Unlike other sectors, it isn’t easy for journalists to work remotely with utmost efficiency. The major source of income for broadcasters is advertising, which has now been curtailed. The <keyword id="7913792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="News-Broadcasters-Federation">News Broadcasters Federation</keyword> (NBF) has therefore requested the government to consider relaxing the taxes and waiving fees for news channels who operate on <keyword id="2676672" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="DD-Free-Dish">DD Free Dish</keyword> platform for the period of March and April. Apart from that, to overcome the financial impact, the NBF requested the government to relax and offer tax concessions including lowering GST rates and filing dates, postponing the deadline for TDS payments, for at least a minimum period of three months, until June 30. “The News Broadcasters Federation strongly stands and supports the Government of India’s proactive measures to combat spread of <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> virus, which has posed a health and economic threat to the country. This extraordinary situation required the government to take extraordinary measures to save the news broadcasting sector that performs a public service for free. Else, we perish,” said <keyword id="563971" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arnab-Goswami">Arnab Goswami</keyword>, President, News Broadcasters Federation.

The report also states that the ad revenue in the previous quarter, that is, the quarter ending on June 30, 2020 in respect of 366 private FM Radio stations was Rs 98.41 crore. (One FM Radio Broadcaster, M/s Gwalior Firm Private Limited, operating in the city of Guwahati, has not submitted the advertisement revenue). The report further stated that Pay DTH has attained total active subscriber base of around 70.70 million. This is in addition to the subscribers of the DD Free Dish (free DTH services of <keyword id="6408304" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword>). The total active subscriber base has increased from 70.58 million in June 2020 to 70.70 million in September 2020. The country has also achieved 100% digitization of <keyword id="6395218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cable-TV">Cable TV</keyword> network, the report noted. “This is a stupendous achievement making India as the only large country where 100% digital cable has been achieved through mandatory regulations,” added TRAI.
