During this process, the company discovered that they can bite into the South Indian market much easily as chips and wafers are a part of the meal, unlike anywhere else in the country.<br /><br />“Our Southern consumers love a delightful crunch and texture on their plate. Their meal is incomplete with the taste and crunch of the popular chilli or pepper papad,” explained Dilen Gandhi, Sr Director, Marketing – Foods category, PepsiCo India. The company launched a new product called Lay’s Wafer Style which mimics the crunchy papad, and turn into a ‘meal must-have’.<br /><br />Pepsi has decided to put more muscle into marketing and innovating in a growth market like India. This is one of the few markets for the global major, with ‘double digit’ growth, Pepsi said in its annual report. The company does not provide nation-wise growth numbers. Overall, the snacks business has been growing at 5% for the cola major, contributed heavily by growth in India and China. <br /><strong><br />Tea-time to meal-time</strong><br /><br />In South India, the market is wider and better. Everywhere else in the country, snacks are a tea-time affair but being an integral part of every meal can increase their volume and also regularize sales. Their latest venture is to supplant a traditional fried and homemade <em>pappadam</em>, and integrate into South Indian meals.<br /><br />“Lay’s Wafer Style will prove to be the perfect companion to their traditional <em>Sambhar rice</em> (lentil stew rice), Rasam Rice (soupy rice), Dal Rice (lentil rice), Curd Rice, Lemon (flavoured) rice, or <em>Palak Pappu</em> Rice (Spinach lentil rice),” said Gandhi. This product has been launched across a range of salt and chilly flavours.<br /><br /><strong>Many states, many flavours<br /></strong><br />The South market is as broad as it is deep. The chips and snacks market is extremely fragmented with local brands at every nook and corner especially in South India. Lays will be adding to a long list of traditional snacks right from <em>murukku </em>to banana chips to tapioca chips amongst others. They will also have to compete with makers who has mastered the needs of the market for years. <br /><br />For this global player, these new products are a step in that direction, competing with the price and taste of a multitude of localized players. Pepsi claims that their products have been received well in this market. They have recently launched Kurkure Masala Munch with gingelly oil which is the most used oil in South India. The American food and beverage company has managed to identify a sweet spot common across the five states of Southern India.<br /><br />This strategy of customizing their products to suit local tastes across this diverse country, is not limited to South alone. They will be taking up more such products deep into the various flavours across India.<br /><br />“Wherever we see an opportunity for a local connect with consumers, we have been and will continue to customise our offerings accordingly,” Gandhi said. With Indian subcontinent that has a multitude of needs, expanding in variety is the need of the hour; which is something Pepsi has learnt in the last 30 years of its operations in India. <br />

Or, at least, that's what financier Leon Black says about his relationship with disgraced pedophile <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-life-biography-net-worth-2019-7">Jeffrey Epstein</a>.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apollo-ceo-leon-black-resign-investigation-158-million-epstein-payments-2021-1">Black's long-standing connection to Epstein</a> — the billionaire has said he consulted with Epstein on estate planning — raised all kinds of questions and press coverage in the wake of Epstein's arrest on federal sex trafficking charges in the summer of 2019 and his death weeks later.</p><p>The biggest question: Why had Black, a sophisticated and successful Wall Street boss, the cofounder of Apollo Global Management who could work with anyone he wanted to, paid Epstein tens of millions of dollars for advice?</p><p>Black, it turns out, has an answer for that, which he related to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://puck.news/leon-black-discusses-jeffrey-epstein/">William Cohan in Puck</a> this week. He never added up how much money he sent Epstein's way  — which he now says was $158 million over several years  — because it was just a rounding error against his huge wealth.</p><p>So that kind of sounds … reasonable?</p><p>On the other hand, some math: Black's net worth is a reported $14.4 billion, while the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/publications/files/scf23.pdf">median net worth of an American family</a> is $192,900.</p><p>So when Black is talking about a $93 million swing in his family's fortunes and shrugging it off, he's describing a change of plus or minus 0.6 percent. For the average American family, that would mean adding or subtracting $1,152 in a single day.</p><p>So maybe the richest people in the world really <em>are</em> quite a bit different from the rest of us.</p>

When we had asked our OB-GYN for a referral for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finding-therapy-when-youre-black-pregnant-and-depressed-2021-3">reproductive psychiatrist</a> early on in the pregnancy, he gave us the number for a physician who prescribed nutritional supplements and a grain-free diet plan with no nightshade vegetables — and no medication. She cost $1,500 per session.</p><p>Reproductive psychiatrists are wealthy, well-educated white women. If you are lucky enough to pay the entrance fee into their exclusive club, you are probably a wealthy, well-educated white woman, too.</p><h2 id="85ff03a2-6c9c-47f9-aa4b-a638ddbe3be5"><strong>I tried to find a reproductive psychiatrist I could afford</strong></h2><p>As mandated, I went to see the reproductive psychiatrist assigned to me by the social worker a few days after I had returned from the hospital. I took the subway to her hushed penthouse office suite on the Upper East Side. It was a January day when the city was all gray and stone, the tall buildings leaning in on me. I'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-city-life-disappointing-photos-2023-3">lived in New York City</a> for nearly 20 years — it belonged to me. But that afternoon, I felt small and lost in the city's cold maze.</p><p>The doctor had the brusque demeanor unique to chic New York women who are used to getting what they want. Even so, she was sympathetic, and I could sense that beneath her all-business exterior, she was a little afraid for me. I repeated my story, now with the addition of my brief institutionalization.</p><p>My daughter's due date was on April 6, 2017 — the day after my birthday. I had 13 weeks to find a way to reverse the course of my insanity and get ready to be a mother. The doctor understood our urgency. She also understood that I would not be able to afford her. That afternoon, she spent most of our 45-minute meeting on the phone with other psychiatrists in her network, fast-talking in a broad, Long Island accent, like she was a day trader and I was a stock to sell. No luck.</p><p>No one would take me for under $500 per session. As our time together came to a close, she did promise to keep trying to find me help. She would put my case on a message board where psychiatrists throughout the city could read about the undiagnosable pregnant woman who was too poor to afford their treatment and bid on me online instead.</p><p>Before I left her office, I told her I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/what-is-insomnia">still wasn't sleeping</a>. It had now been almost a month and a half, and the most I had slept was three hours per night — and that had happened only once.</p><p>"OK." She leaned in closer. "I'm going to prescribe you something that is gonna Knock. You. Out," she said in the manner of someone offering up a line in the bathroom of a Downtown loft party. "You'll be sleeping like a baby in no time."</p><p>I left the appointment with no psychiatrist to treat me, still no real diagnosis, but I did have a new prescription for 50 milligrams of Seroquel. An antipsychotic. And knock me out, it did. The next morning, Patrick had to lightly slap my face several times so I could wake up, get out of bed, and go to work.</p><h2 id="ab4b064e-7ddc-4d26-bf6b-0f18912cc502"><strong>The antidepressants didn't work, and I kept searching for answers</strong></h2><p>I don't believe in God, but I prayed like an earnest schoolgirl for what Dr. Abrams had told me in our therapy session to be true: that in three weeks' time, the medicine would kick in, and I would be feeling back to normal. At the three-week mark, though, I was worse than ever. If the Zoloft wasn't working, then I probably <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/what-is-depression">wasn't depressed</a>. If the Seroquel only seemed to help me sleep, then I probably wasn't psychotic. What was wrong with me?</p><p>I searched for pregnant women who have been treated in psychiatric hospitals (a few), pregnant women who have experienced suicidal ideation (more than a few), and reviews of psych wards (many — there are a number of sites heralding themselves as "A Yelp for Psychiatric Facilities," as well as several actual Yelp reviews of psychiatric facilities). Most reviews begin with the patient's often grotesque mistreatment by ward staff and end with how much more traumatized and unwell they felt when they were released.</p><p>My greatest fear was that I was hurting the baby, through my stress, through the medications I was taking. When you are pregnant, the internet is not your friend, even if you are in the soundest state of mind. My OB/GYN constantly implored me to stop self-diagnosing, saying that if I wanted to find research articles that stated, "Apples cause autism in unborn children," they existed. I couldn't stop though: Each day, I went deeper down the hole, reopening the wound.</p><p>My searches kept landing on a disorder I had never heard of before: depersonalization-<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bo-burnham-inside-derealization-meaning-that-funny-feeling-2021-6">derealization</a> disorder. And I kept finding my truth. The feeling that you're observing yourself from outside your body or you have a sense that things around you aren't real, or both… you may feel like you're living in a dream . . . alienated from or unfamiliar with your surroundings... feeling emotionally disconnected from people you care about, as if you were separated by a glass wall… surroundings appear distorted, blurry, colorless, two-dimensional or artificial… distortions in perception of time… distortions of distance and the size and shape of objects.</p><p>Scrolling down the pages for the treatment plan, my heart pounded with longing, but I was always met with the same death knell: There are no medications specifically approved to treat depersonalization-derealization disorder. Contact your primary care provider.</p><p>Unable to help myself, though, I dug deeper. Peeking through my fingers like a child watching a horror movie, I sifted through articles, Facebook groups, threads on Reddit, books on Amazon.</p><p>The books had titles like "Stranger to Myself" or "Feeling Unreal." On their covers were pictures of crying clowns, black tears dripping down painted-white faces. The Facebook group greeted visitors with a blown-up picture of Edvard Munch's The Scream as its cover photo.</p><p>Images posted at the tops of articles showed young men and women trapped inside hallucinatory fractal designs, like darker versions of a poster you might find on a college dorm room wall.</p><p>I learned that DPDR was a dissociative disorder. The only dissociative disorder I had ever heard of was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dissociative-identity-disorder-signs-amnesia-multiple-voices-disconnect-brain-body-2022-4">dissociative identity disorder</a>, more commonly known as multiple personality disorder. I knew that once you had a dissociative disorder, there was no coming back.</p><p>I compared the sites on dissociative disorders with the pages and pages of peripartum and postpartum mood disorders. The pictures I saw there were of pretty, long-haired women wearing yoga clothes and dejected faces as they cradled plump babies. There were lists of medications, support groups, doctors, promises that things would get better. Please, I thought, please let that be me.</p><p>But the world of dissociative disorders continued to reach out its long, sharp-nailed and crooked finger, beckoning me to come and join them where I really belonged.</p><p>"Please, God, no," I silently begged. The heat wave in Europe is so intense that the weather map of France looks like a screaming heat skull of death

By judging paintings based on their novelty and influence, the mathematical algorithm selected the most creative paintings and sculptures of each era.</p><p>The study, published in <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1506.00711">arxiv</a>, found that more often than not, the computer chose what most art historians would also agree are groundbreaking works, like Edvard Munch's "The Scream" and Pablo Picasso's "The Young Ladies of Avignon."</p><p>Scroll down to see which paintings made the cut, and why.</p>

<p>Norway has been named the <a href="http://www.helpage.org/global-agewatch/" target="_blank">world's best country to grow old</a> by the Global AgeWatch Index in a ranking of 198 nations.</p>
<p>The Scandinavian country of roughly 5 million scored high marks in all four categories that the Index said were "key enablers of older people's well-being." That includes income security, health status, enabling environments, and capability.</p>

<p>Ad agency CP+B gave this "aptitude test" to its art directors to get to know them better, and to test their creative problem-solving skills.</p>
<p>AgencySpy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/is-cpb-making-its-creative-staff-take-a-2013-3">obtained copies of the document</a>, and <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/agencyspy/to-clarify-weve-been-told-evan-frys-test-did-not-result-in-terminations_b45729">initially reported</a> that some of those who failed the test were let go from the agency.</p>
<p>CP+B says that's not true; no one lost their job as a result of the test.</p>
<p>The test isn't like anything you took in college, or any kind of corporate HR form.</p>
<p>It uses thoughtful, fussy typefaces to set its questions — befitting an agency known as one of America's most creative shops.</p>
<p>The questions, though, are subjective and vague. Here's one:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">What is your favorite piece of art?</p>
<p>Another question, however, looks like a reasonable test of whether creative staffers can spot typos. It asks for corrections to a quote by Abraham Lincoln.</p>
<p>But one item asks staff to "tell us your life story" by drawing just six pictures.</p>
<p>Here's CP+B's statement:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">“We are constantly assessing that the right people are working on the right things and this series of questions was one way to do that. No one was terminated or will be terminated due to their answers and that was never the intention of these exercises.”</p>

<p>One of the most intensely studied phenomena associated with auctions is known as "the winner's curse": in many cases the winner of an auction actually pays more for the item he or she has won than its true worth. This is a phenomenon observed not only in auctions of low-priced items whose participants are amateur bidders; large corporations bidding in major tenders are also prey to the winner's curse. In the early 1970s many US oil companies collapsed shortly after they won auctions granting them drilling rights in several places in the United States. These corporations had large staffs of geologists and economists assessing the values of the drilling rights for which they were bidding, but it turned out that they had bid prices that were much higher than the true values of the drilling rights on offer, which eventually bankrupted them.</p>
<p>There are two main causes of the winner's curse, one cognitive and one emotional. Participants in an auction try to assess the value of the item on auction as best as they can. They then submit initial bids that are slightly lower than that assessment. The more competitive the auction environment, the closer bids will be to the assessed value, because the more bidders there are in an auction, the higher the chances that someone else will outbid you.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>If there are a very large number of bidders and they have conducted independent value assessments, it is reasonable to suppose that the average assessment will be quite close to the true value of the auctioned item. If that's the case, then the winner of the auction, who has bid the most money, has made an offer higher than the average bid-meaning that it is probably higher than the true value of the auctioned item. This is the cognitive explanation for the winner's curse. In other words, the participants fail to take into account the fact that if they submit the winning bid, then they are valuing the auctioned item higher than everyone else, which in turn means that they are likely to be overvaluing it.</p>
<p>One way to avoid cognitively falling prey to the winner's curse is to write down the price you are willing to bid on a piece of paper that you then stow away in a drawer for twenty-four hours. After twenty-four hours have passed, take it out again and imagine that one of the auction officials who has already seen all the other bids informs you that you have submitted the highest bid. You should now recalibrate your bid based on this information. In most cases, this will lead you to lower your bid, protecting you from the winner's curse.</p>

<p>But there is also an emotional cause to the winner's curse in many cases. Participants in auctions often find themselves driven to submit high bids by "auction fever"-an uncontrollable desire to win the auction at any price. A few years ago two students of mine asked me to suggest a research project. My advice was to find Web sites in which the same items were offered for sale in two different ways-by auction versus direct sale at a fixed price-and to compare the prices at which the items were eventually sold.</p>
<p>I hypothesized that the auction prices would in many cases be higher than the direct sale prices for the same items, and my hypothesis turned out to be true. The auction participants could have obtained what they had bought by auction at lower prices if they instead had gone to direct sales at the same site, but the competitiveness of the auction environment and the auction fever that accompanies it pushed them to pay much more.</p>

Why Big Spenders Fall Prey To 'The Winner's Curse'

Are we heading for a crash?</p><p>Today, Europe's venture capitalists are worried for a very different reason: Brexit.</p><p>"Everyone is still very nervous," said Nic Brisbourne, managing partner at London-based Forward Partners.</p><p>It is now almost six months since Britain's shock vote to leave the European Union - but it still feels like it's almost the only thing anyone wants to talk about. With the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> government still providing little meaningful detail about its actual plans for Brexit ("Brexit means Brexit!"), the tech industry has been left bemoaning the lack of clarity and second-guessing what it will mean for them.</p><p>"It's just an uncertain world out there," Sonali De Rycker, a partner at venture capital firm Accel Partners said on stage at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in London on Monday. "There's no plan A, there's no plan B, there's no plan C. The startups do not know ... if you want to add 100 engineers in London, you're pausing on that."</p><p>She added: We're in 'deer in headlights mode,' candidly - we do not have a clue what's happening."</p><p>It's little surprise the tech industry is approaching Brexit with trepidation. It overwhelmingly supported remaining part of the European Union prior to the referendum - <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/04/britains-tech-sector-overwhelmingly-opposed-to-brexit">almost 90% of respondents were pro-Remain in one poll</a>. But now it's a reality, there are numerous points of concern, from access to funding to the availability of talent.</p><p>The tech industry is heavily reliant on skilled immigrant labour - making it acutely vulnerable to changes in British border policy. Stricter controls could see startups and growing businesses unable to bring over enough talent from Europe - or even lose the talent they have, risking making Britain a less attractive hub to found and grow companies.</p><p>When London firm Balderton Capital surveyed its portfolio companies about their post-Brexit concerns, the "number one thing that came up was access to talent," partner James Wise said on stage. Right now, the UK is "the number one nation that people look at for tech roles outside of their home country across Europe."</p><p>Funding is another worry point. A disappointing Brexit deal could make dissuade international venture capital firms from investing in British businesses, and make it harder for the VC firms already here to raise new funds. In particular, the European Investment Fund <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-07-01/brexit-and-that-huge-eu-investment-fund-you-ve-never-heard-of">has provided British firms with €2.3 billion (£1.9 billion) between 2011 and 2015</a> - and its future in Britain is in question.</p><p>Nic Brisbourne, a managing partner at seed stage firm Forward Partners, told Business Insider that a key concern of his is what it will mean for LPs - the people and institutions that provide the capital for venture capital firms. If that dries up, the effects could be widely felt.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Stefan Wermuth/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Theresa May won't provide the tech industry with much-desired clarity.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"I think [our] portfolio companies are probably not going to be that heavily impacted, but the more worrying bit definitely is what happens to people who invest in VC funds. If they turn away from the UK and we've got less money in VC funds, less money to invest in startups and everything - that will be bad news."</p><p>Matt Hancock, the government minister for the digital economy, also spoke at TechCrunch Disrupt, in appearance that was heavy on optimism but light on details. He failed to shed more light on the kind of visa program the UK might operate post-Brexit, or the precise nature of the government's position in Article 50 negotiations (something Prime Minister Theresa May is steadfastly refusing to disclose). But he did point to a series of recent investment announcements in the UK after the referendum as signs of industry confidence.</p><p>Google <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-to-open-new-uk-hq-with-3000-jobs-2016-11">recommitted to its plans to build a new British HQ</a> and create 3,000 jobs in November, while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-facebook-to-expand-in-uk-in-latest-vote-of-confidence-after-brexit-2016-11">Facebook has said it would expand its UK presence by 50%</a> in 2017.</p><p>"We're clear that we've got to be open and welcoming to the brightest and the best around the world," Hancock said. "We need to make sure that we're clearly winning that global war for talent."</p><p>Frederic Court, managing partner of Felix Partners, doesn't think we'll see a sudden talent exodus: "Many people here have built lives here." But that doesn't mean there won't be an impact.</p><p>"Many people will stay. The main challenge is people will not <em>come</em>, and that's the point that does not ... get any media coverage." He cited José Neves, the Portuguese-born founder of fashion tech startup Farfetch. Neves might not now leave - but post-Brexit, the next Neves might decide never to move to London in the first place.</p><p>The "elephant in the room," according to French digital minister Axelle Lemaire, is that Brexit is not a purely economic argument. Even if Britain gets everything it asks for in the negotiations, there's a rising tide of xenophobic nationalism, and the harm may have already been done.</p><p>It is "all very well to talk about how do we attract the best talent in London, but will they feel welcomed by the rest of the country?" she asked.</p><p>The government refuses to provide clearer details of its Brexit strategy, arguing that doing so would weaken its hand going into negotiations with Europe. But the tech industry fears that this uncertainty has the potential to be damaging - to everything from funding to hiring.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ethan Miller/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">The wildcard: Donald Trump.</p></div><p></p></div></div>And compounding matters is the extreme uncertainty over what the election of Donald Trump will mean for the European startup ecosystem - and the world at large. Nic Brisbourne sees two very different possibilities. One the one hand, "it increases uncertainty, and that's a bad thing when you're asking people to take risky bets, and venture capital is a risky bet."</p><p>However, "you can make the opposite case, which is America gets more risky, therefore people start looking abroad."</p><p>But what if Trump really does <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/nuclear-officers-dont-trust-donald-trump-nuclear-weapons-2016-10">pose the existential threat to civilisation</a> that his opponents claimed? The investor is stoic. Europe's tech investors desperately want more certainty from Brexit

<li>Markets in Asia were lower in overnight trading. The Japanese Nikkei 225 fell 0.2%, the Hong Kong Hang Seng dropped 1.9%, and the Shanghai Composite closed 1.8% lower. European markets are in the red across the board, with the Italian FTSE MIB leading them lower, currently down 0.9%. In the United States, futures point to a negative open.</li>
<li>Japan machine orders fell 2.1% in September from the previous month, worse than the 1.8% drop predicted by economists. "W<span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">e think that once the brief shock from next April's consumption tax hike ends and the economy is seen to be growing anew, it will remove one of the uncertainties that is discouraging new investment," said Deutsche Bank economist Kentaro Koyama following the release. </span></li>
<li>U.K. jobless claims fell by 41,700 in October, besting the 30,000 drop predicted by economists. The unemployment rate fell to 7.6% in September from 7.7% the month before.</li>
<li>In its <a href="http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/Pages/inflationreport/2013/ir1304.aspx">latest quarterly inflation report</a>, the Bank of England said the 7% unemployment rate threshold for the central bank to consider hiking interest rates is now likely to be met in the third quarter of 2014, sooner than previously expected. The pound is strengthening this morning on the news.</li>
<li>Eurozone industrial production fell 0.5% in September from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis, worse than the 0.3% contraction in output predicted by economists. On a year-over-year basis, however, work-day-adjusted output was up 1.1%, besting the 0.1% consensus estimate.</li>
<li>"Three Studies of Lucian Freud," a 1969 painting by Francis Bacon, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/three-studies-of-lucian-freud-sells-for-1424-million-dollars-2013-11">sold for $142.4 million at a Christies auction</a> - marking the highest price ever paid for artwork at an auction. <span>Edvard Munch's "The Scream" held the previous record - it was reportedly sold to financier Leon Black for $120 million at a Sotheby's auction in May.</span></li>
<li>GM announced Wednesday that it will <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gm-has-moved-its-international-headquarters-out-of-china-2013-11">move its international headquarters to Singapore</a> from Shanghai. <span>"Singapore would offer closer proximity to our key markets," said Lori Arpin, a spokeswoman for GM's international operations.</span></li>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Potbelly made $0.15 per share in its first quarter as a public company, besting the $0.09 EPS expected by analysts. <li>Macy's reports earnings before the opening bell. Analysts predict the department store made $0.39 per share in the third quarter (up from $0.36 a year ag0) on revenues of $6.19 billion (up from $6.08 billion a year ago).</li>
