After expanding vigorously in the cab-sharing services in India, Ola is reportedly investing $100 million in Vogo, a platform for renting scooters. The investment will be made in tranches, according to media <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/ola-commits-100m-to-scooter-sharing-co-vogo/articleshow/67154225.cms">reports</a>. Ola had earlier participated in a Series A funding round by Vogo that was aimed at raising $7 million. While Vogo has been able to fetch a considerable investment from Ola, it will reportedly continue to function as an independent start-up, reported <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/rLno5nzfDNcAWjcq3H9HnM/Ola-invests-100-million-in-scootersharing-startup-Vogo.html"> LiveMint</a>. The company is planning to build a ‘multi-modal network for first-last mile connectivity’ in the country, Bhavish Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO and co-founder of Ola <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/ola-commits-100m-to-scooter-sharing-co-vogo/articleshow/67154225.cms">told</a> TOI. Ola has been working aggressively to expand its reach in urban transportation. It earlier acquired a transportation information provider, Ridlr. Both Ola and Uber have been in stiff competition in the cab-rental services for a while now. While Uber also offers a similar service under the name ‘<keyword id="3269374" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber-moto">Uber Moto</keyword>., However, the service does not allow customers to drive the bike themselves but only accompany an Uber driver. Vogo, which has services in Hyderabad and Bangalore, allows its customers to pick up and rent from certain areas. The problem of congestion at India’s urban cities only seems to be getting worse. Services like scooter-sharing may be a solution for urban Indians, the company hopes. Uber users were able to save nearly 40% of their time when they traveled through ‘Uber Moto,’ Quartz reported. India’s homegrown cab service company Ola is infusing $100 million into scooter-sharing startup Vogo to boost ‘last-mile connectivity’

Gone are the days when you had to contact the local travel agency to get a cab or hail one off the road or the neighborhood taxi stand. The proliferation of radio cab services across several major cities in India has allowed seamless booking of cabs anytime and anywhere over a call, and now through smartphone <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword>. 
 
Uber 
 
The San Francisco-based transportation network company prefers to position itself as a technology company that offers mobile apps to connect passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire and ridesharing services. 
 The service was recently launched in India, and offers two tiers of cars for hire – UberBLACK and uberX – appealing to a broader cross-section of the market. The service, which has grown to 10 cities, is already making India the biggest market for Uber outside of the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>. 
 You need to sign up using the app with your credit card (some debit cards work too). The app shows the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of available cars around you. Once you book it, you can track the reserved car’s location on a map and contact the <keyword id="6366401" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Driver">driver</keyword> as well. After the ride, the amount is debited from the linked card and you don’t have to pay any cash to the driver. The app also allows ridesharing, so two friends sharing a ride can split the fare between two seamlessly. 
 
Uber is a great way to ‘hail a cab’ via an app. But you cannot book one in advance, and that sometimes is a concern, for example: you don’t want to leave a booking till last minute for a 4 am flight. 
 
Meru Cabs 
 Meru Cabs is one of the most popular and earliest radio cabs service in India. The fleet service provides services in seven cities - Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chennai – with two fleet levels, Meru and Meru Plus. 
 Unlike Uber, the Meru Cabs app is only needed for booking the cab. Once the cab has been booked and you’ve contacted the driver, you don’t need the app for the ride. Of course it’s good to have to check out route details and share <keyword id="154361" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="feedback">feedback</keyword>, but it’s not required. The meter is available in the car and you need to pay off the driver at the end of the trip. 
 
Also, the app allows you book a cab for a trip right away (within 35 minutes) or in advance beyond 35 minutes for up to 3 days. You can also check out you booking history from within the app. 
 
Mega Cabs 
 
Similar to Meru Cabs in service and app experience, Mega Cabs is also one of the early radio cabs service in the country. The only difference is that Mega Cabs does not have fleet/car options, and has a unified fare. 
 With presence in six cities – Delhi NCR, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana – the company claims to be India’s largest taxi service network. 
 
Olacabs 
 
Ola is quite simply the Indian Uber and has quickly grown to serve 10 cities already. Modelled on the latter, Olacabs does not own its own fleet and partners with car rental services making their cars for hire available through the app. Like Uber, there are two fleet levels, sedan and mini, and even the referral credit is the same Rs 300! 
 
Of course, the Indian company takes care of lack of penetration of credit cards in the country. You can recharge your account to keep ‘Ola Money’ in your account for frequent payments, or pay cash to the driver at the end of the trip. Also, my only gripe with Uber is taken care of as you can make a booking in advance as well. 
 
TaxiForSure 
 The latest entrant in the market, TaxiForSure, intends to bring affordable <keyword id="160739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cab-service">cab service</keyword> to the masses, with fares that are slightly less than the options above. Available in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, and Baroda, the service offers the option of a hatchback or sedan in most cities. 
 
Like other services, you could book a cab for a trip right away or make a booking in advance. However, the ‘right away’ is not clearly defined and there’s no way to specify an exact time. If you are making an immediate booking, you could be offered a cab in the next ten minutes or an hour later.

Book A Cab In India With These Slick Apps On Your Smartphone

Don’t underestimate the power of a…Meru Cab. India’s only profit making taxi services company has recently raised around $25 million from Brand Capital, the investment arm of Bennett, Coleman and Co. Ltd (BCCL), the same group that publishes the Times of India newspaper. 
 
As per the official statement, the money will be used to strengthen the company’s foothold in the country’s domestic taxi-hailing market, increase brand awareness via advertising and promotions, and widen its customer segment. 
 “With the ongoing transformation in the taxi industry, this move is in line with the company's efforts to showcase its services to a larger customer segment via a bouquet of media channels,” said Siddhartha Pahwa, CEO, <keyword id="108722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Meru-Cabs">Meru Cabs</keyword>. 
 
Since May 2015, when Meru last raised $50 million from its existing investor India Value Fund Advisors (IVFA), it has expanded its taxi service to 24 new cities, launched four new products and expanded its fleet size to over 20,000 vehicles. 
 
Meru entered the highly-competitive online taxi-hailing market back in 2007 when the Maharashtra government invited tenders for GPS-linked electronically metered cab for 10,000 cabs in 2006. 
 
Headquartered in Mumbai, Meru Cabs was launched with a mere 45 taxis back in 2007. It expanded operations to three cities in 2008, namelyDelhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and followed it up with two more - Jaipur and Ahmedabad in 2013 and Chennai in 2015. 
 
India’s organized taxi-hailing market currently stands at over $1.2 billion, and is expected to touch $15 billion by 2022. This enormous opportunity at hand has led to a bitter price war between the likes of Uber and Ola.

Meru Cabs raises $25 million from Times Group, looking to expand further

It’s good news for the aam aadmi. Internet service providers (ISPs) have written to Department of Telecom (DoT) that they will not be able to block the websites of these cab providers. The DoT on May 12, had asked ISPs to block the websites of these app-based taxi operators such as <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> following a request by the Delhi government. 
	 According to an ET report, Rajesh Chharia, the president of <keyword id="128627" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet-Service-Providers-Association-of-India">Internet Service Providers Association of India</keyword> said that ISPs can only block http sites and not https sites. “https sites have higher encryption code. 
	 
	The report also quoted an ISP service provider which noted that cab companies such as Ola and Uber could not be blocked as they were https sites while TaxiforSure could be as it was a http site. 
	 
	"We can only block http sites and not the https sites as the latter have higher encryption codes," Rajesh Chharia, the president of the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) said. According to an ISP service provider, Uber and Ola are https sites, but TaxiForSure could be blocked as it is an http site. 
	 
	In a separate development, the Road Transport ministry on Thursday said that these cab companies will be regulated by states under the Motor Vehicles Act. The directive came following a telecom department query that sought clarity regarding the regulation of the internet-based cab operators. According to the report by ET, there has been confusion as it was not clear if these taxi providers are regulated by the Information technology Act or the Motor Vehicles Act. 
	 
	The road ministry will now send a formal communication to direct all states to regulate apps of these cabs on Friday.

DoT orders not followed? Know why Ola, Uber websites cannot be blocked

<keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, India's largest app-based cab aggregator has stood in favour of Karnataka's new regulations that ask for governing tech-based cab hailing services. It has also accused its arch rival, the multinational cab-aggregator company <keyword id="2502101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword>, of flouting all Indian norms and working in India only for its profit. 
 Ola has also said that it is the only cab aggregator that has been issued a license under the new regulations, and it’s because it satisfies all the conditions laid down by the government. On <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> challenging the laws, it said that the petition was "motivated and has been filed in an attempt to bypass the laws of the land by foreign companies who run their operations in this country for profit without due regard for the applicable laws." 
 
It added that Karnataka government has framed the rules with the primary object "to promote and ensure the safety of the user-riders availing the services of aggregators... The rules emphasize the need to provide safety and security to the user-riders." 
 As per Additional Advocate General <keyword id="3449750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="A-S-Ponnanna">A.S.Ponnanna</keyword>’s submissions before Justice Aravind Kumar, the Karnataka government will not allow any aggregator to offer white-board (non-passenger) vehicles on their platforms. To this, Ola, in the affidavit that it filed, said that it does not operate any private vehicles on its platform, but also accused Uber of offering such services in the form of bike-taxies in Gurgaon and car-pooling in Bengaluru. 
 
It added that Uber has been allowing private vehicles without valid contracts and permits on its platform, under the name of car-pooling.

Uber is a foreign firm working in India only for profits, says Ola

Mumbai, Jan 6 () App-based taxi service provider Prakriti E-Mobility on Monday said it has tied up with US-based Ridecell Inc as its technology partner in India for its all-electric cab service, Evera.
 The company also announced the launch of its app-based EV cab services across the national capital region (NCR).
 Ridecell Technology provides a comprehensive end-to-end mobility solution that allows Prakriti E-Mobility to quickly launch the fleet and streamline efficiencies through predictive analytics for fleet operations and maintenance, the company said.
 "We are excited to be working closely with Ridecell to bring a unique mobility service to India," Prakriti E-Mobility CEO and Co-founder Nimish Trivedi said.
 Ridecell's technology solution will equip Prakriti E-Mobility with a seamless, comprehensive and customisable platform, he said.
 The technology will also offer a complete shared mobility platform that includes a rider and driver app, a cloud-based operational dash board to control vehicle assignment, ride pricing and other critical service parameters, the company said.
 Co-founded by Nimish Trivedi, Vikas Bansal and Rajeev Tiwari, Prakriti E-Mobility provides app-based cab services with features such as zero surge charge and cancellation fee, among others.
 "We are excited to be working with Prakriti E-mobility to launch a sustainable transportation solution in India. <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> has launched its low cost <keyword id="160739" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cab-service">cab service</keyword>, <keyword id="2604816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="UberGo">UberGo</keyword>, in India today. With comparatively affordable fare, UberGo will lock horns with <keyword id="6362049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ola-Cabs">Ola Cabs</keyword>, TaxiForSure and other domestic cab services. The company said that the fare will be similar to that of an auto. 
 
UberGo has roped in hatchbacks like the Toyota Etios Liva, Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Tata Indica Vista and Maruti Suzuki Swift. As an introductory offer, it is giving a discount of 25%. It will charge Rs 30 as base fare and additional Rs 9 per km and 75 paise per minute. The minimum fare would be Rs 60. 
 
The company has launched this service in 10 cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Kolkata.

Hopping from one app to another, looking for a cab is an irritant and consumes a lot of time. This grumble by consumers was heard by Shalak Nail and Neha Bora, who have come up with taxi app aggregator-Loco Cabs. 
 <keyword id="3170727" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Loco-Cabs">Loco Cabs</keyword>, which was launched this year, has data of all cabs, such as <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, on one single app. 
 "We started with the app showing the cabs available close by and then a few months ago we approached Uber and Ola (and <keyword id="1428790" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="TaxiforSure">TaxiForSure</keyword>) to allow us to be able to facilitate their bookings as well," Naik told ET. 
 
By aggregating all taxi apps on one, taxi aggregators are to gain only as window will open to more users. 
 
Loco Cabs works as an aggregator for small-time travel companies and cab owners making intercity and overnight trips. 
 
Loco Cabs has tied up with Paytm and CCavenue and is in talks with Meru and Mega Cabs as well. 
 
Apart from cabs, they are also planning to add bus service. 
 
"The immediate priority is India but then as the market matures, we'd like to be a platform for all your surface travel needs. When you need to travel, you should be able to get the cheapest and fastest option here," said Naik.

It’s not everyday cab hailing services in India gets a pat on their back on social media. While most of the days they must be combating complaints and nasty feedbacks, today seemed a bit different. Bengaluru based cab service Ola Cab, throttling in top gear for their recent acquisitions had a weird tweet on their micro blogging site. A Hyderabad based ‘Physician’ Seelam Veerapa Naidu made an offensive request and asking for a cab with a 'driver of Hindu faith only'.
 Ola’s smart reply, “Sorry, we don't discriminate against our drivers on the basis of their religion” took the social media by storm. This drew appreciations from Ola’s competitors Uber and Easy Cabs and also erstwhile J&amp;K CM <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> among others. Naidu’s attempt to defend his request by tweeting "My intention is not to hurt anyone" didn’t stop people from hateful and sarcastic tweets throughout the day.
