New Delhi, <keyword id="6354287" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> CEO Gopal Vittal on Wednesday wished better days for rival Vodafone <keyword id="41511" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idea">Idea</keyword>, saying the company's existence is critical for India to remain a three-private player market that could bring investments, prevent job losses and restore the reputation of the struggling industry. "I think Vodafone Idea will remain and I wish it thrives... it is important that India remains a three-player market as that is good from all perspectives, (as in), investments, jobs and reputation," Vittal said on a post-earnings call Airtel reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 1,035 crore in the December quarter, stung by one-time expenses relating to statutory dues and write-downs on 3G gear, besides higher finance costs. But its India mobile services business continued to grow, with ARPUs up 5.3 per cent sequentially at Rs 135. On Wednesday, <keyword id="137231" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-group">Vodafone Group</keyword> Plc head Nick Read once again stressed the critical state of Vodafone Idea, and said the UK major would not inject any fresh capital into its Indian telecom JV with the <keyword id="44373" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla Group</keyword> and the outlook on the JV is "very critical". On the implications for Airtel, if Vodafone Idea shuts down, the Airtel CEO said that the matter would hinge on how the Supreme Court responds to the telcos' plea for negotiating the terms of AGR-related payments with the government. Vittal also said the company would not bid at the current prices in 5G spectrum auction. "The reserve price on the spectrum that is being put on the block which TRAI recommended... we have to see what the government does, but what TRAI had recommended on the 3.5 gigahertz band is close to Rs 49,000 or 50,000 crore for 100 megahertz of spectrum ... 5G requires large blocks of spectrum, as you know. So at 100 megahertz, Rs 50,000 crore is just something that we can't afford and it's... we believe it's too high priced. So we will not pick it up at those prices." The CEO told the analysts that ARPUs need to grow to at least Rs 300 (from current levels) to ensure "reasonable return on capital," saying that even if ARPU rises to Rs 200, post the last tariff revision (in December 2019) in the fiscal fourth quarter, "it would barely be head above water in terms of return on capital employed as tariffs remain exorbitantly low". However, according to a CLSA report, Airtel's average revenue per user might jump to only ₹181 by the end of FY 2022 at a compounded annual growth rate of 19%. "Such ARPU stabilisation would hinge on the quantum of 2G users naturally going to 4G, acceleration in the postpaid (user base) and a material change in tariffs". Airtel's strong 4G customer adds were partly a result of <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>'s decision last October to charge users for voice calls to other telco networks, Vittal said, adding that "the move led to a surge of customers consolidating the second SIM and switching to Airtel". The company added 21 million 4G users in Q3. "We believe that industry ARPU needs to move to Rs 300 in the long term, this will provide the right balance between customer escalation and sector investments. The ARPU announcement on the back of tariff hikes, data net and overall upgrading of customers ensure that we continued the sequential revenue growth trend that we have been witnessing in the past few quarters. This quarter there has been a reporting change on account of reorganization of our optic fibre operations, which have been transferred to a wholly-owned subsidiary, he said. Vittal declined to comment on the timing of the next round of price hikes, but said they would "reassess whether the market can absorb another increase in FY21 as the situation is an evolving one". Bharti Airtel's CEO wants Vodafone-Idea to survive and stay on

The <keyword id="189426" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gsma" source="Orion">GSMA</keyword>, a global organisation that represents mobile network operators worldwide, on Monday elected Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> as Deputy Chair among the newly-elected members, for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2023. Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete Lopez, CEO of Telefonica Group, will continue to be the Chair at the GSMA, the organisation said in a statement. There are 26 members of the GSMA Board. including senior representatives from global mobile operators as well as smaller independent operators. "The industry is at a pivotal point at the moment. It is more important than ever that we work together to ensure that the true potential of the mobile ecosystem benefits people, businesses and society as a whole", said Mats Granryd, GSMA Director General. Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal appointed Deputy Chair by GSMA

<ul><li>Bharti Airtel has officially launched its Security Intelligence Centre to protect enterprises from cyberthreats.</li><li>The company’s CEO Gopal Vittal claims that it took around ₹100 crore of investment and over a year to set up. </li><li>Vittal also revealed that the company already has 20 paying customers using the new platform and is hoping that the commercial launch will bring in more clients. </li></ul>To address the growing threat of cyber attacks on data and information, Bharti Airtel has now launched a new cybersecurity product called <keyword id="4644317" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-Secure">Airtel Secure</keyword> for enterprises. It operates out of the Airtel Security Intelligence Centre set up in Manesar. According to Bharti Airtel’s CEO Gopal Vittal, the hub took an investment of over ₹100 crore and over a year to set up. But it’s a small price to pay for a piece of the cybersecurity market that is estimated to grow to $13 to $15 billion over the next five years. “We already have a couple of large companies who are already using our Security Intelligence Centre. We’re starting to bundle it for small and medium enterprises as well,” said Vittal, citing that around 20 paying customers already live on the product. The Government of India is also one of the potential customers with it already working hand-in-hand with the National Security Advisor (NSA). Vittal highlighted that there’s a team of over 500 cybersecurity experts behind the ‘integrated and automated’ facility. Bharti Airtel picks up a 25% stake in Bengaluru-based tech startup Lavelle Networks

Acquiring financial solutions firm <keyword id="2982350" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="YTS-Solutions">YTS Solutions</keyword> for an undisclosed amount, <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> announced appointment of YTS Solutions’ co-founder <keyword id="250701" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manish-Khera">Manish Khera</keyword> as CEO of Airtel M Commerce Services, which offers Airtel's flagship semi-closed wallet under the brand name 'Airtel Money'. 

	Both Airtel and YTS Solutions in separate statements said that business of YTS Solutions will be integrated with AMSL. 
 "The acquired business will be integrated with the operations of <keyword id="2982464" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel-Money-Services-Ltd">Airtel Money Services Ltd</keyword>," YTS Solutions said. 

	Based out of Mumbai, YTS has been developing financial products focused on mass market and micro-transactions. 
 

	"This acquisition will expand Airtel's portfolio in the mobile commerce segment and bring in a host of new product capabilities targeted at migrants in urban cities and their families in rural towns and villages," Airtel said in a statement. 
 

	Khera succeeds Govind Rajan who resigned from the firm to join e-commerce company Snapdeal as its Chief Strategy Officer. 
 

	After appointment, Khera will be a part of the Airtel Management Board and report to Bharti Airtel, India and South Asia, MD and CEO Gopal Vittal. 
 

	Prior to founding YTS, Khera was MD and CEO of FINO Pay Tech Ltd, and earlier worked in ICICI Bank. 
 

	"I am delighted to announce that Manish Khera will join AMSL as Chief Executive Officer. A trend-setter in the domain areas of financial inclusion, payments and banking, Manish combines the spirit of entrepreneurship with a passion for technology and commitment to serve millions," Vittal said. 
 

	In 2011, AMSL announced the launch of Airtel Money and in January 2015, it applied for a Payments' Bank Licence.

Bharti Airtel acquiresYTS Solutions: Deal will boost wallet services

New Delhi, Feb 4 () Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Tuesday posted a consolidated loss of Rs 1,035 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2019.
The company had recorded a profit of Rs 86 crore a year ago.
The company's revenue, however, increased by 8.5 per cent to Rs 21,947 crore for December quarter compared to Rs 20,231 crore in the same period last year.
"While tariff revision undertaken in December 2019 is a welcome step towards repairing the financial health of the industry, we believe tariffs must go up further for enabling the industry to invest in emerging technologies," Gopal Vittal, MD and CEO, India &amp; South Asia, Bharti Airtel said in a statement.
Bharti Airtel India revenue rose seven per cent to 15,797 crore, compared to the same period of 2018-19.
For the second quarter ended September 2019, Bharti Airtel had posted its highest ever net loss of 23,045 crore after provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore on account of the Supreme Court ruling on statutory dues. PRS MBI

Bharti Airtel posts Rs 1,035 cr loss in Q3 FY20

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, who is on his maiden visit to India, is expected to meet top telcos to build partnerships for the distribution and sale of Apple devices. 
 
As per sources, Cook believes that India's widening 4G network will not only boost the sales of iPhones in the country, but would also be beneficial for the sales of iPads and Apple TV. 
 
With India’s biggest mobile operator Bharti Airtel already offering 4G services and Reliance Jio Infocomm planning to roll out nationwide commercial 4G services by the end of this year, these two companies are pivotal for Apple's iPhone strategy. 
 
A senior Bharti Airtel executive told ET that Apple and Airtel are in talks for a broader strategic tie-up, including options like distribution or selling through retail stores, offers on devices and personnel training. 
 
There would be several proposals laid down on the table, and the one that works best for India would be decided upon by both companies. 
 <keyword id="6358599" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunil-Mittal">Sunil Mittal</keyword>, chairman of Bharti Airtel, is supposed to meet Cook on Friday. Other than this, the Apple CEO is also going to meet Tata Group Chairman Cyrus Mistry, Vodafone India CEO <keyword id="958297" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sunil-Sood">Sunil Sood</keyword> and Tata Consultancy Services CEO NChandrasekaran. 
 
In the past, Cook has said that iPhone sales will significantly improve in India once high-speed 4G networks gain tractions. 
 
"The thing that (has) held not only us back, perhaps but some others as well, is that the LTE rollout in India just really began this year, and so we'll begin to see some really good networks coming on in India," Cook had said in a conference call last month. 
 
"That will unleash the power and capability of the iPhone in a way that an older network, a 2.5G, or even some 3G networks, would not do," he added.

Mobile operator <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> is handing out free high-speed data to its postpaid subscribers for the next three months to counter aggressive offerings by newcomer Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>. <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> is offering up to 30 GB of free data for the next three months for postpaid subscribers logging onto the 'My Airtel' app by April 30. For those who have already availed a similar offer by the company last month, 10 GB free data (one month validity) will be up for grabs, a company spokesperson said. "Now enjoy some free data every month for the next three months...That should cover any long vacation you may have planned," Bharti Airtel CEO <keyword id="521074" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gopal-Vittal">Gopal Vittal</keyword> said in an email to subscribers. In addition, Airtel has said that it will offer the value to customers who have not activated the right international roaming pack, before their travel abroad. Citing an example, Airtel said if a subscriber has not activated a pack before travelling abroad and in case the daily usage exceeds Rs 499, Airtel will automatically activate the Rs 499 pack (that includes unlimited incoming calls, free data, SMS) at no added cost. If the usage charges are less than Rs 499, the users will only be charged on the rates that are applicable, the email added. Airtel said the move will protect consumers from bill shocks while travelling abroad. The company is sending out mails in batches to inform all its postpaid customers about the offers. Over the last few months, Reliance Jio's disruptive positioning in the markhas forced other operators to respond with generous counter-offers to retain customers, turning up the competitive heat in a market of over 1.12 billion mobile subscribers. Jio, which debuted last year with free data and voice offering, now has 72 million paid subscribers (as on March 31, 2017).

Scared of Jio: Airtel rolls out free high-speed data for postpaid consumer

Forget voice and data offerings, Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> and <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> have extended their pricing wars in the <keyword id="17591" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Broadband">broadband</keyword> space now, with the former offering up to double the high-speed data benefits for the same price. Airtel’s move comes ahead of Jio's commercial launch of JioFiber, which is expected to start commercially in June. "We believe these new plans will also drive the adoption of high-speed broadband in the country,” said Hemanth Kumar Guruswamy, CEO - Homes, Bharti Airtel (India). Airtel had 1.96 million broadband customers as of March 31. In a bid to give tough fight to Jio-Fiber, Airtel will offer speeds of up to 1 GB per second. Airtel also launched 'V-Fiber' services that allow its copper-based fixed-line network to offer up to 100 Mbps to homes. V-Fiber is available where Airtel doesn't have the fibre to offer broadband services. Airtel said fixed broadband will also enable <keyword id="970768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-of-things">Internet of Things</keyword> services for homes with connected appliances and more in the near future. The telco said its Rs 899 plan will now offer 60 GB highspeed data compared with 30 GB earlier, while the Rs 1,099 plan will offer 90 GB instead of 50 GB.

Bharti Airtel announced a multi-year agreement to deploy Nokia's Single Radio Access Network (SRAN) solution across nine circles in India, helping the telcos to enhance the network capacity of its networks, in particular 4G, and improve customer experience. According to sources the deal size is around Rs 7,500 crore. "The rollout, which will also lay the foundation for providing 5G connectivity in the future, will see approximately 3,00,000 radio units deployed across several spectrum bands, including 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz, 2100 Mhz and 2300 Mhz, and is expected to be completed by 2022," Bharti Airtel said in a statement. This is the first network expansion deal of the year and during the lockdown period, when demand for high speed data has increased by about 20 per cent at pan-India level. "We are committed to continuously invest in emerging network technologies to provide a best-in-class experience to our customers. This initiative with Nokia is a major step in this direction. "We have been working with Nokia for more than a decade now and are delighted to use Nokia's SRAN products in further improving the capacity and coverage of our network as we prepare for the 5G era," Gopal Vittal, MD &amp; CEO (India and South Asia) at Bharti Airtel, said. The deal includes network expansion in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and UP East. These circles jointly account for more than half of Bharti Airtel subscribers and the deal consolidates Nokia as lead network vendor for the Sunil Bharti Mittal led firm. "This is an important agreement for the future of connectivity in one of the world's largest telecom markets and solidifies our position in India. We have worked closely with Bharti Airtel for many years and are delighted to extend this long-standing partnership further. "This project will enhance their current networks and deliver best-in-class connectivity to Airtel customers but also lay the foundations for 5G services in the future," Rajeev Suri, President and Chief Executive Officer at Nokia said. According to global telecom body GSMA, India is the second largest telecom market in the world and is expected to reach 92 crore unique mobile customers by 2025, which will also include 8.8 crore 5G connections. Nokia's MBiT Index 2020 found a massive increase in demand for data services with traffic increasing by 47 per cent in 2019 alone. Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra to co-develop and market 5G use cases in India

<keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has rolled out 4G trials in Delhi NCR and offered free upgrade from 3G to 4G. 
 
The company has expanded its 4G facility to Karnal and Yamunanagar in Haryana. The company wants customers to be a part of the trial and offer feedback. 
 
Sarang Kanade, CEO, Delhi NCR and Rajasthan, Bharti Airtel said, "Customers in the region will be uniquely positioned to experience India's first integrated FD and TD 4G network, implying faster 4G speeds and wider network coverage." 
 
"As customers in India show an increasing propensity for consuming data services, we at Airtel are excited to take the lead in introducing the market to power of blazing 4G speeds," he adds. 
 
The company is looking to expand its 4G base in light of Reliance Jio's 4G launch timed for December. 4G trials have been launched for existing Airtel customers in Hyderabad, Vizag, Chennai, Coimbatore and Mumbai. 
 
Existing Airtel users can activate 4G with a quick SMS registration while non-Airtel customers buying 4G enabled mobile devices can follow a process to join the 4G network. 
 
Airtel launched the country’s first 4G services in Kolkata in April 2012. The service is now available across India including Bengaluru, Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mangaluru, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Kapurthala, Moga, Bathinda Patiala and recently launched Ambala (City and Cantt.).
