India's fourth-largest drug maker Cipla expects its respiratory drug sales to more than double by 2020. 
 
The company aims to achieve this with Seroflo, a version of GSK’s Advair inhaler. 
 
It had launched the product in seven countries so far, and had planned to launch it first in the UK which is touted as the biggest market in the EU for asthma drugs. 
 
Cipla CEO Subhanu Saxena said the company had not changed its sales forecast for Seroflo. 
 
"It would have been nice to be first, obviously. But we are still pretty much in line with our own timelines," Saxena told Reuters in an interview at Cipla's headquarters. 
 
Saxena said the company plans to enter Latin America and Eastern Europe next. "I don't want any market to have more than 20-30 percent exposure for Cipla," he said.

Cipla aims to double sales
of respiratory drugs by 2020

Leading pharmaceutical company <keyword id="6357157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cipla">Cipla</keyword> on Wednesday announced it has signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement with US-based Gilead Sciences for the manufacturing and distribution of antiviral drug remdesivir. Cipla is the second firm after Noida-based Jubilant Life Sciences whose subsidiary Jubilant Generics Ltdhas inked a pact with Gilead Sciences on Tuesday to manufacture and sell remdesivir, which is under clinical trials globally as a potential treatment of COVID-19 disease. As part of the agreement, Cipla will be permitted to manufacture the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and finished product, and market it in 127 countries including India and South Africa under Cipla's own brand name. "At Cipla, it is our continuous endeavour to ensure that no patient is denied access to life-saving treatments. Our partnership with Gilead represents this unwavering commitment and is a significant step towards saving millions of lives impacted by the pandemic," said Umang Vohra (MD and Global CEO, Cipla Limited). Cipla will receive the manufacturing know-how from Gilead Sciences to manufacture the drug at a commercial scale. The emergency use authorization (EUA) by the US FDA will facilitate broader use of remdesivir to treat hospitalized patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19. The EUA is based on available data from two global clinical trials - US National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases' placebo-controlled Phase 3 study in patients with moderate to severe symptoms of COVID-19, and Gilead's global Phase 3 study evaluating remdesivir in patients with severe disease. Multiple additional clinical trials are ongoing to generate more data on the safety and efficacy of remdesivir as a potential treatment for COVID-19. Remdesivir continues to be an investigational drug that has not been approved by the FDA. "As the world is faced with the COVID-19 crisis, it is imperative that we collaborate and fight this virus together. We are pleased to partner with Gilead for this cause and take this treatment to patients across countries after the required regulatory approvals," said Vohra. The Health Ministry recently said that it is examining remdesivir, which was used during the Ebola outbreak, as one protocol in the treatment for Covid-19. Cipla signs licensing agreement with Gilead to manufacture and sell antiviral drug remdesivir

Drug maker <keyword id="6357157" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla">Cipla</keyword> Ltd’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Cipla EU, which is based out of UK, has entered into a joint venture with its existing Morocco based trade partners, Societe Marocaine De Cooperation Pharmaceutique (<keyword id="2719589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cooper-Pharma">Cooper Pharma</keyword>) and The Pharmaceutical Institute (<keyword id="820613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Phi">PHI</keyword>). The company through the partnership is expected to focus on marketing respiratory and neurology products in Morocco’s market. 
	 
	“Morocco is an attractive pharmaceutical market in the African continent. This JV is aimed to strengthen Cipla’s presence in Morocco, which is in-line with our global growth strategy to build front-end presence in key markets. Cipla has enjoyed a long-standing business relationship with Cooper Pharma and PHI for over a decade and this JV will further strengthen Cipla’s relationship,” said Subhanu Saxena, managing director and global CEO of Cipla Limited. 
	 
	It is worth noting that the tie-up will facilitate Cipla to gain a direct share of the pharmaceutical market in Morocco by leveraging the commercial strengths of its partners. The company also plans to set up a manufacturing unit in the country. 
	 
	“As per the agreement, Cipla (EU) Limited will hold 60% stake in the JV, while Cooper Pharma and PHI shall together hold 40% stake. Cipla (EU) Limited’s expected investment in cash in the JV is 
	estimated at up to USD 15 million,” added Saxena. 
	 
	It should be noted that the proposed joint venture is subjected to regulatory approvals.

Indian pharma major <keyword id="6357157" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla">Cipla</keyword> has won a R2 billion (South African currency, ZAR) contract from the South African government’s National ARV tender. The company was awarded the contract through its South African subsidiary, <keyword id="415177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla-Medpro">Cipla Medpro</keyword>. The contract will be effective from the April 1, 2015 for a period of three years. 
	 This would be the third such contract that has been awarded to Cipla Medpro this year by . Cipla is known as a pioneer of fixed dose combinations following Cipla’s Dr Yusuf Hamied’s accomplishment of making <keyword id="19472" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aids">Aids</keyword> medication available or a dollar a day in 2001,” said Paul Miller, CEO of Cipla Medpro. The contract is for producing medicines to fight <keyword id="6363554" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HIV">HIV</keyword> and AIDS. 
	 
	“We intend to continue this proud tradition and build on the foundation laid to continue our quest of providing affordable healthcare to all,” added Miller. 
	 
	The company will produce the drug at its Cipla Medpro Manufacturing (CMM), which is based in Kwazulu-Natal. Currently, the company is into producing fixed dose combinations (FDCs) drugs. 
	 
	“We are extremely proud to have won this tender which is not only testament to our high quality product portfolio, but is also in line with Cipla’s ethos of advancing healthcare for all South Africans. Indian Pharma Major Cipla Wins R2 Billion Contract In South Africa

New Delhi, Apr 2 () Pharma major Cipla on Thursday announced the successful completion of Phase-3 clinical study for generic fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder indicated for treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.The study results demonstrate that Cipla's fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder 100/50 mcg is therapeutically equivalent to Advair Diskus 100/50 mcg, Cipla said in a statement.The Phase-3 study, which successfully completed in the first attempt, was conducted over a period of 15 months at over 100 sites in the US enrolling 1,400 asthma patients, it added."This is an important milestone and is a testament to Cipla's strong respiratory capabilities and will go a long way in strengthening our respiratory franchise in the US," Cipla MD and Global CEO Umang Vohra said.Unmatched presence across the care continuum and the widest range of drug-device combinations has established Cipla's position as a lung leader in India and other key emerging markets, he added."Our endeavour is to extend this expertise across developed markets through niche product development," Vohra said.According to IQVIA, Advair Diskus and its generic equivalents registered a total US sales of approximately USD 2.9 billion for the 12-month period ending February 2020, Cipla said.The product is indicated to treat asthma in patients of 4 years and older as a twice-daily prescription medicine and in long-term to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both, for better breathing and fewer flare-ups, it added. Cipla completes successful phase-3 clinical study of generic asthma drug

Indian pharma major <keyword id="6357157" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla">Cipla</keyword> Ltd along with Meda Pharmaceuticals Inc, a subsidiary of Swedish specialty drug maker <keyword id="1692461" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meda-AB">Meda AB</keyword>, has filed a lawsuit against Canadian pharma company <keyword id="156835" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apotex-Inc">Apotex Inc</keyword> and Apotex Corp to protect its <keyword id="2623956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dymista">Dymista</keyword> patents in the Federal District Court in Delaware. 
	 
	The companies have sued Apotex following the drug maker’s (Apotex) application to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in which they had sought approval to sell a generic version of Meda’s Dymista in the market, even before the expiration of the patents. 
	 
	“The Complaint was filed within 45 days of receiving Apotex’s Paragraph IV certification notice, thus triggering an automatic stay preventing the FDA from approving Apotex’s ANDA for 30 months from receipt of the notice, unless ordered otherwise by a district court,” said Cipla in a letter dated December 3, 2014, to the NSE. 
	 
	It should be noted that Meda has the right over Dymista patents till 2026 and also possesses the New Drug Application (NDA) to produce and market the drug in the US market. 
	 
	"Meda will vigorously enforce the Dymista patent rights against Apotex and any other company who challenges these patents", stated Dr Jorg Thomas Dierks, CEO of Meda Pharmaceuticals. 
	 
	Cipla and Meda Pharmaceuticals had entered into partnership to manufacture the Dymista while Meda had exclusive rights to market it in other countries. Later, Cipla too acquired the right to sell drugs in a few countries.
