<ul><li>Economists at Bank of Baroda in their macro outlook for FY24 see India’s <keyword id="598729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cpi-inflation" source="Orion">CPI inflation</keyword> moderating to 5.5% as opposed to 6.7% in FY23.<br /></li><li>India’s GDP is expected to grow between 6-6.5% in FY24. <br /></li><li><keyword id="6356076" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-economy" source="Orion">Indian economy</keyword> expected to stay resilient; headwinds such as global slowdown and <keyword id="51549" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="el-nino" source="Orion">El Nino</keyword> factored in.<br /></li></ul>After raising <keyword id="6371181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rates" source="Orion">interest rates</keyword> by 250 basis points in the last financial year (FY23), India’s central bank could now cut its lending rate twice in the second half of this year (FY24), say economists at Bank of Baroda. This means that the repo rate, which stands currently at 6.5% will come down to 6%.<br /><br />In a webinar titled ‘Indian Economy FY24 — A Prognosis’, economists at Bank of Baroda said that they do not expect any rate action in the first half of FY24, but believe that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may effect two rate cuts amounting to a 50 basis point cut in the second half of the financial year. <br /><br />“Generally, we expect stance to change before rate action, and now RBI is working on withdrawal of accommodation. I would be looking at the stance changing to neutral before the rate cut,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda on Friday. <br /><br />The prediction comes on the back of the belief that India’s inflation reading will continue to moderate. The economists expect CPI, or the consumer price index, inflation to moderate to 5.5% as opposed to 6.7% seen in FY23. <br /><br />“The upside risks to this are a favourable base and lower energy prices globally. If the El Nino threat persists, it may affect the summer crops,” said Aditi Gupta, an economist at Bank of Baroda. <br /><br /><strong>India’s growth gears <br /></strong><br />BoB economists expect India’s GDP to grow anywhere between 6-6.5% in FY24 which is slightly higher than IMF’s predictions of 5.9%. However, a report by SBI Ecowrap expects the GDP growth at 7.1% – in line with NSSO’s predictions of 7% growth. <br /><br />It is noteworthy that SBI Ecowrap says that India is likely to continue its showdown in pursuing a different pathway of zeroing in on drivers of growth, looking for a renewed surge in resilient manufacturing while supporting the services sector to embrace enhanced efficiency. <br /><br />“Locally, domestic consumption and investment stand to benefit from stronger prospects for agricultural and allied activities, strengthening business and consumer confidence, and strong credit growth while supply responses and cost conditions are poised to improve as inflationary pressure is easing,” SBI said. <br /><br /><strong>The challenges<br /></strong><br />BoB believes that the Indian economy will continue to be resilient, but has also taken into account other factors like expected slowdown in the global economy. <br /><br />“Unlike China, India is primarily a domestic oriented economy but it needs rural demand, job creation and other factors to play out,” said Sabnavis adding that there is uncertainty around the agriculture sector, due to the El Nino phenomenon. <br /><br />In their presentation, BoB economists noted that downside risks to agriculture are – a possible heatwave from El Nino impact, <keyword id="484499" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="unseasonal-rainfall" source="Orion">unseasonal rainfall</keyword>, late departure of the monsoon and spatial distribution of rainfall. <br /><br />India’s bank credit is expected to grow anywhere between 12-14% in FY24, matched by a healthy growth of 11-12% in deposits. They also expect FPI inflows to turn positive after being in the negative zone in FY23. <br /><br />Quantitative tightening in the international markets will also present its set of challenges. While investors will be left with fewer funds to choose from, the risk of recession might make them look for safe haven investments. <p>A vast spot in the Pacific Ocean called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation effects weather the world over. This spot is famous for creating oscillating weather patterns known as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/el-nino">El Niño</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/la-nina">La Niña</a>.</p><p>Here's how these patterns control winter weather in the United States. Following is a transcript of the video. </p><p>Here's how El Niño and La Niña affect weather. They're both phases of a weather phenomenon called the "El Niño-Southern Oscillation" or "ENSO."</p><p>The ENSO originates in the Pacific near the equator. Water in this vast area oscillates between warm and cold. Its effects are felt around the world.</p><p>In the US, its effects are most pronounced in the winter months. When the ENSO's water is warm, it's called an "El Niño." </p><p>This means warmer weather for the Northwest and Northeast, wet weather in the Southwest, cooler temps in the Southeast, and more hurricanes in the eastern Pacific.</p><p>When the ENSO cools down, it's called a "La Niña." This causes warm weather for the Southern US, and more moisture in the Northwest and Northeast. The North Atlantic will also see more hurricanes.</p><p>The ENSO is always fluctuating back and forth but it's not always strong enough to trigger an El Niño or La Niña. An El Niño or La Niña happens every 2 to 7 years on average. How El Nino and La Nina affect weather

Brace  yourself for an  extended summer season and scanty rainfall along with rise in prices of food items this year as the Australian Meteorological Department predicted on Tuesday that the tropical Pacific was in early stages of the El Nino weather phenomenon.<br />
 <br /> The bureau’s current observations state that India's south-west monsoon will be deficient and it has already been predicted by the <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> in April, as per an Economic Times report. <br />

El Nino refers to the warming of Pacific waters and is seen as having a wide-ranging impact on global weather.<br />
 <br /> This comes as bad news for India as the <keyword id="390879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="monsoon-season">monsoon season</keyword>, which runs from June to September in the country, is the main source of water for the agriculture sector. This will affect the <keyword id="2848024" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Agriculture-based-industries">agriculture-based industries</keyword> and the food industry. <br />

In the wake of poor rainfall last year and unseasonal rains and snowfall in recent months, India's revival plans and economic growth will also be hampered.<br />

According to the Australian weather office, the El Nino Southern Oscillation ( ENSO) indicators have shown a steady trend toward El Nino levels since the start of the year. The temperatures of sea surface in the tropical Pacific Ocean have also exceeded El Nino thresholds recently.<br />

Moreover, such changes are also supported by warmer-than-average waters below the surface which will worsen the weather condition.<br />

Trade winds have remained consistently weaker than average since the start of the year. "These indicators suggest the tropical Pacific Ocean and atmosphere have started to couple and reinforce each other, indicating El Nino is likely to persist in the coming months," the Australian weather office said.<br />
 <br />
International climate models surveyed by the bureau indicate that tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures are likely to remain above El Nino thresholds through the coming winter and at least into spring.<br />

El Nino brings bad news for India. Here’s how

<p>The "El Nino" phenomenon, which sparks climate extremes around the globe, is likely to take hold in the Pacific Ocean by the end of the year and could even do so within weeks, the UN said on Thursday.</p>
<p>There was an 80 percent likelihood that El Nino could start between October and November and 60 percent that it would do so between now and end of August, said the UN's weather agency, the World Meteorological Organization.</p>
<p>The El Nino phenomenon -- which can lead to extremes including droughts and heavy rainfall across the globe -- occurs every two to seven years, when the prevailing trade winds that circulate over surface waters in the tropical Pacific start to weaken.</p>
<p>The phenomenon, which last occurred between June 2009 and May 2010, can play havoc for farmers and global agricultural markets.</p>
<p>It leaves countries like India, Indonesia and Australia drier, increasing chances of wildfires and lower crop production, while leading to heavier rainfall in the eastern Pacific and South American nations, raising the spectre of floods and landslides.</p>
<p>"El Nino leads to extreme events and has a pronounced warming effect," said WMO chief Michel Jarraud.</p>
<p>El Nino drags precipitation across the Pacific, leaving countries including India and Indonesia drier.</p>
<p>India's monsoon rains have already arrived five days later than normal, and the prospect of a weak rainy season has raised fears of lower crop production and rising food prices.</p>
<p>In Indonesia, there are concerns that dry conditions could fan wildfires caused by slash-and-burn techniques used to clear land quickly and cheaply.</p>
<p>Fires on Indonesia's western Sumatra island last June already caused the worst haze in Southeast Asia for more than a decade, affecting daily life for millions and sparking a heated diplomatic row with neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.</p>
<p>Australia also tends to be drier during an El Nino, increasing the risk of bush fires.</p>
<p>El Nino-year winters are generally drier in the north of the United States and Europe.</p>
<p>El Nino also causes heavier-than-normal rainfall in the eastern Pacific and South America -- raising the spectre of floods and landslides, as well as shifting nutrient-rich ocean currents that lure fish.</p>
<p>In the past, that has battered local fishing industries and caused diplomatic battles over shifting fishing zones.</p>
<p>The southwest United States and southern Africa, meanwhile, tend to be drier, while east Africa faces heavy rainfall.</p>
<p>- Vulnerable to 'force of nature' -</p>
<p>The name El Nino is believed to have been coined in the 19th century after Peruvian fisherman observed it around Christmas -- the word is Spanish for "boy", in reference to the infant Jesus Christ.</p>
<p>La Nina, the word for "girl", was devised later to label the reverse phenomenon, which is characterized by unusually cool ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, the last of which ended in April 2012.</p>
<p>Both are significant markers of global climate fluctuations.</p>
<p>"Our understanding of El Nino and La Nina has increased dramatically in recent years and this knowledge has enabled us to develop very successful climate services for society," said Jarraud.</p>
<p>"Advance warning has given governments around the world time to make contingency plans for the impact of this year's expected El Nino on the agriculture, water management, health and other climate-sensitive sectors," he said.</p>
<p>"We remain vulnerable to this force of nature but we can protect ourselves by being better prepared," he added.</p>
<p>The two climate patterns are watched carefully by scientists who say that, while they are not caused by climate change, rising ocean temperatures stoked by global warming may affect their intensity and frequency.</p>
<p>"It is too early to assess the precise impact on global temperatures in 2014, but we expect the long-term warming trend to continue as a result of rising greenhouse gas concentrations," noted Jarraud.</p>

Prepare For El Nino

Picture taken September 1, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The effects of El Niño, a series of weather changes characterised by warming Pacific waters near the equator,</span><span> <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/el-nino-winter-forecast-2015-10">can vary widely depending on which part of the world you live in.</a></span></p><p>A strong El Niño, for example, is often associated with flooding and warm weather in Peru, drought in Indonesia, Africa, and Australia, torrential rains in southern California, and a mild winter in the US northeast. </p><p> </p><p><span>Equities analysts at Macquarie, led by Niraj Shah, believe they have worked out what these expected conditions brought on <span>El Niño </span>might do to the global economy in the next few months.</span></p><p>They think it spells bad news for Asian economies while the US will get a net positive effect from the shifting weather patterns.</p><p>Here's what they had to say (emphasis ours):</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Companies in North America and Australia/NZ are most likely to be impacted, followed by companies in Asia. Importantly, the impact on companies is not uniform within any given region. In Aus/NZ, 38% of highlighted companies are likely to be negatively impacted with 62% expected to be positively impacted.<strong> In North America the negative/positive split is 45/55 and in Asia the mix is 70/30.</strong></span></p><p><span>Bizarrely, El <span>Niño spells good news for Australian insurers, despite the warmer, drier weather bringing an increased risk of bushfires. They are the least costly type of disaster to cover for insurers so </span></span><span><span>"<span>compared to a normal year, chances are that loss severity for insurers is lower," according to Macquarie.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>And here's what that weather looks like on the map:</span></span></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Macquarie</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>Wetter conditions in the US will lead to higher corn yields. This is what El Nino will do to the global economy

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you've been paying attention to the weather news at all lately, you'll know that it's a big year for a weather event called El Niño.<p>The complex phenomenon could bring warmer, wetter weather to the northeast this winter and much-needed rain to California, but worsen cold and drought conditions elsewhere in the US.</p><p>And this year's El Niño could be one of the worst on record, experts say.</p><p>"One of the strongest El Niño events in the past 65 years is likely to bring significant winter weather to the United States," James Aman, Senior Meteorologist, Earth Networks, said <a href="http://www.earthnetworks.com/earth-networks-unveils-u-s-winter-weather-outlook/">in a statement</a>.</p><h2>What the heck is El Niño, anyway?</h2><p>El Niño is a weather event characterized by warmer than normal temperatures in the equatorial Pacific ocean, with important consequences for global weather and climate, according to <a href="http://www.elnino.noaa.gov/">NOAA</a>. (By contrast, La Niña refers to <em>colder</em> than normal Pacific temperatures.)</p><p>The effects of El Niño can be seena cross the globe, from&#xa0;increased rainfall in&#xa0;the southern US and Peru to&#xa0;drought in the western Pacific and brush fires in Australia.</p><p>Previously, the 1997-1998 El Niño was considered one of the most powerful in recorded history, triggering devastating droughts, flooding and other severe weather events.&#xa0;<span class="s1">It caused an estimated $35 billion in damage and 23,000 deaths worldwide,</span>&#xa0;<a href="http://www.vox.com/2015/8/17/9164499/el-nino-2015">Vox reported</a>.</p><p>Here's what El Niño looked like in 1997 (left) and now (right):</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>And here's a chart showing how this year's conditions have already surpassed those of 1997:</p><p><div></div></p><p>Already, this year's El Niño has helped put 2015 on track to be the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-nino-will-make-2015-even-hotter-than-2014-2015-1">hottest year on record</a>. And it could have a big effect on winter weather in the US.</p><h2>What El Niño means for winter in the US</h2><p>California could get some drought relief from higher-than-normal rain and mountain snow from the golden state to the southern Rockies. But unusually hot temperatures and lower-than-normal rain or snow in the Pacific Northwest will likely extend the drought there.</p><p>The Northern Plains could see warmer temperatures from Montana to Minnesota.</p><p>The South will likely have colder temperatures and higher precipitation from Texas to Florida along the Gulf Coast, including Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Tampa.</p><p>The Northeast can expect a warmer winter, with more precipitation up and down the Eastern Seaboard. This year's El Nino is shaping up to be one of the worst on record

<p>&#xa0;</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The 2015-16 El Niño has <a href="http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/">likely reached its end</a>. Tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures, trade winds, cloud and pressure patterns have all dropped back to near normal, although clearly the event's impacts around the globe are still being felt.<p>Recent changes in Pacific Ocean temperatures have been comparable to the decline seen at the end of the 1998 El Niño, although temperatures remain warmer than at the end of the most recent El Niño in 2010. Models suggest that ocean cooling will continue, with little chance of a return to El Niño levels in the immediate future.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><p>The 2015-16 El Niño will go down as one of the three strongest El Niño events since 1950. Every El Niño is different, but typically the stronger the event, the greater its global impact. The 2015-16 El Niño was no exception, with wide-ranging effects felt around the world.</p><p>El Niño also added to the globe's warming trend, making <a href="https://theconversation.com/2016-is-likely-to-be-the-worlds-hottest-year-heres-why-59378">2015 the world's hottest calendar year on record</a>. Early indications are that 2016 could be hotter still.</p><p>So as El Niño fades, let's take stock of its impacts worldwide.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><h2>Africa</h2><p>Drought meant that <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/business/news/farmers-owe-banks-r125bn-as-crops-wither-1971244">South African food production</a> was around six million tonnes below normal levels - the lowest since 1995.</p><p>In Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique, maize prices were at least 50% higher than usual, with drought unlikely to break until rains in summer 2016-17. In the <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/event-tracker/not-so-rainy-season-drought-southern-africa-january-2016">driest areas of Zimbabwe</a>, more than 75% of crops were lost. In May 2016, Zimbabwean national parks put wildlife up for sale in a bid to save animals from drought.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/the-times/chocolate-prices-to-rise-as-el-nino-brings-big-dry-to-west-africa/news-story/7b68da82787af93e2557435638699c47">cost of chocolate</a> hit a four-year high as a result of drought and lost production in the world's major cocoa producer, Ivory Coast.</p><p>Drought also affected Ethiopia, Somalia, Swaziland, Zambia and parts of Madagascar, with more than 10 million Ethiopians in need of food aid.</p><p>In December 2015, <a href="http://www.fao.org/3/a-i5282e.pdf">Rift Valley fever</a> was reported in East Africa. The disease is associated with heavy rainfall providing a fertile breeding ground for the mosquitoes that carry the virus.</p><p>In Tanzania, <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/el-nino-induced-floods-ravage-east-africa/a-19245333">heavy rain destroyed crops and food reserves</a>, while in Kenya <a href="http://www.unocha.org/el-nino-southern-africa">heavy rains aggravated cholera outbreaks</a>. In May 2016, landslides in Rwanda cost many lives and heavy rains damaged infrastructure and hundreds of homes.</p><h2>The Pacific region</h2><p>El Niño is often, but not always, associated with <a href="https://theconversation.com/when-the-indian-ocean-and-el-nino-join-forces-things-can-get-hot-and-dry-48969">drought in Australia</a>. But the drying influence of the 2015-16 El Niño was initially tempered somewhat by very warm temperatures in the Indian Ocean. From April to August, above-average rainfall fell over parts of inland Western Australia, New South Wales and eastern Victoria.</p><p>But by spring, the Indian Ocean was helping El Niño, resulting in Australia's third-driest spring on record, limiting growth at the end of the cropping season. A record early heatwave in October further <a href="http://www.farmonline.com.au/news/agriculture/cropping/grains/el-nio-hammers-wheat-crop/2745601.aspx">reduced crop production in the Murray-Darling Basin</a>.</p><p>However, the lack of heavy rains in the north and west meant <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mining-australia-elnino-idUSKCN0S601W20151012">reduced downtime for mining</a>.</p><p>The northern wet season produced a record-low three tropical cyclones in the Australian region. The previous record was five, which happened in 1987-88 and again in 2006-07 - both El Niño years.</p><p>Fewer clouds and less tropical rain contributed to the <a href="https://theconversation.com/au/topics/coral-bleaching">most severe coral bleaching</a> event on record for the Great Barrier Reef.</p><p>The combination of heat and low rainfall brought a very early start to the fire season, with more than 70 fires burning in Victoria and around 55 fires in Tasmania during October. Dry conditions in Tasmania also resulted in hundreds of fires being started by dry lightning in mid-January 2016. The <a href="https://theconversation.com/fires-in-tasmanias-ancient-forests-are-a-warning-for-all-of-us-53806">fires damaged large areas of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area</a>, including areas of rainforest and bogs, which may not have seen fire for centuries.</p><p>In Papua New Guinea, <a href="https://theconversation.com/as-papua-new-guinea-faces-worsening-drought-a-past-disaster-could-save-lives-46390">drought and frost led to crop failures and food shortages</a>. Staple sweet potato crops in the highlands were severely damaged by August frosts - the result of El Niño reducing night-time cloud cover - which also destroyed wild plants that are usually eaten as a backup source of food.</p><p>Vanuatu, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga experienced <a href="http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2015/12/14/el-nino-warning-bells-ringing-oxfam">worsening drought</a>. Islands closer to the Equator such as Kiribati and Tuvalu had intense rain causing flooding, as well as higher sea levels due to warmer waters and weaker trade winds.</p><h2>Asia</h2><p>In the Philippines, drought was declared in 85% of provinces. Indonesia experienced its worst drought in 18 years. <a href="https://theconversation.com/indonesia-fires-threaten-to-send-even-modest-climate-ambitions-up-in-smoke-49155">Forest fires caused poor air quality</a> over vast neighbouring areas including Singapore, Malaysia, southern Thailand and the southern Philippines.</p><p>In the Mekong Basin, delayed monsoon rains reduced rice production, with significant reductions in Vietnam. In Thailand, severe water shortages led to water rationing and delayed rice planting. The Thai government <a href="http://time.com/3960462/thailand-drought/">lowered its forecast for rice exports</a> by two million tonnes. This led to some African countries increasing their imports, fearing a price rise.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-03-28/malaysian-palm-oil-production-to-worsen-on-el-nino-mistry-says">Palm oil prices rose</a> as supplies became limited due to drought in Malaysia and Indonesia. In April 2016, a heatwave set national temperature records for Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.</p><p>Northern parts of China experienced drought in 2015. Heavy rainfall in southern China persisted through the second half of 2015, with flooding and landslides recorded along the Yangtze River Valley. China's December-to-February rainfall was approximately 50% above normal. In May 2016, heavy rain caused <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/1949392/torrential-rains-claim-eight-lives-southern-chinas-guangdong">flooding and landslides in China's Guangdong province</a>.</p><p>In India, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-05-03/india-is-suffering-one-of-its-worst-droughts-in-decades">below-average monsoon rains</a> in June to September led to reduced rice, corn, cotton and sugar output in 2015. Below-average rainfall between October and December also affected India's wheat harvest. Major water shortages emerged in some areas, including Mumbai - the result of two years of failed rains.</p><p>Indian Premier League cricket matches were relocated from Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur due to water restrictions. Record heat affected the north and west of the country in May, setting a <a href="http://reliefweb.int/report/india/india-sets-new-heat-record-temperatures-soar">new national record of 51?</a> in Phalodi.</p><p>Conversely, some <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/12/10/before-and-after-satellite-imagery-of-the-historic-flooding-in-chennai-india/">southern parts of India had exceptionally wet conditions</a>, with record-breaking rains and widespread flooding in Chennai in November and December. The city received over 300mm of rainfall on December 1, 2015; the wettest day in more than a century.</p><h2>South and Central America</h2><p>Peru experienced widespread flooding and mudslides in early 2016, with heavy rain leaving more than 5,000 people homeless. In Ecuador, flooding and landslides damaged properties and affected shrimp production.</p><p>More than 150,000 people were evacuated from <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-35184793">flooded areas in Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina</a> in December 2015. Some experts have linked El Niño flooding to outbreaks of <a href="http://who.int/hac/crises/el-nino/22february2016/en/">mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika virus</a>.</p><p>In January 2016, Argentina experienced its worst locust plague since 1954, following heavy rains and warm temperatures. Heavy rains returned to Argentina and Paraguay in April 2016, causing large agricultural losses.</p><p>In contrast, <a href="http://latincorrespondent.com/2016/02/el-nino-wreaks-havoc-in-colombia/">Colombia experienced drought and forest fires</a>, which caused severe damage to crops and pushed up food prices, leading to malnutrition in some areas. In November 2015, the United Nations warned that 2.3 million people would need food aid in Central America.</p><p>The Caribbean also experienced drought; Cuba had its most severe dry season in 115 years; Barbados, Dominica, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Barbuda and Saint Lucia experienced water shortages, with the latter declaring a national emergency. The Dominican Republic experienced serious agricultural losses.</p><p>Brazil had a particularly high number of forest fires during 2015, exacerbated by ongoing drought conditions in the Amazon region. Drought in Brazil and Colombia (and Indonesia) meant <a href="https://weather.com/science/environment/news/el-nino-weather-damages-coffee-crops">coffee prices soared</a> as dry conditions affected all the major coffee-producing countries.</p><p>In contrast, excess rain in northeast Brazil flooded crops, leading to rises in the sugar price worldwide.</p><h2>North America</h2><p>In California, many hoped that El Niño would bring relief from five years of drought. But despite some regions getting heavy rain more typical of El Niño, leading to mudslides, El Niño failed to end the long-term dry.</p><p>In the southeast and south-central United States, rainfall was above normal. Major flooding occurred along the Mississippi River. El Nino is over - but its impacts are still being felt across the globe

That alone is enough to incite fear in many Los Angeles residents.</p><p>But LA county officials are warning that there will likely another terrifying side effect of the coming torrential downpours: The water could unearth previously buried skeletal remains and floods could send them down the mountains.</p><p>This caution came after<strong> hunters and hikers in the Angeles National Forest found a skull, a spine, a pelvic bone, a femur, and a hand over Halloween weekend</strong>, the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-angeles-national-forest-bones-found-20151103-story.html">Los Angeles Times reports</a>. Just a few weeks prior, a separate skull had been found about 100 miles east in Glendora Ridge, according to <a href="http://laist.com/2015/10/13/human_bones_found_in_angeles_nation.php">LAist</a>.</p><p>Officials aren't sure who these bones belong to, or what the cause of death was, but they estimate that an increase in rain will likely cause more skeletal remains to come washing down the hill.</p><p>This 1,000-mile-square-foot swath of forest, which sprawls just 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and other ranges surrounding Los Angeles have been the site of many gruesome findings in the past. A hiker found <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-body-angeles-national-forest-20150920-story.html">a dead body</a> in a canyon there in September, and dog walkers discovered a man's head, two hands, and two feet in the Hollywood Hills in January 2012.</p><p>The forest has had a long history of being a receptacle for dead bodies, given the ideal set up for criminals.</p><p>"It is close to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which gives access to somebody who needs to get rid of remains," Gerry Biehn, a detective at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/1995-11-26/local/me-7410_1_angeles-national-forest">told the Los Angeles Times</a> in 1995. El Nino's rains may unearth something gruesome in the LA mountains

The <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) might not go for more <keyword id="6752353" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rate-cuts">rate cuts</keyword> this year. An <keyword id="6358584" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="HSBC">HSBC</keyword> report has suggested that weak rainfall, resulting from <keyword id="51549" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="El-Nino">El Nino</keyword>, likely to have a substantial impact on food inflation and could directly impact rural household consumption. <br /><br /> HSBC's <keyword id="234293" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="chief-India-economist">Chief India Economist</keyword> <keyword id="192974" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pranjul-Bhandari">Pranjul Bhandari</keyword> expects no further easing this year and believes any more rate cuts could hinge on structural reforms, including food infrastructure and agricultural policy. <br /><br />

	As per a PTI report, the global financial services major has said that El Nino risks cannot be underestimated, and going by the updates from across the world, El Nino conditions are likely to last longer and intensify in the second half of 2015.
<br /><br /> The HSBC report further said the magnitude of the impact would depend on how the government carries out its "<keyword id="972970" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food-Management">food management</keyword>" processes. <br /><br /> In case fear over <keyword id="6358301" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Monsoon">monsoon</keyword> comes true, the central bank has indicated that the monetary policy would hinge on the government's response to it. <br /><br />

	The RBI has said, "A conservative strategy would be to wait, especially for more certainty, on both the monsoon out turn as well as the effects of government responses if it turns out to be weak." 
<br /><br />

	Meanwhile, the central bank has raised its inflation forecast to 6% by January 2016 - slightly higher than the 5.8% forecast in April. 
<br /><br />

	In the policy review on June 2, the RBI has cut benchmark rate by 0.25% for the third time this year to spur investment and growth, but hinted that there may not be any more reduction in the near term. <br />

Thanks to El Nino! RBI might not go for more rate cuts

(<span>Brazil is the </span><a href="http://www.ecf-coffee.org/about-coffee/coffee-facts" target="_blank">world's largest</a><span> overall coffee producer, while Indonesia is number three.)</span></p><p>In Colombia, the <a href="http://www.ecf-coffee.org/about-coffee/coffee-facts" target="_blank">second-largest producer</a> of arabica beans after Brazil, El Nino-related dryness seems poised to worsen an already intense drought, which could damage the country's output.</p><p>Arabica and robusta beans are the two most common types of coffee beans grown around the world. Arabica beans make up <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2009/06/arabica-vs-robusta-no-contest/19780/" target="_blank">the majority</a> of the world's production and are generally <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2009/06/arabica-vs-robusta-no-contest/19780/" target="_blank">regarded</a> as of higher quality than <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2009/06/arabica-vs-robusta-no-contest/19780/" target="_blank">robusta beans</a>, which are grown at lower altitudes and usually <a href="http://www.ico.org/" target="_blank">sell for much cheaper</a>.</p><h2>The financials</h2><p>Concerns about Brazilian coffee output - which rose by <a href="http://www.as-coa.org/blogs/s%C3%A3o-paulo-2015-blog-fast-facts-brazils-economy">nearly 24%</a> in the first quarter of this year - focus on the coastal state of Espirito Santo, just north of Rio de Janeiro, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11">leads Brazil</a> in robusta-bean production.</p><p><span>The entire country, however, is currently facing a severe drought, and its most populous region is mired in the worst dry spell since data collection began more than </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-30962813">80 years ago</a><span>. </span></p><p>As a result, Benchmark ICE futures for robusta-type coffee reached <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">$1,856 per ton ($1,684 per metric ton) </span>on November 5, likely <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">driven up by worries about supplies diminished by drought related to<span>El Niño</span> weather conditions in Brazil and Indonesia, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11">according to Reuters</a><span>. </span></span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker</span></p><p class="caption">A worker carries packs of arabica coffee beans at Conquista farm in Alfenas in the southern Brazilian city of Minas Gerais, July 7, 2008.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Drought in Espirito Santo has caused robusta output in Brazil <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11" target="_blank">to fall</a> from 13.04 million 132-pound bags during the 2014-2015 season to 10.85 million during the 2015-2016 season, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11" target="_blank">according to Reuters</a>. Forecasts from earlier this year saw the downturn in robusta production leading <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/25/us-brazil-coffee-output-idUSKBN0ML1OV20150325#S8I5j7yYqLScxIhc.97" target="_blank">an overall decline</a> in Brazilian coffee production. </p><p>Irrigation bans are in place in Espirito Santo due to the ongoing drought, and, depending on possible rains in the coming days, may to remain in place until the end of this month.</p><p>"At the moment it does not look likely that the authorities will lift the irrigation bans," in Espiritu Santo, Carlos Mera, an analyst with Rabobank, told Reuters.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Maps coffee-producing countries, includes chart of top consumers and prices.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>Robusta production in Indonesia, the </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11" target="_blank">third-largest producer</a><span> of that type of bean, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11">could drop</a><span> from 6.7 million 132-pound bags in 2015 to 5.8 million to 6 million bags next year, depending on how badly El Niño affects the crops - a decline that could cause a dramatic spike in the cost of robusta beans,Saimi Saleh, the deputy chairman of the Associate of Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industries, explained to Reuters.</span></p><p>Robusta beans make up <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-02/el-nino-seen-curbing-indonesia-s-coffee-harvest-10-after-record" target="_blank">more than 80%</a> of Indonesia's production, and some observers believe the country will be the hardest-hit producer.</p><p> "Out of all the effects that El Nino has on coffee production worldwide, its effects on Indonesia are the most likely," Carlos Mera, a Rabobank analyst, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-02/el-nino-seen-curbing-indonesia-s-coffee-harvest-10-after-record" target="_blank">told</a> Bloomberg in October.</p><p>"If El Nino goes on like this, world prices could be doubled," Saleh <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-el-nino-drought-damage-robusta-output-could-drive-up-prices-2015-11" target="_blank">told</a> Reuters.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/YT Haryono</span></p><p class="caption">Female workers sort coffee beans in Medan, Indonesia's North Sumatra province April 25, 2013.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Other observers cautioned that it isn't yet clear what, if any, effect adverse weather conditions could have on prices.</p><p>"Despite El Nino-related losses in Brazil and Indonesia, we cannot get too bullish on robusta prices," a broker in London told Reuters. "This would change if the drought continues for a few more weeks."</p><p>He also noted it would require a "huge loss" of around 3 million bags to offset additional production from Vietnam. </p><h2>'We farmers are in total despair'</h2><p>Brazilian and Indonesian farmers aren't the only ones facing El Niño-related uncertainty either.</p><p>In Colombia, the world's third-largest producer of coffee, an ongoing drought driven by El Niño <a href="http://www.cafedecolombia.com/bb-fnc-en/index.php/comments/how_el_nino_la_nina_affect_production_of_cafe_de_colombia/">threatens the health</a> of this season's coffee crop, while adverse labor conditions could mean healthy beans get left to spoil.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jose Miguel Gomez</span></p><p class="caption">A Colombian coffee grower picks coffee beans in a farm near the small town of Monserrate, July 18, 2008. Monserrate, with about 2,000 inhabitants, is located 1,700 meters high, amid the mountains of the department of Huila.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In October, coffee futures <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-16/coffee-falls-most-since-may-as-more-colombia-supplies-hit-market">fell the most</a> they had in seven months after Colombian coffee growers, who supply the <a href="http://www.ecf-coffee.org/about-coffee/coffee-facts">second-most</a> arabica beans in the world, announced they would ease restrictions on exports to aid farmers who were dealing with drought conditions.</p><p>Projections announced in October saw Colombian production <a href="http://colombiareports.com/colombia-coffee-producers-face-crisis-due-to-el-nino-water-shortages/">falling 18%</a> in the second half of the year. Water shortages related to the weather phenomenon have prompted some <a href="http://colombiareports.com/colombia-should-declare-state-of-emergency-over-el-nino-inspector-general/">to call for</a> a national state of emergency.</p><p>"It has been nearly six months, and they forecast it will be like this for five months more, Raul Fajardo, a grower in southwestern Nariño state, told <a href="http://colombiareports.com/severe-drought-threatens-colombias-prized-coffee-crops-farmers-say/">Colombia Reports</a>.
