Coal India Limited (<keyword id="19983407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIL" source="keywords">CIL</keyword>) achieved an 8 per cent <keyword id="19910261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth" source="keywords">growth</keyword> in <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword>, reaching 189.3 million <keyword id="22246379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tonnes" source="keywords">tonnes</keyword> in the first quarter of the current fiscal, surpassing its target of 189.2 million tonnes, the company said in a statement on Monday. The company's production increased by 13.8 million tonnes compared to the corresponding quarter of FY'24, with all seven producing subsidiaries registering positive growth, it said. CIL's supplies also rose by 6 per cent to 198.4 million tonnes during April-June 2024, with a significant increase in supplies to both power and non-power sectors, it added. The company's coal loading witnessed healthy growth, with an average of 367.2 rakes per day, a 10.3 per cent year-on-year increase, it said. Higher production and loading resulted in a substantial increase in coal inventory at CIL's pitheads, reaching 81.5 million tonnes, providing a sufficient buffer to meet any sudden surge in demand, it said. At a time when power demand in the country is surging, the miner stepped up its supplies to coal-fired plants, registering a 4 per cent growth to 160 million tonnes in <keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword> FY'25, a year-on-year increase of 6 million tonnes. In the same period of FY 2024, CIL's off-take to thermal power plants stood at 154 million tonnes, the company said. Additionally, CIL's supplies to the non-power sector reached an all-time high of 38.4 million tonnes in Q1FY25, logging a 16 per cent growth. This sector had received 33 million tonnes in April-June 2023. The growth in June 2024 alone was 23 per cent at 13.4 million tonnes, the statement said. Nagpur, Jun 21 () Coal India Limited (CIL) will engage mine developer cum operators (MDOs) to increase its coal output and reduce import dependency of the dry fuel in the coming years. The Maharatna coal mining behemoth in the process has identified a total of 15 greenfield projects to operate through MDO model of which 12 are open cast and 3 underground, a release by Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) - subsidiary of CIL - said. Combined, they have a total targeted capacity of around 168 million tonne/year (MTY). While the OC projects have a targeted capacity of 162 MTY, UG projects have close to 6 MTY. The contract period would be for 25 years or life of mine whichever is less. "CIL will engage MDOs of international repute, having state-of-the-art-technology through open global tenders, who shall excavate, extract and deliver coal to the coal companies of CIL as per the approved mining plan. "CIL's board recently has given its nod in regard to standard bid document and request for bids for the engagement of MDOs. CIL is laying out plans to complete the formalities by 2021-22 so that all projects become operational and start yielding the output to contribute in 1 BT by 2023-24," it said. It further informed that upcoming identified projects of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, South Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields Limited will form major segments for the MDO mode with targeted capacities of 65.5 MTY, 52.4 MTY and 45 MTY, respectively. Eastern Coalfields Limited and Northern Coalfields Limited will have projects with targeted capacities of 3 MTY and 2 MTY, respectively. "Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) for 2 Projects, Siarmal OC of MCL (40 MTY) and Kotre-Basantpur Pachmo of CCL (5 MTY) together having a targeted capacity of 45 MTY has been floated in 2019-20. While NIT for 5 Projects for a targeted capacity of 68 MTY will be floated in the ongoing fiscal, for the balance 8 projects NIT will be floated in the fiscal, 2021- 22," the release said. It also informed reputed MDOs would be engaged to have multiple advantage of technology infusion, and operational efficiency in the system apart from increased production. Kolkata, Mar 6 () Coal India Limited (CIL) onFriday said it has engaged Indian Port Rail CorporationLimited (IPRCL) to execute its rail infrastructure works,construction of additional sidings, and connectivity with therailway main lines.A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between thetwo entities on Thursday.The move will also help CILs first-mile connectivitywith mines. 'First-mile connectivity' is transportation ofcoal from pithead to despatch point.This will be implemented in 35 of CILs coal projectseach having production a capacity of 4 million tonnes perannum. Infrastructure upgrade at these 35 projectsnecessitatesconstruction of railway lines.CIL has decided to switch over to seamless mechanizedcoal transportation through piped conveyor belts in its largemines by 2023-24 replacing the existing road transport ofcoal.The scope of work of IPRCL includes preparation ofthe feasibility study report, detailed project report and itsapproval from railways, project management consultancy,execution of work, operation and maintenance of siding. Kolkata, Mar 26 () To protect interests of itsconsumers, Coal India Ltd on Thursday said it has relaxedpayment terms and directed the railways to defer loading ofrakes for non-power buyers due to last-mile connectivitydisruption following the nationwide lockdown.The world's largest miner has also directed itssubsidiary companies to extend the date for payment bysuccessful bidders in e-auctions, in case it falls within thelockdown period."CIL is helping its non-power customers overcomelast-mile connectivity issues they are facing due to thenationwide lockout declared to contain the Covid-19 outbreak,"a top Coal India official told .CIL has requested Indian Railways to defer coalloading of rakes for non-power consumers who do not have theirown unloading system inside their plants or have to unloadrakes at other sidings."In the prevailing situation, many non-power consumershave approached CIL requesting deferring of loading of theirallotted rakes," the official said.The situation will be reviewed after the lockdown iswithdrawn, he said.The official said CIL is also changing the time ofvarious e-auction schemes which were scheduled during thelockdown period.The Centre has recently exempted coal and mineralproduction, transportation &amp; activities incidental to miningoperations under the Disaster Management Act and lockdown. Kolkata, Mar 13 () The coal stock at thermal powerplants in the country has risen to its highest-ever level at39.48 million tonne, an official of Coal India Ltd (CIL) saidon Friday.It is "sufficient" for running the power plants for 23days, a day more than the 22-day fuel stock mandate of CentralElectricity Authority (CEA), the official said."Coal stock at thermal power plants in the country hasrisen to the highest ever inventory of 39.48 million tonne onMarch 11, sufficient for 23 days," he said.The stock is expected to further increase during theremaining days of the current fiscal, the official said."The previous high at CEA monitored power plants was39.14 million tonne around four years ago," he said.The average daily coal consumption then was 1.48million tonne, which is currently at around 1.76 milliontonne.The miner supplies coal to 125 thermal power plants,out of 134 monitored by CEA."With coal stocks comfortably placed there should notbe any shortage in the ensuing summer months," the officialsaid.The fuel stock at the pitheads of coal India minesmounted to 51 million tonne on March 11, he added. Coal stock at power plants rises to highest-ever level: CIL

New Delhi, Jan 28 () State-owned Coal India (CIL) has received green clearances for 17 mining projects, a move that will enable the world's largest coal miner to achieve one-billion-tonne production target, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi has said.
 In a tweet the minister said: "For making PM @NarendraModi Ji's vision of 24x7 'Power for All' a reality, @CoalMinistry in co-ordination with @moefcc has got the environment clearances to 17 new and existing coal projects and 3 washeries of @CoalIndiaHQ..."
 "These clearances will add 150 million tonnes of coal in @CoalIndiaHQ kitty in next five years and increase its washing capacity by 25 MTPA enabling the company to achieve 1 billion tonnes of coal production by FY23-24," he tweeted.
 The state-owned company will produce 750 million tonnes of coal in the next financial year, the coal ministry had earlier said.
 CIL will further produce one billion tonnes of coal by FY2024, it had said.
 The PSU is currently given the target of producing 660 million tonnes of coal amounting to 82 per cent of the country's coal output.
 In its annual report 2018-19, the company had said 54 of its coal mining projects were facing delays due to various reasons such as contractual issues and delay in green clearances among others.
 "A total of 120 coal projects costing Rs 20 crore and above are in different stages of implementation. Out of which 66 projects are on schedule and 54 projects are delayed," Coal India had said.
 The major reasons for delay in implementation of these projects are delays in obtaining environment clearance, forest clearance, possessions of land and issues related to resettlement and rehabilitation, contractual issues and evacuation facilities among others. SID SID ANS

CIL gets green nod for 17 mining projects: Coal Minister

New Delhi, Dec 11 () Six of the seven coal producing subsidiaries of the world's largest miner CIL did not devise a policy as mandated by the environment ministry, according to a CAG report tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.
 "Coal India Ltd (CIL) amended its original Corporate Environment Policy (CEP) and formulated a comprehensive Environment Policy only in March, 2012, followed by a revised policy in December 2018.
 "However, six out seven coal producing subsidiaries of CIL did not formulate a policy as mandated by MoEF&amp;CC (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) which stipulated that a well laid down environment policy duly approved by the Board of Directors of the subsidiaries needs to be in place," the report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) said.
 Further, guidelines containing the responsibility and delegation at different levels in environment discipline were formulated by CIL, but the same were not dovetailed in their operating manual by the subsidiaries, according to the CAG report on 'Assessment of Environment Impact due to Mining Activities and its Mitigation in Coal India Ltd and its Subsidiaries'.
 CAG further said the pollutants exceeded the limits prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in eight mines across three subsidiaries of CIL.
 "Further during 2013-18, 62 lakh kilo-litre (KL) of untreated water was discharged to nearby water bodies by Lakhanpur and Basundhara (W) mines of MCL thereby contaminating ground water," it said.
 Coal India arms CCL, BCCL and SECL continued to use ground water for their mining operations without obtaining no objection certificate from Central Ground Water Authority. The subsidiaries did not install sewage treatment plant at the residential colonies of the collieries, thereby contaminating the ground water.
 "Due to absence of mechanical brooming/industrial cleaner in Piparwar OCM of CCL, the spillage from overloaded truck/dumpers accumulated along the sides of the bridge of Safi river, was not cleaned periodically," it said.
 These eventually drained into the river, thereby contaminating the water. Further, the rejects of Kathara washery of CCL were found to be contaminating the Damodar river. SID ABM

CIL''s non-power supply grows 4.4 pc till January

New Delhi, Feb 21 () State-owned CIL's coal supply to the power sector registered a decline of 6.8 per cent to 377.86 million tonnes (MT) in the the April-January period of the ongoing fiscal. The commodity despatch by Coal India (CIL) to the power sector in the year-ago period was 405.61 MT, according to official data. However, the coal despatch by CIL to the power sector in January registered an increase of 2.9 per cent to 43.20 MT, over 42 MT in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal, it said. The supply of dry-fuel by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a state-owned coal miner, in the April-January period also registered a decline of 2.6 per cent to 44.03 MT, over 45.22 MT in the year-ago period. Stating rain as the 'enemy of the coal sector', a government official had earlier blamed extended monsoon for the loss of coal output for a few months (from July) in the current fiscal. CIL saw its production decline by 3.9 per cent to 451.52 MT in April-January period, over 469.65 MT in the year-ago period. The state-owned firm had earlier said that it will produce 750 MT of coal in the next financial year. The firm will further produce 1 billion tonnes of coal by FY2024, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi had said. The public sector undertaking has been given a target of producing 660 million tonnes of coal amounting to 82 per cent of the country's coal output. Joshi had said that with the demand for power rising steeply, there is enough opportunity for both government and private sectors to produce coal without adversely impacting each other. New Delhi, Apr 17 () State-owned Coal India has distributed 1.2 lakh cooked food packets as well as more than 50,000 packets of ration to the needy, besides donating funds to run a community kitchen amid the coronavirus lockdown. "Coal India (CIL) and its subsidiaries are working full throttle to combat the effects of Covid-19," an official said. The PSU has distributed 1.2 lakh cooked food packets to the needy. "More than 50,000 packets of ration have been distributed to the underprivileged by the Maharatna firm," the official added. CIL arm Bharat Coking Coal Ltd has donated Rs 2.88 crore to the Dhanbad administration in Jharkhand for running a community kitchen and distributing food to the needy. In its fight against the pandemic, the PSU is working together with state authorities to make food and healthcare accessible to all. Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi had on Wednesday tweeted, "Proud of our #CoalWarriors who are not only mining coal 24×7, but also doubling up as #CoronaWarriors. @CoalIndiaHQ &amp; its subsidiaries are carrying all-out efforts to distribute cooked food &amp; rations to poor &amp; needy living around its coalfields. #IndiaFightsCorona." CIL subsidiaries have distributed more than 3.3 lakh face masks to the people in and around coal mines as the country battles the coronavirus crisis. The PSU has also set up 1,509 isolation beds in eight states. Covid-19: CIL funds community kitchen, distributes 1.2 lakh food packets

New Delhi, Nov 20 () State-owned CIL will develop 55 new coal mines and expand 193 existing ones in the next five years, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
The company is also undertaking portal-based monitoring of ongoing projects to ensure their timely completion.
"Coal India has taken... steps to boost its coal production, (including) opening of 55 greenfield projects having capacity of 92 MTPA (million tonne per annum) and expansion of 193 brownfield projects having capacity of about 310 MTPA in next five years," Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a reply to the Lok Sabha.
 A new project on an unused land is called a greenfield project while the existing one that is modified or upgraded is called a brownfield project.
Besides, CIL has introduced technology "to improve its work efficiencywith high capacity Heavy Earth Moving Machinery, like 42 cum Shovel and 240 T Rear Dumpers in Gevra Expansion, Dipka &amp; Kusmunda open cast mines (and) introduction of surface miners in opencast mines to improve operational efficiency and to cater to environmental needs."
During 2018-19, around 50 per cent of the opencast coal production in CIL was through surface miners.
Further, in order to reduce import of coal, CIL is taking up source rationalisation with part supply from higher grade coal sources.
 More coal from various sources was offered through e-auction schemes, particularly special forward e-auction, for power consumers, not having fuel supply agreement with CIL sources. SID SID ANU

CIL to develop 55 new coal mines in next 5 yrs: Coal Minister

New Delhi, Jun 23 () Coal India's fuel allocation under the exclusive e-auction scheme for non-power consumers like steel and cement jumped five-fold to 6.10 million tonnes (MT) in the last two months. The state-owned company had allocated 1.20 MT of coal to non-power consumers under the scheme in April-May 2019, as per latest government data. This growth comes amid Coal India Ltd (CIL) looking to tap the non-power sector for consumption of its coal in the wake of a slump in demand for the dry fuel. Under the scheme, CIL allocated 2.19 MT of coal last month, against no fuel allocated by the PSU in May 2019, the data said. For the entire fiscal 2019-20, the PSU's coal allocation under the scheme dropped to 8.03 MT from 11.36 MT in the previous year. The scheme was launched in 2015-16 to make coal available to non-power consumers, including captive power plants. CIL had earlier said it continues to face tepid demand for coal, with most of its customers, like the power sector, shying away from lifting adequate quantities. The power sector, which accounts for close to 80 per cent of CIL's total supplies, is brimming over with nearly 50 MT of coal stock, sufficient for 29 days of consumption, as at May-end, the PSU had said. Many plants have started restricting supplies from CIL further, shrinking coal despatches, it had said. During May, the power sector lifted 30.15 MT of coal from CIL sources, down 25 per cent from 40.38 MT in the same month last year. To find avenues for expanding its supplies, CIL is focusing on non-power sector consumers like sponge iron, cement, fertilisers and steel companies, persuading them to replace their imported coal with domestic supply. CIL's coal allocation under e-auction for non-power sector jumps to 6 MT in Apr-May

New Delhi, Dec 8 () An employee association of state-owned CIL and SCCL on Sunday said it will go on a day-long protest in the national capital on Monday, over lack of pension reforms in the coal sector.
 "The All India Association of Coal Executives, under the banner of All India Coal Pensioners Association (AICPA), will be organising one-day dharna by coal pensioners at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on December 9 (Monday)," it said in a statement.
 The association says that pension of Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) employees has not been reviewed since 1998 despite a provision requiring a review of the Coal Mines Pension Scheme (CMPS) every three years.
 The Coal Mines Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1948, paved the way for creation of a statutory body Coal Mines Provident Fund Office (CMPFO) to formulate and maintain a comprehensive pension scheme for coal employees for the welfare of retired employees in the coal sector.
 "After passage of 50 years, a so-called sustainable pension scheme came into existence and is called CMPS-1998. Coal employers and executives are covered under CMPS-1998 which is effective from April 1, 1994... Despite the provision for review of the scheme every three years, it has not been done and pension once fixed at the time of retirement has never been increased since inception," the statement said.
 As a result, even chairman and managing directors of state-owned coal companies, such as CIL, who retired before 1997 are receiving a monthly pension of only Rs 1,000-Rs 3,000 per month.
 "Whereas even the lowest-level employees of both the PSUs -- CIL and SCCL -- retiring today get more than Rs 10,000 per month as pension due to increase in salary in 2007 and 2017 pay revision for executives and different NCWA (National Coal Wage Agreement) over the last 20 years," the statement said.
 Since inception of the scheme 21 years ago, not even once the pension has been enhanced, the statement said.
 Since CMPS 1998 is a government-notified scheme, the Centre must pitch in to bail out the scheme by levying a cess on coal production in the country. SID HRS
