How the sector has evolved For MMT founder Deep Kalra, it’s been a long journey which also includes a blockbuster listing in the US markets. “In the early days, no one was buying online. It was all search online and buy offline. That started to change in 2005, people started to buy rail tickets first,” said Kalra. The MMT founder has seen the world evolve from web to mobile web and then, an app. Kalra said that ticketing goes online very fast because it’s unidimensional, determined mainly by price and timing. The challenge, Kalra said, set in with selling hotel spaces and accommodation online. “It has now moved online with 20% of hotel bookings in the country being booked online,” he said. MakeMyTrip will soon let you book tickets through voice and your mother tongue

New Delhi, Mar 25 () Online travel firm MakeMyTrip's top executives Deep kalra and Rajesh Magow have decided to draw 'zero salary' from April 2020, while the rest of its leadership team will take a reduction of around 50 per cent in their compensation amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Group Executive Chairman Deep Kalra and its Group CEO Rajesh Magow have decided to take 'zero salary' from April 2020 as the company plans to undertake multiple "tough measures" to keep overall expenses at a minimum amid the COVID-19 outbreak. "On people costs front, both of us will take the lead and take zero salary effective April 2020, while the rest of our leadership team have also offered to take a reduction of approximately 50 per cent in their compensation," Kalra and Magow said in a message to company's employees. The group is reviewing operating costs and plans to undertake multiple tough measures to keep overall expenses at a minimum. Being an online company, the majority of the costs are variable, however the situation demands that it takes a hard look at all the fixed costs including people costs, the message said. "The last few weeks have been very tough for all of us with the sudden and sharp spread of COVID-19 in India. Our stellar performance in Q3 2020 was sadly short lived as the travel and tourism sector is one of the worst sectors that have been hit by this pandemic," Kalra and Magow said. There has been sharp drop in bookings with spiralling cancellations and the latest restrictions on domestic air/ rail/bus travel has brought the industry to a virtual standstill. Economic experts across the world are predicting it to be a global economic tsunami that will have far reaching implications for the global economy, the message said. "Therefore, we need to focus on two critical areas (i) safety and well-being of our staff, customers and the society at large, and (ii) minimising the impact to our business from these disruptions," it added. This means the group will continue to sharply reduce variable costs like advertising, sales promotions and payment gateway costs, along with optimising IT infrastructure and expenses relating to the functioning of our offices and other establishments, they added. "We will immediately cancel all discretionary spends such as events, trainings, etc. and also suspend brand building expenses during the following quarter," the message said. He also said that residences and societies should give electricity or heaters to their guards and ensure they do not use wood or coal to light open fires. An important step in all of this is containing vehicular population. However, Kalra believes it will take time. “We should have moved to hybrids or EVs long back. We should have given tax breaks to hybrids and told the same companies that you can import for 2-3 years but after that set up a line here,” he said.

MakeMyTrip CEO is one of 10,000 people planning a protest against air pollution in Gurgaon on Sunday

New Delhi, Feb 11 () Leading online travel firm MakeMyTrip on Tuesday reported a narrowing of its adjusted operating loss to USD 11 million (over Rs 78 crore) for the quarter to December 2019 and also announced elevation of Rajesh Magow as the Group CEO. The company had posted an adjusted operating loss of USD 22.2 million (over Rs 158 crore) for the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, MakeMyTrip said in a statement. The adjusted revenue for the quarter under consideration reached a new quarterly high of USD 206.7 million (over Rs 1,470 crore). It was USD 179.9 million (over Rs 1,280 crore) for the same period year ago. MakeMyTrip also announced the elevation of Rajesh Magow as the Group CEO of MakeMyTrip as founder Deep Kalra takes up the role of Executive Chairman. "We believe that separating the roles of Group CEO and Executive Chairman will allow us to focus more on long-term strategic opportunities within and outside India, while maintaining our market leading position in our existing businesses," MakeMyTrip founder Deep Kalra said during the earnings call. The board and "I have utmost confidence in Rajesh's capabilities in his elevated role to drive the next phase of growth for the Group through its three strong brands, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and Redbus. "We evaluate our financial performance based on adjusted revenue, which represents IFRS revenue after adding back promotion expenses in the nature of customer discounts, customer inducement/acquisition costs and loyalty programs cost which are reported as a reduction of revenue, and deducting the cost of acquisition of services primarily relating to sales to customers where the company acts as the principal, as we believe that adjusted revenue reflects the value addition of the travel services that we provides to our customers," MakeMyTrip said. India’s Industry Minister wants a new nodal agency for startups

AI/ML skills are an important part of new technology adoption -- a route that most Indian companies are taking today. Though the jobs exist, finding and then sustaining the right talent for these jobs is a challenge. “It’s a real, real pain. Getting good talent for cutting edge new technology is the toughest. There’s such a fight for it. You get people and train them but they leave because they are being offered much higher salaries here and there,” MakeMyTrip CEO Deep Kalra told Business Insider in an earlier interview. MakeMyTrip has over 800 people working in tech, but their <keyword id="6357343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Data-Science">data science</keyword> team still has just about 15 people. Kalra said that while the team size is modest, it’s the churn which is the problem. Pawan Goyal, chief business officer at Naukri.com too agrees that there has been a significant increase in demand for AI/ML <keyword id="6357342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword>. “This is a niche talent and is in short supply. The supply has started increasing. However, there is a long way to go to match the demand,” he said. A recent KPMG survey says that in the next few years, 50% of the workforce will be preparing for <keyword id="6355999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai">AI</keyword>, <keyword id="51645" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ML">ML</keyword> and related technologies and that will be the biggest challenge for the HR functions. As finding the right talent gets more and more difficult, companies are also investing in their own employees and helping them adapt to the latest technologies – putting them through upskilling or reskilling programmes. “Companies need to rethink on how their employees will work alongside intelligent machines and get them to upskill for newer work profiles, else they will become redundant. Many companies often hold back on upskilling due to budgetary constraints or lack of time . And hence, they are now looking at hiring employees that come some opening balance of AI / ML skills,” said Neeti sharma, senior VP at Teamlease services. A way out would be for AI/ML to be included at the academic level in graduation colleges. “AI/ML will be used across all disciplines. Hence, it should become part and parcel of graduate education. This could be initiated by the government. Also, people should make use of the large number of excellent online courses available on platforms such as Coursera to pick up AI/ML skills,” said Goyal. Picking up the need to bring in these technologies at an academic level, Plaksha university, which has been set up by 50 entrepreneurs, has even partnered with UC Berkeley to bring fellowship programs in AI and ML. The programme called Tech Leaders Fellowship claims to be a first of its kind with a specialization in AI, ML and immersion in real-world applications, industry experience and leadership. “Today, there exist more than 5,000 engineering colleges in India, producing about a million engineering graduates every year. But most engineering education is still quite traditional. Plaksha is aiming to re-imagine technology and engineering education in India and the world,” said Vineet Gupta, founding member of Plaksha University, and co-chair of TLF Program Committee. The app was first made available on the Android Play Store and in just six months, witnessed significant traction with over 39 million downloads. New Delhi, Mar 31 () Online travel firm MakeMyTrip on Tuesday said it has launched 'Stays for Saviours' initiative to support temporary accommodation needs of the medical frontline force fighting COVID-19 at special rates. "This initiative has been rolled out in partnership with hotel chains and independent hotels that are pitching in to support our healthcare heroes across 26 states and 4 Union Territories", MakeMyTrip said in a statement. It will enable medical practitioners to discover and book from over 900 hotel properties across 200 cities in India on the MakeMyTrip app, it added. During the programme, startups will have access to the global expertise and insights from the Swiss Re team, mentors from the industry, and technical enablement to work on challenging global insurance problems. At the end of 16 weeks, the selected startups will present their learnings and achievements to ecosystem partners and potential investors. 
 
The six startups identified for this programme are: 
 
· GOQii, which provides one-on-one mobile coaching and fitness tracking that helps individuals make the shift to a healthier lifestyle. 
 
· Touchkin which uses mobile-based social sensing to build a predictive care platform and enable proactive personalized care – bringing help to those who need it, from care experts or families. 
 
· Datasigns is a risk platform that forges traditional &amp; non-traditional data to facilitate financial services to those outside the formal system. It helps financial organizations access new and underserved market. 
 
· eKincare is an end to end wellness platform that integrates medical records, healthcare services and leverages predictive analytics to design wellness initiatives &amp; reduce healthcare costs. 
 
· Niki.ai is the first AI-fueled smart-purchasing assistant, with the aim to both revolutionize customer interaction and redefine the buying experience as a whole. 
 
· Arya.ai is a developer platform for Deep Learning that offers tools to build and customize neural networks, and also provides trainable modules and APIs.
