Canada Pension Plan Investment Board has committed to invest USD 205 million in <keyword id="2024711" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="indospace" source="Orion">IndoSpace</keyword>'s new real estate fund to develop industrial and logistics parks in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. IndoSpace is one of the largest investor, developer, and operator of grade A industrial and logistics real estate in India. CPP Investments commits $205 mn to Indospace's new fund for building industrial, logistic parks in India

<ul><li>For the quarter ended September, the <keyword id="2365186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canada-pension-fund" source="Orion">Canada pension fund</keyword> delivered 0.2% returns “continuing to outperform leading global indices during this period”, said CPP investment in a release.</li><li>During the same period, Indian benchmark index <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> surged nearly 17% despite negative cues from the global markets.</li><li><keyword id="11083569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPP-investments" source="Orion">CPP investments</keyword> said that the fund’s quarterly results were adversely affected by broad declines in global public and private equity markets and in fixed income markets.</li></ul><keyword id="4536260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Canada-Pension-Plan-Investment" source="Orion">Canada Pension Plan Investment</keyword> Board (CPP Investments) ended its September 2022 quarter with net assets of 529 billion Canadian dollars, a net income of CA$1 billion and fund inflows of CA$5 billion during the quarter.<br /><br />For the quarter ended September, the fund gave 0.2% returns, “continuing to outperform leading global indices during this period”, said CPP investment in a release.<br /><br />During the same period, the Indian benchmark index Sensex surged nearly 17% backed by domestic and FII inflows (positive flows in July and August) despite negative cues from the global markets. <br /><br />The Canada Pension Plan, which includes the combination of the base CPP and additional CPP accounts, achieved five- and ten-year annualized net returns of 8.5% and 10.1%, respectively, it said. <br /><br />Additional Canada Pension Plan (CPP) was started to provide enhanced future benefits for workers. The increased contributions and associated benefits are referred to as additional CPP, whereas the historic contributions and associated benefits are referred to as the base CPP.<br /><br /><strong>‘Portfolio remains resilient’<br /></strong>“Our portfolio remains resilient despite inflationary pressures, increases in central bank rates and the continued impact of the war in Ukraine, which resulted in the continued decline in global financial markets during the quarter,” said <keyword id="327205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="john-graham" source="Orion">John Graham</keyword>, <keyword id="191828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="president-and-ceo" source="Orion">president and CEO</keyword>. <br /><br />“While we expect these conditions to persist throughout the fiscal year, our diversified investment portfolio – across asset classes and geographies – continues to create long-term value for CPP contributors and beneficiaries. Our active management strategy, designed to deliver results over the long te-rm, remains on track as demonstrated by our strong 10-year net return of 10.1%.”<br /><br />For six months from April to September, the fund delivered negative 4% returns. <br /><br />CPP investments said that the fund’s quarterly results were adversely affected by broad declines in global public and private equity markets and in fixed income markets. <br /><br />“However, the decline in value was more than offset by gains in U.S. dollar-denominated private equity, real estate and credit investments, which benefited from foreign exchange gains, and by positive returns on investments in energy and infrastructure. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board delivers 0.2% returns in September quarter

Walmart-owned Flipkart will undertake a buyback employee <keyword id="6368159" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock">stock</keyword> options worth about Rs 600 crore, according to sources.<br /><br />Earlier in the day, Flipkart announced raising $3.6 billion (about Rs 26,805.6 crore) in funding from a clutch of investors that valued the e-commerce major at $37.6 billion (about Rs 2.79 lakh crore).<br /><br />In an e-mail to employees, Flipkart group chief executive officer <keyword id="6379357" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kalyan-krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> lauded the critical role played by the staff in reaching this milestone.<br /><br />"It has always been our endeavour to provide our employees with an opportunity to liquidate their vested options regularly. This year, we are pleased to announce a buyback of 5 per cent of the past three years' vested options. With this landmark event for us, I am happy to share that we are offering our employees an additional buyback of 5 per cent of all vested options as we stay committed to wealth creation for you," he said.<br /><br />While the e-mail did not provide additional details, sources said the employee stock options buyback would entail a spending of about Rs 600 crore, and employees will be able to liquidate up to 10 per cent of their vested shares depending on the individual's holding pattern.<br /><br />They added that about 6,000 people are expected to benefit from the buyback.<br /><br />The company confirmed the development but did not disclose any details.<br /><br />Employees are granted options based on their tenure, performance, and contributions to the company.<br /><br />In his e-mail, Krishnamurthy said the fund infusion received by Flipkart is "one of the most significant investments in the digital commerce ecosystem in India, reflecting the opportunity for digital commerce in India and the confidence of investors in our ability to address this potential".<br /><br />"As we continue to focus on meeting the needs of our customers, we will make several investments across people, technology, supply chain, and infrastructure, and continue to strengthen and build on key categories and business opportunities," he added.<br /><br />Krishnamurthy emphasised that the company must sustain its commitment to its existing customers and introduce the value proposition of digital commerce to the next 200 million Indians, ensuring that it innovates to create value and experiences for them.<br /><br />"Through our partnerships with ecosystem players, not only do we need to accelerate growth for them, but we must also direct our efforts to enable inclusive growth for lakhs small and medium businesses who have an opportunity to benefit from the potential of digital commerce in India," he added.<br /><br />Flipkart Group has raised $3.6 billion in funding led by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), <keyword id="9240440" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="softbank-vision-fund-2">SoftBank Vision Fund 2</keyword> and Walmart, valuing the e-commerce giant at $37.6 billion.<br /><br />The current funding round has also seen participation from sovereign funds DisruptAD, <keyword id="6437412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qatar-Investment-Authority">Qatar Investment Authority</keyword>, Khazanah Nasional Berhad as well as marquee investors Tencent, <keyword id="11620199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="willoughby-capital">Willoughby Capital</keyword>, Antara Capital, Franklin Templeton, and Tiger Global.<br /><br />With this deal, <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> is re-entering Flipkart's cap table. E-commerce platform Flipkart to buyback employee stock options worth ₹600 crore, say sources

Total expenses of the firm surged 17.10 per cent to ₹17,336.45 crore from ₹14,370.55 crore in the year-ago period.<br /><br />The company also said profit after tax of its subsidiary - <keyword id="111876" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bajaj-finance" source="Orion">Bajaj Finance</keyword> - for the third quarter increased 40 per cent to ₹2,973 crore, against ₹2,125 crore in the year-ago period, mainly led by robust assets under management (AUM) growth. higher net interest income and better asset performance.<br /><br /><keyword id="6358511" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bajaj" source="Orion">Bajaj</keyword> Finance (<keyword id="144840" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bfl" source="Orion">BFL</keyword>)'s gross non-performing asset (NPA) and Net NPA as on December 31, 2022, stood at 1.14 per cent and 0.41 per cent, respectively, as against 1.73 per cent and 0.78 per cent as on December 31, 2021. <ul class="summary-list"><li>One-stop super apps are a dream ambition for Silicon Valley CEOs. </li><li>Apps that offer ride-hailing, e-commerce, and payments have found success outside the US.</li></ul><p>Silicon Valley's tech chiefs are talking more about chasing a dream that no company has accomplished in the West: building a super app.</p><p>Imagine an app that lets you pay your rent, call a cab, share pictures and video, text friends, and shop for groceries or a new TV. A Frankenstein's monster that combines Amazon, Uber, Instagram, Whatsapp, and Venmo, and whatever banking app you currently use.</p><p>These do-it-all apps exist outside the US: WeChat is the super app supreme in China, while Careem aspires to that status in the Middle East, Rappi in Latin America, and Grab in Southeast Asia.</p><p>Tech CEOs want to replicate the model in the West, with the loudest voice on super apps in recent months being Twitter's new boss. Weeks before finalizing his $44 billion Twitter deal, <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1577428272056389633">Elon Musk tweeted</a> that "buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app", and has since talked up the idea in a town hall.</p><p>Mark Zuckerberg and Evan Spiegel harbor super app ambitions; Microsoft <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=6399cc86aca7613214151ae9&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Fmicrosoft-eyes-super-app-to-break-apple-and-googles-hold-on-mobile-search%3Futm_campaign%3DAutomated%2BFallback%2BR%26utm_content%3D89%26utm_medium%3Demail%26utm_source%3Dcio%26utm_term%3D19%26rc%3Dzyd7ab">reportedly</a> wants to build its take on a super app that would rival Google.</p><p>The ambition makes sense. Although China's WeChat is overall smaller than the big US tech firms by users, it commands something they all crave: attention. Up-to-date stats are difficult to come by, but <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=6399cc86aca7613214151ae9&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scribd.com%2Fdocument%2F349976554%2Fmary-meeker-s-internet-trends-report-2017%23from_embed">a 2017 statistic from investor Mary Meeker</a> pegged the time Chinese users spend across WeChat and QQ, a messaging app, at 1.9 billion hours every day — more than all other apps combined at the time.</p><p>But attempts to create a super app in the US could be the place where billionaire dreams die, because the hurdles are just too great.</p><h2><strong>What Silicon Valley CEOs want </strong></h2><p>What an "everything app" looks like seems to differ slightly tech billionaire by billionaire. Earlier this year, Musk spoke highly of WeChat as "Twitter, plus PayPal, plus a whole bunch of other things, all rolled into one."</p><p>At Facebook's parent company Meta, "super app" is a taboo word precisely because it's too abstract, Insider's Kali Hays <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-whatsapp-matt-idema-meta-business-ambitions-2022-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">reported last month</a>. But it's clear CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants something <em>like</em> a super app. The firm's attempts to build out standalone payment capabilities through the Libra/Diem blockchain project failed, but other apps in its family such as Instagram and WhatsApp are bolting on payment and e-commerce functionality.</p><div type="image" title="phone with social apps" height="563" width="1000" msid="96234564" hostid="261" sizebytes="33758"></div><p>As Zuckerberg and his team seem to have noticed, payments are critical to any would-be super app.</p><p>Fintech is "part of most super apps' operations or aspirations." Paying for things is central to WeChat's success, according to research published in October in the journal <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/01634437221127805">Media, Culture &amp; Society</a>.</p><p>But payments are a tough nut for Silicon Valley to solve. It's still relatively uncommon to pay for things using your phone in the US, compared with Europe and other territories. Half of US smartphone users are expected to adopt mobile payments as late as 2025, according to <a href="https://www.insiderintelligence.com/newsroom/index.php/us-payment-users-will-surpass-100-million-this-year/">eMarketer research</a>. By contrast, 64% of China's population had made a payment on their phone by the end of 2021, according to a report from <a href="https://daxueconsulting.com/payment-methods-in-china/">China UnionPay</a>, the state-owned financial services firm.</p><p>Well-developed payments apps exist in the form of Venmo or Cash App, but a reverse attempt to build non-payment services into those apps may be a lengthier process: competition to lead the market they're already in is fierce, and American users have become accustomed to a diverse choice of apps. </p><p>Companies will struggle to generate the stickiness needed to make a super app work the way WeChat does, which has ratcheted up more than 1 billion users thanks to its mix of services and payments that ensures people don't have to look elsewhere. </p><h2><strong>America isn't China, Africa, or India</strong></h2><div type="image" title="China phone" height="2000" width="2667" msid="96234566" hostid="261" sizebytes="148982"></div><p>Super apps in Europe and North America are "expected to evolve differently" from places like Asia and Latin America, where there are "serious infrastructure gaps", according to a white paper published in 2020 by CPP Investments, a Canadian asset management firm.</p><p>These gaps mean that "electronic payment penetration is minimal" in many developing economies. In India, for instance, almost a quarter of adults don't have bank accounts, making these markets ripe for a super app that meets those needs, the paper suggests. In China, smartphones were first entry point to the internet for large swathes of its population. </p><p>But banking and e-commerce are already well-developed in the US and Europe, where consumers have plenty of choice. A newcomer super app has a tougher sell accessing this sophisticated, less trusting type of user.</p><p>There's another clear reason why the most successful super app has emerged in China. The regulatory strong arm of Beijing has shut out foreign competitors from offering Chinese consumers any alternative.</p><h2><strong>Silicon Valley's gatekeepers stand in the way of the super app dream</strong></h2><p>US tech firms harboring super app ambitions will need to fend off their own regulators, overseas regulators, and Apple's App Store. </p><p>Under Lina Khan, the FTC is becoming more sharply focused on competition and user privacy. Creating super apps would almost certainly require aggressive consolidation through acquisitions — a surefire way of attracting scrutiny. As it stands, American regulators are tending towards a more European approach to data privacy, which favors competition and fragmentation.</p><p>Khan is likely to be a particularly painful thorn in the side of Amazon if it ever decided to join the super app race, with the FTC chair soaring to fame for her <a href="https://www.yalelawjournal.org/pdf/e.710.Khan.805_zuvfyyeh.pdf">research paper </a>on the way Amazon has wielded its power. </p><p>There's also the challenge of Apple.</p><p>With iOS <a href="https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/united-states-of-america">the most popular smartphone operating system in the US</a>, Apple's App Store can make or break an app's success. As the CPP Investments white paper notes, super apps "can be thought of as operating platforms for mobile devices." Apple simply doesn't permit most apps the kind of device-level access they would likely need to act as a super app.</p><p>It is clear that the obstacles on the road to a Silicon Valley-made super app are many. But the opportunity a super app presents is so enticing – despite all the hurdles – that it's a dream many tech CEOs are going to find difficult to let die.</p>

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p><p class="caption">I registered to take the CPI 260 assessment, and it was nothing like what I'd expected.</p></div><p></p></div></div>I've long been skeptical of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sample-questions-on-personality-tests-2015-7">using personality tests for hiring</a>.</p><p class="p1">Having never been asked to complete one while applying for a job, I assumed they were somewhat similar to the quizzes in Seventeen magazine I spent the better part of my adolescence taking.</p><p class="p1">Those quizzes, it seemed, were only useful for diagnosing people on the extremes - those who were destined to become the next Shakira or those who were permanent wallflowers. Every single assessment I took labeled me "average," and yet with each new issue came the hope that the editorial team would be able to discern something novel and exciting about me.</p><p class="p1">Eventually, I stopped taking those quizzes, resigning myself to the belief that I was, alas, exactly like everyone else.</p><p class="p1">Then, a few weeks ago, I spoke with a consultant at CPP, the organization that publishes the Myers-Briggs personality test, about a newer tool, the <a href="https://www.cpp.com/products/cpi/index.aspx">CPI 260.</a> It's designed to assess leadership potential in the workplace.</p><p class="p2">On some level, I thought the whole idea sounded vaguely ridiculous. But the Seventeen-subscribing brace-face in me was dying to know: Could this be it - the test that would finally tell me who I <em>really</em> was and could potentially become? Would it drastically alter the course of my career?</p><p class="p1">I registered to take it <a href="https://www.cpp.com/en/searchentry.aspx?query=CPI&amp;query_f=Y&amp;Search_type=all&amp;sort=author">online</a>.</p><h3 class="p1">How the assessment works</h3><p class="p1">The CPI 260 is typically used either when there's a performance issue with an employee or a manager wants to help an employee develop into a more senior role at the company. Individuals can also purchase the test themselves when they're working with a career coach.</p><p class="p1">Companies including the Red Cross, AIM Investment Services, and Delta Associates have used the assessment for talent development.</p><p class="p1">The test consists of 260 true/false items and takes approximately 40 minutes to complete online. In order to register for the assessment and purchase the three reports analyzing your personality, you need to work with a practitioner who is certified by CPP to interpret the results. All three reports together cost $136.85. <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">(CPP waived my fee.)</span></p><p class="p1">The questions are strange, to say the least. There's one asking whether you'd enjoy listening to an opera singer and another asking whether you'd like to be a race car driver.</p><p class="p1">When I initially spoke with Sherrie Haynie, the CPP consultant, about the CPI 260, she told me the questions were designed so that you can't tell exactly what they're assessing. Some measure your ability to self-manage; some measure your penchant for teamwork; some measure how honest you're being on the rest of the assessment.</p><p class="p1">And even though you're the one taking the test, Haynie said the questions are opaque enough that the results better resemble what other people would say about you than what you'd say about yourself.</p><p class="p1">Once you complete the test, CPI generates three reports, one of which compares your traits and competencies to the general population and one that compares you to successful C-suite executives. Clients have the option to purchase all three reports or just one. CPP sent me all three, and Haynie and I arranged a phone call to discuss the results.</p><p class="p2">From my perspective, the assessment nailed it. Reading through the report, I felt exposed, as if everyone I'd ever worked with had gathered to discuss their impressions of my performance and these reports were summaries of their conversation.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Justin Sullivan/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">I thought the results meant I could become the next Steve Jobs.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3 class="p1">My reports</h3><p class="p1">Right away, things got slightly meta. One report showed that I scored low on measures of communality, which means that I tend to see myself as different from other people. In other words, the test picked up on the reason I was taking the test in the first place - to finally have some scientific evidence of my individuality.</p><p class="p1">As for whether seeing yourself as unique is an asset in a leadership role, the report said someone with my communality score (43/100) "may be careless, easily distracted." That didn't sound good.</p><p class="p2">Yet Haynie told me it's a positive thing: "You question the masses."</p><p class="p1">That sounded awesome - like I could someday be the next Steve Jobs.</p><p class="p1">But the coaching report told a different story. Haynie cautioned that a) the coaching report is typically only used with people who have already held leadership positions for a while, which I haven't; and b) areas for "development" just mean you didn't hit the <em>exact</em> score that's expected of successful leaders. You could have been really close.</p><p class="p1">Still, I was curious to find out how I stacked up against high-level execs. In the first few pages, I discovered I was lower than most successful leaders in self-awareness. Apparently, that means others may see me as "overly conventional and unlikely to challenge the status quo" - pretty much the opposite of questioning the masses.</p><p class="p1">Loathe as I am to admit it, this is true. I've been told by coworkers in the past that I don't contribute enough in meetings - that I should speak up if I disagree with someone else's idea. It's incredibly hard for me to do.</p><p class="p1">Similarly, the test determined that I am "likely less willing than other leaders to make decisions and demands on others." That assessment is also, based on my experience, true, though not something I would ever volunteer - especially not in an interview for a job or a more senior position.</p><p class="p1">Most of my skills, apparently, lay in team-building and teamwork. The report suggested that other people see me as outgoing; that I can demonstrate compassion without getting overly caught up in other people's problems; and that I'm more open than usual to other people's ideas.</p><p class="p1">These were interesting findings. At one point, I considered a career as a clinical psychologist, and I make a point of trying to be sympathetic and a good listener in my personal life.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Vimeo</span></p><p class="caption">The reports serve as a clear reflection of your strengths and weaknesses.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3 class="p1">What the results mean</h3><p class="p1">Haynie said most people who take the CPI 260 are shocked at how well the reports describe them, and I could see why. I'll admit, it was slightly disturbing to see the most salient elements of my professional persona reproduced on the pages of the reports.</p><p class="p1">But the point isn't to make you feel that your personality is simple enough to be boiled down to a few charts and graphs. The idea is for the assessment to serve as a kind of reflective therapist, who listens to what you say about yourself, and figures out what you <em>aren't</em> saying about yourself. Where are your weaknesses and limitations? Where have you consistently struggled?</p><p class="p1">It's as useful for the test-taker herself as it is for a manager or potential employer, because it sheds some light on aspects of your personality you might have lost touch with. </p><p class="p1">And as much as I'd feared that the assessment would label me "average" and unremarkable, in reality it left me feeling like I was a more complex person than I could have imagined. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mario Tama/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Warren Buffett</p></div><p></p></div></div>Some of the biggest names in American business want companies to change their behavior.</p><p>Warren Buffett, Jamie Dimon, and more signed on to a list of suggested changes that companies should adopt entitled <a href="http://www.governanceprinciples.org/">"Commonsense Corporate Governance Principles."</a></p><p>The group said that companies need to change the way they are managing their board of directors, reporting earnings, and interacting with major investors.</p><p>"Our future depends on these companies being managed effectively for long-term prosperity, which is why the governance of American companies is so important to every American," said the group <a href="http://www.governanceprinciples.org/">in a letter on their website.</a></p><p>"Corporate governance in recent years has often been an area of intense debate among investors, corporate leaders and other stakeholders. Rowe Price</li><li>Jeff Ubben, CEO of Valueact Capital</li></ul><p>While the group represents everything from the head of a major bank, industrial leaders, and an activist investoe, they letter said they all believed governance needed reforms.</p><p>"This diverse group certainly holds varied opinions on corporate governance," <a href="http://www.governanceprinciples.org/">said the letter.</a> "But we share the view that constructive dialogue requires finding common ground - a starting point to foster the economic growth that benefits shareholders, employees and the economy as a whole."</p><p>The group <a href="http://www.governanceprinciples.org/">came up with 6 suggestions</a> for governance:</p><ol><li>Board of directors should be truly independent from the company and meet without the CEO present on a regular basis.</li><li>Boards should be diverse and have enough turnover make sure that they remain "fresh."</li><li>The Board should have a strong independent lead director, especially if the CEO has a dual role on the Board.</li><li>Companies are too obsessed with quarterly earnings and shouldn't have to report earnings guidance.</li><li>Companies should be more clear about the difference between their GAAP and adjusted earnings.</li><li>Large institutional investors should have access to the company so they know what is happening when making investment decisions. <p class="p1"><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sebastiaan ter Burg/Flickr</span></p><p class="caption">The test can predict whether you'll be a successful leader, based on your scores in five main areas.</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong>I recently took the CPI 260, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/leadership-personality-test-cpi-260-2015-8">personality test</a> designed to assess leadership potential, and one piece of feedback I received was a report comparing my characteristics to those of successful leaders.</p><p class="p4">The report, which includes clients' ratings in 18 key areas such as decisiveness and the ability to handle sensitive problems, is based on years of research on the factors that go into effective management. The CPI 260, and the reports that come with the results, are used by major companies including <span>Red Cross, AIM Investment Services, and Delta Associates.</span></p><p class="p4">We spoke to Rich Thomspon, divisional director of research at CPP, the organization that publishes the CPI 260, about how the report is produced. (You can see a sample report <a href="https://www.cpp.com/pdfs/smp219350.pdf">here</a>.)</p><p class="p4"><span>In the 1990s,</span> 5,610 managers and executives participated in leadership development programs at <a href="http://www.ccl.org/Leadership/index.aspx">The Center for Creative Leadership</a>. All the execs - a group of mostly white men from a wide range of industries - took the CPI 260 and received 360-degree feedback from managers, peers, and subordinates.</p><p class="p4">A team of researchers led by psychologist Sam Manoogian, Ph.D., then looked at which CPI 260 scores correlated with the most positive feedback in different areas. Manoogian was the chief assessor at CCL from 1996 to 1999, and based on his experience, he selected the 18 traits that he felt were crucial to successful leadership.</p><p class="p3">They are organized into five core competencies: self-management, organizational capabilities, team building and teamwork, problem solving, and sustaining the vision. The competencies represent a hierarchy, so each competency builds on the ones before it. Self-management is at the bottom: You can't excel in any domain until you're able to regulate your own thoughts, emotions, and habits.</p><p class="p4">Here are the 18 traits of successful leaders, according to the report:</p><h3 class="p4">1. Organizational capabilities</h3><p class="p4">Successful managers know how to use power appropriately, work within established procedures, and make decisions.</p><p class="p4"><strong>Use of power and authority</strong> involves exercising power without overwhelming coworkers.</p><p class="p4"><strong>Comfort with organizational structures</strong> means following rules and policies - while still supporting individuality.</p><p class="p4"><strong>Responsibility and accountability</strong> involves owning up to your mistakes and expecting others to do the same.</p><p class="p4"><strong>Decisiveness</strong> is about balancing different perspectives and taking appropriate action.</p><h3 class="p4">3. Problem solving</h3><p class="p5">Problem solving is very much about managing group politics, and understanding why people act the way they do.</p><p class="p5"><strong>Creativity </strong>is about challenging the status quo, even while respecting organizational procedures.</p><p class="p5"><strong>Handling sensitive problems</strong> involves confronting delicate issues head-on, instead of running away from them.</p><p class="p5"><strong>Action orientation </strong>means knowing when it's time to make a decision - even if you haven't gathered all the information you'd ideally like to.</p><h3 class="p8">5. Sustaining the vision </h3><p class="p8">Successful leaders don't just have a plan in mind for their own success - they can also see the company's future and have concrete goals for the organization.
