A Redseer report says that e-retailers hit a gross merchandise value or GMV of $1.8 in the first 3 days of their sales. From Flipkart to Amazon to Snapdeal, every Indian e-commerce player is currently hosting their annual sales. The Big Billion Days, Great Indian Festival sale, Snap-Diwali and others provide multiple offers and deals across products to consumers. Redseer report further says that the e-commerce sector will meet 80-100% of the forecasted target of $3.7 billion GMV from their sales alone. “The first three days have been a strong success for e-tailers despite challenging macro environment, indicating that consumer sentiment on online shopping remains bullish. We expect the industry to continue to do well in the remaining days of the sales event and achieve 80-100% of the RedSeer forecasted numbers for the whole 6-day event,” said Anil Kumar, Founder and CEO, RedSeer Consulting. The mobile segment has led the sales, with 55% GMV coming from smartphones. Amazon said that OnePlus, Samsung and Apple crossed ₹750 crore in sales within 36 hours of the sale. The raids or enforcement drives were conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (<keyword id="6367870" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bis" source="Orion">BIS</keyword>) against toy sellers for selling toys without conforming to the quality norms specified by BIS. In addition to this, the <keyword id="2619929" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-consumer-protection-authority" source="Orion">Central Consumer Protection Authority</keyword> (CCPA) has issued notices to three major e-commerce players namely <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> and Snapdeal, for alleged violation of toys quality control order, sources informed. Since January 1, 2021, the government has made it mandatory for toys to conform to the Quality Control Order norms specified by BIS. BIS director general <keyword id="2209490" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pramod-kumar-tiwari" source="Orion">Pramod Kumar Tiwari</keyword> told media persons on Thursday that the raids were conducted as they had been receiving complaints against violations from several quarters against toy sellers and makers. Apart from Hamleys and Archies, raids were conducted between December 28, 2022 and January 12, 2023 on retail stores of WH Smith, Kids Zone and Cococart, which are located at malls and airports across the country. <keyword id="6364858" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tiwari" source="Orion">Tiwari</keyword> further informed that legal action would be intitiated against retailers. Amazon received 344 million hits while Flipkart and Myntra combined got 314 million visits in September. The third highest number of shoppers came to Snapdeal which got 87 million visits in the same month, according to a SimilarWeb report. Amazon and Flipkart individually had over twice the number of visits than that of Snapdeal, Club Factory, Shopclues, Tata Cliq and Paytm Mall combined, showed the data from the report.

 On an interesting note, Snapdeal scripted a comeback story as its numbers grew to current 87 million from 27 million visits in October 2017. “The growing volumes on Snapdeal are built on a sound and granular understanding of the importance of value in Bharat-focused e-commerce. A swanky new space with the Snapdeal signature red colour almost everywhere, 750 employees find their seats in an open office. The founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal ditched cabins cabins to sit right amidst their employees. While this is the saga of every startup today, for Snapdeal, it is the story of resurgence. In 2017, Snapdeal, which was actually one of the early e-commerce players in the country, was caught in the grip of increased competition from Amazon and Flipkart. The company lost a huge chunk of its market share and posted a net loss of ₹46.47 billion in 2016-17. Reports say, Snapdeal was barely left with any money to survive, as they struggled to merge with Flipkart. “The uncertainty was costing Snapdeal money, morale, momentum and more. It was clear to us that we were hurtling towards a full-blown crisis,” Bahl wrote in a LinkedIn blog post. Now, they want a do-over as they launched <keyword id="4831590" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Snapdeal-2-0">Snapdeal 2.0</keyword> in July 2017. “Snapdeal 2.0 is about going back to the energy and drive of a start-up culture. Our new office embodies all that - it is home to a nimble and high-energy team,” said an official spokesperson. About 50 employees have returned to Snapdeal in the last one year, which includes one of its chief architects who had gone on to join a foodtech unicorn as the CTO. The company says that the average tenure of an employee in the company is now over 4 years and even has employees who have celebrated a decade with Snapdeal. “This also means that a large part of the company has seen a big splashy headline phase and have seen the tough period of the company and then stuck together and seen how the company came out of that phase. That kind of collective wisdom and that type of galvanisation of culture money can't buy,” said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Amazon saw 91% of its new customers coming from these towns. Amazon also registered most of its sales in the first 24 hours, from these cities. Snapdeal which has been running its Snap-Diwali sale said that nearly 92% of the orders received so far are from non-metros. It saw a whopping increase in orders from Bharuch (Gujarat), Pali (Rajasthan), Tezpur (Assam), and Paradip (Odisha). “The trends from the Diwali sale are an unequivocal confirmation that e-commerce is now a strong channel for buyers in smaller cities,” said Kunal Bahl, CEO &amp; co-founder, Snapdeal. Local language app aids e-commerce sales Flipkart says 60-70% of its business from Tier 2 and 3 cities. This made the e-commerce giant turn its focus from English to introduce Hindi language on its app. It plans to expand it to other languages soon. “With Hindi content, the selection and range of offers has been updated and tens and millions of new consumers can access the app a preferred language,” Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Officer, told Business Insider earlier. However, contrary to popular belief, these are not people lured by discounts only. “Affordability programmes such as no-cost EMI, exchange, instant bank discounts and more continue to enable record number of customers to upgrade to premium products. With more first-time shoppers from small towns than ever before and tens of thousands of small sellers across India already seeing success, we are excited,” said Manish Tiwary, Vice President - Category Management, Amazon India.

India’s smaller cities are the real dealmakers for all festive e-commerce sales

<ul><li>American online retail firm <keyword id="6357395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eBay">eBay</keyword> has bought a 5.5% stake in <keyword id="4225623" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-Mall">Paytm Mall</keyword>. </li><li>Vijay Shekhar Sharma owned Paytm Mall hopes to turn profitable in the next two years. </li><li>However, this isn’t eBay first bet on Indian e-commerce, its previous two – <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> – failed to work out for the company.</li></ul>American e-commerce giant eBay has <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/ebay-logs-into-paytm-mall-with-5-5-stake-eyes-pie-of-online-retail-1563420493902.html">bought</a> a 5.5% stake in Paytm Mall, Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s new e-commerce vertical. While the details of the transaction remain undisclosed, <a href="https://yourstory.com/2019/07/paytm-mall-funding-ebay-ecommerce-india-vijay-shekhar-sharma">reports</a> say that the American firm is pumping in about $170 million into Paytm Mall at a valuation of $3 billion. Paytm Mall, the e-commerce subsidiary of One97 communications which owns Paytm, aims to turn profitable in the next two years. The company said that it reduced its monthly spends by ₹400 million, is targeting an EBITDA breakeven by 2021-22. EBIDTA is earnings before interest, depreciation, tax and amortization. The company ended the last financial year with a Gross Merchandising Value (GMV) of ₹130 billion and is now aiming for ₹170 billion GMV by 2022. However, what’s interesting is eBay’s India growth trajectory. It had entered the Indian market in 2004, much before e-commerce really took off in the country. However, it has struggled to gain ground. eBay’s first invested in Indian e-commerce was in <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/ebay-takes-61-million-hit-snapdeal-writes-investment-76169">Snapdeal</a> which resulted in a $61 million loss. After the disappointment, eBay moved to the Indian e-commerce success story Flipkart, where eBay sold its India operations to Flipkart in 2017. However, within a year, Flipkart shut down the operations of eBay. When the Indian retail unicorn was acquired by global giant Walmart, eBay sold its stake in Flipkart for $1.1 billion.

The draft e-commerce policy from the Narendra Modi government has given executives from these companies sleepless nights. But in a move that may keep hope alive, the Indian government is trying to ease the function of e-commerce in the country. It has formed formed a standing Group of Secretaries under Ramesh Abhishek, the secretary for Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This committee will ensure inter-ministerial/inter-departmental coordination on resolving issues, cutting across Ministries and departments, regarding e-commerce in India, according to an official release. After the draft e-commerce policy had been announced, Indian industry had voiced their concerns regarding the same. While foreign players not being allowed to take on multi-brand retail, domestic players do not have to comply to such regulations. Indian players like <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> had also mentioned that the policy ignores inventory-based e-commerce players. Founders of Snapdeal, Shopclues were even reported to have come together to set up a lobby for Indian e-commerce which would give the government its inputs on the policy. However, it is not clear whether this panel of bureaucrats will address the exact issues raised by the industry. Meanwhile, Indian e-commerce players have until June 27 to submit their concerns on the draft e-commerce policy. The Indian e-commerce market targeting consumers is estimated to reach $200 billion by 2026, whereas the enterprise e-commerce is expected to hit a whopping $300 billion. As of now, the country’s e-commerce industry is a mere 3% of the global market in size.

<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="1477766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hans-Tung">Hans Tung</keyword>, Managing Partner, <keyword id="685446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GGV-Capital">GGV Capital</keyword>, talks about why Indian <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> shouldn’t focus too much on conquering the Chinese market. </li><li>Tung, has over 14 <keyword id="2023017" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unicorns">unicorns</keyword> in his portfolio, including the likes of <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword>, <keyword id="1815769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="slack">Slack</keyword>, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others.</li><li>Tung invested personally in Flipkart and Snapdeal.</li></ul>When Hans Tung, Managing Partner, GGV Capital, was in India last month, it was not surprising to see the Chinese investor mobbed by Indian entrepreneurs waiting to have a few words with him. And why not? Tung, who was an early investor of <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>, was here looking for his next big investment. “In India, we are looking at opportunities in consumer internet space. Having been a small personal investor in Snapdeal and Flipkart, I have some experience in tracking the rising consumer internet companies. With Unified Payments Interface (UPI), there’s so much growth possible in the consumer internet space here,” Tung told Business Insider. GGV Capital, the fund which started in 2002 manages about $6.2 billion today, with investments in US and China. The fund has now turned to South East Asia, Latin America and of course, India. Tung explained that when the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of a company crosses $4,000 it brings in higher spending capacity. That’s when industries like e-commerce, live streaming and other forms of user generated content; take off. “India is just under $2000, so over the next 10 years it’s going to be very exciting – India is at the cusp of something big,” said Tung. Tung manages 14 unicorns in his portfolio at GGV Capital including Airbnb, Slack, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others. In India, he was an early personal investor in Flipkart and Snapdeal. China bound? Hold on Today, many Indian startups are heading to China. They want to accomplish bigger things in the faster and more developed market. OYO Hotels &amp; Homes, India’s hospitality unicorn, went to China in 2017. And today, the country is its biggest market, bigger than India which is their home turf. “What’s impressive to me is that many Indian companies know what their Chinese counterpart looks like. They have studied the business models in the Chinese internet space,” said Tung. But Tung has a word of caution for these adventurers – speed. “Speed is the biggest thing. When Bytedance came to India, they quickly made progress with their entities – TikTok. They are aggressive. When an Indian company goes to China if you compete in a pure internet space, it’s difficult. OYO has taken an offline hotel business which gives them some advantage. But if you want to go to China, you have to learn to be as fast as a Chinese company is,” said Tung. Tung advises Indian startups to forget China and go after South East Asia instead. “In the SaaS network and service side, I’m not bullish about Indian companies entering China. I encourage these Indian companies to enter South East Asia – it’s an easier market with a lot more advantages,” he said. The Alibaba Lesson Tung was named in the Midas List 2019 by Forbes, which lists venture capitalists with the golden touch for unicorns. But he has also learnt his lessons along the way. They were early investors in Alibaba in 2003, when it was valued at $180 million and they exited when it was worth $33 billion in 2012. Today, the company is worth over half-a-trillion Dollars! “It taught us a lesson. When you see companies that are transformational, the upside is always bigger than you imagine. Ours was a nine-year old investment, everyone was happy with how much it had grown and we thought back then – well how much bigger it can get? No one thought it would be worth half a trillion Dollars,” said Tung. Tung who is on the board of Xiaomi from its early days, and never imagined that it would become one of India’s top brands. “Lot of things have happened over the internet that you wouldn’t have thought was possible,” said Tung.
