<ul><li><keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> has registered a 50% growth over last year’s <keyword id="467686" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali-sales">Diwali sales</keyword>, even while it has one more sale edition coming up. </li><li>It saw 90% of its orders coming from non-metro cities.</li><li>It also saw first time users grow by 2.3 times year-on-year.</li></ul>Indian e-commerce player Snapdeal which is charting its turnaround story, received a festive boost. This year’s Diwali sales grew by 50% over last year. And, it has another edition coming up. The e-commerce player has had two Snap Diwali sales, and the third edition will be held from October 18-20. Its first time users grew by 2.3 times year-on-year. As has been the case with all others, Snapdeal too saw 90% of its orders coming from non-metro cities. For Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale too, the number of transacting customers from Tier 2 cities and beyond, doubled from last year. Meanwhile, Amazon saw 91% of its new customers coming from these towns. Amazon also registered most of its sales in the first 24 hours, from these cities. Interestingly, Snapdeal also noticed a saw a trend where users from metro cities placed Diwali gift orders for Diwali gifts for their loved ones staying in Tier II and Tier III cities. According to Snapdeal, “the trend of users buying gifts on Snapdeal and sending it to their families back home is something that started last year and has grown sharply this year. The volume of such gifts has already tripled this year and we expect more such orders over the next few days.” While clothing constituted for 60% of the gifting items, 20% of gifts were home use products.

<ul><li><keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> has doubled its network and capacity to make deliveries during the Diwali sale.</li><li>The e-commerce giant is bullish on sales for the upcoming festive sales season despite the economic slowdown and e-commerce restrictions.</li><li>Amazon has also opened up three large delivery stations this year in Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.</li></ul>Amazon India is busy preparing for the upcoming festive season in India— Diwali — which is a traditional bonanza season for all retailers. Despite the economic slowdown plaguing the Indian economy and the restrictions on e-commerce — like limitations on deep discounting — Amazon remains bullish on its outlook for the season. "We have always been excited by Diwali. Every year we have expanded our network. Every year we have been bullish and this year, again, we have been bullish about how customers are going to come and shop with us," Akhil Saxena, the Vice President of Customer Fulfillment at Amazon India told Business Insider. Why Diwali’s a big deal for Amazon The Diwali season is a big deal for Amazon because it’s the biggest festive season of the year. It’s not only a prime time for Amazon sales but also an optimal period for sellers and brands to launch new products, according to the company. "This is a time when a lot of sellers and brands bring in unique selections for customers. This is a time we also have new exclusive launches happen," explained Saxena. Amazon’s ready to take on more orders "We believe that this is going to be the biggest shopping period for Amazon in India," stated Saxena. In anticipation, Amazon India doubled its capacity and network to get products from one end of the country to the other. From 700 delivery stations across 350 cities last year, Amazon’s seller network has now expanded to 1,400 delivery stations across 700 cities. A lot of this expansion has been focused on getting last mile connectivity to some of the more "remote" and "deeper parts" of India — Tier 4 and 5 locations like Anand, Cuddapah, Azamgarh, Kodagu, and Solan. Even fleet trucks that will haul the deliveries from the seller’s city to the customer’s city has been doubled to 10,000 trucks on the road on a daily basis, connecting over 1000 cities, according to the company. For longer distances, Amazon has also increased its air capacity 1.6 times. "We have done this with three objectives in mind. The first one is to widen our reach. Secondly, to provide faster deliver promises. And thirdly, to improve the delivery experience for our customers and sellers," explained Saxena. Amazon’s creating its own footprint Amazon’s delivery network operates through third-party couriers. Only 200 out of the 1,400 delivery stations are owned by Amazon exclusively. But, this year, Amazon has expanded to three large delivery stations — a switch from the company’s usual strategy of investing in smaller delivery stations that are normally between 2,000 to 7,000 square feet. Now it has delivery stations as large as 20,000 square feet in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune. Amazon India however has many dangers lurking around the corner — not just a dull economy. Flipkart has its Big Billion Days Sale coming up soon. In the long run, Jio is foraying into the e-commerce sector, and has also promised to disrupt it.

OnePlus announces discounts on smartphones, TVs and more ahead of the festive season

<ul><li><keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> reported a 29% rise in total sales and an eleven-fold surge in profit for the quarter ended September. </li><li>However, international sales growth slowed to 13% compared to 29% in the year-ago period and 27% in the previous quarter. </li><li>On a post-earnings call, Amazon’s CFO, Brian T. Olsavsky, pointed out that the reason for this had to do with the timing of <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword>, an Indian festival characterised by bumper retail sales.</li></ul>Amazon released its <a href="https://ir.aboutamazon.com/news-releases/news-release-details/amazoncom-announces-third-quarter-sales-29-566-billion">results</a> for the June-September period yesterday. The quarter was a solid one for the global <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> giant. Total sales rose by 29% to $56.6 billion while the firm’s net profit rose more than 11 times to $2.9 billion owing to the strength of its cloud service operations. However, there was one chink in Amazon’s polished armour: international sales growth. Sales in markets outside the US grew at a paltry 13% to $15.5 billion, compared to a growth of almost 30% in the year-ago period and 27% in the previous quarter. Speaking on <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4214731-amazon-com-amzn-q3-2018-results-earnings-call-transcript?page=2">a post-earnings call</a>, Amazon’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Brian T. Olsavsky, was quick to point out that the reason for this had to do with the timing of Diwali, an Indian festival characterised by bumper retail sales of electronic appliances, smartphones and other items. Olsavsky explained that half of Amazon’s Diwali sales last year took place in Q3, while this year all Diwali sales would fall into Q4. The date for the festival, which is determined by the Hindu lunar calendar and is usually between mid-October and mid-November, shifted to November 7th this year from October 19th last year. He expects a significant bump in Q4 international sales as a result of this, especially since the e-commerce giant has already seen a 60% growth in new customers so far during the sales period, which started earlier this month. The second leg of the Diwali sale commenced on <a href="https://www.amazon.in/diwali-great-indian-festival/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=3419926031">24 October</a> and ends on 28 October. He added that orders had already come from 99% of the PIN codes all over <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. Olsavsky’s statement is indicative of the importance of the Indian market to Amazon’s global sales growth. The firm has already earmarked $5 billion worth of investments in the country as it locks horn with Walmart-owned <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> for the top spot in India’s online retail market.

A statement from Amazon’s CFO in a post-earnings call shows just how important the Indian festival of Diwali is to the firm’s international sales

<ul><li>Snapdeal added 6 million new buyers on its platform during the pandemic.</li><li>Its recent 5-day sale kicked-off on October 16 and ended on October 20. </li><li>Rajnish Wahi, Senior Vice President, Snapdeal tells us some of the trends the platform saw during its pre-Diwali sale, its plan to go deeper into Bharat and USPs that helped it stand out in the clutter of online sales. </li></ul>Indian consumers have always been value-conscious, who take pride in their haggling skills and with the pandemic, buyers are expecting greater value for their spends. Therefore, e-commerce player Snapdeal’s sale, which took place between October 16 to 20, focused on offering ‘Kum Mein Dum Diwali,’ i.e., value deals for lesser money. According to Snapdeal, less than 5% percent of retail is online and during this on-going <keyword id="36208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season">festive season</keyword>, the platform’s aim is to bring more users online and give them strong reasons to switch. Snapdeal observed that consumers weren’t willing to buy premium brands this year and wanted to access the online platforms in their regional language. So, as other e-commerce platforms offered premium brands at a discounted price, Snapdeal wanted to make online shopping more inclusive for buyers across India. It focused more on non-metro cities, which is a market with potential 400 million users and shipped orders to rural places like Palasner in Maharashtra, Abdasa in Gujarat, Kalsi in Uttarakhand, Chitkul in Himachal among many others. Ahead of the sale, Snapdeal added 1300 new pin codes to go deeper into Bharat, areas which were previously unserviceable or where users were compelled to travel to nearby towns to collect their orders. It also updated its user interface by adding eight languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Marathi. As a result, 70% of its orders were received by sellers located beyond the top 5 metropolitan areas of the country and 90% of its orders were placed from non-metro cities. We caught up with Rajnish Wahi, Senior Vice President, Snapdeal to further understand some of trends that the platform saw during its sale. Excerpts: Q. The role of engagement and communication has never been more important, especially in today’s digital-first world. How are you making sure your communication during this year's sale is relevant to consumers? Snapdeal is sharply focused on catering to the value-conscious consumers, who see e-commerce as the connecting link between their aspirations, access and affordability. Our theme for this year’s festive sale - “Kum Mein Dum Diwali '' clearly communicates our core message - your shopping rupee has more value this year. As part of our sale preparations, we had conducted a survey of nearly 1.25 Lakh users and one of the key insights was user unwillingness to pay for brand premiums this year and instead focus on the functional value of their purchases. Based on these inputs, the festive assortment was expanded in a focused manner by on-boarding additional sellers for popular products like kitchen appliances, kitchenware, bed linen, apparel, footwear and fashion accessories like watches, wallets, etc. Shaping our sale offers around the clearly-stated expectations of our customers and conveying the same unambiguously through our festive promotions and digital marketing is the sum and substance of our festive communication. Q. This year is different. People have been observed to be judicious in spending. How has the consumer sentiment improved? While 2020 has been a volatile year, we see that there are many tailwinds that are propelling our business. The pandemic has resulted in redistribution of demand between offline and online channels, with online gaining share due to its inherent advantages of reach, convenience, large assortment and safety of buying from home. It has also accelerated the familiarity and acceptance of e-commerce amongst new buyers. With the pandemic, consumers have become more price conscious and are likely to opt for lesser-priced products, while not compromising on their quality expectations. Given all of this, we have seen two sets of buyers come on Snapdeal - one which is trading up to a better assortment and one that is trading down and opting for better functional value instead of big brands. In fact, we have added 6 million new buyers on our platform in the pandemic. We are witnessing the return of enthusiasm for festivities and it is also apparent that online channels will be a preferred medium for a larger number of buyers this year. But it will also be different this year, as more people will be price conscious and will look to spend on quality products that suit their price sensibilities. In a way, Snapdeal’s “Kum Me Dum” focus is about “offering more choices at price points better than last year”, especially for popular categories like home &amp; fashion, which has been made possible by year-long focus on expanding our value selection. Q. With the on-going festive season, many other platforms will have their Sales days too. How do you then cut the clutter and make sure you win consumers? How will you be different from the other players in the segment? Snapdeal is synonymous with value e-commerce. While others in the industry are now starting to build a value segment, we at Snapdeal have been focused on “only value” for the last three years. While other platforms are making efforts to sell branded items at discounted prices, these are still not affordable for a majority of the buyers in the country. On the other hand, we are focussed on bringing the depth and diversity of India's bazaars &amp; markets to the doorsteps of our users. On Snapdeal, buyers find endless varieties of regional and local brands that not only serve their needs, but also offer immense value at affordable prices. The result of our “Kum Mein Dum” Diwali sale bears testimony to this - more than 80% of Snapdeal’s Diwali shoppers chose to buy regional &amp; local brands on Snapdeal. The strong growth of lesser-known brands relative to national/international brands has been because of two key reasons: increased choice and a substantial price difference. Our value-focused positioning runs consistently through our selection and communication and is one the reasons why 90% of our orders flow from non-metros cities and towns across the country. Q. What are some of the other trends you are expecting to see this festive? Our first sales results are out and are reflective of how close the lives of users revolve around their homes. The sale in the home products category has grown by 30% over last year and has become the largest category on Snapdeal this year, overtaking the fashion category, which has traditionally been the top-performer at Snapdeal. The growth in the home category is propelled by popular products like kitchen appliances, kitchenware, bed &amp; bath,decor,cleaning equipment, lighting and comforters &amp; blankets etc. This growth in the fitness category reflects the extra time that people have on their hands and also underscores heightened awareness about personal health &amp; fitness. This category has grown by 45% over last year led by gym essentials like tummy trimmers, push-up bars, wrist supports, fitness gloves, hand grip strengtheners etc. Users buying sports equipment like badminton racquets &amp; cricket sets and weighing machines are also strong consumer trends. While the fashion category has also grown from previous years in terms of shipped units, the growth is less than other higher-performing categories. In the fashion category, there is an increased spending on kidswear in the festive season. . Among popular picks in Snapdeal’s Diwali sale are men’s &amp; women’s grooming products, nutritional supplements, religious items (prayer books, temples accessories etc). With the deterioration of air quality in North India, the sale of N95 masks, air-purifier filters, anti-pollution skincare items, skin moisturisers, lip balms has also increased. Snapdeal also witnessed an increase in gifting via e-commerce early in this festive season. The range of festivals starting with Karva Chauth and followed by Dhanteras, Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj and Chhath Puja have become important gifting occasions for users in various parts of the country. While in the previous years, shoppers used e-commerce channels to buy and ship to families &amp; friends in other cities, this year many shoppers in metro cities are also sending gifts to people living in the same cities. This year gift cards have also been hugely popular among people to send to their friends and family, with a 3X surge in orders as compared to the festive sale last year. These included gift cards of travel, entertainment, food and retail brands which were upto 30% off. Q. How are you working towards improving the overall consumer experience? E-Commerce in India has grown beyond the first 100 Mn largely urban, English-speaking users. A market of potentially 400 Mn users is now emerging across India’s smaller non-metro cities. This is a very diverse cohort in terms of languages spoken, literacy levels, frequency of online purchases and familiarity with technology. A large part of Snapdeal’s existing user base and new users come from this cohort and all our focus and efforts are on building the right experience that our users want. That means we work tirelessly to give them a wide array of products to choose from, and at just the right prices they are looking to spend. We also make it easy in many other ways for users to buy on Snapdeal. This includes providing interfaces on our app &amp; m-site in eight Indian languages, so that they can browse through products &amp; transact in a language of their choice. We also enable conversation with our customer service agents in multiple Indian languages. Transaction and promotional messages all are available in many Indian languages. Some other ways, in which we support our users to buy is by helping them make well-informed choices through short 10-second product videos which are far more captivating and help buyers to make decisions faster than static pictures of the products concerned, easy 7-days return, no questions asked refunds policy. The festival which falls on October 25, marks the first day or the beginning of Diwali. Snapdeal’s e-store specifically provides items that people in India usually buy for Dhanteras – from utensils to silver and gold coins, gemstones, pooja items and even home decor. It will also have 12,000 copper utensils which is a hot seller during the season. The silver coins on the platform are available at a starting price of ₹149. These bars and coins are available from brands like MMTC Pamp, Bangalore Refinery, National India Bullion Refinery(NIBR), Goldsikka Jewels and more, said the company. “The design of items in the store is a combination of traditional and contemporary. They are put together in a systematic manner to ensure that shoppers have quick and easy access to all things needed on Dhanteras,” said a Snapdeal spokesperson. Snapdeal’s move to launch the e-store could work well in its favour. It is already riding high on its festive season sales. This year, its Diwali sales grew by 50% over the last year. As much as 90% of its orders came from non-metro cities. The company also got its highest site visits ever in September, with at 87 million.

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, the e-commerce shopping website launched in 2010 and backed by the Alibaba group, had a happy Diwali in the festive season that went by. In the three-day pre-Diwali sale that Paytm held in the first week of November, it sold a good number of motorcycles and bicycles, even as mobile phones and fashion apparels topped the charts. This resulted in a figure of Rs 300 crore, highlighting the company's success in implementing the online-to-offline model. 
 
Talking of the model, the purchases are made online while deliveries are done from dealerships. The company sold 500 Mahindra motorcycles and more than 1,000 bicycles in the new products category. For online sale of Mahindra Centuro motorcycles and Mahindra Gusto scooters, Paytm had an exclusive tie-up with Mahindra Two Wheelers. What helped in realizing these numbers was competitive prices on bikes and up to 25% cashback on bicycles. 
 
For mobile phones, which are nowadays seeing high online sale figures, sales increased 5-6 times as compared to the average daily orders, and fashion products also saw a similar rise in the numbers. The online-to-offline model, which was used in selling bikes and bicycles was also implemented for selling mobile phones. One-fifth of mobiles sold in the sale period were delivered by local stores and that too within two hours of the order. For this, Paytm had entered into a contract with The Mobile Store, which is country's largest phone retail chain. 
 
Maximum sales were recorded in the electronics category, which helped the site see a fivefold increase in the number of orders and gross merchandise value (GMV) during the sale in comparison to the daily averages. GMV is the measurement of the maximum price of goods and services sold on a company's platform and is higher than its actual revenue. 
 
The company had set a target of Rs 250-300 crore for this sale, and saw 6-8 lakh concurrent users. This is 10-15 times the peak traffic that the website usually gets. The next target for the company is of Rs 1,000-crore, which it has planned to achieve in the two-month period, ending December.
