Discovery after a merger</a>, it started development on a "Dune" prequel series focused on the politically savvy, supernaturally powered sect of women. After some staffing changes during the development process, a retitle, and a shift to air on the company's flagship cable channel HBO, we're finally left with "Dune: Prophecy."</p><p>The series takes place 10,000 years before the birth of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-character-guide-houses-explained-differences-from-novel-2021-10">Paul Atreides </a>(played by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/timothee-chalamet-most-daring-red-carpet-looks-2022-6">Timothée Chalamet</a> in Villeneuve's films) and shortly after an event known as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-prophecy-timeline-movies-butlerian-jihad-2024-11">Butlerian Jihad</a> (when humans rose up against, defeated, and ultimately banned thinking machines). It hones in on the origins of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-movie-review-denis-villeneuve-adaptation-frank-herbert-2021-10">Bene Gesserit</a>, known at the time as the Sisterhood, and the political machinations of a young Empire.</p><p>If you're a true "Dune" fan who's read at least some of the franchise's auxiliary novels, this history should be vaguely familiar. "Dune: Prophecy" is partly based on Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction work and on "Sisterhood of Dune," a novel written by Herbert's son Brian Herbert and sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson.</p><div type="image" title="Jessica Barden as Young Valya Harkonnen in &quot;Dune: Prophecy&quot;" height="1440" width="1920" msid="115401821" hostid="261" sizebytes="33744"></div><h2 id="1e6eccec-7f11-4afc-87ba-6605dab28ca0"><strong>'Sisterhood of Dune' is a prequel novel set in the 'Dune' universe</strong></h2><p>Frank Herbert's "Dune" novels compose only a small part of the franchise. Following his death in 1986, his son Brian and Anderson began publishing "Dune" prequel novels in 1999.</p><p>"Sisterhood of Dune" is part of the "Great Schools of Dune" prequel series written by the two, and it was published in 2012. It's set 83 years after humanity's victory over the thinking machines, and as the title suggests, covers the early days of the Sisterhood. </p><p>After Raquella Berto-Anirul survives a poisoning that unlocks her genetic memory, she becomes the first Reverend Mother. That process, dubbed the Spice Agony, killed a number of sisters who were unable to withstand the poison — but it eventually turned others into Reverend Mothers themselves.</p><p>Raquella trains Valya, a daughter of the war-disgraced Harkonnen family, and lets her in on the Sisterhood's tightest-held secret: It uses computer technology to keep track of the genetic database necessary for the organization's breeding program. (As established in the "Dune" movies, the ultimate goal of that breeding program was to produce a male Reverend Mother known as the Kwisatz Haderach — but for the purposes of this show, don't worry too much about that.)</p><p>The novel also features other characters including Manford Torondo, a leader in the anti-technology Butlerian movement, and Vorian Atreides, a war hero. From the royal family, there's Emperor Salvatore Corrino and his half-siblings Roderick and Anna. Valya's brother Griffin is also present, and there are mentions of her younger sister Tula, who features prominently in the show.</p><p>There's another important sister in the book as well: Doretea, who succeeds in becoming the second-ever Reverend Mother after Raquella. She and Valya are at odds, however, and Doretea puts the Sisterhood's mission in jeopardy by revealing the existence of its thinking machine to the Emperor. Those characters include Desmond Hart, a soldier who comes into conflict with the Sisterhood, and royal half-siblings Ynez and Constantine Corrino.</p><p>Executive producer Jordan Goldberg told Business Insider that the series was "sort of" based on the novel, and that while the team adhered to the "Dune" canon in some ways, it also attempted to "infuse some new angles" into the story.</p><p>"There are bits and pieces of various different characters and plot ideas that we've taken [from the book] and fused in our 30 years later story with the Emily Watson version of Valya Harkonnen," Goldberg said. "That story is sort of our invention."</p><p>The good news is that there's plenty of "Dune" to go around, should HBO decide to continue the story. Brian and Anderson have written multiple novel series that tread "Dune" history both pre- and post-Paul Atreides, the hero from Frank Herbert's novels and Villeneuve's film adaptation.</p><p>"We would love to keep telling this story as long as they let us," Goldberg said of a potential second season. "There's so much to explore, so many angles to go. No, the way the script went along, it was such a rich journey for her.</p><p>A lot changed since I accepted that role in 2022; it was a two-year situation. But I have to say that, as difficult as it was, it was such a huge learning lesson for me.</p><p><strong>Can you elaborate on that?</strong></p><p>Well, it was difficult. It's never easy to play a role where you are going through severe, intense physical pain, and to portray that in a realistic way without hurting yourself. I think we're so used to watching violence and violent things that happen in shows, that it just seems like, oh, it's just another thing.</p><p>There's a thousand ways for an actor to learn how to act, but there's nothing out there that tells you how to take off the character, how to take off that emotion. So yeah, it was tough. It was tough coming out. It was tough going through it. But we choose these challenges so we can grow, and I definitely grew from it.</p><div type="image" title="Jihae as Reverend Mother Kasha" height="1402" width="1869" msid="115401162" hostid="261" sizebytes="28168"></div><p><strong>How did you mentally prepare to get into that headspace to portray that kind of pain?</strong></p><p>I don't believe in using my own stuff. I don't believe in Method acting. I think that is really cruel to oneself, especially in these types of scenes. And I don't know how Method acting is viable at all when you are doing physically violent things in the scenes, at all.</p><p>So, here's what I did: Women have gone through so much pain historically — we go through double the amount of pain that men do. But also in terms of having our rights, how much women had to suffer for suffrage and for just basic rights, to own a home, to have a credit card.</p><p>I decided to take this opportunity to be a portal through which all the ancestors before me, female ancestors, who had something to say, but weren't able to say it, who had all this angst because of all that they suffered — I decided I will allow them to scream through me. So it made it that much easier to be realistic, because it's based on truth, it's based on experience. That actually did make it easier for me.</p><p><strong>In terms of aftercare, how did you come down from that?</strong></p><p>Luckily, Budapest is full of hot springs, and I love going to those places and just letting it all go.</p><p>The first round of filming, it was end of 2022. My dad had just passed away, and so it was even more intense dealing with all that. I think I was able to just do the deed, the number of days it took, and then just had a wonderful, wonderful holiday.</p><p><strong>How many days were you filming that scene?</strong></p><p>It was three to four days. My body just started revolting. When I got the news that they're adding a day, my body was just shaking. It's like, no more.</p><p><strong>Was the death the last thing you shot?</strong></p><p>That was the <em>first</em> thing I shot.</p><p>More was added later. I actually requested, could I please be at my powerful first when she first appears, and then she did that scene.</p><p>But there was no chance of accommodating any of that, just because I had to be absent for five months due to the strike.</p><p><strong>When you signed on back in 2022, what was your familiarity with the "Dune" universe?</strong></p><p>I loved the movie. I decided to get the book, and then I learned that it was inspired by the book, but not taken from the book. So I decided to go and research more about Frank Herbert, and what his intentions were with the books.</p><p>I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with someone who knew Frank Herbert, and had insight in what Spice was about, how he came up with it. Paul Stamets, who's a mushroom scientist, is a friend, and he told me in the '80s they had this long walk, and Frank told him that his whole concept of the Spice came from a mushroom trip.</p><p><strong>Older Kasha is obviously no longer, but will we see your version of Kasha again at any point in the season? Or is it all just Yerin Ha's Kasha from here on out?</strong></p><p>That's a mystery to me, because I've only seen one episode.</p><p><strong>Did you and Yerin share any notes to coordinate your interpretations of Kasha?</strong></p><p>Oh, we did. But I have a lot of respect for Alison [Schapker]. We've worked together before on "Altered Carbon."</p><p>It's a miracle that anything gets made — just the amount of people you have to rely on for something to come to fruition. And in the world of COVID, when somebody gets sick, we have to stop. It's wild. Atreides is looking to avenge the death of his father from the first movie while fulfilling the ancient prophecy that an off-world prophet will bring prosperity to the planet of Arrakis.</p><p>In the sequel, we get much more Zendaya, plus new characters played by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Christopher Walken.</p><p>Critics are lauding the movie for its epic scope and powerful performances by its leads, Chalamet and Zendaya. Like that talking baby in the womb, it speaks to what's coming more than we may know."</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/dune-2-review">Inverse's Hoai-Tran Bui</a> dubbed it "the best sci-fi epic of the century" in her headline. "It's a towering feat of sci-fi cinema that will put 'Dune: Part Two' in contention for the pantheon of greatest sequels ever."</p>

Critics call 'Dune: Part Two' a 'sci-fi masterpiece' and one of the 'greatest sequels ever'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: major spoilers ahead for "Dune: Part Two."</li><li>The movie's ending has some differences from the book.</li></ul><p>The second part of director Denis Villeneuve's big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic novel "Dune" is finally in theaters, and<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dune-part-two-reviews-what-critics-are-saying-2024-2"> it does not disappoint</a>.</p><p>"Dune: Part Two" chronicles the journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) to avenge the fall of his house in the first movie while fulfilling the ancient prophecy that an off-world prophet will bring prosperity to the planet of Arrakis in the process.</p><p>Though the movie's ending takes some liberties from Herbert's book,  it should leave audiences begging for a third movie.</p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet in a cloak" height="1139" width="1979" msid="108147061" hostid="261" sizebytes="120872"></div><h2>The "Dune 2" ending sees Paul become a prophet and the start of a holy war</h2><p>Throughout the movie, Paul strengthens his bond with the Fremen, the natives who inhabit Arrakis, as he learns their ways, their language, and even starts a relationship with one of them, Chani (Zendaya).</p><p>Paul says he only wants to fight alongside the Fremen against their common enemy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stellan-skarsgard-movie-tv-roles-dune-mamma-mia-good-will-hunting-2024-2">the Baron (Stellan Skarsgård)</a>, who is responsible for the fall of House Atreides and the death of Paul's father in the first movie. However, Stilgar (Javier Bardem), one of the leaders of the Fremen, sees Paul as the "Lisan al Gaib," the Fremen term for a prophet who will unite all of Arrakis.</p><p>Paul's actions continue to turn the naysayers into believers. Still, his mother, Lady Jessica — who becomes the Reverend Mother after drinking the Water of Life — seals her son's fate.</p><p>After drinking the water, Jessica can now communicate with her unborn daughter. She sets out to convince all in Arrakis that Paul is the messiah. Paul fears a holy war is on the horizon.</p><p>In the movie's thrilling conclusion, Paul drinks the Water of Life, which is supposed to bring death to any man who consumes it. But he survives, fulfilling the prophecy that he's Lisan al Gaib and awakening his senses of the past and future. Drinking the water also reveals to him that the Baron is his Grandfather, while he has a vision of his unborn sister, Alia (Anya Taylor-Joy), all grown up.</p><div type="image" title="Sandworms attacking" height="1213" width="2300" msid="108147063" hostid="261" sizebytes="149314"></div><p>Now having the unified power of the Fremen (and a lot of sandworms), Paul takes on the Emperor (Christopher Walken) and the Baron, who has come to the capitol of Arrakis, Arrakeen, to stop Paul from disrupting their spice mining. Paul easily kills the Baron, then threatens to destroy all the spice on Arrakis unless the Emperor surrenders his throne.</p><p>Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), the Baron's youngest nephew, steps forward to have a knife duel with Paul as the Emperor's champion. Paul wins, the Emperor relinquishes the throne, and Paul agrees to wed the Emperor's daughter, Irulan (Florence Pugh), to make his rule official.</p><p>Seeing what has just transpired, the other great houses do not accept Paul taking the throne. The holy war Paul always feared would happen is now afoot. He orders Stilgar to have the Fremem board ships and launch a war against the other houses.</p><p>Chani, upset by Paul's actions, especially agreeing to wed Irulan, walks away from Paul and her people and gets on a sandworm; meanwhile, ships carrying Paul's Fremen army take to the sky.</p><div type="image" title="Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler fighting" height="3093" width="5289" msid="108147065" hostid="261" sizebytes="2245650"></div><h2>How the "Dune: Part Two" ending is different from the book</h2><p>"Dune: Part Two" ends similarly to Frank Herbert's original novel, with Paul rallying the Fremen in a battle against the Harkonnen's forces. But there are some differences to highlight.</p><p>The biggest one is that Lady Jessica hasn't given birth to Alia Atreides yet in the film, but in the book, Paul's sister is grown up by the time it comes to fighting the Harkonnens. In fact, Alia is the one who kills Baron Harkonnen using a poisoned needle called a gom jabbar. It's the same weapon the Bene Gesserit used to test Paul before he traveled to Arrakis.</p><p>Since there would need to be a time jump to introduce Alia properly, it's understandable why Villeneuve sidestepped the moment where she killed the Baron. Plus, it keeps the focus on Paul following the reveal that the villain is his Grandfather.</p><p>After the Baron's death, the Emperor picks Feyd Rautha as his champion to duel Paul for the universe's fate. In the book, Feyd attempts to sabotage the fight by trying to poison Paul, but it fails, and Paul kills Feyd by stabbing up through his jaw and through his skull.</p><p>Feyd's death is less brutal in the film, as Paul simply stabs him in the chest, which is way less complicated than trying to add in a poisoning attempt in the name of accuracy.</p><p>Then there's the awkward love triangle of it all. Although Paul tries to assure Chani that he'll always love her, she's humiliated by him when he offers to marry the Emperor's daughter, Princess Irulan.</p><p>In the movie, Chani runs off to ride sandworms in the desert to deal with her heartbreak. This is a little different from the book, where Chani stays by Paul's side as his real partner during his marriage to Irulan. Sure, they might stay together if Villeneuve gets to make "Dune 3," but it could be a while before that happens.</p><div type="image" title="Florence Pugh in &quot;Dune: Part Two.&quot;" height="1050" width="1400" msid="108147067" hostid="261" sizebytes="65542"></div><h2>Denis Villeneuve says he doesn't want to "rush" making "Dune 3"</h2><p>Though it's clear the only way to conclude the "Dune" saga on the big screen is for a third movie to be made, Villeneuve isn't clamoring to make it.</p><p>In late 2023, he said at a <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/denis-villeneuve-dune-3-script-almost-finished-1235829382/">press conference in South Korea</a> that the screenplay for the third movie, which would be based on Herbert's book "Dune Messiah," was "almost finished." So that's good; there seems to be a road map in place already for the conclusion to Paul's story.</p><p>But even if "Dune: Part Two" becomes a box office success, the director will not hustle to close the trilogy.</p><p>"There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don't want to rush it," Villeneuve told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/denis-villeneuve-on-dune-part-two-young-people-want-films-to-be-longer-jd0q2rrwp">The Times</a> earlier this month. "The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality."</p><p>So we'll likely have to wait a while until we see sandworms again.</p>

Breaking down the thrilling ending of 'Dune: Part Two,' and if we'll ever see a third movie 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Multiple outlets reported, citing unnamed sources, that a "Game of Thrones" movie is in the works.</li><li>HBO previously rejected the idea of a "Game of Thrones" movie.</li></ul><p>"<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kit-harington-game-of-thrones-finale-mistakes-story-2024-8">Game of Thrones</a>" may soon be getting the big screen treatment.</p><p>On Thursday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://deadline.com/2024/10/game-of-thrones-movie-warner-bros-in-early-development-1236163933/">Deadline</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/game-of-thrones-movie-warner-bros-1236050190/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, citing unnamed sources, reported Warner Bros. Discovery was developing a "Game of Thrones" movie. It is unclear whether the film will be based on the original series or tell a different story.</p><p>A representative for Warner Bros. Discovery did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p><p>The reports aren't a surprise. HBO, Warner Bros.'s television network, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-game-of-thrones-episodes-cost-for-production-2019-4">spent millions making </a>"<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-game-of-thrones-episodes-cost-for-production-2019-4">Game of Thrones</a>" and was rewarded with one of the biggest TV franchises of the 2010s. "Game of Thrones" won 59 Primetime Emmys and had a huge audience that grew with every season.</p><p>George R.R. Martin first suggested a "Game of Thrones" movie to tie up the franchise in a 2014 interview with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/game-thrones-movies-eyed-by-689629/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. He also said the prequel novella series "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-spinoff-prequel-stories-book-2017-5">Tales of Dunk and Egg</a>" could work on the big screen.</p><p>David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of the hit show, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/arts-culture/television/game-of-thrones-true-blood-creators-3-body-problem-netflix-d0aa9420?mod=style_feat1_magazine_pos1">The Wall Street Journal</a> in February that they wanted to finish "Game of Thrones" with three theatrical movies, but HBO rejected the idea.</p><p>After the series finale aired in 2019 and fans ached for more stories, HBO planned <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-prequel-spinoff-plans-timeline-hbo">multiple TV spin-offs</a>. "In addition, it attracted a broader mass audience of non-fantasy fans who were intrigued by its secondary genres or simply wanted those 'water cooler' moments of being able to discuss what everybody else was watching."</p><p>Shawn Robbins, director of analytics for movies at ticketing company Fandango and the founder of insights firm Box Office Theory, agreed that a "Game of Thrones" film would be a success. He pointed to the season four finale episodes that were released in US theaters for a week in 2015. They grossed $1.8 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo.</p><p>"A big screen iteration would be the perfect fit for a fictional universe with such scale, intrigue, and drama," Robbins said. "There's tremendous opportunity in bringing this IP to the biggest canvas possible as moviegoers increasingly gravitate toward event-level content."</p><h2 id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">The "Game of Thrones" news comes amid a difficult year for Warner Bros. It produced three of the biggest blockbuster hits of 2024 — "Dune: Part Two," "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beetlejuice-2-box-office-jenna-ortega-hollywood-zendaya-2024-9">Beetlejuice Beetlejuice</a>" — and co-produced the "Twisters" reboot, which made $370 million.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">Their other summer blockbusters, "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-surprising-box-office-flops-of-the-year-2024-6">Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga</a>" and "The Watchers" underperformed, surpassing their estimated production budgets by a few million dollars.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">Amid these failures, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://deadline.com/2024/07/warner-bros-discovery-layoffs-1236011779/">Deadline</a> reported in July, citing unnamed sources, that Warner Bros. Discovery made another round of layoffs on the production, business affairs, and finance side of the company.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">The biggest failure of the year was "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joker-2-folie-a-deux-reviews-critics-2024-10">Joker: Folie à Deux</a>," the sequel to the billion-dollar 2019 movie "Joker," which has made $201 million so far. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/warner-bros-spending-joker-2-budget-tom-cruise-deal-1235917640/">Variety</a> reported the film had an estimated production budget of $200 million.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">Frey said that the "Game of Thrones" movie could be a "last-ditch move to shore up their base with a reliable franchise" after their recent misfires.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">Since David Zaslav became the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022 after Warner Bros. and Discovery merged, he has said that his focus for the company is expanding its major franchises, such as "Harry Potter," DC, and "The Lord of the Rings."</p><div type="image" title="A man in a black mask with pointed ears on it and a collared cape which is tucked into the black chestplate of his armor. Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" and Matt Reeves' "The Batman" universe have also jumped to the small screen with "Dune: Prophecy" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-penguin-the-batman-timeline-explained-2024-9">The Penguin</a>."</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">Frey said franchises that extend across different media are popular in the industry right now.</p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">"The name of the game in today's media landscape is to create transmedia story worlds and cross-pollinate brands across a variety of media formats in order to create a monetization pipeline," he said. </p><p id="d2c58ca9-3bdd-4ba1-9d83-0f20246d0d20">"Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to produce a 'Games of Thrones' film is part of its strategy to double down on reliable IP in an age of ongoing change and disruption in the media industries," he added.</p>

As an active participant, I'm often preparing for the meeting, in the meeting, and then do several follow-ups after the meeting, ballooning the experience into an official time suck.</p><p>After I introduced No Meet Week to my team, one manager said she'd like to participate too, and soon, I extended it to my entire team.</p><p>What resulted was a boon to morale and overall productivity — not just for that week but throughout the rest of the year.
