Since he had no medical background, he employed doctors and scientists from the government-owned Haffkine Institute at SII. Within two years, the company produced its first therapeutic anti-tetanus serum. By 1989, his company had a diverse portfolio of DTP vaccine, which protects children from diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, anti-snake-venom serum for snakebites and measles vaccine. Week after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Kumar-Mangalam-Birla-now-owns-the-costliest-bungalow-in-Mumbai-buys-sea-facing-Jatia-House-for-Rs-425-crore/articleshow/48866856.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Kumar Mangalam Birla bought Jatia House in Mumbai for Rs 425 crore</a>, it seems Pune-based industrialist <keyword id="29334" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyrus-Poonawalla">Cyrus Poonawalla</keyword> felt a little competition there and went on to buy iconic <keyword id="770802" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lincoln-House">Lincoln House</keyword> for Rs 750 crore at the weekend sale. 
 
Lincoln House in Breach Candy area of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indias-tallest-building-will-come-up-in-one-of-its-longest-cities/articleshow/48681774.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">south Mumbai</a> , which used to house the US Consulate, to the billionaire chairman of the Pune-based Serum Institute, makes it the largest ever <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Delayed-by-30-months-and-not-ready-yet-This-is-the-status-quo-of-ready-to-move-residential-units-in-Mumbai-/articleshow/48002756.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">real estate</a> deal in the country's financial capital. 
 
The 2-acre Grade-III <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bungalow" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">bungalow</a> at Breach Candy has a built-up area of around 50,000 sq ft. 
 
However, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=residential+locations" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">property</a>, which has been on the block since 2011, was sold at a lower price than what the Americans were demanding -- a whopping Rs 850 crore. 
 
Last year, the iconic Mehrangir, the house of the father of the nation's atomic programme, Homi Bhabha, in the Malabar Hill area, was sold to the Godrej family for Rs 372 crore. 
 
The Lincoln House, which was formerly known as the Wankaner House, a palace belonging to the Wankaner Maharaja, Pratapsinhji Jhala Wankaner, was leased to the US in 1957 and was renamed as the Lincoln House and the US made its their Consulate in the city. 
 
The Maharaja sold the palace to the US Consulate to pay off his taxes after the independence. 
 
"All these properties have been bought for personal use. Therefore, their valuation can't be ascertained on market rates. There are many such properties which are likely to be put on the block in future,” said PwC India director Shashank Jain said.

With Poonawalla and Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharmaceutical, the top 10 richest Indians list has two entrants from the healthcare sector. Ranking at 46 globally, Poonawalla of the unlisted empire, is the only billionaire in the top 10 richest Indians whose wealth went up by 4% to $27 billion. Shanghvi, on the other hand, lost 6% wealth in the last one year to end at $17 billion, and is ranked 98 globally. After healthcare, the sectors that created the most Indian dollar billionaires are consumer goods and chemicals, said the Hurun report, adding that financial services, healthcare and retail sectors minted the most global billionaires. “With 13 billionaires from the automobile and auto components sector, India has the second-largest concentration of automobile billionaires after China, which has 39 billionaires. Real estate sector is the third most important sector with 5% of the sector’s global wealth coming from India. “We at M3M are even further excited about the value creation potential of the real estate sector. India is also home to the richest aviation billionaires in the world and surprisingly both of them are the founders of the same airline, IndiGo which is the largest airline in India. Energy vs new-age and tech biz Globally, billionaires who belonged to sectors like fertilizers and commodity trading, iron and steel, oil and gas, soft drinks and confectionery, casinos and hotels, sports clubs and luxury goods had a good year. Tech based and new-age businesses, however, had a bad year. “It’s a bad year for semiconductors, cloud solutions, cyber security, payment systems, e-commerce, batteries and new energy,” the report said. The report also said that two thirds of the world’s billionaires – 63% of them make physical products, while 37% sell software and services. In the last one year, the world has lost five billionaires every week. This is only the second time in the last ten years that the number of global billionaires has reduced. The world which has lost 269 billionaires, now has 3,112 billionaires. Healthcare, consumer goods minted the most Indian dollar billionaires

The top contributors to the list A closer look at the star signs of India’s richest shows that, overall, Virgos and Scorpios led the way in total contribution, with the highest number of entries followed by Pisces. Virgo, the star sign was led by the likes of Shapoor Pallonji Mistry, Anil Agarwal, Gopikishan Damani and contributed 9.6% to the Hurun Rich list. Shapoor Pallonji Mistry has total wealth of ₹70,800 crore and is fifth on the list of Richest Non-Resident Indians. Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Group has ₹66,900 cr with his family after seeing a 14% uptick. While Cancerians cumulatively saw an erosion, the likes of Gautam Adani, who has come second overall despite a tough year, contributed 8.5% to the rich list. Star power: Indian billionaires with Pisces zodiac sign had a good run last year

Nadar retained his title as the most generous billionaire in India. He and Premji are only two billionaires who donated over ₹1,000 crore in FY23. Most of Nadar’s philanthropic endeavours, who gave away ₹5.6 crore per day, are centred around arts and culture. In fact, Nadar’s generosity is more than that of eight of his counterparts put together in the top 10 list, that includes India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Premji is India’s second most generous man and his contributions went by 267% as compared to last year. “This is attributed to a significant 400% rise in dividend payouts by Wipro in FY23. An innovative strategy employed by Premji enables the trusts to benefit monetarily from the shares, while Premji retains the voting rights,” says Hurun. India’s richest man’s philanthropic outgo falls Mukesh Ambani is the third more generous man in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023, but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year. Meanwhile, Gautam Adani has seen huge wealth destruction in 2023 and conceded the richest man in India tag to Ambani. Yet, his generosity expanded. He is India’s fifth most generous man, donating ₹285 crore – and his philanthropic outgo went up by 50% since last year. He also moved up two places in the top ten list. Bajaj family also expanded its hearts and wallets — by 234%, to debut on the list this year. Cumulatively the top 10 philanthropists in India, donated ₹5,806 crore in FY23, as against a combined donation of ₹3,034 crore the year before. This year is a record year for big philanthropy. ‘personally generous’ The list has 24 people who donated in their personal capacity – and it has the usual suspects like Nadar, Premji and Nilekenis. But it has surprises too. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath donated over ₹110 crore in their personal capacity with most of these funds going towards climate and sustainability. At 44 and 37 respectively, they’re also one of the youngest in the list. Manipal’s Ranjan Pai who is 50 years old donated 92 crore, towards education. The average age of India’s most generous philanthropists remains 60. Pai’s allocation went up 512% in the last one year. The other notable names amongst who donated their personal wealth are — A M Naik of L&amp;T who donated ₹150 crore; Sushmita and <keyword id="56651" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subroto-bagchi" source="Orion">Subroto Bagchi</keyword> of Mindtree and Infosys’ Kris Gopalakrishnan and family. M A Yusuf Ali of Lulu Group also donated more in their personal capacity, and his allocation went up by 350% in FY23. “Cumulative personal donations have increased by 60% to reach ₹4,958 crore, constituting 70% of the total donations in the list. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the surge in personal philanthropy in India,” Junaid. In general, companies are also spending more as a part of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR spending of BSE 200 companies has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% in the last nine years. Their cumulative CSR spend grew from ₹5,561 crore FY15 to ₹12,271 crore in FY23. “Government, civil society, and the corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. CSR is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement,” Hurun says.

The chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani surged to the top spot as India’s richest man. India has added 38 <keyword id="6393637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="billionaires" source="Orion">billionaires</keyword> to its rich list, taking the total tally to 259. Even as the developed world is staring at a recession, India is cementing its position as an economic powerhouse. Nearly 65% of people in the rich list amassed a combined wealth of close to $1 trillion. This is akin to the combined GDP of Singapore and the UAE, Hurun said. Mukesh Ambani surpassed Gautam Adani, who dropped to the second spot, in spite of only a 2% growth in his wealth in the last one year. After Adani’s wealth more than halved in the last year, the gap between Ambani and Adani wealth widened by ₹3,30,000 crore. The top 10 has seen a lot of upheaval in the last one year – as only Shiv Nadar and Cyrus Poonawala were able to hold on to the positions they held last year. Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Shantilal Adani who was the sixth richest Indian last year, exited the top 10 list this year. He is now the twelfth richest Indian after his wealth dropped by 37%. The other notable exit is Uday Kotak, the chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank who is now the 11th richest man in the county after his wealth dropped 6% last year. However, their average wealth has decreased by 9.3%. The India Rich List added 273 new entrants and 38 new billionaires over the last year. The number of dollar billionaires also went up to 259, up 38 as compared to last year. “The trends prove that India is a shining moon in a world that is staring at recession. While the China Rich List has dropped 10% for each of this year and last year, both in terms of average wealth and in terms of the number of people that make the list. India is closing the gap,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India. India has 259 billionaires, up 38 compared to last year. While industrial products, metals &amp; mining added the greatest number of new entrants to the list. Pharma still holds the numero uno position and contributed 133 entrants to the list. “Over the past five years, many entrepreneurs have witnessed extraordinary wealth growth, some experiencing an astonishing 1,000% surge. Construction and engineering emerge as the top gainers in the top 100 list, followed closely by pharmaceuticals which has a cut-off of ₹20,000 crore,” said Anirudha Taparia, co-founder and joint CEO, 360 ONE Wealth. Funding winter &amp; founders’ wealth While 264 in the Indian rich list saw their wealth drop in the last one year, there were as many as 55 dropouts. The most notable of the dropouts is Byju Raveendran. The founder of edtech Byju’s exited the list on the back of investor markdowns. The funding winter and its ripple effects led to startup founders on the list experiencing a collective wealth dip of ₹85,000 crore. Recent policies, like the retrospective GST imposition on gaming companies and the angel tax and so on, could potentially hinder long-term wealth generation by startups, Hurun said. However, a few IPOs that stumbled last year did make a comeback. As new-age internet companies gain in value, entrepreneurs like Deepinder Goyal of Zomato and Yashish Dahiya of PB Fintech have seen their wealth increase by over 70%. Startup wealth creation will persist, albeit within a changing landscape, Junaid said. The IPO stars: Public issues and rich list debuts The stock markets also rewarded many public debuts and made their founders into billionaires. Ramesh Kunhikannan’s Kaynes Technology made a strong stock market debut. And he entered the list with a wealth of ₹8,200 crore. The spectacular listing gains provided by stock market debuts of many companies have pulled their owners into the rich list. Some of them include Jagdish Prasad Chowdhary of Titagarh Wagons, Ranjit Pendurthi of Archean Chemical Industries and Ajay P Thakker &amp; family of Jupiter Life Line Hospitals. Pavan Kumar Bajaj and Karan Bajaj of Electronics Mart India and Harsha Engineers’ Harish Rangwala and Rajendra Shantilal Shah too entered the coveted list of richest Indians after their stocks skyrocketed on debut. But there is money to be made in private markets too. Manish Kejriwal of Kedaara Capital became the first Indian Private Equity fund manager to enter the list.
