<p>Business Insider was on hand for the ribbon-cutting. We spoke to Yammer CEO <keyword id="980149" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="David-Sacks">David Sacks</keyword>, CTO <keyword id="1779809" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adam-Pisoni">Adam Pisoni</keyword>, and a host of employees about the move.</p>
<p>Microsoft's <keyword id="1779810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Danl-Lewin">Dan'l Lewin</keyword>, its top executive in Silicon Valley, was also on hand—the only sign of a very low-key presence for Yammer's new owners.</p>
<p>Lewin told us that the hands-off approach was very intentional, the result of a lot of learning on Microsoft's part on how to integrate startups. He called Yammer a "golden egg" that Microsoft wanted to handle carefully.</p>
<p>It's incubating in a beautiful new nest.</p>

But his predecessor, Steve Jobs, had a hidden talent for operations as well, said Dan'l Lewin, who worked closely with Jobs at Apple.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs is known for his marketing and design talents.</strong></li><li><strong>But according to Dan'l Lewin, an executive who worked closely with Jobs in the early days of Apple, he also was an expert when it comes to managing supply chains.</strong></li><li><strong>Current Apple CEO Tim Cook is given credit for straightening out Apple's supply chain during the company's resurrection in the late 1990s, but Lewin said Cook couldn't have done it without Jobs.</strong></li></ul><hr /><p><br />Steve Jobs is well known for being a master marketer and a product design savant.</p><p>But here's something that few people realize: He was also a genius when it came to supply-chain management, according to someone with whom he worked closely in his initial run at Apple.</p><p>Even in his first tenure at the company, which lasted from its founding in 1976 until his firing in 1985, Jobs showed that he knew how to manage the company's inventory and ensure that it manufactured its products efficiently, said Dan'l Lewin, who worked as an executive under Jobs first at Apple and then at Next, which Jobs started after he was fired from Apple in 1985.</p><p>"His focus on supply chain and inventory and those things was phenomenal," said Lewin, who recently took over as the CEO of Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum after a near-17-year run as the head of Microsoft's Silicon Valley outpost.</p><p>Lewin continued: "I just remember that relentless pursuit. But those accounts understate the importance of Jobs' own mastery of supply-chain management, Lewin said.</p><p>"I don't think Tim would be there if it wasn't for Steve," he said. "And I don't think Tim would have been able to execute as well if [Jobs] hadn't been as good as he is on that topic."</p><p>Lewin began working with Jobs at Apple in 1981 and saw the latter's supply chain knowledge at work with the Macintosh computer line, which the company launched in 1984, and then at Next. But Lewin doesn't know how Jobs acquired his expertise. Jobs had little formal training in much of anything, famously dropping out of Reed College after being enrolled there for just one semester.</p><p>He might have picked up his knowledge about supply-chain management from operations managers brought in by Mike Markkula, Apple chairman in the early 1980s, Lewin said. Regardless of where he got it from, it wasn't surprising that he knew about it, Lewin said.</p><p>"He was a sponge," Lewin said.</p><p>Citing Jobs' favorite quote that "good artists copy, great artists steal," which he always attributed to Pablo Picasso, he added, "you just observe what's around you and integrate it. And he was sort of a synthesis machine. Steve Jobs wasn't just a design and marketing genius - he had a hidden talent for logistics too, says a former Apple exec

It also has the international expertise that its biggest clients require, plus a management team and operating structure that have positioned it to succeed, he said.</p><p>"Over time I think there's a real possibility" Microsoft will top Amazon Web services in the cloud computing market, said Lewin, who last month was named the CEO of Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum, in a conversation earlier this month. "I think they've got to execute."</p><p>"Not that Amazon would be easy to catch by any means, but I think there are reasons why customers are going to want to work with Microsoft," he said. </p><p>Amazon pioneered the public cloud markets with AWS and built an early lead over rivals that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-is-battling-microsoft-azure-and-google-cloud-2017-10">it has since maintained</a>. The operation brought in $17 billion in sales last year and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fourth-quarter-2017-earnings-2018-2">accounted for the vast majority of Amazon's profits</a>.</p><p>Despite trailing behind, Microsoft has an array of advantages on which it can build, Lewin said.</p><p>The company has already had success moving clients into the so-called private cloud model, where they turn their own servers into a unified cluster running virtualized software, Lewin said. It's now helping those clients into make the move to hybrid services that combine their own data centers and its Azure public cloud service, he said.</p><p>"If you think about the core business that Microsoft brings forward into this new era, it is an incredibly powerful position," Lewin said.</p><h2>Microsoft's latest reorganization brought pain - but positioned it for long-term gains</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ab993b0631af036008b4607-2000/img4535.jpg" border="0" alt="Computer History Museum CEO Dan'l Lewin outside the Mountain View, California museum on March 19, 2018. That <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-announces-cloud-sales-reorganization-2017-7">corporate restructuring</a>, which took place last summer and involved <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-cuts-thousands-sales-jobs-2017-7">thousands of layoffs</a>, was designed to reorient the company's salesforce on selling subscriptions to Microsoft's cloud services, rather than its more traditional software model.</p><p>And the company has other strengths to tout, he said. It has a strong position in machine learning, something that developers and enterprises can tap into for their public and internal company apps. While Microsoft famously lost out in the smartphone wars to Google and Apple, it's actually done well in mobile by building services for mobile developers and apps, Lewin said.</p><p>"I'm a fan," he said. "It's competitive, and it's bound to continue that way, but I think they're going to do really well."</p><p>Another thing Microsoft can build on is its international experience, he said. Because the company itself operates in every country on the planet, it's had to figure out where to locate its data centers and scale them appropriately and how to move data around seamlessly.</p><p>"If you can solve it for yourself, you can solve it for multinationals too," Lewin said.</p><p>But perhaps the biggest things going for Microsoft are Nadella and the management team he's put in place, Lewin said. Nadella combines a thorough knowledge of the company with technical skills and operating acumen, he said.</p><p>Nadella "is constantly skiing downhill," Lewin said. "He's on the move."</p><p>During his nearly 40-year career in tech, Lewin has worked with and for a handful of the top figures in tech, including not just Nadella, but his predecessor Steve Ballmer, and Apple founder Steve Jobs. Microsoft has all the right ingredients to top Amazon in the cloud, says the company's former Silicon Valley chief

<p>Yammer has remained in the city, moving into an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammer-1355-market-grand-opening-photos-2013-1">expansive new office</a>.</p>
<p>But after a recent reorganization, not all Yammer employees are reporting to Sacks, Business Insider has learned.</p>
<p>That appears to contradict <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/Speeches/2012/06-25Yammer.aspx">statements</a> Microsoft and Yammer executives made at the time the deal was unveiled, as well as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammers-culture-microsoft-acquisition-2012-9">recent statements</a> Sacks himself has made about how Microsoft is letting him run the company.</p>
<p>The way Microsoft is handling the integration of Yammer is a matter of intense interest inside and outside the company. People want to know:</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Yammer can keep its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammers-culture-microsoft-acquisition-2012-9">distinct startup culture</a>;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Microsoft can give Yammer resources and room to grow without being heavy-handed;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Microsoft can retain entrepreneurial executives like Sacks and his top team.</span></li>
</ul>
<p>The answers to those questions bear heavily on the likelihood Microsoft will profit from the money it has spent on Yammer, and its ability to woo other fast-moving Silicon Valley startups.</p>
<p>Dan'l Lewin, Microsoft's most senior executive in Silicon Valley, told Business Insider just a couple of weeks ago that the software giant wants to be hands-off with Yammer to preserve what makes it unique. </p>
<p>Here are the details of the reorganization, according to informed sources we've spoken to with direct knowledge of the matter.</p>
<p>Yammer's disparate marketing functions used to report through different executives to Sacks. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Now corporate marketing, product marketing, and sales marketing form a single marketing group, reporting to an executive named <keyword id="1770425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Viviana-Faga">Viviana Faga</keyword>. (</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Yammer's vice president of marketing, Dee Anna McPherson, is leaving the company, according to a note she posted on Facebook.)</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>It's not clear how big the marketing group at Yammer is, but about 50 Yammer employees include marketing in their job titles on LinkedIn. Yammer has about 450 employees.</span></span></p>
<p>Faga is a <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/vivianafaga">former Salesforce and Jive marketer</a> who joined Yammer in May 2012, shortly before the Microsoft deal. She is well-regarded, according to a former colleague we spoke to.</p>
<p>Instead of reporting to Sacks, Faga will report to Jared Spataro, an <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/jaredspa">executive in Microsoft's Office division</a>.</p>
<p>At a conference in November, Spataro unveiled Microsoft's plan to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-slashes-prices-on-yammer-2012-11">sell Yammer in combination with SharePoint and Office 365</a>, its major online-collaboration offerings.</p>
<p>Sacks continues to report to Office Division executive Jeff Teper,* and most Yammer employees will continue to report up to Sacks. </p>
<p>Just not all—as Microsoft and Yammer repeatedly promised at the time the deal went through.</p>
<p>We asked Microsoft and Yammer for comment. They did not respond to our requests.</p>
<p>To be clear, this new organization may be the best thing for Yammer in the long term. A marketing organization that is well-integrated into Microsoft will likely be the best way to get a benefit from its immense sales force. We also understand that Yammer's executives, not Microsoft's, proposed this arrangement. </p>
<p>But it goes against a promise Microsoft made at the time it bought Yammer—that the business would run as it did as a startup, under the undivided leadership of its founding CEO.</p>
<p>And that's already raising questions inside and outside Yammer.</p>
<p>When we shared these facts with one well-placed Internet executive, he simply said, "Wow."</p>
<p><strong>Update: </strong>We'd previously reported that Sacks reported to Office Division president <keyword id="334327" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kurt-DelBene">Kurt DelBene</keyword>. In fact, he has reported to Office Division executive Jeff Teper since the close of the Yammer <keyword id="30334" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="acquisition">acquisition</keyword>.</p>
