When <keyword id="920574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Robert-Knight">Robert Knight</keyword> launched two newspapers, The Englishman and The Friend of India, between 1810 and 1890 in India, did he ever fathom about growth of those newspapers? And that they would ignite the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Independence+movement">Indian Independence movement</a>? Knight, who was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=British+East+India+Company">British</a> man himself, fought for free press and also resisted attempts by governments, businessmen and cultural spokespersons of influencing press and journalists. Knight became an inspiration for journalists and publishers who started promoting self-rule and criticized the policies of the British. 
 
By 1925, newspapers mushroomed across the length and breadth of the country. Knight’s The Englishman and The Friend of India merged and became The Statesman in 1875, and other newspapers like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=The+Times+of+India+">The Times of India</a> (1838), The Hindu (1878), Anandabazar Patrika (1922) and many more dotted the streets of India. 
 One more newspaper, which grabbed eyeballs was The Indian Express. Sensing the need to aware people and fuel the freedom struggle further, <keyword id="1943309" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ramnath-Goenka">Ramnath Goenka</keyword> launched The Indian Express in 1932 and subsequently formed the Indian Express Group with various sister publications. 
 Goenka, born in <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword> on April 3, 1904, went to <a href="Chennai">Chennai</a> to learn the business and worked as a despatch vendor with the Free Press Journal. In 2000, he featured in India Today magazine’s ‘100 People Who Shaped India’. 
 The Indian Express, whose tagline is ‘<keyword id="58267" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Journalism">Journalism</keyword> of Courage’ became an inspiration with its stories and grew leaps and bounds.

 2. Loksatta: Established in 1948, Loksatta is one of the most widely read Marathi newspapers in the country. The daily is published from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai">Mumbai</a>, Pune, Nagpur, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, and Delhi. Loksatta Vruttant is a daily supplement with the paper that focuses on city specific issues. Other supplements include Lokrang, Chaturang, Viva, Vasturang and Career Counsellor. 
 
3. Screen: It is a leading weekly film magazine in India. Its content focuses on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bollywood">Bollywood</a>. It also has an e-magazine version. It was founded on September 26, 1951 with Manorama Katju as its editor. Screen, established in 1995, organizes and sponsors the Screen Awards to honour actors, directors and technicians for excellence in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hindi+cinema">Hindi cinema</a>.  4. The <keyword id="336252" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Financial-Express">Financial Express</keyword>: It is a business daily, published by the group since 1961. Edited by the celebrated journalist, Pravin Tokekar, Lokprabha has over the years received many honors, Dr. <keyword id="3002513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Babasaheb-Ambedkar-Samajik-Patrakarita">Babasaheb Ambedkar Samajik Patrakarita</keyword> award being one of them. 
 
6. Jansatta: It was launched in 1983 with a single- minded purpose to reach out to a large section of the Hindi speaking Indian intelligentsia. In Hindi, 'jan' means people and 'satta' means government. Therefore, one can appropriately recognize the meaning of 'Jansatta' as people's mandate. It is regularly published from Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Chandigarh">Chandigarh</a>. 
 
7. The New Indian Express: In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death, the Indian Express Group split between the family members. The southern editions are known as The New Indian Express, while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original name The Indian Express. Both companies – The Indian Express Group and The New Indian Express are now separate entities.

<ul><li>Dr. Ambedkar, heralded as the <keyword id="4780316" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="father-of-Indian-Constitution">Father of Indian Constitution</keyword> was born on April 14, which is observed as <keyword id="6377276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambedkar-jayanti">Ambedkar Jayanti</keyword> year on year.</li><li>The Constitution of India, which contains the fundamental laws and principles of the Indian Democratic Republic was drafted under the chairmanship of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar. </li><li>Dr. Ambedkar’s massive contribution to the Constitution of India makes him a great leader who will be remembered for a thousand more years.</li></ul>In 2020, the nation celebrates the 129th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar, who was born on April 14, 1981. From 2015, the government has declared a public holiday in the country on Ambedkar Jayanti. Dr. Ambedkar’s birthday was publicly celebrated in India for the first time in Pune on April 14, 1928. Social activist and Ambedkarite Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay was the one who initiated the tradition of celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti. On April 14, 1990, the Indian Government honored Dr. Ambedkar with the most prestigious Bharat Ratna Award. Around this time, a life size portrait of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar was unveiled in the central hall of the Parliament building. The year stretching from April 14, 1990 to April 14, 1991 was celebrated as the ‘Year of Social Justice’ in memory of Dr. Ambedkar. Behind all these recognitions goes the mammoth contribution of this veteran who guided the drafting of <keyword id="99432" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-constitution">Indian Constitution</keyword>, which is the supreme law book and scripture of the democracy. Dr. Ambedkar’s contribution to the Constitution of India Once India became independent on August 15, 1947, the nation appointed Dr. Ambedkar as the chairman of the constitution drafting committee on August 29, 1947. Dr. Ambedkar strongly opined that the government in a democracy must be a responsible government formed by the representatives of people. He never wanted to impose a constitution on the Indians, rather he submitted that the opinion of the masses on how they wished to be governed must be accepted. He said, “The best government rests on the people, and not on the few on persons and not on property, on the free development of public opinion and not on authority.” Dr. Ambedkar strongly believed that the unity and solidarity of the country can be maintained in the long run only when the gaps between the different classes were equalized. Dr. Ambedkar highly emphasized the religious, caste and gender equality. The reservation system we find in the Indian constitution was purely the brainchild of Dr. Ambedkar who thought of it as a means to create a social balance among the different classes of the population in India. While drafting the constitution, Dr. Ambedkar envisioned a strong India administered by a federal government. When he sought to give the central government more powers, some members of the constituent assembly criticized him saying the idea goes against his own view that the rights and values of every individual in the country and the interests of every province and each village must be ensured. From this point of view, it was contradictory to make the center a strong entity. However, justifying his stand on the strong central government, Dr. Ambedkar said the center must be strong to “save minorities from the misrule of majority” and also “for it is only the center which can work for a common end and for the general interests of the country as a whole.”

Ambedkar Jayanti – The birth anniversary of the father of the Indian Constitution

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, who was in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Lucknow as a chief guest on convocation, was disrupted by protesters, who were eventually escorted out. 
 
Modi’s speech was disrupted when students started chanting anti-Modi slogans. 
 
“Narendra Modi Murdabad,” students raised. 
 
 
 
Meanwhile, Modi also broke his silence on the suicide of Dalit scholar in Hyderabad. 
 
“When I received this news that a young man Rohith committed suicide, I thought about the condition of his parents,” said Modi. 
 
Students are protesting Rohith’s suicide, demaning a probe into it. HRD Minister Smriti Irani said it was not a Dalit vs non-Dalit battle. 
 
Modi hinted that these issues should not be politicised. 
 
“There must have been reasons, politics is different. The truth that India lost her son,” said Modi.

"The sanctity of the Constitution, it is our responsibility. We must not forget that people give us power when we move together in consensus... Consensus is more important than majority rule…." After a long time, we saw Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> move away from launching scathing attacks on the Opposition and rise beyond petty politics to talk of the sanctity of the Indian Constitution. On Friday, as he addressed the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> on the <keyword id="3152186" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Constitution-Debate">Constitution debate</keyword>, he was seen reaching out to the Opposition like never before amid discussions being held to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr <keyword id="116616" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BR-Ambedkar">BR Ambedkar</keyword>. His ‘Idea of India’ 
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi said <keyword id="6354914" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Democracy">democracy</keyword> gains strength when consensus is built and no party can impose its will no matter how big majority it possesses. In his one-hour long speech, Modi said 'India first' is the only religion of government and Constitution is its only scripture. 
 
Rising above politics to laud all the previous governments 
 
Modi said that all past Prime Ministers and governments deserve credit for the country's growth and no one can say that past governments did not do anything. "The growth of this country is because of all the Prime Ministers and all governments. We can never say that past government has done nothing. It is the demand of time that we make people aware of the sanctity and strength of our Constitution," he said. 
 
Saluting Dr BR Ambedkar for the Constitution: 
 
Lauding Dr. BR Ambedkar for his contribution to the making of the Indian Constitution, the Prime Minister said that Babasaheb consumed all the poison and gave India 'amrit' in the form of the Constitution. He added that the spirit of the parliamentary debates and Constitution is not about one or two individuals, but about the entire country. 
 
Envisaging the need to follow constitutional measures for maintaining democracy: 
 
"If Constitution simply becomes a document to be followed by the government then democracy will suffer, that's why it needs to reach the roots. To strengthen our democracy, it is important for people to know about all the aspects of our Constitution. If we wish to maintain democracy, we must maintain and uphold constitutional measures. Constitution's purpose is not just to define three organs of the state, but also limit their authority," the Prime Minister said.

You could be a genius, but this 4-year old would beat you hands-down

Two recent events have a lot to offer in terms of understanding India's slow and clamorous development process. The first of these is the ghost of Mandal Commission Report haunting India 25 years on. The second is the relatively innocuous <keyword id="33523" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Religion">religion</keyword> census data of 2011 that has been released recently. The first started with a series of rallies (the last one being held in Ahmedabad) demanding reservations for the relatively well off community of Patidars or Patels in <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. The demand for reservations is particularly misplaced in the historical context as the Patels were the people in the 1980's who were against the reservation system. Also, the Patel agitation now should raise some serious questions about rethinking and redesigning the reservation system. Does the present reservation system benefit the socially backward for whom it was made? Does our changing reality call for an economic basis for reservation rather than one based on social backwardness? Does the present system lead to mainstreaming of the masses and bring on social justice? Does it ensure equality in society? How long should it continue? Are alternative methods of mainstreaming feasible? How many generations and how many times should a person be entitled to reservations are all questions that not only the policymakers but the society as a whole should ponder over. One must keep in mind that the Great <keyword id="135752" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Babasaheb-Ambedkar">Babasaheb Ambedkar</keyword> wanted reservations to end after ten years. It has been 68 years and yet the system continues. Just continuing with the past systems like reservations as they exist today militates against the idea of a thinking and a democratic society. 

	It is also important to understand the mindset of the 'race to the bottom' by the community and political leaders wanting to secure reservations for their community members. Today the reality is that people want economic benefits like jobs far more than they hate social backwardness. It forms the basis of this 'race to the bottom' where most communities do not mind a social backwardness tag in lieu of economic benefits.
 

	Also a country where almost half the seats in various facets of government service are reserved militates against the idea of a meritocratic society- the best man/woman for the job. Social justice for somebody should not be the basis of social injustice for somebody else especially if it could lead to serious damage to society. Thus, the need is for a rethink of India's reservation policy. 
 

	Another major development was the release of the religion based census that showed that the Hindu population is just below 80% in India. The Muslims continue to constitute the second largest majority with a population of just over 14 percent. Religious data is often questioned for its release date and also at times to showcase the fall in Hindu population and rise in Muslim population. While these are popular narratives, that may not hold the scrutiny of reality and data, they underscore an important point that religion continues to be a predominant identity in post independent India even after 68 years of independence. These socio-historical identities continue to be relevant and continue to be used by political parties for garnering votes. It at times acts as an impediment to social and economic progress.
 

	In the years ahead India should work towards pushing these identities backward or realigning them to enable the rise of a meritocratic society based on ethical and moral values. That will surely help in improving India's developmental outcomes.

The terrifying <keyword id="146947" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="lightning" source="Orion">lightning</keyword> and thunder phenomenon that <keyword id="6355192" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lucknow" source="Orion">Lucknow</keyword> witnessed in the wee hours of September 11 is the kind never seen before. Although lightning with thunderstorms are not unusual, the residents of Lucknow faced a harrowing night because of high frequency. The Met officials said there was lightning for 11 and half hours intermittently from 7.40 p.m. to 7.10 a.m. However, the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) does not have data on the number of lightning strikes between these hours and any previous records. Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at IMD Lucknow, said that movement of cloud mass is comparatively slower during monsoon. "Cyclonic circulations over north-west Madhya Pradesh and the monsoon trough was slightly to the south of its normal position due to which there was abundant moisture supply from Bay of Bengal over the state of Uttar Pradesh in the lower troposphere. "At the same time there was an active western disturbance in the middle troposphere which was interacting with low level easterly due to this synoptic setting up this kind of rainfall activities in Uttar Pradesh," he explained. Noted environmentalist Prof Venkatesh Dutta from the Department of Environmental Science at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, said: "Lightning occurred owing to the fact of intense heating of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Such type of extreme weather events undoubtedly reflects the impacts of rising atmospheric temperature and climate change. August was the hottest-ever recorded in Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh, and the heat intensified cloud activities." Virendra Singh Yadav, a retired deputy director of the Geological Survey of India, said: "Lucknow and adjoining areas may also experience an increase in the severity and frequency of these incidents in future. Hence, there is a need for prevention, preparedness and to invest in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which will save lives, livestock, property and infrastructure. It is a wakeup call to us by nature. "Lightning is of three types. The first is thundercloud or intra-cloud lightning. The second is cloud-to-cloud or Inter-cloud lightning and third is cloud-to-ground lightning (CG). The third type of lightning takes a toll on lives and property, and therefore, is of more concern to us. However, inter-cloud and intra-cloud lightning are also dangerous as they may hit aircrafts. "Its peak power and total energy are very high, with the peak power discharge in the order of a 100 million watts per metre of the channel and the peak channel temperature approaching 30,000 degrees Celsius. Peak currents in a lightning discharge range up to hundreds of kilo amperes (kA) with its typical value being 40 kA." Another scientist said: "Owing to global warming, we are observing the increasing number of hot days in a year which, when combined with rain, leads to occurrence of more intense thunderstorms and lightning of greater intensity."
