Assets worth Rs 28.65 crore of various individuals and entities linked to the case have also been attached by the federal agency after a provisional order under the <keyword id="19912399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prevention-of-money-laundering-act" source="keywords">Prevention of Money Laundering Act</keyword> (PMLA) was issued. Official sources said the party may be nam<keyword id="19956083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ED" source="keywords">ed</keyword> as an accused in the next supplementary chargesheet to be filed in this case. If so, it will be the second political party to be arraigned as accused in a money laundering investigation after the Aam Aadmi Party. AAP has recently been named by the ED in the Delhi excise policy case. The CPI(M) vehemently denied the charges of wrongdoing and money laundering. The attached assets include 18 immovable properties, valued at Rs 28.65 crore, consisting of lands and buildings in Kerala of the beneficiaries of the "scam", including an immovable property worth Rs 10 lakh registered in the name of a district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for a party office, the ED said in a statement. The attachment also includes eight movable properties, including a credit balance of Rs 63.62 lakh in eight "undisclosed" bank accounts of the CPI(M) local area committees in Thrissur, it added. The agency claimed that the CPI(M) received these funds from the beneficiaries as donations through the governing body and the party is "in possession of proceeds of crime" which has been invested in the purchase of immovable properties and credited to its five bank accounts in the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank Ltd. The bank is promoted by the party. The CPI(M) rejected the ED charges, saying it would legally and politically fight any move by the agency to arraign it in the case linked to the alleged multi-crore Karuvannur bank scam. Party state secretary M V Govindan alleged that the ED was trying to make opposition parties and their leaders accused in various cases due to political reasons. He also accused the central agency of attempting to create a smokescreen as it had failed to collect any evidence against the party. The ED believes that the land parcel attached by it was meant for the CPI(M) party office and was purchased using alleged kickbacks from the loanees or beneficiaries of the loans sanctioned by the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank. The agency has relied on the "confessional" statements of at least two accused in this case who claimed in their statements recorded before a judicial magistrate that the purported irregularities in the bank were orchestrated at the behest of CPI(M) Thrissur district committee leaders. The ED alleged that "bogus loans" were sanctioned by the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank on the same property multiple times without the knowledge of members of the society. "Investigation found benami loans were sanctioned to non-members against inflated property valuations in the names of other members and such loan funds were siphoned off and laundered by the accused beneficiaries," it said, adding that the loan amounts were disbursed in cash to avoid a money trail. "Such benami and illegal loans were sanctioned at the behest of the secretary and the governing body of the society in connivance with the then-bank manager, at the behest of the Thrissur district committee, CPI(M). "In return, the Thrissur district committee, CPI(M), collected money in the form of donations and salary cut from the beneficiaries and society committee members into their undisclosed and illegally opened bank accounts in the same society," the agency said. These funds, according to the ED, were utilised for the purchase of land worth Rs 10 lakh by the secretary of the Thrissur district committee of the CPI(M) for the construction of the party office, which has now been attached as proceeds of crime. Govindan said it has been a decades-long practice of registering the office and other assets of party units in the name of the respective district committees. What role does the party have in the office constructed by one of its local committees, he asked. But the ED is now trying to tarnish the image of the CPI(M) in the name of the assets of one such party unit, Govindan claimed. "We will fight it legally and politically. We haven't got any notice in this regard so far," he told reporters. The ED filed a chargesheet in this case against 55 accused entities in November last year. The money laundering case stems from 16 FIRs registered by the <keyword id="20086884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kerala-police" source="keywords">Kerala Police</keyword> (<keyword id="20146853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crime-branch" source="keywords">Crime Branch</keyword>) in Thrissur in 2010. Considering the scope of probe into the case, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has transferred it to the crime branch, he said. The FIR was registered earlier this month at Matunga police station in Mumbai against 32 people, including the "promoter" of the app Saurabh Chandrakar, <keyword id="142062" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ravi-uppal" source="Orion">Ravi Uppal</keyword>, Shubham Soni and others for allegedly committing the fraud since 2019, police earlier said. As per the FIR, the accused have defrauded people of nearly Rs 15,000 crore. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently claimed a forensic analysis and a statement made by a 'cash courier' led to "startling allegations" that Mahadev betting app promoters have paid about Rs 508 crore to the Chhattisgarh chief minister so far, and that "these are subject matter of investigation". Later, the BJP released a video of Shubham Soni saying he was the owner of the app and had the "proof" of paying Rs 508 crore so far to Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel. The chief minister has rejected the claim. On November 5, the Centre issued blocking orders against 22 illegal betting platforms, including the Mahadev app, on ED's request. The action of banning the 22 illegal betting platforms follows investigations conducted by the ED against an illegal betting app syndicate and subsequent raids in connection with the Mahadev app in Chhattisgarh. Nevertheless, there are signs that the logic of retribution may be prevailing within Israel's military leadership.On Monday, following a horrific series of atrocities committed by Hamas, including the mass killing and kidnapping of Israeli women and children, Israel's minister of defense ordered that the border with Gaza be closed and no food be allowed to enter. The Israeli government also cut off Gaza's electricity and <a href="https://twitter.com/Israel_katz/status/1711332854070640935" target="_blank" rel="noopener">water supply</a>. On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces <a href="https://www.haaretz.co.il/news/politics/2023-10-10/ty-article-live/0000018b-1645-d465-abbb-16f71d060000#1720386730" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly said</a> that the waves of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza would seek to emphasize "damage, not accuracy."Starving civilians is a war crime. "There is no context in which such a policy can be legal," Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer, <a href="https://twitter.com/sfardm/status/1711417277503905927" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote on X</a>. Bombing a military objective without taking into account the potential loss of civilian life is also war crime. The code obliges Israeli soldiers to "above all, preserve human life" and "limit his use of force so as to prevent unnecessary harm to human life and limb, dignity, and property."But in Gallant's view, the targets are less than human. "We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly," he said. The following day, Gallant said that he was removing "all restraints" from Israel's response. Gallant's rhetoric was echoed by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu himself, who referred to the adversary as "savages," a word also used by US Senator Marco Rubio, who said "they have to be eradicated." Rubio's <a href="https://www.rubio.senate.gov/icymi-rubio-joins-cnns-the-lead-with-jake-tapper/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">official website</a> clarified that by "they," he meant Hamas, not the whole of Gaza. But the scope of all three statements is less than clear in context.<h2>Netanyahu's scorched-earth doctrine</h2>Israel argues that the root-and-branch destruction of Hamas is a reasonable response to the October 7 attacks. Most observers acknowledge that Hamas, as an organization, is a legitimate military target and that its continued existence now poses an obvious ongoing threat to Israel's security.But the emerging doctrine of Netanyahu's government appears to go much further than the objective of eliminating Hamas. While Israel's campaign is still in its early days, cutting off food and water suggests it could become a scorched-earth campaign of retribution against two million people who have been suffering for years under a combination of Israel's blockade and Hamas' rule. Make no mistake — the objective of such a scorched-earth campaign would have little to do with Israel's security. War crimes are seldom punished if they are endorsed by a superpower. So far, the US and Europe have done little in public to push back against the Netanyahu's stated policy of vengeance. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said he told Netanyahu that democracies "are stronger when we act according to the rule of law. Terrorists purposely target civilians, and kill them. We uphold the rule of law. It matters. There's a difference." But so far, Gallant's public order to begin starving two million people, a clear violation of international law, has gone unmentioned. <h2>Donald Trump endorsed and pardoned war crimes</h2>For Americans, much of this — the horror, the missed warnings, the near-instant promises of retribution — carries echoes of 9/11. So do the 22 dead Americans among more than 1,000 who perished from the Hamas attacks. What's different is the openness with which Netanyahu's government is declaring their intent to set international law aside. In the past, such extreme actions usually happened under a shroud of deniability. Violent US interventions in Southeast Asia and Latin America that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians were conducted in secret, not as a matter of official policy. Even during the bloody post-9/11 period, Western governments refrained from announcing that they intended to commit war crimes. The CIA had its lawyers arguing that indefinite detention could be reconciled with due process, and that waterboarding and beatings were not torture. The US military set mathematical limits on civilian casualties — the more collateral damage, the higher the level of approval required within the chain of command. This attempt to impose the legal principles of proportionality and necessity on drone strikes <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/12/18/us/airstrikes-pentagon-records-civilian-deaths.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was deeply flawed</a>, but an attempt was made. Donald Trump was different. When it came to terrorists, he said during his first campaign, "you have to take out their families," an explicit endorsement of war crimes. As president, Trump took some small steps towards institutionalizing his stated preference for a higher volume of killing with less discriminate standards. He dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal on Afghanistan and mused about using nuclear weapons. He loosened the rules governing drone strikes. But it was his rhetoric most of all that changed how his base talked about war. He made little distinction between political opponents, immigrants, and armed enemies on the battlefield. He pardoned Americans convicted of intentionally killing unarmed civilians. In his view, respect for the lives of civilians in a conflict zone was not a sign of strength, but weakness. The shamelessness with which Trump called for the intentional killing of civilians was something new. The horrific rape and murder case that shook India In January 2018, the brutal rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir sent shivers across the nation, raising questions on the safety of women in India. According to the J&amp;K police, the girl was forced to take sleeping pills, dragged and locked inside a nearby temple. She was repeatedly raped for the next three days, said the Jammu and Kashmir police. The girl was strangled to death as one of the accused tried to rape her yet again. Her bloodied corpse was found in the forest. The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested eight men in connection with the crime. Reports of two police officers accepting bribes for covering up the crime also surfaced. One of the arrested suspects is juvenile. India toughned its juvenile law for serious crime including rape after the horrific December 2016 Delhi gangrape. The bill allows juveniles between 16 and 18 years of age to be treated as adults for serious crimes like rape or murder. The police officials said that they have DNA tests and physical evidence of the defendants connected with Asifa’s case. The officials also said that they interviewed over 130 witnesses who “unequivocally corroborated the facts that emerged’’.

But soon thereafter, she began to question the ethics behind her content, she told Insider. "I grew up thinking that this was for entertainment," she said. "I never truly thought about how it was affecting the people behind the screen ... I started to feel a lot of questions of is this ethical? Am I doing this right? Can I do this in a way that's helpful instead of harmful?"In August 2018, Rae started inviting victims' family members onto her channel for collaborative videos to help them seek justice.She isn't alone. As the true crime genre becomes more ubiquitous on YouTube, a medium that affords greater interactivity than exists in podcasts or docuseries, Rae is part of a new crop of YouTubers who aren't just talking about cases, but actively trying to help solve them.Another channel, Oregon-based collective Adventures With Purpose, has pioneered a sub-genre within "crimetube" of channels tackling cold cases by scuba diving to dredge up sunken vehicles and drowning victims.The team has solved 23 cold cases to date – and is branching out into active investigations, <a href="https://www.insider.com/missing-16-year-old-california-girl-may-have-been-abducted-police-2022-8">such as the recent Kiely Rodni case</a> – thanks to its mastery of sonar technology. How some true-crime YouTubers are trying to solve cases, rather than just talking about them

Andy Ogles (R-TN) claims he's a real estate magnate, policy expert, and sex crime investigator.</li><li>Much of the experience on Ogles' resume is overblown or embellished, Insider found.</li></ul>During far-right Republican Andy Ogles' successful campaign for Congress last fall, he advertised himself as a successful entrepreneur and real estate investor, a tax policy expert, and the former leader of an international nonprofit rescuing sex trafficking victims.But the freshman member from Tennessee embellished many aspects of his resume, according to interviews, business and property records, tax filings, and local newspaper archives. Ogles' inflations invite comparisons to his Republican congressional colleague, Rep. George Santos of New York, who has seen <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-employment-college-pulse-shooting-residence-history-2022-12">nearly every aspect of his past</a> called into question. Ogles' business experience seems to be limited to owning two restaurants, a short-lived travel agency, and becoming licensed as an insurance agent. His real estate investments appear limited to a few adjacent parcels of land, including one he lives on, in rural Tennessee, and he reported no rental income from his properties Insider found.Ogles claimed he studied economics and international relations, and worked at two right-wing think tanks that focus on economic policy. But his educational credentials and supposed policy expertise were thrown into question this week by <a href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/businessman-economist-cop-international-sex-crimes-expert-the-stories-of-congressman-andy-ogles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nashville's NewsChannel5</a>, which reported Ogles had studied languages in college – not economics or international policy, as he had claimed. Ogles' supposed experience rescuing sex trafficking victims helped propel him into national headlines in his first week in Congress. But his representations about that work are vastly overstated, according to public records and a former manager at an anti-trafficking nonprofit where Ogles worked. In a statement emailed after this article was published, the spokesperson called Insider's reporting "another attempt by the liberal media to make something out of nothing. It's a simple case of condensing a resume for the sake of brevity on the campaign trail, and partisan hacks are trying to turn it into a headline for clicks."In interviews and debates, Ogles elided the distinction between two jobs he supposedly held, giving the impression that he was a swashbuckling law enforcement officer rescuing human trafficking victims.During one debate during his campaign, Ogles described himself as "a former member of law enforcement" who worked "in international sex crimes, specifically child trafficking." One podcast he appeared on last month introduced him as a businessman and philanthropist known for "leading an international effort to end the scourge of human trafficking."In reality, he was a lackluster fundraiser for a small Nashville nonprofit and a volunteer sheriff's deputy who was let go for skipping training.<h3>Fighting international sex crimes and trafficking</h3>When discussing his support for a more militarized border with Mexico, Ogles has repeatedly referenced his involvement in combating human trafficking and working to fight international sex crimes."We are sitting on our hands while our kids are being poisoned by fentanyl and children are being raped on the border, and we act like we don't know what the solution is," Ogles said on a podcast from the lobbying firm Ballard Partners in January. "That offends me, and as someone who has worked in that space, who has seen the horrors of human trafficking, I am fed up and sick and tired of the excuses."Ogles appears to have been referencing his work with Abolition International, a small Nashville nonprofit founded by gospel music singer Natalie Grant. His congressional website says that Ogles felt "the call to serve his community" and became "the COO of Abolition International, overseeing operations and investments in 12 countries to fight human trafficking." <div type="image" title="Ogles talks with Kevin McCarthy during the 3rd day of votes for speaker of the House." height="1333" width="1778" msid="98028455" hostid="261"></div>"I went into the law enforcement lane for a period of time, and from there I went into the international sex crimes and ran global operations," Ogles said on the Ballard Partners podcast.Ogles worked there for a year in 2011, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=63efdab123282119f313556c&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fandyogles%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">according to his LinkedIn profile</a>. But his role in the organization was minimal, and the group's work had nothing to do with the US-Mexico border, said a former Abolition International manager, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons. This person's identity is known to Insider.Abolition International hired Ogles to help with marketing and to fundraise while two of the organization's leaders were on maternity leave, the former manager said, recalling that he was not particularly successful at bringing in new sources of revenue."He was always talking about how much money he was going to be able to raise for us, and it never happened," the former Abolition International manager said. <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/display_990/753179471/2012_06_EO%2F75-3179471_990_201112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tax filings</a> show Abolition International raised less than $200,000 in the year Ogles was on staff. At the time Ogles was involved with Abolition International, the organization was much smaller than he later claimed. Although it did eventually grow into an organization with partnerships in 12 countries, when Ogles worked there it primarily made grants to a handful of safe houses in India, Moldova and the U.S., in addition to supporting an internship program in Greece, the former manager said. And while he joined the Williamson County volunteer sheriff deputy reserves in 2009, he was kicked out after two years, <a href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/businessman-economist-cop-international-sex-crimes-expert-the-stories-of-congressman-andy-ogles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nashville's NewsChannel5</a> reported. Ogles' commission was revoked for "not meeting minimum quarterly hours" and making "no progress in field training," documents show."It is such a stretch for him to represent himself as an expert, or someone who was in the field, and for it to have informed his views on policy," the former manager said. That hasn't stopped Ogles from making political hay from his time at Abolition International.During the State of the Union, Ogles yelled "It's your fault!" when President Joe Biden mentioned fentanyl overdoses and the border."That was a very visceral moment for me," Ogles later told The Hill, mentioning his former involvement in work combating human trafficking. "He could close that border with the stroke of a pen, and he hasn't had the courage to do it."<h3>An entrepreneur and economic expert</h3>In addition to describing himself as a crusader against human trafficking, Ogles has also cast himself as a successful entrepreneur and small business owner in the years before he entered politics. His past as a savvy businessperson gave him unparalleled insight into "the frustrations of having to contend with local government," he told the Columbia Daily Herald in 2018. Ogles references his experience as an entrepreneur in nearly every interview, and has also styled himself as an expert on tax policy and healthcare with an academic background in economics. He has specifically touted his work with Arthur Laffer, an economist who served in the Regan administration and founded the right-wing Laffer Center for Supply-Side Economics."I am an economist," Ogles told C-SPAN last month, responding to a question about his budget priorities. "I had the privilege of working for Dr. Laffer," he continued, referencing his time at the Laffer Center, where Ogles has said he was the executive director.In an interview with Insider, Laffer said that Ogles primarily was involved in fundraising, and that he wasn't sure how Ogles had gotten the title of executive director. "I didn't know he had that title," Laffer said. "The titles aren't really important for the office. We all clean the dishes." Laffer didn't dispute Ogles's characterization of himself as an economist: "An economist is a person who works in economics. I don't think a PhD is required to be called an economist."Ogles also worked as a Tennessee lobbyist for Americans for Prosperity, a Koch brothers-funded think tank advocating for lower taxes.But decades-old news articles and state licensing and real estate records indicate that Ogles has embellished his business experience. And <a href="https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/businessman-economist-cop-international-sex-crimes-expert-the-stories-of-congressman-andy-ogles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reporting from Nashville's NewsChannel 5</a> found that Ogles has no real expertise or education in tax policy, economics, or healthcare. Ogles briefly operated a travel agency franchise in 1996, but state business records show the LLC had dissolved by the next year. The agency was later dinged for $7,000 in arbitration. In the mid-1990s, he purchased an existing donut shop in Franklin, Tennessee. With the help of his family, he turned it into a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_and_three" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"meat and three"</a> serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Tennessean reported in 2001, and later opened a second branch. But Ogles' experience in real estate investing appears confined to the homes he and his wife, Monica, a physical therapist, have purchased for their family to live in, according to property records. Ogles currently owns four adjacent parcels in rural Maury County, which he purchased for roughly $1.1 million. He bought the bulk of that property for $660,000 during his congressional campaign last September, county records show. Ogles refused to release required asset disclosures during his campaign. He finally published the disclosures last month, five days after <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SabZ4yGSMow" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NewsChannel5 investigated</a>. Those documents show that his assets include between $250,000 and $500,000 of "real estate investment property."Ogles' academic background in economics also appears questionable. Nashville's NewsChannel5 found that Ogles had actually studied English and Allied Language Arts. In 2001, Ogles told a local reporter that he had studied Russian, Japanese, and German with an intent of pursuing international business.A spokesman for Middle Tennessee State University, where Ogles got his bachelor's degree from, said he couldn't supply information about Ogles' attendance. Schools often allow students and alumni to request that such records be kept private. Ogles has shared photos of a diploma with other media outlets that doesn't indicate what subjects he studied. <h3>Gaining a reputation on Capitol Hill</h3>The freshman lawmaker has developed a reputation as one of the more hard-right members of the Republican conference in his first month-and-a-half on Capitol Hill.A member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, Ogles was one of the 20 Republicans who initially refused to support Kevin McCarthy's House speaker bid — until he offered concessions on the rules governing the chamber. As a lawmaker, Ogles has introduced just one piece of legislation — a <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/812" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> that would repeal the entirety of the Inflation Reduction Act, which President Joe Biden <a href="https://twitter.com/townhallcom/status/1623149056116629504?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even referenced</a> during his State of the Union address this month. Ogles has quickly fallen in with a cohort of Republican lawmakers who are largely used to batting away controversy, whether it comes from extreme positions and pronouncements or accusations of embellishments and flagrant lying.In addition to George Santos, freshman Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, who recently <a href="https://twitter.com/RepLuna/status/1624847190693711874?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appeared on a panel</a> with Ogles, was reported to have embellished aspects of her background. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doj-will-not-charge-matt-gaetz-sex-trafficking-probe-2023-2">unlikely to face criminal charges</a> from the Department of Justice following a years-long sex-trafficking investigation, while Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia is no stranger to controversies based on her frequent conspiratorial pronouncements.In <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-congress-house-republicans-uneasy-reckoning-george-santos-lies-mccarthy-2023-1">contrast to some of his other colleagues</a>, Ogles has also taken a largely non-judgemental view of serial fabulist Santos. During the speaker vote, he was frequently seen chatting with the scandal-plagued congressman on the House floor."As far as the questions surrounding him, you know, I don't have the particulars, and it's not my place or business to judge," Ogles <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-congress-house-republicans-uneasy-reckoning-george-santos-lies-mccarthy-2023-1">told Insider in January</a>. The police interaction with Brooks was initially peaceful. That changed when Brooks did not pass a breathalyzer test and police attempted to arrest him. Body camera footage showed Brooks resisted arrest, punching Officer Brosnan — he suffered a concussion — grabbing his taser, attempting to flee the scene, and firing the less-lethal weapon back in Rolfe's direction. Rolfe opened fire, shooting Brooks twice in the back.The killing, coming just after the murder of George Floyd, sparked protests, with arsonists burning down the Wendy's where the shooting occurred.
