies that can leverage their debt, however, the cost of credit remains relatively cheap on a historic basis and a currently strong U.S. economy provide a conducive short-term environment for investments. Strategic capital expenditures now can position organizations for success in the future. How a double-dose of fiscal stimulus could affect middle-market companies

And those fires were just in the US, <a href="https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/statistics/v19i2.pdf">according to 2018 data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)</a>. (Fewer than 1% involved fatalities.)</li><li>Some 60% of the fatal vehicle fires FEMA tracked were due to a collision; the remainder were caused by other factors.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p><br />A minor panic has set in about Teslas catching fire, with several recent incidents in the US, China, and Hong Kong.</p><p>Some of the fires are under investigation because the vehicles appear to have combusted for no obvious reason. There is always a small risk of overheating with the types of batteries that Tesla and other vehicles use, but the unexplained fires are worrisome.</p><p>However, it's always worth noting that electric vehicles are considered statistically no more likely to burst into flames than gas-powered cars. And they might be statistically safer; it's difficult to tell now, as their sample sizes are dwarfed by internal-combustion (ICE) cars.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/12848-lithiumionsafetyhybrids_101217-v3-tag.pdf">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sponsored a study</a> on the questions of electric vehicles and fires in 2017, which concluded that "the propensity and severity of fires and explosions from the accidental ignition of flammable electrolytic solvents used in [lithium-ion] battery systems are anticipated to be somewhat comparable to or perhaps slightly less than those for gasoline or diesel vehicular fuels."</p><p>Still, a combination of a very human fear of fire and Tesla's outsized position in the global auto industry has led to a predictable fixation on its runaway thermal occurrences, to borrow the technical term for battery fires.</p><p>Tesla has generally been proactive in dealing with fires. The company shielded its early battery packs for the Model S sedan to protect them from road damage that could lead to combustion, and it <a href="https://www.tesla.com/firstresponders">advises emergency crews</a> to douse battery conflagrations with thousands of gallons of water (foam, a means of fighting gas fires, can be used if water isn't available, but only to keep the blaze at bay). The carmaker also helps responders to deal with the voltages in Tesla vehicles when conducting rescues, and in reaction to recent fires, it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-updates-battery-software-after-a-shanghai-hong-kong-fires-2019-5">updated vehicle software</a>.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-tesla-should-go-into-stealth-mode-for-the-rest-of-2019-2019-5" data-analytics-position="3">It's time for Tesla to go into stealth mode for the rest of 2019</a></em></p><h2>Electric cars could end up being safer than ICE cars</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wikimedia Commons</span></p><p class="caption">Gas-powered cars also catch fire.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Electric vehicles have the potential to be safer than their gas-powered relatives. But as far as lowering fire risk is concerned, we won't have any definitive sense of whether EVs are better until there are many more on the road, or until solid-state batteries replace lithium-ion units.</p><p>The drivetrain of an EV is far simpler than what you'd find in an internal-combustion car: a large lithium-ion battery pack, made up of smaller cells (thousands, in Tesla's case) sends power to one or more electric motors to move the wheels.</p><p>Contrast that with the hundreds of millions petrol vehicles on the road today. The internal-combustion engine requires a tank filled with an extremely volatile, flammable liquid; that liquid is then pumped under great pressure to an engine where, typically, it's mixed with air, sprayed into combustion chambers, ignited, and exploded, over and over and over again.</p><p>The energy from the fuel is transformed from potential power to kinetic power, with the up-down movement of the cylinders mechanically converted from linear motion to rotational motion, routed to the wheels through several shafts and a transmission packed with gears.</p><p>Rube Goldberg would be impressed. It's a testament to the skill of engineers that this entire clattering apparatus doesn't fly apart due to its own violent nature. Oh, wait, internal combustion engines can literally blow themselves to pieces. These days, that's usually in a race car being driven under extreme conditions on a track, but old-timers such as yours truly can remember when motors would throw a rod, blow a head gasket, seize up, or when cars would burn after their gas tanks were compromised.</p><p>They also sometimes combust when they're just sitting around. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/04/business/bmw-recall-fire.html">BMW recalled about a million cars in 2017</a> to address such a risk - which is, in fairness, extremely low in modern automobiles. Gas-vehicle fires are also easier to extinguish, while fires from electric-vehicle batteries can burn for hours or even days, sometimes reigniting after firefighters think the blaze is over (this happened with a Tesla earlier this year in Florida.)</p><h2>The problem with thinking that engineering is magic</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>USC/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Get under the hod and learn something!</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Not grasping that an automobile is a type of well-managed detonation leads to magical thinking and toxic misunderstandings. But if you know even just a little bit about engineering, you understand that an electric vehicle's technology is not that much different from your iPhone or laptop meeting up with a blender. In fact, a Tesla car is basically a large remote-control car, it's just too challenging for a child to operate.</p><p>My father and uncle were both engineers, and my grandfather was an amateur mechanic, so I grew up around the demystification of machines. But I don't think my insights are unique. Anyone can plainly see that the design of an electric vehicle is potentially safer than an internal-combustion car. (That takes nothing away from the engineers who have been working on ICE cars for decades; they've created magnificent levels of safety from a dangerous initial idea.)</p><p>Still, it's worth considering that to get my iPhone battery to spark and burn, I'd have to smash it with something heavy, a lot, and it might not combust (the battery also might malfunction on its own and short-circuit). Whereas all I need to do to ignite gasoline is strike a match.</p><p>Look, I get it. Runaway thermal events, a.k.a. battery fires, are scary - more so because thermal runaway with lithium-ion batteries can happen in seemingly random ways. There have been Tesla accidents that have involved fires and tragic loss of life.</p><p>Adding to the concern is that electric cars are a new thing. And new things provoke anxiety. The danger of internal-combustion engines is something we've lived with for over 100 years. We've seen Indy 500 race cars explode in flames; we've witnessed countless cars blow up in movies; and many of us witnessed a burning vehicle on the road. Experience is our guide, and experience can be far more powerful, with justification, than reason.</p><h2>We should pay more attention to gas-vehicle fires - but there are way too many of them</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0BXZ0ZPSNXU&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=2048&amp;RH=1036">REUTERS/TIM WIMBORNE</a></span></p><p class="caption">A parking lot full of cars.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Every single automaker on Earth builds and sells vehicles that can and do catch fire. But Tesla gets most of the attention when its vehicles catch fire.</p><p>Yes, this is partly driven by the incidents where Tesla cars have ignited without any apparent reason. But it's also because of the media's tendency to report news on anything and everything, good and bad, about the carmaker.</p><p>CEO Elon Musk points this out all the time. He argues that journalists should cover vehicles that aren't Teslas when they catch fire, under whatever circumstances, because there are so many more gas-powered car fires annually.</p><p>OK, point taken. But that would be quite difficult. Why? Because <a href="https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/statistics/v19i2.pdf">according to 2018 data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)</a>, 171,500 "highway vehicles" of various types caught fire in the US alone between 2014-2016. One in eight fires that fire departments respond to is a vehicle fire, FEMA reported.</p><p>That's 157 vehicle fires <em>per day.</em> You'd need some pretty diligent robot journalists to keep track of that much carnage. (As for EV fires, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-tesla-cars-catch-on-fire-2019-4">counted 20 Tesla fires since 2013</a>, while Chevy dealt with at least one fire in its Volt hybrid-electric vehicle in 2011 by recalling the car. Other automakers have seen a small number of fires since EVs began to hit to road in appreciable numbers since 2010, with Fisker Automotive losing 16 stored vehicles that were flooded by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.)</p><p>I'm not going to entirely let Tesla off the hook here. As the company builds and sells more cars, it's possible that its fire stats will become significant, at which point the design of its batteries might be legitimately questioned.</p><p>But you know who'll do that? Engineers.
