Although some startups, like fintech platform <keyword id="6557529" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kreditbee" source="Orion">KreditBee</keyword> ($200 million), Foodtech platform HealthKart ($135 million) and HRtech software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform BetterPlace ($40 million), raised decent funds in December last year and in the beginning of January, the scene overall is grim as VC money has squeezed. According to a PwC India report, startup funding in India hit a two-year low at $2.7 billion in the third quarter of 2022. In 2022, the significant drop in funding was attributed to a decline in late-stage investments, which fell by 45 per cent from $29.3 billion in January-November 2021 to $16.1 billion for the same period this year, according to data provided by <keyword id="2779670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tracxn" source="Orion">Tracxn</keyword>, a leading global market intelligence platform. Seed stage rounds also experienced a contraction and dropped by 38 per cent as compared to the previous year. The report said that 22 startups entered the unicorn club in 2022, as compared to 46 in the previous year.The number of big ticket ($100 million and above) funding rounds dropped by 35 per cent to 55 as compared to 85 in the reported period. The number of funding rounds saw a drop of 30 per cent, from 2,647 last year to 1,841 this year, the report said. "The funding winter, which began in Q4 of 2021, will persist in 2023 as well. In order to survive the drought, startups are taking unit economics more seriously, which has been illustrated through the series of mass layoffs that have occurred this year," said <keyword id="520013" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neha-singh" source="Orion">Neha Singh</keyword>, Co-Founder, Tracxn. "Although we are currently experiencing a slump, the situation is prompting startups to establish clearer and more sustainable paths to growth, as investors' evaluation metrics begin to emphasise good profitability over growth at all costs," Singh had said in a statement. Geo-political issues, Global supply chain crisis and other macro issues are expected to prevail," he said. However, this also needs to be seen as a year where resilient, innovative and problem-solving entrepreneurs shall get an opportunity to stand out from the crowd. "As the macro environment gets tougher, we can expect some excellent business models to outshine the rest with high levels of innovation and frugality. Under the OFS, Asha Narendra Goliya will offload 25 lakh equity shares, Narendra Rishabh Goliya (HUF) will sell 5.17 lakh shares, Rishabh Narendra Goliya will dispose of 4 lakh shares and SACEF Holdings II will sell 60 lakh equity shares in the company. Going by the draft papers, the firm may explore a pre-IPO placement aggregating to Rs 15 crore. If such a placement is undertaken, the size of the fresh issue will be reduced. Proceeds from the issue worth Rs 59.50 crore will be utilised towards financing the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Nashik and for general corporate purposes. After the e-auction was over, Hinduja presented a revised resolution plan with an NPV of Rs 9,000 crore and it has offered 100% cash upfront for the entire Rs 9,000 crore. On the other hand, Torrent has offered only Rs 3,750 crore as upfront cash, which is 54% lower than the Hinduja offer. The balance Rs 4,890 crore will be paid by Torrent in five years. According to the sources, CoC is in favour of Hinduja's offer as the lenders will be able to recover the entire money upfront. The COC may even ask Torrent to match Hinduja's offer of Rs 9, 000 Cr, before engaging again with both bidders to increase the value further. The NCLT deadline of March 31, 2023 for the completion of RCAP resolution is unlikely to be met. The resolution has already been delayed by over a year. Sensex, Nifty50 plummet on selling pressure across all sectors ahead of FOMC minutes

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.69 against the dollar, registering a rise of 9 paise over its previous close. On Monday, the rupee declined 17 paise to close at 82.78 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.03 per cent to 103.55. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.30 per cent to USD 85.65 per barrel. "India December Manufacturing PMI came in at 57.8 against 55.7 in November. This shows that economy is still resilient as has also been evident from other high frequency indicators such as car sales and core sector data," IFA Global Research Academy said in a research note. The rupee is likely to trade in a 82.55-82.85 range with sideways price action, it added. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 24.82 points or 0.04 per cent lower at 61,142.97. Rupee gains 9 paise to 82.69 against US dollar

Forex traders said the support from firm domestic equities and weak American currency was negated by the gains in crude oil prices and sustained foreign fund outflows. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 82.66 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 82.56 and a low of 82.78. It finally settled at 82.75, down 14 paise over its previous close. On the last trading day of 2022, the rupee had settled at 82.61. "The Indian rupee started the first trading day of the new year with a small loss as many markets remained closed on account of the New year Holiday. "The rupee was unable to hold the morning gains in absence of inflows. The thin trading volumes, stronger domestic equities and better-than-expected PMI readings were falling short to support the rupee," said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. The near-term focus will remain on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes, scheduled to be released on Wednesday. "Spot USD-INR is still stuck in a three-week range of 82.50 to 82.95. We believe the said range could be resolved by the weekend as liquidity returns with traders coming back to their desks after the New Year holiday," Parmar added. The <keyword id="75201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dollar-index" source="Orion">dollar index</keyword>, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.30 per cent lower at 103.52. a rally. France’s CAC index surged 1.17%, while Germany’s DAX gained 1.39%. Asian markets, however, were mixed, with some markets still closed due to holidays. While the Hang Seng index gained 1.82%, Nikkei 225 was flat and the Shanghai Composite index gained 0.88%. The Taiwan Weighted index was up 0.61%, while South Korea’s KOSPI declined 0.31%. Meanwhile, investors are awaiting the minutes from the US Federal Reserve meeting scheduled on Wednesday. On the global front, Russia’s defence ministry has said that 63 Russian soldiers have been killed in a Ukrainian New Year’s Eve attack in the Russian controlled part of Donetsk province. Among individual stocks, The food delivery platform Zomato slipped 5% during the day and ended with over 2% fall as its chief technology officer Gunjan Patidar has tendered resignation. Patidar was among the first few employees of Zomato and built core tech systems for the company, the company said.
