The Jammu and Kashmir government has banned the entry of poultry into the <keyword id="6356438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-territory">union territory</keyword> following the outbreak of <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> in neighbouring Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The ban was announced on Thursday and comes into effect from Friday. An order issued by Navin K. Choudhary, principal secretary, agriculture and animal husbandry department, said, "In the wake of spread of bird flu in neighbouring states of J&amp;K as a measure of abundant precaution and in view of the declaration of whole J&amp;K as 'controlled area' for bird flu disease, government of UT of J&amp;K imposes complete ban on import of live birds, including poultry and unprocessed poultry meat for any purpose into the union territory of J&amp;K with immediate effect till 14-01-2021." Authorities have already said that so far there was no reported incident of bird death due to bird flu in the union territory. Meanwhile, there are reports of scores of crows dying in Rajouri district. The authorities said they have collected samples to ascertain whether these deaths are related to bird flu or not. Another red herring in this regard is that J&amp;K plays host to thousands of migratory birds each winter and the spread of bird flu is primarily attributed to these migratory birds. The wildlife department has, however, asserted that so far there were no reports of bird flu in nearly half a dozen bird sanctuaries in the union territory. --IANS sq/dpb

<keyword id="6357972" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jammu">Jammu</keyword>, The Udhampur and <keyword id="44760" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poonch">Poonch</keyword> districts of Jammu region have reported their first cases of <keyword id="109029" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="avian-influenza">avian influenza</keyword> as <keyword id="52071" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samples">samples</keyword> taken from three dead birds tested <keyword id="6439681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="positive">positive</keyword> for the disease, prompting precautionary measures including the culling process, a senior official said Sunday. The Deputy Director (Poultry and Research) of the Animal Husbandry Department, Jammu, D D Dogra said while samples from a peacock and a domestic fowl have returned positive for H1N8 from Juganu block in Udhampur, a wild crow was tested positive for H5N1 from Mandi area of Poonch. "These are the first positive cases in Jammu region but there is no need to panic as majority of the test reports are negative," he told . Dogra said the department had so far collected and dispatched 218 samples for testing at Jalandhar in Punjab. Barring the three positive reports from Udhampur and Poonch, which were cross-checked from the Bhopal laboratory, 115 reports came negative while the result of rest of the cases is awaited, he said. He said the department has taken necessary measures in accordance with the government guidelines to prevent the spread of the infection. "Since a domestic fowl and a peacock were tested positive for <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> in Udhampur, we have started culling of the birds in one km and active surveillance in 1-10 km radius," Dogra said, adding people have also been informed about the precautionary measures need to be taken to effectively deal with the situation. He said the department had taken 40 samples from vehicles carrying poultry birds to Jammu and Kashmir at Lakhanpur entry point and all the reports came negative. "We have also dispatched several samples of birds which were found dead in Bathindi area of Jammu recently. These too came negative," he said, adding usually it takes a week for a sample to get tested at Jhalandar laboratory but those tested positive are being cross-checked at Bhopal lab. After the positive report of a dead crow in Mandi, Poonch district authorities said samples of all sales points and backyard poultry shall be taken within one kilometer and regular surveillance maintained by the Animal Husbandry Department. "No sample of domestic poultry bird tested positive so far," an official said. On January 5, Jammu and Kashmir sounded an alert and started collecting samples of birds across the <keyword id="6356438" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-territory">Union Territory</keyword> after neighboring Himachal Pradesh reported cases of bird flu. First cases of avian influenza detected in Jammu's Udhampur and Poonch

New Delhi, After the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the country's <keyword id="667218" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="poultry-industry">poultry industry</keyword>, it is now reeling under the fresh threat of the bird flu infection. Due to the fear of bird flu, the <keyword id="6371194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sale">sale</keyword> of chicken and chicken products have been the worst-hit. Especially in north India, the poultry industry has been badly affected by ban on the transportation of hens from one state to another. A delegation from the industry is scheduled to meet the central government on Sunday. The cases of bird flu in <keyword id="7494630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="poultry-chickens">poultry chickens</keyword> have so far been found only in Haryana while most of them have been found in wild birds or migratory birds elsewhere and some cases have also been found in poultry ducks. However, in the beginning of 2021, the fear of bird flu has increased so much that the demand of chickens and chicken products has decreased by more than 70%, the poultry traders said. Poultry Federation of India President, Ramesh Khatri, told that chicken sales had fallen by almost 70 to 80% over the last three to four days, while prices had fallen by 50% and egg prices had also come down by nearly 15 to 20%. Khatri said the primary reason for the falling demand for chicken is that the movement of poultry from Punjab, Haryana, <keyword id="6358126" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>, Delhi and <keyword id="23412" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> has been halted from one state to another. He said that the two farms in which the bird flu has been confirmed in Haryana are both layer farms and not broiler ones. In the layer farms, poultry farming is done for eggs, while in the broiler farms, poultry farming is done for chicken meat. He said he would demand from the central government to save the poultry industry from rumour-mongering of bird flu. A delegation from the poultry industry on Sunday would meet Union Minister Jitendra Singh in which Ramesh Khatri would also be present. Poultry farm operator, Rakesh Manhas, also said he would urge the Central government that the rumours spread about bird flu causes humongous loss to the industry so measures should be taken to prevent such a situation. The Union Animal Husbandry Ministry also said in the seven states where there were confirmed cases of bird flu on Saturday, only the reports of bird flu in poultry-chickens in Haryana has been confirmed. He said that there is a need to maintain cleanliness and hygiene and the cooking and processing standards are also effective to prevent the spread of AI virus. Agricultural economist and Poultry Federation of India advisor, Vijay Sardana, said the country's poultry industry is worth nearly ₹1.25 lakh crore, which has drastically come down to half during the corona pandemic crisis. This means the business of the poultry industry which was nearly ₹1.25 lakh crore before the disaster of coronavirus has reduced to nearly ₹60,000 to 70,000 crore at present. The recovery of the poultry industry came in the last few days of 2020, which was earlier ravaged by coronavirus, but is now reeling under the threat of bird flu. Poultry industry badly effected by bird flu fears, chicken prices drop by 50%

Meanwhile, the 18th edition of the Indo-US joint training exercise "Yudh Abhyas 22" commenced in Uttarakhand's Auli on Saturday. Exercise Yudh Abhyas is conducted annually between India and US with the aim of exchanging best practices, Tactics, Techniques and Procedures between the Armies of the two nations. The previous edition of the exercise was conducted at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska (US) in October 2021. <keyword id="57857" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-army" source="Orion">US Army</keyword> soldiers of the 2nd Brigade of the 11th Airborne Division and Indian Army soldiers from the ASSAM Regiment are participating in the exercise. The scope of the Field Training Exercise includes the validation of integrated battle groups, force multipliers, establishment and functioning of surveillance grids, validation of operational logistics, mountain warfare skills, casualty evacuation and combat medical aid in adverse terrain and climatic conditions. According to the Army, the joint exercise focuses on deploying an infantry battalion group in peacekeeping and disaster relief operations under the mandate of the US. The Yudh Abhyas is a 15-day-long exercise that will focus on high altitude and extremely cold climate warfare.
