Global automakers like <keyword id="19911527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes" source="keywords">Mercedes</keyword>, Ford, GM, VW are scaling back EV investments and turning towards <keyword id="19906936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrids" source="keywords">hybrids</keyword> due to shifting consumer preferences and challenges like inadequacy and slow pace of charging infrastructure expansion. We believe the situation is no different in India, the analysts said. <keyword id="19906967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="keywords">Tata Motors</keyword> reduced its EV sales estimate and prices recently to boost adoption, citing similar hurdles. MSIL, with its tech-agnostic approach (Hybrids, EVs, CNG, Flex-fuel, etc.), is well-positioned (&amp; hedged) amidst slowing pace of electrification, the report said. Reports indicate of MSIL's strong Hybrid model launch pipeline going forward (five models in next 2-3 years). Tax rationalisation on hybrids could act as a fillip and shift consumer preference towards this choice of powertrain, it added. Till last year, global electric vehicle sales continued to outpace supplies (partially owing to semiconductor shortages) with OEs' orderbook piling to record levels. However, despite normalisation of supply chain, pace of electrification seems to have moderated. Reduction in EV prices (by <keyword id="19895433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla" source="keywords">Tesla</keyword>, Ford etc.) to drive wider adoption also isn't helping. Global automakers like Mercedes, Ford, GM, VW have deferred EV related investments, reduced their EV sales guidance indicating moderation in EV growth going ahead, the research said. Few of these auto OEMs are turning their focus back to Hybrids amidst shifting consumer preference. Domestic demand scenario for electric PVs is no different. Recently, Tata Motors (market leader with 73% share) reduced its FY24 EV sales estimate by 20% (to 75-80K units) and also cut prices by upto Rs 125K/vehicle to drive wider adoption. Lack of adequate charging infra and hesitant customers (to pay premium over ICE vehicles) are the primary reasons for slower EV adoption, the report said. Currently, MSIL is working on multiple technologies (Hybrids, EVs, Flex-fuel and Bio-gas in addition to ICE/CNG) as the company believes multiple technologies can co-exist in the medium-to-long term. Its current tech-agnostic approach is again a well thought-out approach against committing resources to a single technology, the report said.

EVs have some serious accessibility and equity challenges to overcome before they go mainstream, as there are major disparities in terms of financial and socio-demographic factors as to who has access to public EV charging, according to a <a href="https://www.bumper.com/analysis/ev-charging-station-deserts-state-ranking/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new study from vehicle report platform Bumper</a>.For example, the richest people in the US have the most access to electric car charging, with nearly 72% of public EV charge plugs in the country's wealthiest counties. The top fifth of counties in the US (those that are least distressed in terms of income, poverty, and unemployment) account for nearly 33% of all EV charge ports here. Meanwhile, more than 95% of EV chargers are in counties with majority-white populations. Because the highest-income earning areas in the US also tend to correlate with higher numbers of white and Asian residents, according to Bumper, and there are more charging stations in those areas, generally more white and Asian residents have access to public EV charging.And while over 63% of the counties in the US have charging stations, 36% of counties do not. Data indicates there were more than 51,000 public EV charging stations in the US as of March, with over 131,000 plugs. But that balances out to less than 3 charger ports for every 10,000 people in the US — and it's even fewer for more impoverished areas.Though it's not an apples-to-apples comparison, for context, <a href="https://www.api.org/oil-and-natural-gas/consumer-information/consumer-resources/service-station-faqs#:~:text=How%20many%20service%20stations%20are,are%20convenience%20stores%20selling%20fuel." target="_blank" rel="noopener">one estimate suggests</a> there are 145,000 gas fueling stations in the country.While a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-set-up-home-charging-electric-car-ev-2023-1">majority of charging can be done at home</a>, plenty of US residents live in multi-family dwellings or buildings without access to a garage and plug, making that difficult in the near-term.<h2>Automakers are in trouble without chargers</h2>Automakers say they are all in on electric cars, pouring up to $1.2 trillion into new product development, new factories, and battery investments. As per the report by CyberMedia Research (CMR), the consumers are not shying away from EVs owing to 'EV range anxiety' or 'upfront costs', or 'limited EV charging infrastructure'. "For long, limited EV charging infrastructure and range anxiety have been construed as barriers for EV adoption. However, automotive OEMs have already designed EVs with a sufficient range of up to 200 kms or more," said John Martin, analyst, smart mobility practice, CMR. "The potential consumer for EVs is more concerned by the overall EV quality. EV quality includes not just external build quality but refers to the overall quality of internal components used - including battery and others," Martin added. With a strong government policy push, including its flagship EV scheme, faster adoption and manufacturing of <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> (FAME), and more automotive OEMs prioritising EVs, India's EV momentum is gaining momentum. India's EV charging infrastructure is accelerating, with more public EV charging stations coming up. Alongside, cross-industry collaborations in the EV ecosystem will also contribute to the ramping-up of charging infrastructure. 54% Indians consumers concerned about EV quality, not range: Report

There is more perceived risk exposure for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-vehicle-resale-value-mystery-tesla-2023-1">EVs for which there is limited residual value forecasting</a> available.Meanwhile, the (albeit lower) concern about internal combustion vehicles stems from considering "their planned obsolescence in favor of EV adoption."

Americans still aren't sold on electric cars

But since EV drivers don't ever need to fuel up, they're not paying that tax. Politicians, especially in Texas, say not so fast. Starting next month, EV drivers in the state will have to pay $200 to register their plug-in cars and trucks, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/17/punitive-texas-other-states-roadblocks-ev-transition-00110125">some estimates say is double what gas-guzzling vehicle drivers might pay</a> at the station. For drivers buying a brand-new EV, the fee is $400 upfront.Texas, meanwhile, has one of the cheapest gas tax rates all US states <a target="_blank" href="https://wisevoter.com/state-rankings/gas-tax-by-state/">at $0.20 per gallon, </a>less than the national average of $0.29.The costly EV registration fees are designed to level the playing field. States claim they're losing money as more drivers go electric, but EV adoption was only at about 6% in the US at the end of 2022. New EVs sold for an average of $65,041 in November, per <a href="https://mediaroom.kbb.com/2022-12-12-As-Luxury-Share-Grows,-New-Vehicle-Prices-Hit-Record-High-in-November,-According-to-Latest-Kelley-Blue-Book-Average-Transaction-Price-Data">Kelley Blue Book</a>.Consultancy firm Deloitte's 2023 global automotive consumer study surveyed more than 26,000 people globally between September and October 2022, roughly 2,000 of which were in the US.US car-buyer intent to buy a hybrid EV, plug-in hybrid EV, or all-battery-powered EVs rose a collective 9 percentage points year-over-year, while intent to buy a gas-powered car dropped from 68% to 62% in the same period. Though automakers are eager to jumpstart consumer adoption by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/auto-companies-copy-tesla-succeed-electric-vehicles-batteries-2022-12">building cheaper EVs</a>, they've mostly introduced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-electric-cars-rivian-r1s-hyundai-ioniq-5-porsche-taycan-2022-12">high-end models</a> to date. That's because it's still expensive to build these vehicles, and it will take time to scale production and build a more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheap-electric-cars-delayed-ev-battery-prices-lithium-2022-12">cost-effective</a> battery <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-lithium-electric-vehicles-desperate-startups-beat-3-challenges-2022-4">supply chain</a>. Most research says a majority of EV-charging can be done at home, especially overnight. That means those EV drivers could rely less on public charging infrastructure. Yet, for those living in multifamily dwellings and buildings without access to charging, establishing a public network remains critical.Meanwhile, range anxiety has somewhat waned, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-just-hit-520-miles-range-ev-drivers-only-need-300-2021-9">especially as many realize they don't drive enough</a> to warrant needing a 400-plus mile battery. Regardless, range is still a factor for many prospective buyers.

Over half of US buyers think electric cars cost way too much

New Delhi, Jan 30 () State-owned firms Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) and BHEL have signed a pact to set up a network of public charging infrastructure for electric mobility along various highways across the country.
 The two entities will jointly explore opportunities in e-mobility, and fast-track the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country under the Government of India's National E-Mobility Programme, according to a statement by EESL.
 As part of the pact, BHEL will offer complete EPC (engineering-procurement-construction) solutions from concept to commissioning, while EESL will make the entire upfront investment on services, along with the operation and maintenance of the public charging infrastructure.
 The memorandum of understanding (MoU) covers collaboration in identification, planning, development and installation of charging stations at various locations.
 EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar said in the statement, "Mobility is changing rapidly, and India is powering ahead to sustainability-driven future by adopting EVs. Availability of adequate charging infrastructure is one of the key requirements for further accelerating the EV adoption in India."
 He added that setting up various charging stations at highways will boost the interest of public commuting from one city to another, which will enable a smooth and sustainable transition to a future-oriented mobility solution.
 With installation of public charging stations, the range anxiety among public will reduce, which would help in increasing the adoption of EVs in the cities across India. KKS HRS

One Hyundai dealer, on the West Coast, said they were also passing on EV-specific allocation, while another Hyundai dealer told Insider he anticipates having to turn away EVs soon.While Adam Lee, chairman of the board at Lee Auto Malls in Maine, said he's still taking all the EVs he can get, but his electric Toyotas are the slowest to sell."The only Toyotas I have that aren't presold are the electric ones, the bZ4X, and that's a little bit of a challenge," Lee said.<h2>In the EV plateau, dealers are left in the lurch</h2>In this round of growing pains for the electric car market, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dealers-lose-as-customers-place-bets-on-multiple-electric-trucks-2023-7">dealers are set up for the most trouble</a>. Car companies are likely to continue churning out the EVs they promised to investors, leaving dealers to figure out how to sell them to a new set of customers.But the most savvy executives will heed this first warning from dealers about where the demand pendulum is swinging, analysts say."Dealers know in real time with real-time feedback what the market is doing," Karl Brauer, an automotive analyst for iSeeCars, previously told Insider. "They have always acted as the first warning lights on the dash for the automotive industry."
