When the Honourable <keyword id="15204227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shri-Hardeep-S-Puri" source="Orion">Shri Hardeep S. Puri</keyword> wrote to me about his plans to publish an anthology to celebrate the centenary of <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> and invited me as a celebrated alumnus to write a few words on this magnificent occasion, I wrote back and told him that I was the wrong person to be asked to do this. I did not believe that I fell into the category of 'eminent personalities' he had given reference to, as my years at the university (1958-61) were an academic embarrassment to me. If I were to write something, it would all be rather frivolous and not in keeping with the grace and intent of the anthology, I told him. But he persisted, and I relented. The DU (North Campus) where I sought admission and studied was, perhaps, patterned along the lines of the Cambridge and Oxford universities in the United Kingdom (UK), where several colleges stood side by side at one prominent location, many sharing common boundaries - not just of the physical built environment but also of a deeper educative ethos of imparting the requisite attitudes, values and knowledge to build generations of leaders. This is shared situatedness imbued immense camaraderie among the students. We would stroll into each other's colleges, mix with fellow students, relax at each other's canteens, travel in the same university bus to our home locations, become bitter rivals at intercollegiate competitions, and immediately forget all that animosity to join our voices in cheering for the university when it played against another. This was 1958, and I was at Kirori Mal College pursuing the BSc General course, from which I just about graduated in my final year. Academically, it was the wrong decision to take up Science, but the years spent there were an education in many other spheres, which has proved to be invaluable in my life. Looking back at the influence of my education on my career, I realize that it is the amalgamation of diverse disciplines that inspires every form of creative activity. For instance, where would writers be without a printing press, stage thespians without a proscenium and lights, painters without pigments and canvas, and, in my case, film actors without a camera? Education engenders myriad symbiotic opportunities in the spheres of technology and humanities. Chances are very high that I would not have been in cinema or in any other creative aspect of life without a grounding in education-education which is in consonance with the belief that 'what sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul'. Before leaving the hallowed grounds of university, we sculpt our identity; we strengthen and fortify our convictions in a manner that we do not fall into a trap-the trap of being swayed by the prejudices of caste and creed, and race and religion. During my days at the university, classes were held at the main university building, while the subsidiaries and practicals were conducted at the various individual colleges. It goes without saying that there is a palpable nostalgia as I think back on the hours spent at the Coffee House, or at the bus stop outside Miranda House (yes, always outside Miranda House), or on the sports field that would host intercollegiate and inter-university cricket matches, and, of course, in the classroom where regular attendance paid its dividends when it came to term-end examinations. If I may be permitted to stroll down memory lane a little more, it was at DU that I received my first serious encouragement as an actor. The tall and imposing Mr Frank Thakurdas of the dramatics club paid me my first compliment when I performed in a stage production of Maxwell Anderson's "Winterset". He recommended me to the USIS drama company to play the part of Abraham Lincoln, and chose me for the part of Zeus in Benn Levy's "The Rape of the Belt", staged at Miranda House. Mr Thakurdas remains a part of me. So does Dr Swaroop Singh, a messianic educationist who was the principal of Kirori Mal when I was studying there and later became the university's vice chancellor. Without saying it in so many words, he made us realize that we needn't aspire towards a graduation degree merely because of peer or parental pressure. He reminded us that we should aspire to become graduates because we feel the desire to be complete with the advantage of formal education. For argument's sake, some may opine today that education isn't mandatory any more, with the proliferation of what some may call 'unconventional' jobs and vocations. Some may wonder about the relevance of a degree if one cannot apply it later in one's profession. To my mind, these arguments are superfluous. To be sure, it is a bonus if we can use our education directly in our everyday work-in fact, that would be ideal. However, even if that weren't to be the case, the years spent on campus serve a much more vital purpose-they broaden our knowledge about the world around us, besides aiding personality development. Clearly, initiative in reading at the library, participating in cultural events, and asking more of ourselves and of our educationists, add up to making us aware and concerned citizens. As the proverb goes: Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. Moreover, no one can argue against the fact that campus life is the formative stage in every individual's life; that is when we 'remove the shackles', as it were. Suddenly, from a regimented life, we are free to make our decisions and heuristically zero in on the subject we want to study or the vocation we want to take up. It is a key period in any young person's life - one of choice. My father taught English and poetry, and he expected me to opt for Arts in college. When I didn't, he was accommodative and understanding. Certainly, the youth of today - in fact, of any day and age - does not want to be preached at. As time goes by, they become more clued-up and more aware of their needs and aspirations. They can see which route to take on the highway of the future. But, believe me, that is not enough. They must also know their speed limits, when to turn and when to apply the brakes. The <keyword id="151282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-delhi" source="Orion">University of Delhi</keyword> was absolutely essential in that regard. Time sped its way along, and then one fine day, almost 50 years after I joined Kirori Mal, I was informed that Delhi University was decorating me with an honorary doctorate. The first sentiment was to express my limitless gratitude. Who would have thought that an ordinary student graduate would someday be accorded such an overwhelming homecoming? My immediate response after that was to ask myself if I deserved an honour of such magnitude. Was I worthy to be honoured by my university, my very own family, which gave me some of the most wonderful years of my life? This was the same institution that inculcated in me the values and principles of life that I cherish deeply and will abide by to my dying day. Among all the accolades that I have been extremely fortunate to have received, it is, perhaps ironically, being bestowed with this honorary doctorate that I regard as one of the highest honours. A lifelong debt is owed to the University of Delhi. I feel it is only fair that I reciprocate the tremendous faith and honour the university has shown me. This anthology, edited by Shri Hardeep S. Puri ji and including some fascinating entries by other more deserving alumni of the DU family, allows me to pay my respects. Indeed, it was a privilege to be at the nation's premier seat of learning-one which has always championed the cause of education since its inception a hundred years ago. Miranda House first cutoff released for Delhi University Admissions 2019: Eco hons highest at 98.25%, check @du.ac.in

Kirori Mal College, <keyword id="6360099" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university">Delhi University</keyword> has released the first cut-off list 2019 for undergraduate courses. The highest cut-off this year stood at 98.5% for BCom (Hons) while BA English (Hons) and BA Economics (Hons) is 97% and 98.25%, respectively. The admissions under the first cut off will take place from 29 June to 1 July 2019. While the second and third cut-off list will be announced on 4 July and 9 July, respectively. Located in North Campus, Delhi University, the college is the third most preferred among the university colleges. Kirori Mal College first cutoff released for Delhi University Admissions 2019: BCom hons highest at 98.5%, check @du.ac.in

It's that time of the year again when students are seen heckling each other, harrased, sweating in the sweltering Delhi heat almost struggling to make it to the best DU colleges. It's one of the best universities recognized world over, and every year one gets to witness tremendous competition and what one may call a rat-race. 
 
With cut-offs soaring high each year, DU has never failed to astonish applicants nation-wide. It offers as many as 54000 seats in around 16 faculties and 86 departments spread over North and South Campuses. This year, however, has come with a difference - Admission procedures have gone online! 
 Online registration for 3-year UG courses on cut-off basis will begin June 1 onwards. Apart from regular candidates, applicants from sports and extra-curricular activities also have to apply online. Let's go in-depth on some of the instructions announced by <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> for UG aspirants. 
 
Instructions you should know: 
 
1) Delhi University 2016 application form will be valid for each programmes/courses offered at all colleges including St. Stephen’s College and Jesus &amp; Mary College. However, St. Stephen’s and Jesus &amp; Mary Colleges will have their separate admission criteria. Therefore, it's advisable to fill the Application Form only after ensuring the courses/programmes available in the respective colleges of the Delhi University they are interested in. 
 
2) Candidates will need to register in online mode through the official DU Admissions 2016 link to be available on its website by June 1 for applying to any UG course. 
 
3) Candidates will have to provide basic details including E-Mail, Password and Mobile Number for online registrations. Once Candidates have registered online, they need to provide their Login credentials using Login Id and Password and fill the Application Form. 
 
4) These documents will have to be uploaded online:

5)During the online application process, candidates will need to remit an application fee in the online mode using Debit Card/Credit Card/Net Banking. Those falling under General/OBC would have to pay RS 100 while those under ST/SC/PWD would have to pay Rs 50. 
 
*It is advised to verify the furnished details in the Application Form of DU Admissions 2016 before submitting the form, else no information will be corrected and changed afterwards and incorrect information may lead to cancellation of candidature. Once submitted, a copy of the same is needed for future correspondences.

Delhi's Seelampur Basti could not stop rejoicing when 14 children who grew up here were abe to make their way to the prestigious <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> by the time the second cut-off list was out. 
 
14 students, 12 of whom are girls, have secured admission in popular North campus colleges out of the 78 students who appeared for class XII examination from Seelampur slum area. 
 The highest scorer Saugatha has managed to secure a seat in Urdu Honours in <keyword id="117655" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kirori-Mal-College">Kirori Mal College</keyword> at 86.5 per cent. Her father is a street vendor. 
 
Even as the credit goes to these hard working students who have made their basti proud, significant efforts by an NGO called Asha in educating the slum children and helping them achieve higher education, has been instrumental in helping such bright kids enter Delhi University year-on-year. 
 
Last year, a whopping 114 students guided by this NGO had made the cut. Sandeep, with 94% marks, got the highest score in this group in 2015. He lived in a slum in north Delhi’s Peeragarhi and managed to secure a seat in Rajdhani College for B.Com (Hons). The year before, in 2014, least 150 slum kids got admission in DU. 
 
For these students, the main difficulty was not just to get resources to study, but a larger battle of convincing parents to allow them to pursue education as against using them to start earning and contributing to the family income. For Asha the NGO, there have been such challenges of counseling the family, especially that of girls, before they can start educating and preparing the kid for exams. Their help then extends to dressing them up with new clothes, planning their travel, helping them fill college admission forms, get educational loans for those who wish to study in private colleges. 
 
Since 2008, Asha has been helping students from the slums to go to university. In the first batch, 20 students had got admission in DU and the numbers have been increasing since then. Although this year the students qualifying to DU are less than last year, its too early to say because three cut-off lists are still awaited.

Delhi's Seelampur Basti rejoices as street vendor's daughter, 13 other slum kids make way to DU colleges on Merit

Students' groups on Monday staged protests here against <keyword id="9318857" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-delhi-university">the Delhi University</keyword> (DU) administration over the high cut-offs announced for <keyword id="2270571" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="undergraduate-admission">undergraduate admission</keyword>. The protests were held by <keyword id="10094462" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-krantikari-yuva-sangathan">the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan</keyword> (KYS) and the Left-affiliated Students' Federation of India (SFI). They alleged that high cut-offs favour students of big private schools and demanded more transparency in the admission process. DU announced its first cut-off list for undergraduate admission on Saturday with Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College for Women pegging the score at 100 per cent for three Honours courses. The 100 per cent cut-off for undergraduate admissions in DU comes after a gap of five years. Activists of the KYS burnt an effigy of the cut-off list to highlight its "discriminatory nature" and demanded that it be done away with immediately, the students' group said in a statement. "This cut-off that is decided on the basis of marks scored by students of big private schools is nothing but a policy of ensuring that the most marginalised student does not have any access to quality higher education. This ensures that students who bear the brunt of substandard public-funded school education are turned away from public-funded universities," they said. KYS activists were detained by police during the protest. Twenty activists of the KYS were protesting at the Arts Faculty, North Campus, a senior police officer said. "Eight of them were detained when they refused to disperse. They were taken to Maurice Nagar police station," the officer said. Meanwhile, the SFI submitted a memorandum to the university vice chancellor "regarding the unfair and unjustifiably high cut-offs for undergraduate admissions," it said in a statement. The memorandum was submitted by SFI Delhi president Sumit Kataria, it said. "We strongly demand a transparent admission process and we stand firmly against such exclusionary methods that only favour the high society," it added. While the 100 per cent cut-offs have been a matter of debate, the required marks were expected to be higher this year as over 1.84 lakh students scored above 90 per cent and more than 41,000 students scored above 95 per cent marks in CBSE Class 12 exams. LSR College has pegged 100 per cent score for three courses for general category aspirants -- BA (Hons) Economics, BA (Hons) Political Science and BA (Hons) Psychology. The college has the highest cut-off among Science courses as well. It has announced a cut-off of 99.75 per cent for admission to B.Sc (Hons) Statistics for general category students, while Hindu College has pegged the score for the same course at 99.25 per cent. Student organisations hold protests against high Delhi University cut-offs — demand transparency in admission process

Remember the time when you might have moved cities for further studies? If your institute or college/university had a hostel with a vacant room for you, then you were one of the lucky ones. For most others, it has been a long, and often uncomfortable, saga of living as <keyword id="96046" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paying-Guests">paying guests</keyword> (<keyword id="6356386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PG">PG</keyword>) or sharing small apartments/dorms or both. Costs have been sky-high and the quality of places to rent and put in a decent few hours of study have rarely ever matched up. ‘Student living’, quite similar to a working professional renting an apartment in a big city, has been a sizable market for a while. The demand is always high and the supply...well. But for any market of this sort, sooner or later there will be people who recognise the need to organise it and optimise the opportunities. And as is with most unorganised sectors today, there are startups trying to change it. There are approximately 34 million students in higher education institutions and the unmet demand for student housing remains as high as <a href="http://www.jll.co.in/india/en-gb/Research/Student_Housing.pdf?92f28958-cb33-440c-9835-04cddda7728e">30% – 60%</a> across the top states. According to AS Sivaramakrishnan, the Vice President at Jones Lang LaSelle Incorporated, the student living market is expected to rise to <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/real-estate/student-housing-graduates-to-pampered-league/article9981882.ece">₹160-180 billion</a>, based on data on student loans, capacity shortage and parents’ growing willingness to spend. What was once a series of shoddy, semi-furnished, cheap homes, has now transformed to swanky urban service apartments for students. Companies like <keyword id="3844186" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="CoHo">CoHo</keyword>, <keyword id="6753430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="homigo">Homigo</keyword> and <keyword id="2366577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="zolo">Zolo</keyword> are moving towards a more “consumer-centric” approach and are trying to bring in facilities like gaming rooms, laundry services, WiFi, and even discount coupons for students looking for accomodation. The startups offer single, double and triple seater rooms and their prices range between ₹23,000 and ₹12,000 (excluding electricity), which is slightly higher than what student accommodations around universities like Delhi University (DU) cost right now. Of course, cheaper options are available, but living conditions in such accommodations have been <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/not-just-admission-du-students-also-race-for-rooms-on-rent/article19298616.ece">talked about aplenty</a>. The idea is to bridge the gap between what people want and what they get. The industry is less than five years old right now with most companies having begun operations around 2015-16. In fact, most companies are still battling it out in their home bases, but expansion is inevitable. Only Zolo, which started out in Bangalore, was able to move out to Pune, Chennai, Kota and Delhi-NCR. For instance, CoHo, which is based in Delhi, houses about 2,000 students. The CoHo residences are more than 45 in number and are mostly concentrated near DU’s North campus and Gurgaon region. They are clocking an annual revenue of more than ₹170 million ($2.5 Million) as of today. How does it all work? The companies lease residences on a long-term rental agreement with building owners, lasting between three to seven years. They redesign the residence before renting them out and students sign the agreement with these companies. They also have on-site staff, like wardens, housekeepers and security guards, for property management and are responsible for providing tenants with assisted living facilities. The revenue generated from tenants is shared with property owners on either fixed rental income or revenue sharing basis. Revenue sharing allows owners to take a certain percentage (30-45%) of the total generated each month, or they can also choose to get a fixed amount every month instead. The owners receive an increment of about 7-10% every year. “Leasing property out to these companies saves a lot of efforts and money. The companies redesign the property and take care of its maintenance, so I don’t have to run around. My income also doesn’t fluctuate as much now since I get a fixed amount of revenue irrespective of whether the room is rented out or not,” said Yesh Reddy, the owner of one of the Homigo properties. A whole new world Here’s the cool part, all of the founders are less than 30 years of age and have struggled while living in paying guest (PG) accomodations. Therefore, who better but these guys to figure out exactly what students need? “The focus of brokers and PG owners is only on money and not on the students’ lifestyles. Our experience with this difficulty is definitely a driving factor for us,” said Nikunj Batheja, the co-founder and CEO of Homigo. In terms of space design, the companies try to make the rooms thematic, fun, aesthetic and clean. A lot of these companies, like CoHo, have study halls, activity rooms and even gaming rooms. (Study area at CoHo) (Gaming room at CoHo) The residences may be better than regular PGs, but lag when compared to the rest of the world. “The ambience is amazing at CoHo. It feels more like home. It is well lit, ventilated, clean and has an open kitchen that you can use. However, what’s lacking is that residents can’t redesign their rooms as per their wishes.” Muhammed, one of the residents, added. Though the furniture can be rearranged, sticking posters or putting up hooks and nails on the walls is totally off limit. That’s because the companies take up the whole property from the landlords and then essentially sublet them. So, though two people might be paying the same amount in the same flat, one might end up getting the raw end of that deal. Security and peripheral services Another major change in the industry is the use of technology to strengthen security in the residence, with biometric cards, facial recognition, CCTV, sensors etc (CoHo’s biometric security machine) The accommodations have further used technology to “make life easier”. They give students free Wi-Fi with a 24-hour backup service. There is also a facility to make online rental payments. CoHo also gives “CoHo credit” that is a payback as a way of incentivising tenants paying on time. Most of the companies have an app that helps students interact with them. The app lets you give ‘commands’ to the companies regarding housekeeping services. It can also be used for feedback and complaints, and keeps you updated about the progress in your residence, like upcoming social events and revised food menus. “It is sometimes way too systematic. So, if my friend comes over to stay at my place, I will have to register in advance with the app and even notify them if she’s going to be taking a meal. It gets chaotic,” says Khushi Agarwal, a student from Miranda, who has had first-hand experience of staying at these accommodations. <keyword id="3347984" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="co-living">Co-living</keyword> or community living is the most distinctive feature of the sector. The companies conduct different social events, like stand-up comedy, and connect all residences through internal messaging apps. This makes their accommodations vibrant and also helps in their own promotion. (Social Night at Homigo) (Friends Theme party at CoHo) However, Muhammed, a recent St. Stephen pass out who had been staying in a CoHo space in Kamla Nagar, for about two years, told Business Insider, “These places are expensive compared to the regular PGs and cater to only a certain class. It is not like I find people from all backgrounds here.” (Homigo’s hangout spots) These companies, like CoHo, have also tied up with the community of local vendors and other known companies like Foodpanda and Uber, to get discounts for their residents. In terms of hospitality, these companies take care of all the in-house repairs, laundry services, on-demand room cleaning and even concierge services, irrespective of the kind of accomodation in which a student is living. There is no extra charge for these services. The only real difference here is in the fact that these residencies are more expensive than your usual <keyword id="2630822" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="student-accommodation">student accommodation</keyword>. And given the shoestring budgets students usually live on, that could make for a big difference, as many told us. Both the students Business Insider spoke to, Khushi Agarwal and Arshad Mohammed, said you should try these only if you can afford them. The hassle of living in a PG, for the students, begins with the search. Students either look for a PG online or physically go out and roam about to find the suitable one. Otherwise, brokers take up a lot of money. Once a student finds a PG, the facilities provided to them are not very decent. Himanshi Baithla, living in Shakti Nagar, said she has shifted three PGs this year and is still not fully satisfied with her accommodations. Problems range from strict landlords, to bad food and curfew times. Though students can find PGs for as low as ₹4,000, the sacrifices are also considerable. So, essentially, it’s between the devil and the deep sea. While you get what you pay for, you cannot pin up that favourite poster. Alternately, you get better food and perhaps your laundry is taken care of. But at the end of the day, for students and their parents, it will come down to money. And in that scope, student living and the startups dealing with it, still have miles to go.

From PGs to co-living spaces: How student accommodation is changing in India

U.S. soldiers sprayed these herbicides to flush out Vietcong soldiers, who used the foliage for cover.
The main herbicide, nicknamed Agent Orange, consisted of two herbicides, one of which had been tainted with a toxic strain of dioxin, according to The Times. Dioxins are a group of chemical compounds that have similar structures; the World Health Organization has called these compounds <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs225/en/">"highly toxic</a>." The EPA characterizes dioxins as <a href="http://www.epa.gov/pbt/pubs/dioxins.htm">likely human carcinogens</a>, and it notes they've been linked to birth defects and a serious skin condition called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloracne">chlorachne</a>. 
Nearly 40 years after the Vietnam War, a particularly harmful strain of dioxin still saturates Vietnamese lands, wildlife, and groundwater - ensuring Vietnamese villagers will feel its effects for generations more. The Vietnam Red Cross estimates that Agent Orange caused at <a href="http://www.redcross.int/EN/mag/magazine2004_3/22-23.html">least 150,000 birth defects</a> since the end of the Vietnam War.

The impoverished villagers continue to have health problems, and orphanages often care for children disabled by Agent Orange. 
In recent years, the U.S. has <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/10/world/asia/us-moves-to-address-agent-orange-contamination-in-vietnam.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0">made efforts to clean up dioxin sites</a> and <a href="http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CHRG-111hhrg57498/html/CHRG-111hhrg57498.htm">has provided $46 million in general aid for disabled Vietnamese</a>. Still, some lawmakers have argued the U.S. hasn't done enough to <a href="http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CHRG-111hhrg57498/html/CHRG-111hhrg57498.htm">accept culpability</a> for the harmful effects of Agent Orange.

<h3>During the war, <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2009-12-08/health/chi-agent-orange3-dec08_1_defoliants-vietnam-war-agent-orange">the U.S. said Agent Orange was harmless</a>, according to the Chicago Tribune. While the U.S. now offers benefits to veterans who suffer certain Agent Orange-related illnesses, it <a href="http://www.aspeninstitute.org/policy-work/agent-orange/program-home/agent-orange-us-veterans">still refuses to acknowledge</a> Agent Orange caused<a href="http://www.aspeninstitute.org/policy-work/agent-orange/program-home/agent-orange-us-veterans"> health problems in Vietnam</a>, according to the Aspen Institute.
