Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Norms for the vehicles operated on the Indian roads was announced for the first time two decades back. These are considered the benchmarks in regulating how much pollutants the automobiles release in the air. BS VI refers to the sixth stage of the Bharat Stage Emission norms that will come into effect from 1 April 2020. The BS emission norms are based on the European emission norms and implement strict control over the emissions from vehicles. BS I was introduced in 2000 by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This was followed by BS II in the year 2005, BS III in 2010 and BS IV in 2017. However, the wide spread alarms raised over the highly deteriorating condition of air pollution in the country has forced the government to skip the BS V and move straight away to BS VI. About BS VI (BS 6) Norms Referred to as the VI stage of Bharat Stage Emission norms, the main difference between the BS IV and the <keyword id="3165424" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BS-VI-norms">BS VI norms</keyword> is the amount of sulphur content in the emissions. While BS IV compliant vehicles release 50 ppm (parts per million) sulphur, the BS VI compliant vehicles will only release 10 ppm sulphur. Also for the light duty diesel vehicles, the BS VI norms cut down the oxides of nitrogen emission limits. In case of light duty petrol vehicles, the emission of oxides of nitrogen are reduced by about 25 percent. In case of light duty diesel vehicles, BS VI has also introduced heightened particulate matter (PM) emission standard placing an upper limit of 6 X 1011 /km. For the light duty gasoline vehicles, the PM and PN limits have been specified as part of BS VI while they are applied only in case of vehicles that are reported with direct injection <keyword id="240487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engines">engines</keyword>. BS VI also comes with a critical change in the approval procedures for light duty vehicles. It has mandated that portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) be used for the purpose of in-service commission testing. This will help ensure the emissions performance recorded during the laboratory testing is also maintained during the real world driving conditions. Implementation of BS VI in India In 2018 October, the Supreme Court banned the sales of BS IV vehicles which should never be seen in the market from April 1, 2020. The Supreme Court has also said strictly that there will not be any grace time given to the vehicle manufacturers to sell the vehicles that are not in compliance with the BS VI norms after this deadline. So we can say the BS VI norms will take effect from April 1, 2020. In order to comply with the BS VI norms, the vehicle manufacturers need to invest in technology that will let them upgrade the vehicle they already have with them in stock. Also, they will have to move to the new technology to make the new vehicles in compliant with the BS VI standards.

What are BS VI Norms?

As per the Supreme Court Order, Indian market will see only the sale of BS VI compliant vehicles from April 1, 2020. These new emission control standards being introduced in India will need widespread measures in terms of emission control, automotive electronics, fuel-grade and ECU changes. While the Bharat Stage Emission norms mainly focus on minimizing the pollutant emissions from the vehicles run on the Indian roads, the standards of the VI stage of these norms coming under the title BS VI will call for a drastic change in the technology adopted by the India vehicle manufacturers. The implications of BS VI norms Once these norms come into effect, the emission levels in India will come on par with the emissions standards in the European countries and the US. This also marks a major advancement in the vehicle manufacturing technology in India which will match with the other advanced automotive technologies seen across the globe. Bharat Stage VI norms will demand a host of technology modifications the most important one being the implementation of OBD (on-board diagnostics) a mandatory feature for all the vehicles. The need for India to move to the BSIV to BS VI norms India is a vast country with 10 highly populated cities. This is a qualification that we might not feel happy to boast of considering the alarming amount of pollutants the vehicles of the country release on the Indian roads. In the Indian cities, the vehicular emissions are major contributors to the worsening of air quality. Studies show that the release of NOx, SO2, CO2 and other particulate matters take a toll on the health of Indians. For instance, the PM2.5 levels in a city like Delhi is 6 times more than what is allowed by the WHO. Following the Paris Climate Agreement signed by India in 2016, India has taken the responsibility to cut down its carbon footprint by 35-55% within the next 12 years from what was recorded in 2005. These carbon footprint obligations have forced the country to move directly to BS VI norms bypassing the BS V norms. The BS VI norms will see the NOx emissions come down by 25% approximately in case of petrol engines and 68% in case of diesel engines. The PM emissions for diesel engines will come down by 80%. Technology changes that BS VI demand The OEMs cannot just add some additional components in the manufactured vehicles to reduce the emissions. If Euro VI compliant DPF needs to be fitted in a small diesel car made in India, the bonnet size will have to increase by exceeding the 4 meters mark. In case of natively developed OEMs like Mahindra and TATA, the new standards will have to be implemented in their line of vehicles with utmost perfection. Since this technology has to be multiplied over hundreds of platforms, the challenge seems to be higher. In order to control the PM and NOx emissions, the OEMs will need to implement various kinds of technologies like fitting Diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the vehicles to expel particulate matters from the gas exhausted. For reducing the NOx emission, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and <keyword id="854698" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="exhaust-gas-recirculation">exhaust gas recirculation</keyword> (EGR) need to be used.

Indore, Jan 27 () The country's automobile industry will gather pace by July-August this year, a top official at Tata Motors said, attributing the current temporary slowdown to issues like consumers facing problems in securing vehicle loan and the companies shifting to BS-VI emission norms as mandated by the government. 
"The sluggishness of the vehicle market in the country is going to be short-lived.
We hope that sales of passenger vehicles will record pace by July-August before the festive season," Tata Motors president (passenger vehicles business unit), Mayank Pareek, told reporters after launching the company's new car Altroz in Madhya Pradesh.
He hoped that the vehicle market would grow due to the continuous expansion of infrastructure in the country and the increasing population of young professionals.
Pareek said that about 74 per cent of customers in the country buy cars by taking loans from banks.
But for the last 12 to 18 months, customers are facing difficulties in getting vehicle loans from banks.
Besides, he said that due to the emission standard change from BS-IV to BS-VI, there has been a slight slowdown in the entire motor vehicle industry as all the vehicle manufacturers are currently finishing their old stock of BS-IV class vehicles.
Sharing details of Tata Motors' position in this regard, Pareek said, "We have exhausted stock of BS-IV class vehicles in our factories in the first nine months (April-December) of the ongoing financial year.
The company hopes that by February 1, the stock of vehicles in this category will be reduced to less than 5,000 units with Tata's dealers.
"It is to be noted that as per the Supreme Court's decision to reduce environmental pollution, Bharat Stage (BS)-VI emission standards are going to be implemented from April 1 and new vehicles will be sold in the country as per this standard only.

Daimler has ambitious plans to run one of its largest factories entirely on renewable energy by 2018

Hyundai to pass BS-VI upgrading cost to consumers in phases

Mumbai, Dec 23 () Suzuki Motorcycle India on Monday announced it will roll out the BS VI-compliant models of its vehicles from next month, with all-new Suzuki Access 125 scooter set to be the first offering to be launched under the new emission norms.
 The domestic automobile industry has to switch cover to Bharat Stage (BS) VI emission regulations from April next year, replacing the existing BSIV norms, 
 Suzuki Motorcycle's top-selling scooter, Access 125, will be the first product to be rolled out as part of the new emission norms from the Indian subsidiary's portfolio, the company said in a release.
 "We are thrilled to announce our first BS6 product way ahead of the regulation enforcement deadline of April 1. For more than a decade now, Suzuki Access 125 has been among the segment's top-selling scooter. The all-new Access 125 comes loaded with new features," said Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India.
 The BSVI-compliant Suzuki Access 125 will be launched in India soon, the company said in the release.
 The new scooter will come with new key features such as eco assist illumination, fuel injection engine, external fuel filling lid and LED headlamp.
 Besides, the new special edition model will offer standard USB DC socket for charging mobile phones on the go, the company said.
 The scooter is also equipped with Combined Brake System (CBS), which enables to operate both brakes only by left lever, it added. IAS MKJ

Suzuki Motorcycle to roll out BS-VI models from Jan, Access 125 to be first offering

However, defence vehicles were given an exception from BS IV norms in 2016 and this could be repeated again. “They have conveyed that it will be difficult to procure new vehicles till 2019 and have said that the dispensation given to the army should also be given to paramilitary vehicles because their operational areas are also similar,” according to an official. Global Norms Military vehicles in all the countries are exempted from stringent pollution control rules, “This is in part due to difficulty in assuring ultra-low sulphur fuel (10 parts per million) supply in all of the remote areas where a military vehicle might operate,” Anup Bandivadekar, passenger vehicles programme director, International Council on Clean Transportation <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">told Hindustan Times</a>. Armed forces might get an exemption from new vehicular emission norms

New Delhi, Mar 31 () The Centre on Tuesday asked states to ensure compliance of the Supreme Court's order on registration and sale of BS-IV vehicles. The apex court had last week allowed the sale of BS-IV vehicles for 10 days, except in Delhi-NCR, after the ongoing countrywide lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic is lifted. The court, which had earlier fixed the deadline of March 31, 2020 for sale of BS-IV vehicles across the country, had passed the order on a plea by Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) seeking extension of time for clearing inventory amid the coronavirus outbreak and economic slowdown. "The respective Transport Department of the concerned state/UTs would ensure meticulous compliance of the Supreme Court order," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a letter to states. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Deepak Gupta, which heard the matter on Friday through video-conferencing, made it clear that no BS-IV vehicles will be sold in Delhi-NCR from April 1, 2020. It had said that only 10 per cent of the unsold inventory of BS-IV vehicles can be permitted to be sold during this 10-day period after the lockdown, which has been enforced since March 24. Bharat Stage (BS) emission norms are standards instituted by the government to regulate output of air pollutants from motor vehicles. The BS-IV norms have been enforced across the country since April 2017. India has decided to switch to the world's cleanest petrol and diesel from April 1 as it leapfrogs straight to Euro-VI emission compliant fuels from Euro-IV grades now -- a feat achieved in just three years and not seen in any of the large economies around the globe. Unlike LCD, OLED does not require a backlight unit since it uses self-lighting pixels. LG's OLED display becomes the first to receive an eye protection certification

Overall output in India will be down 15% while that of small cars will down to half in July compared to a month earlier, Maruti said. Maruti’s shares fell 4.8%, shedding ₹7,000 crore in market value on Monday. “In view of the current sales environment, we lower our estimates for India domestic sales to +0.2% for FY2019 (from +5.4%) and +3.7% for FY2020 (+6.4%),” JPMorgan said in a report. This will be a debilitating blow for Suzuki for whom India makes for <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/maruti-continues-to-drive-suzukis-global-growth-story/articleshow/67860711.cms?from=mdr">over half of all its global sale volumes</a>. All Indian car makers put together saw a decline in sales of 18.8% in June, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/june-monthly-car-sales-data-points-to-a-severe-slowdown-in-india/articleshow/69985355.cms">seventh straight monthly fall in car sales</a>, and the worst in 18 years, as per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). New Delhi, Feb 13 () Ratings agency ICRA on Thursday said the proposed Bharat Trem IV emission norms for domestic tractor industry slated to be implemented from October is unlikely to create major headwinds for the sector. The new emission norms will only be applicable for tractors with capacity above 50HP (horse power), which accounts for only 13 per cent of the industry sales in unit terms and hence the less likelihood of the new emission norms becoming a major hurdle for the industry, ICRA Ratings said in a statement. The rest of the industry, i.e. tractors below 50HP, will migrate to the new norms only from October 2023. ICRA Ltd AVP, Corporate Sector Ratings Rohan Gupta said, although major technological changes, including both engine and after treatment technologies are required to migrate to Bharat Trem IV, the technological know is readily available with OEMs (original equipment manufacturer) as they are already exporting to various countries meeting evolved emission norms guidelines. "However, the pass through of the incremental cost, related to the technological changes, to the farmers is likely to prove to be a challenge, given the price sensitive nature of the farming community," he added. While OEMs are yet to announce revised prices for tractors complying with the new emission norms, he said there could be an increase of around 10-12 per cent in price. A complete pass through of the increased prices would be unlikely and the same could constrain profitability indicators of tractor OEMs to an extent, Gupta added. The tractor industry across all HP categories in India currently complies with TREM III A emission norms, which were implemented back in April 2010 and April 2011 in a phased-wise manner. The evolution to new norms is in line with the broader automobile industry in India which will be migrating to Bharat State (BS-VI) emission norms from April 2020. "Overall, given that the proposed evolution to Bharat Trem IV is restricted to only the high HP segment, the impact of the proposed emission norms evolution on the demand in the industry is likely to be much lower than the disruption seen across other automobile segments,' ICRA said. OEMs are also expected to make an effort to rejig their portfolio to an extent through launch of products under new HP categories with a view of limiting the impact of the same, it added. RKL SHWSHW

New Delhi, Feb 19 () India will switch to the world's cleanest petrol and diesel from April 1 as it leapfrogs straight to Euro-VI emission compliant fuels from Euro-IV grades now - a feat achieved in just three years and not seen in any of the large economies around the globe.India will join the select league of nations using petrol and diesel containing just 10 parts per million of sulphur as it looks to cut vehicular emissions that are said to be one of the reasons for the choking pollution in major cities.Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC) - the firm that controls roughly half of the country's fuel market, said almost all refineries began producing ultra-low sulphur BS-VI (equivalent to Euro-VI grade) petrol and diesel by the end of 2019 and oil companies have now undertaken the tedious task of replacing every drop of fuel in the country with the new one."We are absolutely on track for supplying BS-VI fuel from April 1. Almost all refineries have begun supplying BS-VI fuel and the same has reached storage depots across the country," he said. From storage depots, the fuel has started travelling to petrol pumps and in the next few weeks all of them will only have BS-VI grade petrol and diesel, he said. "We are 100 per cent confident that fuel that will flow from nozzles at all the petrol pumps in the country on April 1 will be BS-VI emission compliant fuel." India adopted Euro-III equivalent (or Bharat Stage-III) fuel with a sulphur content of 350 ppm in 2010 and then took seven years to move to BS-IV that had a sulphur content of 50 ppm. From BS-IV to BS-VI it took just three years. "It was a conscious decision to leapfrog to BS-VI as first upgrading to BS-V and then shifting to BS-VI would have prolonged the journey to 4 to 6 years. Besides, oil refineries, as well as automobile manufacturers, would have had to make investments twice - first to producing BS-V grade fuel and engines and then BS-VI ones," he said. State-owned oil refineries spent about Rs 35,000 crore to upgrade plants that could produce ultra-low sulphur fuel. This investment is on top of Rs 60,000 crore they spent on refinery upgrades in the previous switchovers. BS-VI has a sulphur content of just 10 ppm and emission standards are as good as CNG. Originally, Delhi and its adjoining towns were to have BS-VI fuel supplies by April 2019 and the rest of the country was to get same supplies from April 2020. But oil marketing companies switched over to supply of BS-VI grade fuels in the national capital territory of Delhi on April 1, 2018. The supply of BS-VI fuels was further extended to four contiguous districts of Rajasthan and eight of Uttar Pradesh in the National Capital Region (NCR) on April 1, 2019, together with the city of Agra. BS-VI grade fuels were made available in 7 districts of Haryana from October 1, 2019. Singh said the new fuel will result in a reduction in NOx in BS-VI compliant vehicles by 25 per cent in petrol cars and by 70 per cent in diesel cars. The switchover, he said, is a tedious task as every drop of old, higher-sulphur content fuel has to be flushed out in depots, pipelines and tanks before being replaced by BS-VI. "We are confident of disruption-free switchover to BS-VI supplies across the country," he said. "What we will be supplying is the best quality available anywhere in the world. You don't have any better fuel that is supplied in any part of the world. Perhaps our BS-VI fuel will be better than equivalent fuel in some parts of the US and Europe." India adopted a fuel upgradation programme in the early 1990s. Low lead gasoline (petrol) was introduced in 1994 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. On February 1, 2000, unleaded gasoline was mandated nationwide. Similarly, BS-2000 (Euro-I equivalent, BS-1) vehicle emission norms were introduced for new vehicles from April 2000. BS-II (Euro-II equivalent) emission norms for new cars were introduced in Delhi from 2000 and extended to the other metro cities in 2001. Benzene limits have been reduced progressively from 5 per cent in 2000 to 1 per cent nationwide. Lead content in gasoline was removed in phases and only unleaded gasoline is being produced and sold from February 1, 2000. The octane number of gasoline signifies the improved performance of the engine. Loss in octane number due to phasing out of lead was made up by installing new facilities in the refinery and changes in refinery operation. RON (Research Octane Number) of gasoline for BS-2000 spec was increased to 88. This has over time been increased to 91. Singh said sulphur reduction will reduce Particulate Matter (PM) emissions even in the in-use older generation diesel vehicles. ANZ MKJ
