More and more people are on the lookout for courses that can help them further their careers. And with the sector cluttered and many players spending big bucks on advertising, it is important for different players to come up with differentiated communications, to be able to capture its consumer’s mindspace. Simplilearn, which calls itself the world’s No 1 online Bootcamp for digital economy skills has just launched a campaign titled #CannotBeLockedDown and is investing big to take its message to its targeted consumers. We speak to Mark Moran, Chief Marketing Officer, Simplilearn who shares the platform’s journey so far, its plans around the new campaign and its strategies to capture a bigger market share. The campaign Simplilearn’s has come up with a high decibel campaign after quite a few years, but it plans to go all out with this new campaign. The aim of the campaign is to celebrate the spirit of individuals from across the world that’ve steadfastly pursued their ambitions despite the pandemic and are now reaping the results of all their hardwork. However, in the midst of everything, we have been fortunate enough to be supporting a community that's really out there, leaning into their careers and trying to make the best of the moment, learning skills while being stuck at home and doing their day jobs. We wanted to celebrate that spirit through this campaign while also talk about why we are good and why they should take a course from us. It just felt like a good time to spread some positivity and reset the conversation.” While it is a digital-first campaign, it will also be launched across print and TV. OTT will also be an important part of the mix. “We are putting aside Rs 100 crore for the campaign. It's a fully integrated campaign where you'll be seeing a lot happening on social, some contests to try and get some user-generated content in the same vein as what we are saying in the ads. On the video side, what we already have should last us the year but if we do need some refreshing, we will do that as and when needed,” explained Moran. Simplilearn’s journey so far Founded in 2010, Simplilearn is based in San Francisco, California, and Bangalore, India. It offers access to world-class work-ready training to individuals and businesses around the world. Currently, it is present in around 160 countries. Close to 60% of its revenue comes from outside India and now, the platform is working towards increasing its share in the country. “Around 40% of our revenues come from India currently, almost the same percentage comes from the US and the rest comes from APAC, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. We’re not present in China currently because we are an English-only platform for the time being. So we are quite global. We primarily address individual learners who are taking hold of their career, but about a quarter of our business is enterprise-oriented and B2B where companies are going through digital transformation or retraining large teams. A big part of our enterprise business actually comes from individual learners who have a great experience and recommend us to others,” he added. Currently, the platform has been focusing more on technology-based learners, its core offering is digital skills. It has also added <keyword id="6360839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mba" source="Orion">MBA</keyword> to its list of offerings. On who their core audiences are, Moran said, “That would be people who are several years, around 4-5 years into their careers and we go all the way to people into their 40s and 50s who may have already started down the path of being a data scientist or digital marketer but they want to go deeper. And that's why they come to our bootcamps which are all designed around specific job roles that are needed in the market today.” The platform has partnerships with several universities and colleges including <keyword id="83617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="purdue-university" source="Orion">Purdue University</keyword>, IIT Kanpur, Caltech and <keyword id="401516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-massachusetts" source="Orion">University of Massachusetts</keyword>. Simplilearn had also launched SkillUp, its free learning platform to offer learners short-term skilling programs in November last year. The platform aims to onboard five million learners on its SkillUp platform in the next two years. But how is it working on making its platform more engaging, so that people do not miss out on the classroom experience? “We've spent the last 6 years building our online bootcamp. Our real differentiation is that we have, by far, the most interactive curriculum and pedagogy around our courses. Almost 60-70% of our curriculum is interactive in real-time. Our whole focus has been around super high engagement and we are sitting at the right place in the market. Research shows that people learn more efficiently by being engaged and active, it's hard to be a passive learner for most people. Most researchers expect that when this finally does go away, a massive amount of market share will remain online and they'll be consuming courses like ours that are super high engagement, highly personalized designed for a specific career that you're looking for,” said Moran. The future Currently Simplilearn is completely focused on offering upskilling programs. However, is there a chance of it offering courses to a younger audience? “We are now launching fully accredited degree programs. So you'll continue to see lots of additional partnerships announced with universities, both in India and around the world. The K-12 segment is not on our roadmap but the young adult right to people at the end of their career are more our addressable market,” he explained. On what their key areas of focus will be in the future, he said, “The nature of work these days is such that if you're not formally trying to up-skill what you're doing every couple of years, you really risk becoming obsolete in a couple of years because things are moving so quickly. We've all read statistics that suggest that there could be around 15 million people displaced around the globe in the next 8-10 years. There will be millions of new jobs created but they're all going to be in these digital categories, which is exactly what we focus on. We've always been around digital, we will expand into related business categories, like MBAs and other technically-oriented skills, but its probably going to be a long time before we teach Spanish or cooking or playing the guitar. Other people are doing it, and doing it really well, but we're be fundamentally focused on helping you have a successful career and a successful life.”

Bengaluru is the only Indian city to be ranked among the top 30 global startup ecosystems ranked by the report. It jumped two ranks this year in the world’s top 30 startup ecosystems list, according to the report. There are 30 global cities that it said have the potential to become the “next” hubs including Bengaluru. Bengaluru is home to a number of unicorns and is known for its edtech and fintech startups. However, it has been facing several structural bottlenecks. “A weak policy environment in India, as well as relatively low levels of research production, means that <keyword id="6355033" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword> might face more challenges in deep tech startup sub-sectors — those requiring tangible IP — than it did in Software, the report explained. It further said, “Potentially, this might become a significant hindrance in the ecosystem, threatening its future growth,” said the report. The city is also facing challenges due to “quality” of funding. The past growth “Bengaluru, Sydney, Stockholm, and Berlin stand out for their relatively low levels of Funding Quality, driven by lack of local, experienced VCs compared to other ecosystem”, said the report. Edtech and fintech hub India has witnessed exponential growth in co-working spaces over the last year which has fueled expansion in fintech and edutech hubs in India, with about 42% of startups based in Bengaluru. A recent India FinTech Report 2019 by global innovation platform MEDICI says that India is the second biggest Fintech Hub after the US with over 2,000 startups nourishing in the zone. Almost every top ecosystem has a strong national regulatory environment that encourages IP commercialization, according to the report.Here, too, Bangalore, along with Beijing and Shanghai was an exception. “Bangalore has all of the ingredients to create a world class tech ecosystem - investors, engineers, clients, experts - and the potential to build high-quality global startups at a fraction of the cost.” <a href="https://startupgenome.com/reports">said</a> Varun Chawla Founder, 91springboard in the report.

The post-graduate programme (PGP) in management class of 2019-21 had 435 students who got a total of 481 <keyword id="162151" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-offers">job offers</keyword> over a period of two days. “Our students have done remarkably well. They have been recruited by reputed companies despite COVID-19 disruptions,” said Prof. U Dinesh Kumar, chairperson of career development services at <keyword id="60501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Bangalore">IIM Bangalore</keyword>, in a statement. Consulting companies were the highlight of the placement drive having made 165 offers. The top recruiters were Accenture, Bain &amp; Company, McKinsey &amp; Company, and the Boston Consulting Group. “Companies from overseas locations like Amsterdam, Dubai and Singapore made offers across consulting, finance, international trading, and business strategy,” said Tapas Ranjan Pati, manager of career development services at IIM Bangalore, in a statement. The second most in demand job offering was from IT companies, mostly for the product management role. Meanwhile, startups like Ola, BYJU’S, and Razorpay too hired students from IIM Bangalore. IIM Bangalore’s 435 students get 481 job offers in two days – IT consulting leads with one-third of the opportunities

Today is a day that <keyword id="2900267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Byju">Byju</keyword> Raveendran, Founder and CEO, Byju’s will never forget, a feat because of how he approaches teaching and life. 
 
Byju’s is India’s largest Ed-tech company and its learning app has not just inspired more than 2,50,000 student subscribers, but also<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/10-years-ago-FB-had-the-most-inglorious-launch-moment-in-history160but-it-changed-everything/articleshow/54039367.cms"> Facebook</a> founder <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> and his wife <keyword id="3634898" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priscilla-Chan">Priscilla Chan</keyword>, who have led the investment of $50million in this app, in the latest round through the <keyword id="3157621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chan-zuckerberg-initiative">Chan Zuckerberg Initiative</keyword>. Mark announced the investment some hours back, instantly making Byju’s one of the most popular teaching apps in the world. 
 
Byju describes himself as a ‘teacher by choice, entrepreneur by chance.’ Business Insider spoke to Byju to find out what turned him into the phenomenal teacher he is.

 Byju had a very humble beginning. He started his schooling in a village called Azhikode, in <keyword id="6357542" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kannur">Kannur</keyword> district of Kerala, India. Born to a pair of teachers, he went to a Malayalam medium school where both his parents taught. 
 
It’s rather surprising to know, however, that he missed most of his classes to play sports. He played six sports in school and pursued his interest up until the university level. His favorite sports are Football, Table Tennis, and Cricket even though he pursues multiple sports genres even now. 
 
He believes that a lot of learning happens outside classrooms and playing sports and games are crucial for any student. ‘These helped me in real life skills that helped me succeed in life’, Byju says adding, ‘Games teach you teamwork, leadership skills, how to control aggression and perform under pressure. These scenarios you will never come across if you’re only learning in a classroom.’ 
 
While he played all day, his studies never suffered. He attributes that to the life skill that he learned on the sports field, in an unstructured environment ‘The sports schedule forced me to start ‘learning on my own’ by asking questions. It takes less amount of time if the students take an initiative, especially in the subjects they like. Parents and teachers are important, but they mostly play a supportive role.’ 
 
He laments the current educational system in place in India, where rote learning is prevalent. ‘The exams get over and you forget everything you learned. Students fear exams because they see it as an end goal. When the focus is more on marks and grades, the result is that you miss out on the learning part. Assessment is a part of learning, not just learning. The focus should be more on learning, that’s when exams get below your level.’ 
 
Byju insists that the only way to succeed is when every student is playing to his or her strengths. ‘It is important for every student to find out what they like and figure what they’re good at.’ His favorite subject was Math, a subject that most of us dread. He was a National level Math Olympiad winner in school and that same focus and dedication towards his most loved subject is what led to the creation of Byju’s. 
 When Byju graduated College and started working as an engineer, during a vacation break, he ended up sitting for the CAT exam (Common Aptitude Test that students appear for in order to gain entrance into the elite <keyword id="63618" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Management">Indian Institute of Management</keyword> colleges that provide MBA degrees), alongside his friends, just for fun. He scored a 100 percentile and was surprised that he had cracked one of India’s toughest and prestigious entrance exams on the first try, without actually having prepared thoroughly at all. He sat for it again to test himself and repeated the score. For him, the exam was another game he loved to play. 
 
This success got the students flocking to him, first his friends, then friends of friends. He figured he quite enjoyed teaching and conducted CAT workshops for free, starting with 35-40 students, going up to a 1000 in a matter of weeks. 
This overwhelming response validated his method of teaching, where he taught students how to predict questions, instead of memorizing them. This method of familiarizing students attracted students from different cities to Bangalore (India’s Silicon Valley), where he had started. 
 
He quit his job as an engineer and took up teaching full-time, even traveling to nearby towns to reach as many students as possible. 
From coffee shops to rooms to auditoriums to stadiums, there wasn’t a single place in the city where Byju’s classes weren’t running. He turned to the digital platform when he realized that he could make learning fun for many more students, simultaneously. 
He’s been at it since 2007 but the company- 'Think and learn' was formed in 2011, alongside few of his best students who joined him after graduating from the elite IIMs. 
 
The Byju’s learning app, which is making learning contextually and visually appealing, has seen over 5.5 million downloads. It was released just 12 months back and the founder is stunned by the response he has seen from school students. 
 
In the Indian start-up ecosystem, where the biggest names are losing money, Byju’s is already profitable and popular amongst the most impressionable ones amongst us. This goes to show that sometimes children are the best judge of character perhaps they see the value and ask the fundamental questions which matter the most.

As industries face talent shortage in the sector, IITs recently rolled out degree programmes and certifications including a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Artificial Intelligence — providing diverse options in technology courses. IIT Hyderabad has been the first institute in the country to introduce B.Tech in AI technology. The institute started its first batch this year, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/with-iits-launching-new-courses-in-ai-and-ml-btech-aspirants-have-a-lot-to-choose-from/articleshow/69795185.cms">enrolling</a> 20 students to the course. “What surprised us was that many students this year chose BTech course in AI as against regular CSE (computer sciences) despite having a better score. This year, the JEE advanced rank for opting AI stood at 478 and closed at 657. Overall, IIT Bangalore and IIT Delhi continue to remain top choices for engineering aspirants. The industry estimates that India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally.
