<br /><br /><ul><li>Astronomers at the <keyword id="8524172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-center-of-radio-astrophysics">National Center of Radio Astrophysics</keyword> (NCRA) in India have a spotted galaxy AGC 203001 with a large ring of hydrogen gas wrapped around it.</li><li>The galaxy is 260 million light-years away from Earth.</li><li>Normally, reservoirs of neutral hydrogen gas are accompanied by star formation, but there are no new stars being born in this ring of hydrogen.</li></ul>Galaxies are made up of interstellar gas, cosmic dust, entire solar systems, and stars. Normally, these stars are born in clouds of neutral hydrogen gas. More gas, more stars.<br /><br />However, one galaxy 260 million light-years from Earth shows zero signs of star formation despite having a ring of hydrogen gas four times the size of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/milky-way-galaxy-surrounded-by-massive-radio-bubbles-stretching-hundreds-of-light-years/articleshow/71106392.cms">Milky Way</a> around it. <br /><br />Astronomers at the National Center of Radio Astrophysics (<a href="https://www.tifr.res.in/TSN/article/Wadadekar%202020%20TIFR%20release_rev.pdf">NCRA</a>) spotted galaxy AGC 203001 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune. They found that even though the galaxy had a ring of hydrogen gas around it — there were no new stars being born. This is despite the fact that the ring is 380,000 lightyears wide, much bigger than the galaxy itself. <br /><br /><strong>Where did the stars go?<br /></strong><br />Nobody knows where and how these rings of hydrogen gas form. The most popular theory is that they are a result of galaxy colliding into other galaxies, but even that’s largely debated.<br /><br />In fact, there’s only one other galaxy discovered by scientists that’s has a hydrogen ring as big as AGC 203001, according to the study published in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/492/1/1/5603752">Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society</a>.<br /><br />Normally, large reservoirs of neutral hydrogen gas around a galaxy are accompanied by new stars being born within its fold. The <keyword id="1270472" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eagle-Nebula">Eagle Nebula</keyword>, for instance, is 5.5 million-year-old clouds of molecular hydrogen gas and dust. <br /><br />

<br />According to images taken by the Hubble Telescope, the clouds were dotted by clumps of gas — Evaporating Gaseous Globules (EGGs) — on their outer edges. Inside some of the EGGs were embryonic stars.<br /><br />Galaxy AGC 203001 as more than enough hydrogen — even though it’s exact distribution isn’t known — but no new stars.<br /><br />The team of NCRA astronomers even got some help as asked two French astronomers to take more sensitive images using the Canda-France-Hawaii-Telescope (CFHT) located in Hawaii. But even they didn’t turn up any signs of starlight.<br /><br /><strong>What’s next?<br /></strong><br />There isn’t any clear explanation for why AGC 203001 is star-less despite having copious amounts of hydrogen gas. Indian scientists spot a galaxy 260 million light-years away that isn't giving birth to any new stars

<ul class="summary-list"><li>NASA released new jaw-dropping images of the universe in stunning detail.</li><li>The images were enhanced using data from the James Webb Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory.</li></ul><p>NASA has shared more dazzling <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-best-images-from-first-year-2022-12">images of the universe</a>. </p><p>Four new images, released last week, provide a peek at two galaxies, a nebula, and a star cluster. The images were made possible by data collected from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/times-nasa-webb-space-telescope-spotted-something-hubble-missed">James Webb Space Telescope,</a> and the Hubble Space Telescope. </p><p>"Each image combines Chandra's X-rays — a form of high-energy light — with infrared data from previously released Webb images, both of which are invisible to the unaided eye," <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/nasas-chandra-webb-combine-for-arresting-views.html">NASA said</a> in a statement accompanying the release. </p><p>Take a look at each cosmic wonder in stunning detail below.</p><h2>The colorful cluster NGC 346 is a city of stars</h2><p>NGC 346 is a star cluster in a galaxy 200,000 light-years from Earth — the Small Magellanic Cloud, which you can see with the naked eye in some of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-night-looks-like-aoraki-mackenzie-international-dark-sky-reserve-2023-5">the darkest skies on Earth</a>.</p><div type="image" title="NGC 346" height="697" width="930" msid="100602650" hostid="261" sizebytes="151302"></div><p><a href="https://www.space.com/star-clusters">Star clusters</a> are like massive cities, but for stars. They can consist of hundreds to millions of stars that all form within regions of interstellar gas and dust called molecular clouds.</p><p>Thanks to the James Webb Telescope, you can see this gas and dust as a purple and pink mist permeating the bright and brilliant stars in the image above.</p><p>"The Chandra data also reveal young, hot, and massive stars that send powerful winds outward from their surfaces," NASA said.  </p><p>Finally, you can spot a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/star-betelgeuse-shining-brighter-than-usual-will-one-day-explode-2023-5">supernova</a> remnant in this photo. According to NASA, it's the purple cloud on the upper left of the image.</p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">The beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 1672 shows off its black holes and neutron stars</strong></h2><p>NGC 1672 is a spiral galaxy about <a href="https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-chandra-x-ray-observatory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">60 million light-years</a> from Earth.</p><div type="image" title="NGC 1672" height="892" width="1189" msid="100602652" hostid="261" sizebytes="57170"></div><p>Astronomers classify it as a "barred" spiral galaxy due to its shape, which includes, straight "barred" arms of stars near its center. The arms of other spirals twist more as they approach the core. </p><p>In the image, X-ray data from Chandra reveal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-image-reveals-black-hole-at-milky-way-galaxy-center-2022-5">black holes</a> in the process of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronomers-capture-a-black-hole-shredding-star-into-spaghetti-strands-2020-10#:~:text=Astronomers%20have%20captured%20a%20rarely,event%20astronomers%20have%20ever%20observed.">slowly consuming companion stars</a> as well as supernova remnants and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mystery-neutron-star-brightest-ever-seen-2014-10">neutron stars</a> — extremely dense cores of massive stars that have reached their end. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">The mesmerizing spiral galaxy M74 looks like a work of art</strong></h2><p>Like the Milky Way galaxy that Earth calls home, Messier 74 (M74) is a spiral galaxy, but it's 32 million light-years away. </p><div type="image" title="M74" height="882" width="1176" msid="100602653" hostid="261" sizebytes="160594"></div><p>M74 is sometimes called the Phantom Galaxy because it is relatively dim — and harder to see with small telescopes than some other galaxies. </p><p>"Webb outlines gas and dust in the infrared while Chandra data spotlights high-energy activity from stars at X-ray wavelengths," NASA said. "Hubble optical data showcases additional stars and dust along the dust lanes."</p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">The majestic Eagle Nebula M16 looks ghostly</strong></h2><p>Messier 16 (M16), also called the Eagle Nebula, is roughly 6,500 light-years away. The image depicts the region of the sky called the "Pillars of Creation," which includes dense <a href="https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-chandra-x-ray-observatory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">clouds of dust and gas</a>, seen here, containing young stars. </p><div type="image" title="M16" height="876" width="1168" msid="100602654" hostid="261" sizebytes="39682"></div><p>"The Webb image shows the dark columns of gas and dust shrouding the few remaining fledgling stars just being formed," NASA said. The epic stellar nursery is within the vast Eagle Nebula, a cloud of dust and gas which lies 6,500 light-years away.</p><p>The Hubble Space Telescope also shot the famous nursery in 1995. When comparing the two images next to one another, Webb's camera pierces through solid columns of cosmic dust, revealing hundreds of stars that Hubble couldn't see.</p><p>Below, Webb's fresh snapshot in all its uncropped glory, showing light-years-long tendrils of gas. There is no galaxy within the view, according to NASA. Webb's Near Infrared Camera captured the image using special infrared filters. Both Webb and Hubble are space-based telescopes, but they differ in many ways. Hubble sees ultraviolet light, visible light, and a small slice of infrared, while Webb primarily looks at the universe in infrared.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7">Webb</a> — which is 100 times more powerful than Hubble — can peer at objects whose light was emitted more than 13.5 billion years ago, which Hubble can't see. This is because this light has been shifted into the infrared wavelengths that Webb is specifically designed to detect. </p><p>Below on the left is Hubble's visible-light view, which shows brown and dark pillars. The telescope will help researchers more precisely count newborn stars and quantities of gas and dust, according to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-takes-star-filled-portrait-of-pillars-of-creation">NASA</a>. More accurate star counts will help build a clearer understanding of how stars form and burst out of dusty clouds over millions of years. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-telescope-successfully-deployed-space-mirror-unfolds-2022-1">infrared telescope</a> is stationed in a gravitationally stable orbit, nearly 1 million miles from Earth, but can see light from the first stars and the earliest galaxies.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The James Webb Space Telescope can capture a more complete view of galaxies, stars, and planets.</li><li>The powerful telescope is 100 times stronger than its predecessor, Hubble, and uses infrared light.</li></ul><p>NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-first-year-in-space-2021-12">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has been delivering mind-blowing views of the cosmos since it began science operations in the summer of 2022.</p><p>Before Webb, astronomers had another workhorse cosmic observatory: the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8">Hubble Space Telescope</a>. Both are space-based telescopes, but they differ in many ways. Hubble sees ultraviolet light, visible light, and a small slice of infrared, while Webb looks at the universe across the infrared spectrum.</p><p>Webb is 100 times stronger than Hubble, which allows astronomers to peer even further into space. As its first year of observations has proved, Webb is capable of taking the most striking shots yet of the universe.</p><h2>JWST showed some rings of Uranus that Hubble just can't grasp</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side comparison of recent pictures of Uranus shows the rings much brighter when taken with JWST than Hubble.  The pictures are annotated and read &quot;Hubble&quot; and &quot;JWST&quot;" height="999" width="1999" msid="100684343" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA published this <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uranus-images-shows-nasa-jwst-james-webb-outclasses-hubble-rings-2023-s?r=US&amp;IR=T">new picture</a> of Uranus — our neighborhood icy giant — taken by Webb in April 2023.</p><p>The new shot shows 11 of the planet's 13 rings clearly, including two rings that had only before been spotted by NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-voyager-pictures-45-year-journey-neptune-uranus-saturn-earth-2022-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">Voyager 2</a> probe while it flew by the planet in 1986, and by a superpowered Earth-based observatory called the Keck.</p><p>By comparison, even the outer rings of Uranus appear faint on a picture taken by Hubble in 2022.</p><p>That being said, Webb still has some competition. Hubble previously spotted the two outer rings that are missing from Webb's latest photo of Uranus. </p><p>The Webb picture above, however, was snapped very quickly — in about 12 minutes. Scientists hope if they can spend more of the behemoth's time on Uranus, they could learn a lot about its rings and its mysterious atmosphere, NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/nasa-s-webb-scores-another-ringed-world-with-new-image-of-uranus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a press release on April 6.</p><h2>Webb provided sharp views of Jupiter's auroras and storms that Hubble can't see</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of Jupiter (left) JWST image of Jupiter (right)" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984249" hostid="261"></div><p>In August 2022, Webb <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-images-webb-sees-rings-moons-hubble-cant-2022-8">snapped images of Jupiter</a> — the largest planet in our solar system. When compared to Hubble's images of the gas giant, above on the left, Webb offers a sharper and crisper image and showcases new details of Jupiter's auroras and storm systems.</p><p>In Webb's image of Jupiter, above on the right, the planet's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-great-red-spot-depth-nasa-juno-2021-10">Great Red Spot</a> — an enormous storm that has been swirling for centuries — is so bright with reflected sunlight that it appears white.</p><p>Webb's infrared image also shows Jupiter's auroras lighting up both the planet's poles. Auroras are colorful displays of light that are not unique to Earth. Jupiter has the most powerful auroras in the solar system, according to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/jupiter-s-aurora-presents-a-powerful-mystery/" rel="">NASA</a>.</p><p>On both Earth and Jupiter, auroras occur when charged particles from the sun interact with the magnetic field — known as the magnetosphere — that surrounds a planet. Jupiter's magnetic field is about <a href="https://lasp.colorado.edu/outerplanets/giantplanets_magnetospheres.php#jupiter" rel="">20,000 times stronger</a> than Earth's.</p><h2>Webb revealed thread-like filaments in the Orion Nebula hidden to Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of the Orion Nebula, left. JWST image of the Orion Nebula, right." height="1440" width="2565" msid="95984251" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA released images of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-photos-orion-nebula-show-features-hidden-to-hubble-2022-9">the Orion Nebula</a> — a massive star-forming region 1,350 light-years from Earth — that Webb took in September 2022. The nebula is the nearest stellar nursery to us.</p><p>Dense clouds of cosmic dust in the nebula obscure star-forming structures from instruments that rely on visible light, like in Hubble's image of the nebula, above to the left. By <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7" rel="">gathering infrared light</a>, Webb is able to peer through those layers of dust, giving astronomers unprecedented views of the nebula's various components.</p><p>Astronomers believe nebulae are clouds dominated by vast, tangled, thread-like structures, called filaments, which feed material like gas to form and fuel stars. Webb's images reveal these gaseous threads in great detail.</p><h2><strong>Webb's infrared technology allows it to detect elements like methyl cation that Hubble cannot</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A side-by-side image of the Orion Nebula from the Hubble Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope," height="900" width="1200" msid="101677170" hostid="261" sizebytes="15296"></div><p>Webb's images of the Orion Nebula had more information to reveal. In June 2023, researchers reported that the powerful space telescope had detected one of the key building blocks for life, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-space-telescope-found-molecular-building-block-life-orion-nebula-2023-6">methyl cation (CH3<sup>+</sup>), for the first time in space</a>.</p><p>Methyl cation can induce chemical reactions to form more-complex carbon molecules and are fundamental for organic chemistry and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-telescope-captures-enceladus-water-plume-thousands-miles-long-2023-5">potential life</a>. Its existence in the universe was theoretical until Webb found it. The researchers speculate that UV radiation provided the energy source necessary for its formation. </p><p>"This clearly shows that ultraviolet radiation can completely change the chemistry of a protoplanetary disk," Olivier Berné of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Toulouse, lead author of the study, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/webb-makes-first-detection-of-crucial-carbon-molecule" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. "It might actually play a critical role in the early chemical stages of the origins of life." </p><p>Though Hubble <a href="https://esahubble.org/images/heic0917aw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously studied</a> the Orion Nebula, it doesn't have the same light sensitivity as Webb. Chemical elements in stars and nebulae emit and absorb light at different wavelengths. The newer telescope analyzes infrared light from these objects to identify the elements. The capability has also helped Webb detect <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-detects-water-on-distant-planet-2022-7">water vapor</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-detects-sand-storms-distant-planet-2023-3">sand-like particles</a> in the atmosphere of far-away planets.</p><h2>Webb revealed hundreds of stars Hubble couldn't see in the epic Pillars of Creation</h2><div type="image" title="NASA's Hubble Space Telescope made the Pillars of Creation famous with its first image in 1995, but revisited the scene in 2014 to reveal a sharper, wider view in visible light, shown above at left. When comparing the two images next to one another, Webb's camera pierces through solid columns of cosmic dust, revealing hundreds of stars that Hubble couldn't see.</p><h2>Webb spied countless galaxies that Hubble missed</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side collage of the same area taken by the Hubble and the James Webb space telescopes." height="1500" width="2000" msid="95984255" hostid="261"></div><p>One of the first images that NASA shared from Webb was a "deep field" image — a long-exposure observation of a region of the sky, which allows the telescope to capture the light of extremely faint, distant objects. The image took less than a day to capture, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/NASAWebb/status/1546621080298835970" rel=" nofollow">NASA</a>.</p><p>When unveiling the image in July 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasas-webb-telescope-snaps-first-full-color-image-2022-7">NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said</a> that if you held a grain of sand at arm's length, that would represent the speck of universe you see in this image.</p><p>"The deep field image fills me with wonder and hope," Lisa Kaltenegger, professor of astronomy at Cornell University and director of the Carl Sagan Institute, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-hunt-for-distant-worlds-some-may-harbor-life-2022-7">previously told Insider</a>.</p><p>A side-by-side of Hubble's deep field next to Webb's reveals just how much sharper and stronger the new space observatory is.</p><h2>Webb revealed 2 stars inside this nebula whereas Hubble only saw one</h2><div type="image" title="side-by-side images of a bubbly nebula with arrows pointing to the stars at the center" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984258" hostid="261"></div><p>This is the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-captures-dying-star-s-final-performance-in-fine-detail">Southern Ring Nebula</a>, where a dying star is slowly expelling the layers of its atmosphere in successive waves, creating ever-expanding bubbles of colorful gas. Scientists knew there were two stars at the nebula's center, but couldn't see them in Hubble's images.</p><p>The new Webb picture reveals the dying star, which glows red because it's surrounded by dust, right next to its white companion star.</p><h2>An iconic cluster of 5 galaxies is much brighter and clearer in Webb's eye</h2><div type="image" title="cluster of five galaxes stephans quintet imaged by hubble on the left and jwst on the right" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984260" hostid="261"></div><p>Four of the galaxies in this image of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-sheds-light-on-galaxy-evolution-black-holes">Stephan's Quintet</a> are about 300,000 light-years away, locked in a cosmic dance as each galaxy's gravity influences the others.</p><p>The Webb image also reveals new galaxies far in the background, which weren't visible to Hubble.</p><h2>Where Hubble saw a faint dot, Webb resolved 2 distinct mystery objects</h2><div type="image" title="two faint dots one yellow one orange in space" height="362" width="482" msid="95984262" hostid="261"></div><p>Dan Coe, a researcher with the Space Telescope Science Institute, first discovered this object in deep space about 10 years ago, using Hubble.</p><p>"With Hubble, it was just this pale, red dot. We could tell it was really small, just a tiny galaxy in the first 400 million years of the universe. Now we look with Webb, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hubble-vs-webb-new-nasa-telescope-reveals-details-early-universe-2022-11">we're able to resolve TWO objects</a>," Coe said in a <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/10/26/webb-offers-never-before-seen-details-of-early-universe/" rel="">NASA release</a> in October 2022.</p><div type="image" title="gif compares hubble and jwst images of the same galaxy cluster highlighting new galaxies behind it" height="338" width="600" msid="95984263" hostid="261"></div><p>Both Hubble and Webb study the early universe through <a href="https://esahubble.org/wordbank/gravitational-lensing/#:~:text=Gravitational%20lensing%20occurs%20when%20a,accordingly%20called%20a%20gravitational%20lens.">gravitational lensing</a>. That's what happens when a cluster of distant galaxies is so massive that it warps space-time, bending the light from galaxies far in the distance behind it. That creates mirror images of those galaxies, reflected back at us.</p><p>So the imprint of the mystery objects appears in three spots in the images above. Breakouts of those three images of the system, on the right, show how much clearer Webb's images are. They clearly show two different objects.</p><p>"We're actively discussing whether these are two galaxies or two clumps of stars within a galaxy," Coe said in the release. "We don't know, but these are the questions that Webb is designed to help us answer."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8"></a></p><h2>Webb shows crashing galaxies in greater detail than Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="An animated gif shows picture from Hubble and James Webb space telescopes of NGC 3256" height="900" width="1200" msid="101677171" hostid="261" sizebytes="75784"></div><p>While Hubble's image of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jwst-image-shows-wreckage-of-two-galaxies-crashing-james-webb-2023-7">two colliding galaxies</a> is stunning, it doesn't capture all the chaos that you can see in Webb's clearer version. The two gas clouds crashed into each other about 500 million years ago. </p><p>Webb's powerful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-hidden-details-infrared-galaxies-2022-7">infrared cameras</a> picked up incredibly bright clouds made of dust and stars from the new galaxy, which is roughly 120 million light-years away. The relatively new stars "radiate enormously brightly in infrared wavelengths," ESA reported. In the Webb image, they appear bright orange and red.</p><p>Scientists hope Webb's images will help them understand what happens when two galaxies collide and provide insight into how supermassive black holes become billions of times more massive than the sun, <a href="https://www.space.com/webb-telescope-galactic-collision-image">per Space.com</a>.</p><p><em>This post has been updated with new information. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Since its launch in 1990, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-first-hubble-space-telescope-photos-since-mystery-glitch-2021-7">Hubble Space Telescope</a> has made revolutionary achievements in astronomy.</li><li>The new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7">Ja</a><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7">mes Webb Space Telescope</a> is popular, but Hubble has skills, like capturing visible and ultraviolet light, that Webb doesn't.</li></ul><p>For three decades, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-hubble-space-telescope-offline-mystery-glitch-2021-11">Hubble Space Telescope</a> has delivered breathtaking cosmic views.</p><p>As the world raves about NASA's new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-james-webb-vs-hubble-universe-pictures-show-huge-improvement-2022-7">James Webb Space Telescope</a>, aging Hubble continues to be an astronomical workhorse, providing important observations of the universe, while Webb soaks up the spotlight.</p><p>But as a pair, the telescopes are even more powerful than they are alone. Together, the space-based telescopes will give astronomers a more complete view and understanding of galaxies, stars, and planets than ever before.</p><p>"The Webb Space Telescope is good news for astronomy, and good news for the Hubble Space Telescope as well, since Webb and Hubble enhance and complement each other's unique capabilities," Jennifer Wiseman, senior project scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told Insider.</p><p>"Hubble's science return is expected to be strong, and even enhanced throughout this decade as Webb and Hubble unveil the universe together."</p><h1><strong>Through Hubble's looking glass</strong></h1><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Hubble being deployed from Discovery in 1990." height="1105" width="1730" msid="93834117" hostid="261" sizebytes="143690"></div><p>Since <a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/news/307/galileos-observations-of-the-moon-jupiter-venus-and-the-sun/#:~:text=In%201609%2C%20using%20this%20early,made%20his%20first%20astronomical%20discovery.">Galileo Galilei</a> constructed his telescope in 1609, astronomers have turned these tools to the sky. Astronomers developed these instruments significantly over time, allowing them to peer even deeper into the universe.</p><p>But their observations were constrained by Earth's atmosphere, which absorbs light before it reaches ground-based telescopes. Enter space-based telescopes. By sitting high above the distortion of Earth's atmosphere and away from light-polluted cities, observatories like Hubble provide, as <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/story/index.html">NASA puts it</a>, "an unobstructed view of the universe." </p><p>Hubble launched on the space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990. Though it was originally scheduled for only <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/content/about-the-hubble-story">15 years of service</a>, it still zips through space about 340 miles above Earth's surface, circling the planet every 97 minutes.</p><p>"Hubble is in good technical condition, even 32 years after its launch, with a strong suite of science instruments on board," Wiseman said.</p><div type="image" title="Eagle_nebula_pillars" height="2400" width="2434" msid="93834120" hostid="261" sizebytes="193162"></div><p>Over the years, Hubble's images have played a significant part in our understanding of the universe. It provided evidence of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/listen-nasa-reveals-black-hole-sounds-spooky-audio-2022-8">supermassive black holes</a> at the centers of galaxies and measurement of the expansion rate of the universe. Hubble also helped discover and characterize the mysterious <a href="https://hubblesite.org/contents/articles/dark-energy">dark energy</a> causing that expansion by pulling galaxies apart. Among its most iconic achievements is its Pillars of Creation image, taken in 1995, which shows newly formed stars glowing in the Eagle Nebula.</p><p>And Hubble's still taking stunning pictures, even after Webb began delivering images from its scientific observations in July. Recently, Hubble snapped an image of <a href="https://esahubble.org/images/potw2233a/">star-studded NGC 6540</a>, a globular cluster in the constellation Sagittarius. </p><div type="image" title="A globular cluster NGC 6540 in the constellation Sagittarius, which was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope." height="1144" width="1280" msid="93834123" hostid="261" sizebytes="450610"></div><h1><strong>Webb's infrared gaze</strong></h1><p>Both Webb and Hubble are space-based telescopes, but they differ in many ways. Hubble sees ultraviolet light, visible light, and a small slice of infrared, while Webb will primarily look at the universe in infrared.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-james-webb-space-telescope-jupiter-auroras-and-rings-2022-8">Webb</a> — which is 100 times more powerful than Hubble — will be able to peer at objects whose light was emitted more than 13.5 billion years ago, which Hubble can't see. This is because this light has been shifted into the infrared wavelengths that Webb is specifically designed to detect. </p><p>But because Webb has been designed this way, it will also miss celestial objects in the visible and ultraviolet light that Hubble can see.</p><p>"In fact, Hubble is the only major class observatory that can access UV wavelengths," Wiseman said.</p><div type="image" title="A collage shows pictures from the Hubble and the James Webb space telescopes side by side" height="1500" width="2000" msid="93834125" hostid="261" sizebytes="139224"></div><h1>A telescopic twosome</h1><p>While Webb has been referred to as Hubble's successor, the two space-based observatories will be teaming up to unveil the universe together.</p><p>Wiseman points to how they'll provide insights into how stars are born within the clouds of cosmic dust and scattered throughout most galaxies. "Hubble, for example, can detect and analyze in detail the hot blue and UV light blazing from star-forming nebulae in nearby galaxies," Wiseman said, adding, "That can be compared to the vigor of star formation in the early universe as detected with Webb."</p><p>The two space-based telescopes will also combine their gazes to peer at the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-hunt-for-distant-worlds-some-may-harbor-life-2022-7">atmospheres of other worlds</a>, looking for signs they might harbor life. </p><p>Astronomers typically look for the ingredients that sustain earthly life — liquid water, a continuous source of energy, carbon, and other elements — when hunting for life-supporting planets. In 2001, Hubble made the <a href="https://hubblesite.org/contents/news-releases/2001/news-2001-38.html">first direct measurement</a> of an exoplanet's atmosphere. </p><p>"In our own galaxy, the understanding of planets within and beyond our own solar system will be greatly enhanced with the Webb and Hubble combo," Wiseman said, adding, "Signatures of water, methane, and other atmospheric constituents will be identified using the combined spectroscopic capabilities of Webb and Hubble."</p><div type="image" title="Artist's impression of a planet orbits a yellow, Sun-like star called HD 209458 —  the first direct detection of the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a star outside our solar system." height="981" width="1280" msid="93834127" hostid="261" sizebytes="70508"></div><p>And though Webb may be seen as the shiny new toy in astronomy, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-first-hubble-space-telescope-photos-since-mystery-glitch-2021-7">Hubble's unique capabilities</a> in capturing visible and ultraviolet light still make it a sought-after tool for understanding the cosmos. "Hubble is actually at its peak scientific performance now," Wiseman said. That's thanks to a team of NASA technical experts on the ground who monitor and quickly address any technical challenges that arise, she added.</p><p>"The number of proposals from scientists around the world who want to use Hubble has risen to over 1,000 per year, with only the top fraction of these selected for actual observations," Wiseman said, adding, "Many of these complement proposed Webb observations."</p>

The Ms. Marvel video features footage of the character in her new superhero costume alongside Captain America/Sam Wilson on the new Disney Wish cruise. Green aka Squirrel Girl, Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman/Spider-Gwen, Lunella Lafayette aka Moon Girl, Takeshi Matsuya aka Wiz Kid, and a tough-to-spot Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl.</p><h2>We could be receiving Deadpool news soon</h2><div type="image" title="deadpool" height="1076" width="2000" msid="92924389" hostid="261" sizebytes="238352"></div><p>Though Deadpool doesn't make an on-screen appearance at Avengers Campus in Disneyland Paris, we may not have to wait too much longer to hear more from Deadpool in the MCU.</p><p>Marvel Studios is expected to make big announcements at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23 during a panel on upcoming projects. We wouldn't be surprised if "Deadpool 3" is among the films discussed.</p><p>This isn't the first time Marvel has acknowledged Deadpool's existence in the MCU. Disneyland Paris' Avengers Campus sneakily teases Deadpool's entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

<p>Any iconic image of the universe you can think of was probably taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Take the Eagle Nebula, for example, which is shown below. What you might not realize is that this spectacular, colored photograph was originally black and white. Now, the experts at NASA have shown how they, quite literally, color the universe by working from Hubble's world of black-and-white.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Stars, like our sun, start off as nothing more than tiny balls of gas and dust that then grow big and bright within dense clouds, like inside of the Eagle Nebula, which Hubble first photographed in 1995.</span><p>The photo itself was so spectacular that NASA gave it a name referring to the stellar formation hidden within:&#xa0;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillars_of_Creation">"Pillars of Creation.</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"&#xa0;</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But this picture didn't start off as the colorful masterpiece you see above.</span></p><p>Originally, Hubble snaps multiple pictures of an object in different wavelengths that show up in arresting black and white, shown below. Experts then use colored filters to tease out the final product.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>How do you go from black and white to awe-inspiring color? That's where Photoshop comes in.&#xa0;<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Zolt Levay, of the Imaging Team at the <a href="http://www.stsci.edu/hst/stis">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> that runs Hubble, showed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDwkDZ5dx-c">National Geographic</a> how he transforms these images.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The red, green, and blue filters he uses on (shown on the right in the GIF), represent different elements that are part of the nebula's chemical make-up. Here, red indicates the presence of sulfur, green is for oxygen, and blue represents hydrogen - the <a href="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8#q=the%20most%20abundant%20elemtn%20in%20the%20universe">most abundant element</a> in the universe.<p>The reason Levay uses the colors he does is because each element glows at different wavelengths, which scientists determine in labs here on Earth.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If you take a tube of pure hydrogen gas, for example, and </span><a href="http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/ch6/bohr.html">excite the atoms</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> so they release light, the tube will glow blue because that's the color in which hydrogen radiates most strongly. Below is an example of the colors certain gases, including Helium and Neon, release:</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p>After layering one filtered image atop the other, the final colorful image gives astronomers an idea of where and how much of each of these elements are in the nebula.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"It's pure <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> that's driving the colors," Levay explains in </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDwkDZ5dx-c&amp;t=71">a video by National Geographic</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.
