With the government opening up the space sector for private investments, Chennai-based rocket making start-up <keyword id="7122982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnikul-cosmos">Agnikul Cosmos</keyword> Private Ltd is expecting to have its rocket ready by 2022, said a top company official. "We have realised the engine for the upper stage or third stage and work is on for the first and second stage engines of the rocket. We hope to have the engines in seven months' time. Depending on how the Covid-19 lockdown progresses, we expect the rocket to be ready by later part of 2022," Co-founder and CEO Srinath Ravichandran told IANS. Agnikul, he said, is developing a three-stage (three engine) rocket, powered by kerosene or semi-cryogenic fuel with a carrying capacity of 100 kg to low earth orbit. The rocket height will be 18 metres and it would weigh about 13 ton at liftoff. According to Ravichandran, the company will buy commercially-available navigation systems and modify them to its needs. The company, which has 50 employees, is currently working out of the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development located at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. Ravichandran said that Agnikul has raised about Rs 26 crore till date from various investors and the promoters have also put in their own funds. Agreeing that the money in rocket launch services is very low compared to that in satellite application service and ground equipment, Ravichandran said: "The estimated market for small satellite launches is about $ 2-2.5 million per year. This market will grow when there are rockets available for putting into orbit small satellites." Presently, small satellites are carried as piggyback luggage by bigger rockets. Thus, the waiting time for small satellite makers to put their satellites into orbit is very long. "But if there are rockets available to launch small satellites, then the market for such satellites and also for small rockets will increase," Ravichandran said. While small rocket players may face competition from agencies having bigger rockets in terms of pricing, Ravichandran said the satellite players will have to look at the opportunity cost of waiting for the space in a bigger rocket whereas it may be not be so with players like Agnikul. Currently the US-based Rocket Lab is the only player in the segment that Agnikul is targeting. "By 2022, more number of such small rockets are expected to come into the satellite launch vehicle market," Ravichandran said. As regards the rocket ports, Agnikul will be looking at using the existing rocket port at Sriharikota belonging to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) or the one that is coming up at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu. Happy at the Indian government's decision to open up the space sector for private players Ravichandran said the proposed Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) should have technical experts so that valid proposals are taken forward as well as marketing people who understand business. According to the Indian government, IN-SPACe will provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure.

Over the next two days, these rains will remain light, according to <a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/pages/city_weather_show.php">the India Meteorological Department. </a>This year, Chennai’s rainfall deficit was around 45%, which has started shrinking.

 For the last six months, the 5 million city residents have been facing drought as monsoons played truant. Normally, Chennai would receive 140 mm of annual rainfall but this year the whole state recorded a deficit of 28% since June 1. The monsoon, that is supposed to begin from June 1, and was later like it was across the country. Four years back, the city was flooded due to cyclones in the Bay of Bengal. As many as 500 died and 1.8 million people had to move. In 2019, however the city had the problem which is just the opposite.  The Price of Water As the city’s reservoirs dried up, water became an expensive commodity. So much so, that its more expensive than petrol. Residents are reportedly paying ₹80-100 for a 20 litre drinking water can, nearly ₹4 more than the price of petrol. Those few who could afford, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/chennai-news/chennai-water-crisis-from-rs-2-000-to-rs-4-500-the-price-chennai-residents-pay-for-water-2067372">even paid</a> ₹75,000 for a month, to get a water tanker right to their homes. The local authorities are bringing water into the city via <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-first-special-train-carrying-more-than-2-million-litre-of-water-reaches-chennai/articleshow/70192058.cms">a special train, and distributing it.</a> Chennai Metro Water also started providing water at ₹700 for every 9000 litres. However, to avail of this, many of them wait for as long as three to four weeks to receive the supply. Ultimately, they would have no choice but to pay up or remain thirsty.

If everything goes as planned, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=motorola">Motorola</a> may start <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manufacturing+hub">manufacturing in India</a> from Chennai factory, which is lying unused since 2013. Chennai will be the third manufacturing location for <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> outside China and Brazil. 
 
Motorola, which sells phones in India through Flipkart only, is also eyeing orders from Mukesh Ambani’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jio+Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</a> for 4G phones and is expecting a larger play through its 'E', 'G' and 'X' range of devices. 
 Marcus Frost, senior marketing director for Motorola Mobility's Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions, told Times of India that they have started evaluating whether <keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">make in India</keyword> would be sensible. 
 
"India is one of the biggest markets for Motorola globally, and also among the fastest-growing. We are aware of the government's '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=make+in+india">Make in India</a>' initiative as well as the benefits that local manufacturing gives against imports. Going through the Chennai factory, or through a contract-manufacturing route, is something that is part of the evaluation,” he told the news daily. 
 Reportedly, <keyword id="2974233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="manufacturing-in-India">manufacturing in India</keyword> now is cheaper by 11%, owing to incentives for local manufacturing offered by the government. 
 
This move by the government has attracted Sony and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=xiaomi">Xiaomi</a>. Taiwan’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Foxconn">Foxconn</a> is in the process of setting up factories in India. 
 
Motorola had suspended manufacturing at its Chennai factory around 2013 as part of global production re-alignments after it was acquired by Google. 
 
Motorola sold over three million units in the country till last year and has now launched third-generation of Moto G at Rs 11,999 (8GB) and Rs 12,999 (16GB).

OYO Workspaces forays into Chennai with Innov8, Workflo

New Delhi, Nov 20 () German luxury carmaker BMW on Wednesday said it has upgraded its entire petrol vehicle range in India to conform to BS VI emission regulations.
 The automaker said it is now working to upgrade its diesel range to conform to stricter emission norms which kick in the country from April, 1 next year.
 The petrol portfolio is already BS VI compliant while, the diesel portfolio will be converted ahead of stipulated timelines, BMW India said in a statement.
 The company's Chennai-based plant has started local production of BS VI diesel variants of the 5 Series and 6 Series Gran Turismo and is also gearing up to roll out new X1, it added.
 "The complete petrol portfolio is already BS VI compliant while the diesel portfolio will be converted ahead of stipulated timelines. BMW Group Plant Chennai has started local production of BS VI diesel variants of the BMW 5 and the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo," BMW India said in a statement.
 The production of BS VI version of the BMW X1 will also begin soon, it added.
 "Early start of BS VI production is a strategic call we are taking to meet the unprecedented demand for our new products," BMW Group India President and Chief Executive Officer Rudratej Singh said.
 Beginning next year, the company will increase prices of BS VI models by up to 6 per cent, he added. MSS SHW

 Titled ‘Make more in India,’ <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword> which had acquired <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword> Mobility last year, launched the 40,000 sq. feet manufacturing facility located in Sriperambudur, Chennai. This plant is set to roll out two successful models of 4G smartphones- The Moto E and the Lenovo K3 Note. 
 
Talking about what triggered the idea of local manufacturing of smartphones, Chen Xudong, President MBG group, Lenovo and Chairman, Motorola Mobility Operating Board, said, “According to IDC, India is the third largest smartphone market in the world, and we are excited to expand our presence in the country at a time like this. Lenovo’s investment in the new manufacturing plant represents the potential we see in the Indian market and we hope to tap into the country’s competent talent pool to develop cutting-edge products for our customers.” 
 
 
 The <keyword id="134346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chennai-plant">Chennai plant</keyword> has already started rolling out <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Cheapest-MOTO-E-Is-Not-Bad-At-All-Review/articleshow/36288300.cms">Moto E</a> phones, while the K3 note is set to follow soon. Amar Babu, COO Lenovo, Asia Pacific and Chairman, Lenovo India claimed that the first batch of shipment has infact reached their sales partners. 
 
The plant, for which Lenovo has entered into a contract agreement with one of its global partner, Flextronics, will employ 1500 employees’ for manufacturing lines, quality assurance, product testing etc. These employees also have the task of helping the company generate 6 million units for the Indian market in this financial year. 
 
The Chennai plant also holds the distinction of being the only plant outside India to manufacture products of both brands. 
 
Sudhin Mathur, Director of Smart Phone Business mentioned that their Chennai plant could not be termed as just an assembly unit as it was 'somewhere in the middle'. 
 
Additionally, the company also has plans to locally source 30% of the components required in the manufacturing process and are optimistic that it will be ‘a matter of months’ before they achieve that target with the support of its partner. “We are also in talks with the government to improve availability of components locally to heighten the total value of devices.” 
 
Elaborating on the company’s future plans, Amar Babu said that the company looks forward to generating 12-14 million units from the Chennai plant, next year and the focus at the moment is on stabilizing the process of ramping up. “We haven’t launched SmartTV in India, but launching the smartwatch is a possibility in the near future,” he added. 
 
Incidentally, this is not Lenovo’s first foray into manufacturing in India. The company boasts of a PC- manufacturing plant in Pondichery since 2005 and is looking to set in stone their integration with Motorola through this plant. 
 
“Lenovo and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Motorolas-Second-Innings-In-India-Will-It-Work/articleshow/28338123.cms">Motorola</a> will have separate manufacturing lines at the facility but it should not be forgotten that they both belong to one company.” Amar Babu explicitly stated. 
 
Lenovo also said that they have grown 330 percent in India from last year, according to IDC estimates and stated that they plan to make future investments in the country. 
 
The event was also attended by Ajay Kumar, Additional Secretary, Department of IT and Electronics and Debjani Ghosh, President of Manufactures Association for Information Technology (MAIT).

It is now a requirement - because IT's skill requirements are changing with the way digitisation is spreading. And the talent that resides beyond the metros is attractive now. The second consideration is costcompetitiveness," Premkumar S, executive vice-chairman and MD of HCL Infosystems told The Economic Times. 
 
However, the constraints lie in public infrastructure such as roads and airport connectivity as the IT business is strongly client-oriented. TCS' rival Cognizant has committed to developing delivery centres in Coimbatore, besides making progress in expansions in Chennai. R Chandrasekaran, executive vice-chairman at Cognizant told the ET, there were cost considerations too about going deeper into Tamil Nadu. "It is cheaper to deliver for a tier II city but that is possible in Tamil Nadu because the education infrastructure in say Trichy, or Coimbatore is comparable to that of Chennai."
