<ul><li>Business Insider India spoke to camera experts from <keyword id="215177" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vivo" source="Orion">Vivo</keyword> and <keyword id="1690243" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zeiss" source="Orion">Zeiss</keyword> to break down what goes behind these collaborations.</li><li>Their latest offering with the X90-series brings a 1-inch sensor to mobile phones, taking photography a notch higher.</li><li>Find out how far the Vivo-Zeiss collaboration has come and what to expect in the future.</li></ul>Vivo recently launched its flagship series of smartphones in India - the X90 and the X90 Pro. It's the company's first big launch of 2023, and like its predecessors, the X90 series bets big on cameras as it returns with Zeiss-powered optics for the fourth time, with a 1-inch sensor this time.<br /><br />Vivo and Zeiss have worked together on smartphone cameras since 2020; hence the expectations from the X90 Pro are sky-high, as four years of research and development (R&amp;D) on a smartphone camera is rare. To recall, Carl Zeiss is the same optics giant that powered the first generation of stunning phone cameras on the Nokia N-series in 2005. <br /><br />According to Zeiss, both companies have partnered on R&amp;D not just for one component or software feature but to establish the entire imaging and artistic experience. To understand it better, Business Insider India spoke to Oliver Schindelbeck, senior smartphone technology manager at Zeiss Consumer Products, and Keshav Chugh, product manager, Camera R&amp;D, Vivo India.<br /><br />Schindelbeck has been part of the Nokia-Zeiss collaboration and has been developing phone cameras for nearly two decades.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The first Vivo x Zeiss camera was born during the peak of pandemic" comment="subhead" text="The first Vivo x Zeiss camera was born during the peak of pandemic"><span data-til="noop">The first Vivo x Zeiss camera was born during the peak of pandemic</span></cmsannotation><br />Vivo and Zeiss have collaborated four times on X60, X70 and X80-series of phones and now, on the X90. Schindelbeck told Business Insider India that the Vivo-Zeiss collaboration was born during the pandemic's peak.<br /><br />    <div type="image" title="IMG_9430" msid="100013723" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Vivo X90 Pro&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />He said, “We started this collaboration with X60, and naturally, as with a new collaboration, we needed to learn about each other and get started. So we set up a basic development process for how to work together. And if you see, it's almost three years ago, exactly when this Covid hit. We had to set up everything online. So our very first personal meeting with Vivo guys from China was last autumn. Everything was organised by video calls, email, and all that electronic communication you can think of.”<br /><br />Schindelbeck added that as they moved to the next generation of devices, the development process was modified per the learnings. With the X90 series, they are having a holistic look at the imaging chain, capturing and displaying the image.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="More than just a marketing exercise" comment="subhead" text="More than just a marketing exercise"><span data-til="noop">More than just a marketing exercise</span></cmsannotation><br />Schindelbeck told us that a standard must be met to get approved for the Zeiss branding. So the Vivo and Zeiss teams work not just on a device but also on future technologies. There are two streams in the process – the first is the actual development of devices, where both develop the optics for the camera system and software certification. The other is R&amp;D for technology that is not related to a specific device but instead has a long-term objective of developing technology for the next five to ten years or even longer.<br /><br />“Yeah, so what I can easily say is it's not just branding, I would say it is just a cream on the cake,” said Schindelbeck.<br /><br />He added, “In research, you think you have a beautiful idea that could be a revolutionary technology. And after a few years of time, work, and effort, you find out it doesn't work with the smartphone. It's frustrating but also naturally very interesting because that is groundbreaking, but that is something where you need patience.”<br /><br />Adding to that, Keshav Chugh, product manager, Camera R&amp;D, Vivo India, said, “...Most of their collaboration (of other brands) is just software. Our collaboration with Zeiss is both hardware and software. They are helping us with lenses and the T-star coating, which actually makes a physical difference in how the sensor is seeing the light. Zeiss is a 100-year-old-plus company, so we have certain standards to meet to use their brand name, which is not easy.”<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Here’s what goes behind making the camera system" comment="subhead" text="Here’s what goes behind making the camera system"><span data-til="noop">Here’s what goes behind making the camera system</span></cmsannotation><br />Schindelbeck said the companies had defined a clear development process, starting with the specifications and requirements, even discussing what goes into the next-gen devices.<br /><br />He told us that the two teams decide on the image quality parameters like what they want to deliver to the customer. They then identify and create a specification for the optical system to achieve those results. It includes the size of the module, what sensor to use, and which lenses will fit the best. The device is measured and evaluated in theory and once the optical system is defined, the Zeiss team uses simulation tools to test the design by thread-and-core performance and also things like how the flares would look like in the build system. <br /><br />Based on the simulation, the Zeiss team decides if the performance of the coatings is fine or if it requires any changes to achieve the required level of quality. Once done, the hardware prototypes of the camera modules are made. Then a final level of testing is done in Zeiss’ lab in Germany and then in China.<br /><br />The biggest challenge in all of this, as per Schindelbeck, is this – since the development time is extremely short, they need to have a tight process for measurements, shipment of prototypes, and testing in Germany so that there are no complications after they are shipped to China. “ All this while keeping this process as lean and fast as possible.”<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software simplifies photography for budding phone photographers" comment="subhead" text="Software simplifies photography for budding phone photographers"><span data-til="noop">Software simplifies photography for budding phone photographers</span></cmsannotation><br />Chugh told us that the new mode for portraits, called the Zeiss Cineflair, is a smart filter that emulates the legendary Hollywood Zeiss Cine lenses and produces camera flares in portraits. The filter adjusts the layer's type and size based on the background and light source. Additionally, the device's bigger sensor and V2 Chip, combined with improved night and HDR algorithms, have significantly enhanced night videos, photos, and portraits. The software features enable the creation of handheld Astro mode content without needing a tripod. <br /><br />Schindelbeck emphasised the importance of simplicity of usage. Although traditional cameras offer several features, they require complicated equipment such as a tripod. The software features aim to provide snapshooters with a simple solution and beautiful results.<br />

The Vivo-Zeiss story: How a Covid-time collab led to the creation of the X90 series

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A rare Ziess lens designed for <keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword>'s Apollo moon missions will go up for <keyword id="1639" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Auction">auction</keyword> in Vienna.</li><li>Germany lens maker Ziess produced 10 of the Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7 <keyword id="86373" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lenses">lenses</keyword>, selling most to NASA.</li><li>The lens is expected to sell for between €100,000 and €120,000 in next weekend's auction. </li></ul><p>When one of the rarest photo lenses in the world goes up for auction next weekend in Vienna, Austria, it's expected to fetch between €100,000 and €120,000.</p><p>The lens, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Zeiss_Planar_50mm_f/0.7">a Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7</a>, was designed by the German lens-maker in 1966 for NASA. The agency needed a lens capable of capturing light in the darkest circumstances, perfect for pictures of the moon during its Apollo Missions. Only 10 of the lenses were manufactured. NASA bought six of them. </p><p>"This is one of these ten lenses that Zeiss made at that time," said Andreas Schweiger, of <a href="https://www.leitz-auction.com/auction/en/home">Leitz Photographica Auction</a>, which is running the auction. "Most probably, this is one of the lenses delivered to NASA."</p><p>Schweiger spoke to Insider last week via Zoom from his office in Vienna, where his team's readying for a live auction at the city's Hotel Bristol, scheduled for June 12.</p><p>For the last few weeks, boxes containing historic and rare camera equipment have been arriving at the auction company's doorstep. Most came from private collectors. </p><p>"They get their camera as a gift from their grandparents, for example, or they find maybe a camera in the attic," Schweiger said. "When they don't know what to do, they look up on the internet and hopefully they find us."</p><div type="image" title="Rolleiflex Cameras owned by US Photographer Walker Evans" height="500" width="750" msid="83285828" hostid="261"></div><p>Among the rarities that will go on the auction block are a "Luxus" model gold-plated <keyword id="117871" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Leica">Leica</keyword> that's wrapped in lizard skin (starting bid €100,000), a Leica MP2 with Electric Motor (starting bid €150,000), and a 1924 Leica owned by Ernst Leitz II, who manufactured the first Leica <keyword id="46505" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cameras">cameras</keyword> (starting bid €40,000).</p><p>There will be a trio of Rolleiflex cameras owned by American photographer <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/evan/hd_evan.htm">Walker Evans</a> (starting bid €20,000), and a pair of Leicas (starting bid €6,000) owned by <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703630404575053560195655890">Felice Quinto</a>, an early Italian paporazzo.</p><h2>A Jony Ive Leica Prototype</h2><p>There will, however, be one missing item.</p><p>A prototype of a Leica camera designed by Apple's Jony Ive and British designer Marc Newson was expected to be among the most-watched items on sale. The camera was on the auction catalog's cover. It was one of a kind.</p><div type="image" title="Leica Jony Ive Prototype Austria Auction" height="1280" width="1920" msid="83285832" hostid="261"></div><p>Schweiger said the seller decided at the last minute to pull the camera. It would have had a starting bid of €150,000, with a final sale expected from €200,000 to €250,000. </p><p>It was a test model for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jony-ive-leica-camera-for-charity-2013-10">only completed Leica camera</a> by the designers, which went up for sale in a 2013 charity auction. It sold for $1.8 million. </p><p>Schweiger wouldn't say more about the prototype's owner, or why the item had been pulled from the sale. Michal Kosakowski, Leitz Photographica Auction's product specialist, who was also on the Zoom call, said that the owner was in the US. </p><h2>Ahead of the auction</h2><p>Most of the difficult work of putting together the catalog and auction was done by the time Schweiger and Kosakowski spoke with Insider.</p><p>They'd unpacked all the boxes. Kosakowski's team had checked that the cameras and lenses were mostly in working order. Sometimes they'd run a roll of film through the camera, but most of their work was done using machines. Then they'd photographed each item for their website.</p><p>The rare Zeiss lens was designed by a team led by Dr. Erhard Glatzel, who would later be given the Apollo Achievement Award, said Silke Schmid, head of the Zeiss Museum of Optics in Germany. </p><div type="image" title="Zeiss Planar 0.7/50 on a Nikon Camera Body." height="500" width="750" msid="83285835" hostid="261"></div><p>"In the 1960s, he was one of the leading scientists and managers in the lens design department at Zeiss in Oberkochen, Germany," Schmid told Insider last week. "His creations were world-renowned, including the Zeiss Hologon and the Zeiss Planar 0.7/50."</p><p>The lenses were so effective at gathering light that NASA had planned to use them to photograph the far side of the moon. (Insider reached out to NASA for confirmation.) Of the 10 produced, three went to director Stanley Kubrick, who needed them <a href="https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/5059-kubrick-s-candle-tricks-in-barry-lyndon">to shoot candlelit scenes</a> for "Barry Lyndon," Schmid said. </p><p>"Kubrick located three 50mm f/0.7 Ziess still-camera lenses, which were left over from a batch made for NASA," said cinematographer John Alcott, who worked with Kubrick, according to "The Stanley Kubrick Archives."</p><p>That marked "the first time in film history that it was possible to shoot without using artificial light," Schmid said. </p><p>Schweiger said he was eager to watch the bidding begin. As the auctioneers spoke to Insider, some of the early online bidding ahead of the live auction had already begun. The Zeiss Planar had two bids, raising the price to €55,000, but that was still only half its expected selling price. </p><p>"So we see bids coming in and so on, and we get a little bit of the feeling how the lots are treated, how interesting are the lots for our customers," Schweiger said. "So, it's both stressful and exciting."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Apple&#xa0;has partnered with German lens and optics manufacturer Carl Zeiss AG on a new pair of augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, according to technology blogger Robert Scoble.</p><p>Scoble <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble/posts/10154881786139655" target="_blank">wrote on his Facebook page</a> that an employee from Carl Zeiss AG confirmed rumours that Apple and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Carl-Zeiss-AG/105774426122706" data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/page.php?id=105774426122706" data-hovercard-prefer-more-content-show="1">Carl Zeiss AG</a> are working on "a light pair of augmented reality/mixed reality glasses".</p><p>The conversation occurred during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week, Scoble said. It specifically took place at the Zeiss stand in the AR section of CES, according to Scoble.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"Carl Zeiss is in the AR part of CES," wrote Scoble on Facebook. "But it is NOT showing off its mixed reality optics. Why not? I said 'Tim Cook didn't let you' and the employees around me smiled nervously."</p><p>The glasses could be announced by Apple as early as this year, according to Scoble, who wrote that he previously expected Apple to announce them in 2018.</p><p>Unlike Google and Snapchat, Apple is yet to release any form of computerised glasses.</p><p>If Scoble is right and Apple is planning to release a pair of glasses, it's unclear how they would be positioned versus competitor products or what they would be priced at. The device has already been leaked, and we know what it could look like. The device is expected to feature a large circular camera module at the back and an alert slider.<br /><br />The company is expected to ditch the “Pro” moniker for its upcoming flagship series. The OnePlus 11 is expected to be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, coupled with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The battery is also expected to improve greatly, and the OnePlus is expected to offer a 5,000mAh battery with 100W fast charging support.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Xiaomi 13 series" comment="subhead" text="Xiaomi 13 series"><span data-til="noop">Xiaomi 13 series</span></cmsannotation><br />Xiaomi is expected to introduce soon its Xiaomi 13 series, consisting of the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi 13 Ultra smartphones in its home country China in the coming weeks. In 2023, the devices will make their way to India, either at once or separately.<br /><br />The Xiaomi 13 Ultra was recently <a href="https://twitter.com/stufflistings/status/1599024501572128769">spotted</a> on BIS, hinting that the Indian launch is imminent. The device is expected to have premium features such as a 2K E6 AMOLED display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and 120W fast charging. This helps the phone preserve battery life based on what you’re doing.<br /><br />Overall, the Vivo X80 Pro display is amongst the best I have seen on smartphones. It is bright enough to be easily readable under direct sunlight, the colour reproduction is accurate and the high refresh rate is consistent most of the time.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Blazing fast performance" comment="subhead" text="Blazing fast performance"><span data-til="noop">Blazing fast performance</span></cmsannotation><br />The Vivo X80 Pro is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, paired with 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage. Vivo also has an option to expand the memory by 4GB temporarily using the internal storage, but I never noticed any slowdowns despite multitasking and gaming a lot.<br /><br />Speaking of multitasking, the X80 Pro handles it with ease. I also gamed quite a lot on the phone, playing several graphics intensive games like Apex Legends Mobile, Asphalt 9: Legends, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Battlegrounds Mobile India.<br /><br />The phone handled everything I threw at it without breaking a sweat. It managed to run all the games at max settings with no stutters. The phone also did not get hot despite extended gaming sessions.<br /><br />One feature that deserves a call out is the game interpolation feature which can be enabled manually to allow you to run Call of Duty: Mobile at 90Hz. This is something that not every phone is capable of, and the X80 Pro didn’t flinch a bit.<br /><br />Powering the phone is a 4,700mAh battery, which lasted me a day with 15-20% juice still left, on average. The X80 Pro supports 80W fast charging and comes with the charger in the box. It can charge the phone from 0-100% in about 40 minutes. It also supports up to 50W wireless charging – but the fast 50W speeds require Vivo’s proprietary wireless charger.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Stunning cameras" comment="subhead" text="Stunning cameras"><span data-til="noop">Stunning cameras</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />        <div type="image" title="Camera" msid="92561756" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Vivo X80 Pro rear camera.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Vivo X80 Pro sports a quad camera setup on the back, with a 50MP primary camera with optical image stabilisation, a 48MP ultrawide angle snapper, a 12MP telephoto camera with Vivo’s gimbal stabilisation and an 8MP periscope camera with OIS and 5x optical zoom. Vivo X80 Pro is the sum of the best that Vivo has to offer

<p>Microsoft says the Lumia 830 will cost about $430 before taxes and subsidies, meaning it'll be relatively cheap when you buy it on contract with a carrier. </p>
<p>Keeping with the Lumia line that Nokia started before Microsoft bought its mobile division, the Lumia 830 features a blocky, colorful design. The real selling point, however, seems to be its 10-megapixel PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics.</p>
<p>Traditionally, the PureView camera technology has been reserved for higher end smartphones like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020. But Microsoft is describing the Lumia 830 as an "affordable flagship," which is why its porting over Nokia's more premium camera technology.</p>
<p>PureView is Nokia and Microsoft's image capturing technology. This PureView sensor preserves clarity and detail in images by using a process called oversampling. This essentially means the sensor is combining many pixels into one "perfect" pixel, <a href="http://i.nokia.com/blob/view/-/849564/data/2/-/Download1.pdf">as Nokia explains in its white paper</a> on the technology.</p>
<p>The Lumia 830 will also be one of the first smartphones to come with Microsoft's most recent Windows Phone update known as <a href="http://conversations.nokia.com/2014/09/04/lumia-denim-update/">Lumia Denim</a>. This includes some improvements to Cortana,  the new guest mode-like Apps Corner, and the ability to merge apps into folders among other features.</p>
<p>It also comes with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 resolution screen and a battery that Microsoft says will last for 22 hours on a full charge. The Lumia 830 will be available this month around the world, but Microsoft hasn't mentioned exactly when to expect it. </p>

Tech Insider will publish several interviews with 2016's winners in the coming weeks. Floriuk won 2nd prize in the Nature Singles category for this image.</span></p><p><span>We caught up with him to talk about his photography, his gear, and what it's like to shoot underwater.</span></p><h2><span>Undersea photography is incredibly calming</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>At 34, Floriuk has dived for half his life - starting when he was 17 years old.</span></p><p><span><span>"My mom was a marine biologist, so she was always like 'Oh, you should dive, you should try,'" he said.</span></span></p><p><span><span>He took his first classes in the fjords on the Norwegian coast, but spent most of his college years on dry land. He trained as a social anthropologist, and took classes on photography for ethnographers.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"<span>But then five years ago I discovered a group in Mexico [where he lives] that liked to do expeditions to special places."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>He started diving again, taking every opportunity to follow the group.</span></span></span></p><p><span>"Sometimes you feel when you're diving this amazing feeling. You want to share that feeling. You want to keep that feeling," he said.</span></p><p><span>"So what I try to show with the photos is that state of total relaxation. Feeling totally at peace."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Floriuk's evocative, mostly black-and-white images of underwater realms capture that peacefulness. And making them (along with some landlocked nature shots) is now his full-time job.</p><p>Unlike many nature photographers, Floriuk likes to include people in his images.</p><p>"<span>I am an anthropoligist. I love humanity. I'm very interested in the human being as an animal," he said.</span></p><p><span>"<span>And also, to avoid the human side of the image is like lying. You are never alone. You can take a photo of a lonely lion, but there's people around. There's always people."</span></span></p><p><span><span>That camaraderie is a huge part of the experience for Floriuk. Out on an expedition boat there's no WiFi or cell phone signal. Just miles of open water on all sides, unseen creatures below, and the fellow adventurers on the boat.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"It's a bit like Big Brother," he said. "You get to know each other very well."</span></span></p><h2><span><span>How he made his award-winning shot</span></span></h2><p><span><span>Floriuk wasn't even with his usual expedition group when he made the award-winning image at the top of this story.</span></span></p><p><span><span>In fact, he wasn't supposed to go along at all. His friend called him with just a few day's notice to say there were two spots open on a whale-following mission. He decided to go along, but didn't get his hopes up too high.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"You never know if you'll get to see them or not," he said. "You can know 'That's the area they're gonna be,' and you can hear them. But to see them is very, very, very difficult."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>But about 800 kilometers off the coast of Baja California on the western side of Mexico, they spotted three humpbacks - a mother, a calf, and a third along for the trip. He'd never seen whales up close before.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"<span>They were very comfortable," he said. "It was a very cool thing."</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>The massive underwater mammals ended up spending three days alongside the boat, giving Anuar nine hours of dive time to shoot thousands of images. The calf was learning to breathe from its mother.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Floriuk said the shot was entirely improvised. He was near the whales when they suddenly turned and swam right at some of the other divers. You can see the commotion on the water as they scrambled out of the creatures' way.</span></span></span></span></p><h2><span><span><span><span>Sometimes small is the best technology for the job</span></span></span></span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Underwater, Floriuk shoots with a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G">Sony RX-100</a> digital point-and-shoot camera.</p><p>Now, the RX-100 sits at the top tier of shooters that will fit in your pocket with its f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens and fairly large one-inch sensor. But it's hardly what you might expect one of the world's greatest underwater photographers to use as his primary device.</p><p>But the RX-100 is light enough to easily carry on a scuba suit, shoots beautiful RAW images, and at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G">$398 on Amazon</a> it wouldn't be too painful to replace if it got waterlogged.</p><p>Floriuk houses his device in a specialized <a href="http://www.nauticamusa.com/news/?category=Sony+RX-100">Nauticam</a> case. When he wants to shoot wide he attaches an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Inon--UWL-S100-DOME-Mount-52mm-Angle/dp/B00TZ1Y6RI/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1458241538&amp;sr=8-2-fkmr1&amp;keywords=inon+h100+dome">Inon dome</a> (pictured right).</p><p>When shooting nature on dry land, Floriuk's equipment choices get even more idiosyncratic.</p><p>For his more rugged adventures he packs a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSC-RX1-Cyber-shot-Full-frame-Digital/dp/B0097CXFCC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1458241787&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=sony+Rx-1">Sony RX-1</a>, the RX-100's bigger, pricier cousin.</p><p>At about $2,800, the RX-1's sized just a bit bigger than a point and shoot. But it's got the full-frame sensor of a professional DSLR with a fixed 35mm f/2 lens.</p><p>His favorite camera, though, is his <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Leica-Monochrom-Digital-Rangefinder-Camera/dp/B00X0LTT">Leica M Monochrome</a>.</p><p>Pretty much unique among digital devices, the M Monochrome makes black and white RAW files. There's no editing to be done - the sensor itself sees everything in greyscale.</p><p>Why would you want to limit yourself like that? Floriuk says the black and white device actually expands his creativity.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"<span>I think it's a psychological thing," he said. "Like, you are limited by black and white and you don't have to think about color. You are free of color. Color is always a problem. It distracts. Not only to the viewer. It distracts when you are taking the photo. So the moment color's not in my mind anymore, the whole way my mind works about the photographic process changes totally. You're looking differently. By discarding color, not having it in your hands, you totally start to change the way you think about a photo."</span></p><p><span>The fact that the M Monochrome packs Leica's film-textured digital sensors and ultra-high-end lenses doesn't hurt either. He uses the $7,500 device for street photography, and recently brought it on a penguin expedition to Antarctica.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Anuar Patjane Floriuk</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Floriuk makes color images as well. But even when shooting on a color camera, he said he keeps in mind how he will process the image.</span></p><p><span>"<span>I mostly shoot black and white. Underwater is black and white. Street photography is black and white. Nature and landscape you need color for many photos. When I take the photo I know 95% of the time: This is going to be color.
