Kapoor played a kind-hearted but crafty deaf-mute hero in Barfi!, leaving both critics and the audience impressed. But not Dutt, who advised the young actor at a party not to do ‘softie’ roles, and instead, be ‘a macho man’. “Act in macho films. You can’t be doing films like Barfi! You should be holding guns and doing action films. Do you think actors like me, Salman and Ajay would have been around for so many years if we had not played macho characters on screen? You have no connect with the masses and that is very important,” said Dutt, as per a <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/entertainment/report-be-a-macho-man-sanjay-dutt-s-advice-to-ranbir-kapoor-2278180">report by DNA</a>. If we take Box Office reports as the yardstick of success, Dutt’s advice is on point. At present, more than rom-com (which Bollywood has exploited to the point of saturation), socially-relevant topics, biopics, patriotism and action resonate with the masses. From the macho cops of Dabangg, Singham, etc. to the elaborate fight sequences of RRR to one-man-army fights in KGF or Pushpa – originally popularised in the 80s by the ‘angry young man’ Amitabh Bachchan – action clearly sells. Even the original king of romance, Shah Rukh Khan has taken to action movies now! Case in point – his latest film Pathaan, which broke multiple Box Office records. In fact, as revealed in the Netflix documentary series The Romantics, Khan was reluctant to play a romantic hero in the first place. But Kapoor appears to still be chasing rom-coms. Here was a star kid who benefited from nepotism but certainly deserved to be in front of the camera — a claim that was proven absolutely true with a career-defining performance in Raajneeti (2010). In a film starring industry veterans like Nana Patekar, Kapoor held his own — letting his eyes speak volumes, searing himself in your memory. “The key performance comes from Ranbir Kapoor (the son of Bollywood star Rishi Kapoor) as Samar Pratap…The slim, bespectacled Kapoor displays ruthless intensity in his role, and his performance is a highlight of the film,” <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/raajneeti-film-review-29704/">stated</a> The Hollywood Reporter in its review. While his career started with novel experiments, it swayed into a genre once dominated by his father Rishi Kapoor — romance. Kapoor enjoyed a slew of critical and commercial hits in the genre — Rockstar in 2011, Barfi! in 2012, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) in 2013 that placed him well ahead of the curve from his contemporaries like Imran Khan. But most, if not all his romantic avatars appeared to be drawn from the same template — the lost, young man. And Ae Dil Hai Mushkil would have benefitted more from releasing as a music album, than a film. During this time, Kapoor’s real-life romances–actual and rumoured—caught more attention from the media than his movies. He was referring to being secretly photographed by the paparazzi with his then-girlfriend, actor Katrina Kaif, on a beach. Success ultimately came with Sanju in 2018. Kapoor played the titular character in the biopic on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Even though the whitewashed storyline let down the film, Kapoor’s performance and transformation were the talk of the town. While Indian film critic Saibal Chatterjee remarked that Kapoor “dazzled as Sanjay Dutt”, The Guardian stated, “Kapoor proves (to be) a lightweight film’s strongest suit”. Unfortunately, the hype created by Sanju well and truly died by the time Kapoor returned to the silver screen — four years later in 2022, with Brahamastra and Shamshera. Though the former raked in the collections, Kapoor’s innate magic seemed to be missing. The latter was better performed, but the muddled, slow-paced storytelling didn’t sit well with the audience. None could alter his image of a romantic hero. Perhaps Kapoor wasn’t meant for action, as advised by Dutt. Certainly, the few earlier glimpses that he provided with Besharam (2013) and Bombay Velvet (2015) left the audiences and critics unimpressed. For his upcoming films now, the actor has joined hands with directors known for delivering commercial hits —Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar by Luv Ranjan and Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The former belongs to the genre that has failed Kapoor in the recent past, and the latter is an action drama, where Kapoor is yet to deliver a hit. Only time will tell if this approach will give a much-needed boost to the 40-year-old star kid’s career, or drag him into the list of ‘has-beens’. Khan is beloved across genders and generations in India, but for women in particular he is not just a swoon-worthy movie star, but also an emblem of autonomy over their lives, careers and even romantic desires."Women relied on Shah Rukh when they found the real world and all its pandemics and practicalities inhospitable," writes author Shrayana Bhattacharya in her book, "Desperately Seeking Shah Rukh: India's Lonely Young Women and the Search for Intimacy and Independence."The book examines the desires, dreams and difficulties of a diverse group of women, who are divided by religion, caste, and class, but united by their love for Khan.According to Bhattacharya, in loving and seeking Khan, women are unknowingly indulging in a silent act of rebellion. <h2>Shah Rukh Khan is a unifying force across economic divide</h2><div type="image" title="Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol" height="4010" width="5347" msid="93971249" hostid="261" sizebytes="518724"></div>Bhattacharya noticed the unusual ally that Khan had become for women across economic strata when she was surveying home-based working women in 2006.These women grew bored of the same questions about wages, and so she began asking them about their favourite actors. The love for Khan was palpable amongst them, and it was during this time that she understood that fandom was, in fact, a unique display of economic independence. In a sociological and economic study that spanned over 15 years, Bhattacharya explored the pain and pleasure of Indian women, and how she says Khan eases the former and provides the latter. "It started as an accident, but soon I became conscious of the fact that fandom is a proxy for women's economic power and quality of life," Bhattacharya explains to Insider. "In 'Seeking Shah Rukh,' they weren't only seeking the romantic love that he embodied, but also to simply watch their favourite actor on screen." K Jeshi, a journalist from Tamil Nadu, tells Insider that she loves Khan because "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuLhbLxwSxE">he loves women </a>— the way he speaks to women, both on-screen and off-screen is beautiful."In movies such as "Kal Ho Na Ho" (2003), "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (1995), and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham" (2001), Khan weeps messily, finds himself working in the household, fasts for the woman he loves, and looks at them with awe instead of with lust. The latter is a trait that Devangi Vaishnav, a physiotherapist from Gujarat, finds particularly admirable."He has never maligned a woman's integrity. He has never been derogatory, or lascivious, even in chauvinistic scenes, there's something about his gaze that makes him honourable," Vaishnav says. Off-screen, Khan, too, appears to uphold these values. "I think the sheer regard he holds for women is admirable," says Shaheera Anwar, an entertainment journalist from Pakistan. "He retains the values that he gained from his parents. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRHeRJRo5vo">He talks about the death of his parents</a> with such profound vulnerability, in a space where being forthcoming is a rare sight, and that in return allows his audience to know and love him."Prachi Verma, a civil rights lawyer from Jaipur, says: "Women in India have to deal with plenty, be it pay disparity, domestic violence, sexual assault, lack of education, and more, so when they say they want a man like Shah Rukh, they are actually just asking for dignity in both love and labour."Zara Chowdhary, a teacher at the University of Wisconsin, was a post-production supervisor and assistant director at Red Chillies, Khan's production company, when she was given three times her salary as a bonus after the success of "Om Shanti Om.""He treats the crew on his sets with so much love and respect, that it's inspiring. He is willing to give love, to get love, which makes him who he is," Chowdhary says.Gunjan S, from Chandigarh, who runs a social-media marketing firm, adds: "He made me a dreamer, be it about success or love. South Asian women as it is, have quite a regressive upbringing, and in such space, Shah Rukh gave me an escape."<h2>How Shah Rukh Khan reflects women seeking their own agency</h2><div type="image" title="Shah Rukh Khan on the red carpet." height="1975" width="2633" msid="93971254" hostid="261" sizebytes="152282"></div>It's not all romance for these women: "The daughters don't want to marry Khan, they want to be him — they want his success, fame, and autonomy," says Bhattacharya, adding that every fan of Khan conjures up their own image of him that resembles their lives."In talking about Shah Rukh, these women were actually talking about themselves — their lives, their troubles, their aspirations, and their desire for financial and emotional autonomy," Bhattacharya continues.Khan, then, is a lexicon for women to express their own wants and needs — and Bhattacharya's book isn't so much about Khan as it is a manifesto, of sorts, for women in India tapping into their own star power.As for Khan, Bhattacharya says: "How many icons can claim to be a research method? Especially if it is about womanhood. How many men can become a language of expressing aspiration for millions of women?"

This all would change when she dropped her song "Toxic." ♪ It's dangerous ♪ ♪ I'm falling ♪ ["<keyword id="8274485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tere-Mere-Beech">Tere Mere Beech</keyword> Mein"] Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: The real story behind "Toxic" begins in 1981 in India with a blockbuster Bollywood musical. Those high-pitched strings in the score? You've heard them before, at the opening of Toxic, then repeated throughout the song. It's this musical number, "Tere Mere Beech Mein," that's the source of "Toxic"'s unmistakable hook and riff and a lot of the song's intensity. Manasi Prasad: "Tere Mere Beech Mein," it's from a classic film called "Ek Duuje Ke Liye." Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: This is Manasi Prasad, a classical Carnatic vocalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Indian music. Manasi Prasad: This song is actually based on an Indian classical rāga, or melody. It's ♪ La la la ♪ ♪ La la la la la la ♪ ♪ La la ♪ So you'll find a lot of other Indian songs which are in this rāga. It's used to convey feelings of very intense emotions. I think one of the reasons why, you know, Bollywood songs work so well is the range or the pitch of the songs tends to be really high, and it brings an intensity and a brightness. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Britney's team of songwriters, led by hit maker Cathy Dennis, took two tiny sections of the musical number and expertly merged those two sections together. ["Tere Mere Beech Mein"] ["Tere Mere Beech Mein"] ["Toxic"] Adam Ragusea: There's a string hook that's got the low, fast part, which is the ♪ Bum bum ba da da da dum ba da da dum ♪ and then there's a very high keening part that goes ♪ Da da ba ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: This is Adam Ragusea, a writer and YouTuber who's also a classically trained composer. That second part of the hook that Adam just sang? It starts on a superhigh F sharp, a note that lies far outside the song's key of C minor, making the whole thing sound disorienting. Adam Ragusea: That screaming F-sharp note makes the whole thing sound cinematic and scary in a fun way, like an action film. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: There's definitely something that sounds dangerous in that string sample. This has a lot to do with the film it was lifted from, a tale of forbidden romance. Manasi Prasad: It was a story about these star-crossed lovers. They fell in love, and it was opposed by their families, so both of them ended up dying at the end of the movie. So it's kind of a really tragic, intense love story. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: In the movie, love is danger, and that's reflected in the music, especially in the glissandos, these sliding figures in the strings, which are pretty much the signature of "Toxic"'s sampled hook. They sound slippery and precarious, which fits since Britney's singing about slipping under and falling. ♪ It's dangerous ♪ ♪ I'm falling ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Somehow, these notes sound even more treacherous when the sample's played backwards halfway through the track. Beyond the screechy orchestral parts borrowed from Bollywood, the other big source of danger in "Toxic" comes from the buzzing, ominous-sounding guitar. ♪ I'm addicted to you ♪ ♪ Don't you know that you're toxic ♪ ♪ And I love what you do ♪ ♪ Don't you know that you're toxic ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: If that guitar bit sounds kind of old-school to you, that's because it's surf, a rock subgenre that was biggest in the late '50s and early '60s, when there was a boom of interest in West Coast wave culture. Clip: Surfing! [surf guitar] Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: Surf guitar is played in a way that conjures up the sounds and feel of surfing with a hard and fast picking style and loud, wet-sounding reverb. ♪ Never been ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: If surf's supposed to capture the carefree California ethos, you might be wondering why the guitar in "Toxic" has very much the opposite feel. That deep, low guitar tone sounds suspenseful in a way that matches the adrenaline rush of the Bollywood strings. That's probably because you identify that twangy guitar with something else entirely, one of the most recognizable movie themes in the world. ["James Bond Theme"] Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: The first-ever Bond film, "Dr. No," came out in 1962, right in surf rock's heyday. So it's not surprising that its title song, which would set the template for all later Bond themes, was fueled by surf. The 007 theme had an outsized influence on the music of all the Cold War spy films and TV series that followed it. ["Secret Agent Man"] ♪ There's a man who leads a life of danger ♪ Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: By now, the tone of guitar that you hear in "Toxic" has big spy connotations, and the song's Bond-inspired music video seems to be a nod to this connection. OK, so we've got the aggressive twang of the surf guitar evoking the reckless daring of a special agent and frantically sliding Bollywood strings capturing the rush of a risky love affair. How is it that these two disparate sounds from opposite sides of the globe seem to have such an affinity for each other? Turns out, they share some of the same musical DNA. Monty Norman, the film composer who penned the 007 theme, lifted its melody from a previous piece he'd written for a play adaptation of "A House for Mr. Biswas," VS Naipaul's novel about Indian immigrants. Basically, the sound that has come to define spy music was in fact born of Indian music. Adam Ragusea: And so, when we hear those two aesthetics put together in "Toxic," it feels really natural to us. Meredith Geaghan-Breiner: "Toxic" distills some of the most thrilling sounds of global cinema into a three-minute pop masterpiece. What other club banger combines Bond and Bollywood so perfectly and remains a DJ staple 15 years on?
