<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92aMMtDf4lU">YouTube</a></div></div>The <keyword id="125824" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NCAA">NCAA</keyword> has <a href="http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/ncaa/resources/latest+news/2013/july/ncaa+will+not+renew+ea+sports+contract">ended its contract with EA Sports</a>, and the video game NCAA Football 14 will be the last game to use the organization's name and logo.
The NCAA is currently being sued by a group of former players led by <keyword id="1737303" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ed-OBannon">Ed O'Bannon</keyword>. One of the group's primary claims is that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obannon-ncaa-football-2010-tim-tebow-name-2013-5">organization used former players' likenesses</a> in <keyword id="25195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="video-games">video games</keyword> like NCAA Football without compensating them.
Some think the lawsuit could <a href="http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8914700/ed-obannon-vs-ncaa">bankrupt and end the NCAA as we know it</a> if O'Bannon wins.
In a statement, the NCAA cited "costs of litigation" as a primary factor in the decision.
This doesn't mean the beloved NCAA Football video game franchise is dead. As the NCAA points out, individual schools and leagues license their own logos and names to the game, and they are still free to do so.

The NCAA has made the decision not to enter a new contract for the license of its name and logo for the EA Sports NCAA Football video game. The current contract expires in June 2014, but our timing is based on the need to provide EA notice for future planning. As a result, the NCAA Football 2014 video game will be the last to include the NCAA’s name and logo. We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games. But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.
The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes. Member colleges and universities license their own trademarks and other intellectual property for the video game. They will have to independently decide whether to continue those business arrangements in the future.

The NCAA Ends Its Video Game Contract With EA Sports, Blames Costs Of Potentially Catastrophic Lawsuit

A group of former college athletes are currently bringing an antitrust lawsuit against the <keyword id="125824" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NCAA">NCAA</keyword>.
The group is led by former UCLA basketball player <keyword id="1737303" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ed-OBannon">Ed O'Bannon</keyword>. In the lawsuit, O'Bannon alleges that the NCAA and its licensed partners used players' likenesses in video games and other media while excluding them from the profits, and prohibiting them from negotiating the worth of their likenesses on the open market.
If the case is granted class action status, former players could sue the NCAA for damages and potentially cost the organization billions. Some even think <a href="http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8914700/ed-obannon-vs-ncaa">it could end the NCAA as we know it and amateurism in college sports for good</a> if O'Bannon wins.
Both the NCAA and EA Sports have said all along that they never used real player names or likenesses in video games. But SB Nation's Patrick Vint found <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/5/23/4357530/ed-obannon-case-ncaa-tim-tebow-ncaa-football-10">proof that Tim Tebow's name appeared in NCAA Football 10</a>.
In the game, two of those plays are called, "Shotgun TWIN QB Tebow — Motion QB Stay."
The game came out in the summer of 2009. Tim Tebow was playing at Florida at the time:

But this is clear evidence that a real player's name was explicitly used in a game.

There is of course still lots of time to shore up support. Winning the House back in November would go a long way toward that goal, and Republicans have a pretty good shot at winning <a href="https://pressgallery.house.gov/member-data/party-breakdown">less than the dozen seats</a> necessary during this fall's midterm elections. From there, McCarthy would need to convince a majority of the House to back him. That's no guarantee given the current political environment that has splintered the GOP and where some Trump-aligned House members are suggesting they want someone else. Last fall, Greene, who was stripped of all her committee assignments a month after being sworn in, suggested McCarthy hasn't clinched the speaker race, yet. LeBron James hosted California Gov. Gavin Newsom as he signed into law a bill allowing college athletes to be paid

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>Speaking at a forum on the business of college sports, athletic director Steve Patterson announced that the <a href="http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/headlines/20141021-texas-athletic-director-with-new-rules-longhorns-will-pay-each-player-10000.ece">University of Texas would start paying athletes about $10,000 a year</a> if the NCAA loses a case on compensating athletes.
The compensation would be on top of traditional scholarships and would cost the school about $6 million annually. This move would be the fallout from recent decisions that opened the door for athletes to be paid.
Of the money, $5,000 would be paid to the students so that the school can use their likeness. In a recent case brought forth by former college basketball player Ed O'Bannon, a judge ruled that the <a href="http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11328442/judge-rules-ncaa-ed-obannon-antitrust-case">NCAA cannot stop athletes from profiting off of their likeness</a> and ruled that athletes cannot be compensated less than $5,000 if their likeness is used.
The NCAA is currently <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2014/09/24/ncaa-lawsuit-case-appeal-ed-obannon-expedited-peter-shaw/16154997/">appealing that decision</a>.
The rest of the money paid to the athletes would help the students pay for costs not covered by scholarships. This became possible when the NCAA recently granted autonomy to the so-called "power conferences" (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC). Part of that autonomy is the ability to give student-athletes a cost-of-attendance stipend, <a href="http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11321551/ncaa-board-votes-allow-autonomy-five-power-conferences">estimated to be worth $2,000-5,000</a>.
There are number of huge implications here that will change sports forever.
Texas would pay all athletes.
This is significant because one of the biggest arguments against paying football and men's basketball players, the two sports that actually turn a profit, was that it would most likely be a Title IX violation.
Under Title IX, schools that receive federal funding must provide equal opportunities for all athletes. The University of Texas would avoid a potential fight and just pay all the athletes whether they are in a revenue-generating sport or not.
Other schools with less money may not choose to take the same route, instead opting to pay just athletes from revenue-generating sports. But if that happens, it will almost certainly end up in the courts to decide if it is a Title IX violation.
The rich get richer.
This decision means less money for schools to spend. But it would also strengthen the richest programs as the number of schools that can afford to pay 600 athletes about $10,000 each is going to be few and far between even in the power conferences.
No school makes more money off of college sports than Texas as the Longhorns' athletic department <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/texas-revenue-college-sports-2014-9">brought in $165.7 million in 2013</a>. An extra $6 million for athletes represents just 3.6% of the department's budget and Patterson said the school would have no problem paying it.
But at a school like Washington State University, $6 million would represent 12.7% of their $47.2 million budget.
Big Boy schools like Texas already have a recruiting advantage over schools like Washington State. The Longhorns would then be able to add the lure of $40,000 over four years and that is not just for the football players. That recruiting advantage would exist for all the sports from football to tennis, men and women.
Nothing is set in stone yet. But if the NCAA loses the O'Bannon case, athletes are going to start getting paid and college sports will have changed forever.

So what is amateurism?In page four of the NCAA Division I handbook under the heading "The Principle of Amateurism," the NCAA declares student-athletes shall be amateurs in an intercollegiate sport, and their participation should be motivated primarily by education and by the physical, mental, and social benefits to be derived.To clarify that, Oliver Luck, the NCAA's former executive vice president of regulatory affairs, said in a speech in 2015, "It would be a bad mistake to create campus employer-employee relationships with student-athletes." Paying college athletes "would distract in a very significant way from pursuing what they really need to pursue - an education... And we need to emphasize the value of that education."But let's think about that for a second. Are student-athletes able to receive the full value of that education?Richard Sherman: No, I don't think college athletes are given enough time to really take advantage of the free education that they're given.Narrator: Former student-athletes argue that the time commitment of playing a college sport, especially at the Division I level, impedes their ability to take advantage of their educational opportunity.Sherman: Show me how you're gonna get all your work done when after you get out at 7:30 or so you got a test the next day, you're dead tired from practice, and you still have to study just as hard as everybody else every day and get all of the same work done.Narrator: In fact, CBS Sports published a study on the topic with data from the Pac-12, the league Sherman competed in while at Stanford. The study surveyed 409 Pac-12 student-athletes and found 54% of athletes say they don't have enough time to study for tests, 80% of athletes say they have missed a class for competition during the academic year, and overall, athletes spend 50 hours a week on athletics. And while student-athletes feel they have the resources at their disposal to succeed academically, they don't have the time to do so.Reporter: The University of North Carolina today reeling from a blow, a really big blow, to its reputation, especially the integrity of its legendary sports program.Narrator: The University of North Carolina even went as far as committing academic fraud for 18 years. Advisers enrolled students in paper classes, which were fake classes used to inflate student-athlete GPAs to keep them eligible to play. So in many cases, these student-athletes are not receiving the education they're promised, the cost of which is by law how they're compensated.But beyond that, the cost of that education is lower than the revenue most big school athletic departments bring in. In 2014, the 10 schools that made the most money in college sports averaged revenue that was $132.5 million more than the average those schools spent on scholarships.Skip Bayless: So you get a free ride at school, but you deserve so much more than that.Stephen A. Smith: The NCAA has been allowed to be the flaming hypocrites that they are, getting away with the multitude of things that they have gotten away with in an effort to exploit these kids for years and years and years.Colin Cowherd: It's time to now pay players.Narrator: In her latest ruling, Judge Wilken denied a free market scholarship model, and the idea of paying student-athletes raises a lot of questions.Scott Davis: There would be such a large disparity between some of the athletes, and it's no different than the pros where the best players are getting paid and lower players are not, even when you trickle down to other sports that are not making as much money or generating as much attention as football or basketball.Bernard Muir: We have 36 sports, many of the sports you've just mentioned. We would have to kind of concentrate to a small number in order to pay student-athletes.Davis: There would be less incentive to go to class because they would essentially have a job already if they were earning, like, their true value to the schools.Narrator: Despite these arguments, some writers have devised plans to pay athletes the value they add to their schools. Deadspin published, "So what is the best plan for playing players? No plan at all," arguing to treat them like any other employee and that the free market is the best solution, similar to the proposal in Judge Wilken's court.SB Nation suggests the NCAA adopts the Olympic model of amateurism in which the athletes are free to gain endorsement deals and sell autographs. And LZ Granderson has called for government intervention.Granderson: It is way more complicated than just handing out checks, as well, and so I think Congress actually needs to get involved a lot more than what's happening right now.Narrator: This issue is far from decided and likely won't be anytime soon. <a href="https://twitter.com/YahooForde"></a>The news comes three days after ESPN's <keyword id="1796789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jay-Bilas">Jay Bilas</keyword> put the NCAA on blast for the merchandise on its website, ShopNCAASports.com. <a href="https://twitter.com/JayBilas">Bilas took to Twitter</a> to post multiple examples of players' corresponding jerseys resulting from searches of the players' names in the search bar.
Hours after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/search-results-ncaa-online-shop-show-jersey-link-2013-8">the media trumpeted Bilas' find,</a> the NCAA removed the search bar from its website in a laughable, nothing-to-see-here move. 
<a href="http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/dennis-dodd/23070728/ncaa-to-exit-business-of-selling-schoolrelated-online-items">According to CBS Sports</a>, today Emmert said he could "certainly see how people would think it's hypocritical" for the NCAA to profit off of player's likenesses so transparently. Emmert added, "I don't believe we should have been in that business." 
The timing of Bilas' story coincided with reports that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nothing-may-come-johnny-manziel-autograph-scandal-2013-8">NCAA was investigating Manziel</a> for possibly selling his autograph, which would be a violation of the NCAA's rules on amateurism. Instead of becoming a story about a player receiving improper benefits, it morphed into a serious look at NCAA structure and the unfair balance of everyone in the NCAA benefiting financially from players, besides the players. 
The incident is the latest black eye for the NCAA as it carries on its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obannon-ncaa-football-2010-tim-tebow-name-2013-5">antitrust legal case</a> spearheaded by former college basketball star Ed O'Bannon. If the case earns class action status, former players could sue the NCAA for damages and that could potentially reach billions of dollars.
