On top of it, its results for most of the months for the current fiscal year are delayed again. Sources told IANS that the company, which has sacked thousands of employees to date and has taken deeper cuts, is still unable to achieve profitability at group level amid mounting losses. In October after firing 2,500 employees and consolidating its business in the country, Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business, had said that "these measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023". At a group level, BYJU's had said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". However, this appears impossible now with the company still struggling to stem growing losses. Last week, the edtech major laid off another 15 per cent of its employees, or more than 1,000 people, mainly from its engineering teams, as the company continues phased layoffs to remain growth-oriented in a global economic meltdown. Between April-July 2022, the company logged a revenue of Rs 4,530 crore. Post that, there has been no communication from the company about the pending results. The edtech unicorn reported a loss of Rs 4,588 crore for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2021. BYJU's had claimed it clocked gross revenues of nearly Rs 10,000 crore in FY22. Meanwhile, according to sources, BYJU's acquisition of Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for nearly $1 billion is still incomplete and Aakash Chaudhry, Co-Promoter and Managing Director of Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL), has resigned from the board. When reached, Aakash declined to comment. New reports emerged in December that BYJU's, which may have seen a definite erosion in its last market value at $22 billion, hasn't paid several of its vendors for months. According to Morning Context, "some of the payments are due since March and there is trouble with their clearance. In the eight months to October 2022, cumulative dues to vendors have crossed Rs 90 crore". When reached, BYJU's had not offered a comment on this report. In seemingly fresh trouble for BYJU's, some lenders had asked the edtech unicorn to repay part of a $1.2 billion <keyword id="6360217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan" source="Orion">loan</keyword> they recently bought into as they renegotiate terms of the debt. The demand from <keyword id="88431" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="creditors" source="Orion">creditors</keyword> comes at a time when BYJU's was in the process to restructure the loan. BYJU's to miss March 2023 deadline for group level profitability, results delayed again

WhiteHat Jr, which at its peak had more than 8,000 employees across the country, now has some hundreds of roles left as it never picked up the pace and brought revenues for the company, informed sources told IANS on Thursday. According to people close to the development, the discussions at the top level at BYJU's have happened to get rid of the WhiteHat Jr brand which has faced severe criticism in the past. BYJU's, however, told IANS that they have no plans of shutting it down. "We are merely optimising it for organic and efficient growth. We remain fully committed to delivering world-class educational experiences and solutions that empower students to achieve their full potential," the company spokesperson said. The company said that it is constantly evaluating and optimising its business operations towards global growth. "As an ongoing activity, we are actively evaluating all our business units to ensure that they are aligned with our path to profitability," BYJU's told IANS. TechCrunch was first to report on the development. BYJU's acquired WhiteHat Jr in July 2020 for nearly $300 million. It reported a massive Rs 1,690 crore loss in the financial year 2021, while its expenses reached Rs 2,175 crore in FY21 -- compared to Rs 69.7 crore in FY20. In the April-May period last year, over 1,000 of its employees, including teachers which are on contractual basis, and hence not full-time employees, resigned. Later, more WhiteHat Jr employees either moved on their own or were asked to go. WhiteHat Jr shut its schools division that targeted to take its flagship coding curriculum to 10 lakh school students by the next academic year. Its foray into teaching music online, offering guitar and piano playing, yielded no fruitful results. BYJU's likely to shut down beleaguered coding platform WhiteHat Jr

Edtech major <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s, in the process of laying off thousands of employees as part of restructuring its business, on Friday hired football star and sports icon Lionel <keyword id="6355806" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="messi" source="Orion">Messi</keyword> as the global brand ambassador for its social impact arm, and the move has not gone well with the industry as well as people. The long-term engagement, which begins as Messi embarks on his final campaign to win the World Cup as captain of Argentina, will see him feature in campaigns promoting BYJU'S 'Education For All'. Abhishek Desai, Founder, CricHeroes, told IANS that it does sound like the irony that where you are laying off people on one side and hiring Messi as your global brand ambassador. "But I think that's the cost everyone pays for growing too fast. It's not that the company does not have money but growing too fast it creates a lot of redundancy in the organisation. Sooner or later you have to fix that and I think these layoffs are a result of that," said Desai. Edtech major BYJU's sacks thousands, and then hires Lionel Messi

While all eyes are on <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s much-awaited FY21 financial results that were set to be revealed on Wednesday, the edtech major has registered nearly Rs 9,991 crore in revenues in its FY22 financial results and its core K12 education business is growing very fast, top sources have revealed. In six months from February 2022 till July 2022, the company logged Rs 6,175 crore revenue, breaking all previous sales records, three people close to the matter told IANS. This is a substantial gain from its FY20 financial report, when the company registered revenue of Rs 2,434 crore with a net profit of Rs 51 crore. BYJU's investors were ecstatic at the company's growth in the core business in the recently-concluded meeting, sources told IANS, as the company logged 50 per cent growth (year-on-year) in its core K12 India business at Rs 1,205 crore, leaving no competition anywhere near it. After getting acquired by BYJU's for $1 billion last year, <keyword id="3406091" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aakash-educational-services" source="Orion">Aakash Educational Services</keyword> (AESL) has transformed into a hybrid edtech firm, expanding rapidly across the country, which is one of the key reasons behind BYJU's FY22 success. Meanwhile, after nearly 18 months delay of "ironing out the complexities", edtech major BYJU's was all set to reveal its financial report for FY21. According to sources, there is going to be a substantial difference between the projected sales and the audited revenue in BYJU's FY21 financial results. According to its FY20 financial report, the company registered revenue of ₹2,434 crore and a net profit of ₹ 51 crore. BYJU's set to release FY21 financial report, sales may see significant drop

Edtech platform <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s on Monday said that the company has received funds from 11 out of 13 investors in a Rs 3,600 crore funding round which started in June last year. New York-based Oxshott in September 2021 invested Rs 1,200 crore as part of the Series F round at Rs 285,072 per share, which is yet to arrive. "Additionally, Oxshott wasn't leading the round. In fact, they were one of the last investors to come in for that round. Out of the total Rs 3,600 crore, Rs 2,400 crore has already come in," a company spokesperson told IANS. Other investors in the round were Edelweiss (Rs 344.9 crore), IIFL (Rs 110 crore), Verition Multi-Strategy Master Fund (Rs 147 crore), and XN Exponent Holdings (Rs 150 crore). The Morning Context first reported that "money from <keyword id="14428557" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oxshott-capital-partners" source="Orion">Oxshott Capital Partners</keyword> or related entities for an investment has not reached the company". Oxshott <keyword id="14428559" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="venture-fund-x-llc" source="Orion">Venture Fund X LLC</keyword> and <keyword id="14428558" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="drd-holdings-sarl" source="Orion">DRD Holdings SARL</keyword> are both investment vehicles of <keyword id="14428556" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oxshott-capital" source="Orion">Oxshott Capital</keyword>. It is common industry practice for investment funds to establish separate investment vehicles for compliance/internal structuring purposes to deploy investments. In the current case, the investor has requested that their investment be deployed through DRD Holdings SARL (instead of Oxshott Venture Fund X LLC). The fresh development came after another report recently claimed that some money in the Rs 6,300 crore private equity investment that BYJU's announced early this year has also not arrived. In March, BYJU'S had announced to raise about Rs 6,300 crore (around $800 million) from Sumeru Ventures, Vitruvian Partners, and BlackRock. <keyword id="1702989" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="byju-raveendran" source="Orion">Byju Raveendran</keyword>, Founder and CEO, was also part of the funding round and made a personal investment of $400 million. According to reports, the money from Sumeru Ventures "hasn't come in and questions are being raised about the fund's antecedents". However, BYJU'S said most of the funds have been received and the rest were on track. The company said that "its fundraising efforts are on track and majority of the $800 million has been already received". "The balance is also expected soon," a company spokesperson had told IANS. Meanwhile, the edtech giant said recently it has closed the nearly $1 billion acquisition of offline test preparatory services provider <keyword id="6380190" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aakash" source="Orion">Aakash</keyword>. The company, in a statement, said last week that its payments to Aakash are "closed" and the "audited financial results are going to be announced in the next 10 days". BYJU'S has also been in the news for laying off employees and disgruntled parents complaining about poor quality of learning material and sales pitches by agents. Late last month, BYJU's announced to cut nearly 600 jobs -- 300 employees at its Toppr learning platform and another 300 at coding platform WhiteHat Jr. "In order to reduce redundancies across our organisation after multiple acquisitions, we had to let go of nearly one per cent of our 50,000+ strong workforce," said a company spokesperson. BYJU'S also lost a case in a consumer court, where a Bengaluru man sued the company in a consumer court for providing low-quality tablets and study material to his son and daughter who were promised <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> tablets worth Rs 25,000. Further, the edtech major also backed out of its promise to convert the tuition fee of Rs 99,000 into EMIs. When the company did not pay heed to his demand of cancelling the subscription and refunding, he filed a case and won a refund of the fee of Rs 99,000 and a compensation of Rs 30,000, according to reports. Byjus raises more Rs 3,600 cr and says its fundraising plans are on 'track'

This move, the company said, is a way to avoid redundancies in job roles and the layoffs constitute 5% of its workforce. “These measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023," said Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business. As per the audited FY21 financials that it released last month after an 18-month delay, its losses widened by 20 times to ₹4,589 crore. In the last three years, the company has been on an acquisition spree. Its biggest one so far is that of offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for $1 billion in 2021. The payments to PE major Blackstone, which owned 38% in Aakash, were eventually <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/byjus-clears-230-million-dues-to-blackstone-for-aakash-acquisition/article65931486.ece">cleared by the company, albeit after delays</a>. It has also purchased Singapore-based <keyword id="6559242" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="great-learning" source="Orion">Great Learning</keyword> for $600 million in 2021. Both these entities will function independently, <keyword id="3320944" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byjus" source="Orion">Byjus</keyword> had said. Edtechs in trouble This year, many edtech companies have been suffering from loss of clientele after offline classes have commenced and screen fatigue. Since July this year, many edtech companies like Unacademy and Vedantu have been laying off <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/60000-jobs-in-startup-companies-may-lose-their-jobs-this-year-in-india-experts-say/amp_articleshow/91804572.cms">employees</a>. Byju’s which has by then also made its presence felt in offline coaching, is also known to have gone down the same path. However, various <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/business/byjus-lays-off-over-2500-employees-in-toppr-and-whitehat-jr-to-cut-costs-5463853.html">media reports have pegged the layoff </a>number between 1,500-2,500. The company vehemently denied the numbers, but did admit to retrenchments. “To recalibrate our business priorities and accelerate our long-term growth, we are optimizing our teams across our group companies. This entire exercise involves less than 500 employees from across Byju's group companies,” the company spokesperson said after denying the 2,500 layoff number. In good shape says management The edtech giant, which is valued at around $22 billion and is the first edtech unicorn in India has also been under scrutiny for various reasons. The company management however insists that it is in good shape. <keyword id="5563078" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="divya-gokulnath" source="Orion">Divya Gokulnath</keyword>, the company’s co-founder also came out in defense of the company saying that a lot has happened since its FY21 results and its widened losses have already been cut by half in FY22. “It’s easy to forget that we are 18 months post FY21, and that BYJU’S has grown more than 4 times in this span,” she wrote in an open letter on LinkedIn. For this year, the company has set a target to achieve $2 billion in revenues. The company founder has stated time <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/byju-s-focusing-on-profitable-growth-2-bn-revenue-within-the-sights-ceo-122092001266_1.html">and again that this</a> “revenue within sight”. The many troubles at BYJU’s that goes beyond the recent layoffs

Edtech major BYJU'S on Wednesday announced several measures to bolster its <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> business, saying that its K-10 business, which includes Toppr, <keyword id="1573710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meritnation" source="Orion">Meritnation</keyword>, <keyword id="192259" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tutorvista" source="Orion">TutorVista</keyword>, <keyword id="14957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="scholar" source="Orion">Scholar</keyword>, and HashLearn platforms, will now be consolidated as one business unit. To avoid redundancies and duplication of roles, the move will result in five per cent of its 50,000-strong workforce (about 2,500 people) being "rationalised across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner", the company said in a statement. Aakash Educational Services and Great Learning will continue to function as separate organisations, the company said in a statement. "As a mature organisation that takes its responsibility towards investors and stakeholders seriously, we aim to ensure sustainable growth alongside strong revenue growth. These measures will help us achieve profitability in the defined time frame of March 2023," said Mrinal Mohit, CEO, BYJU'S India business. At a group level, BYJU'S said its top priority is to achieve "overall profitability by March 2023". Over the last three years, BYJU'S acquired multiple companies whose integration with its core business is now complete. BYJU'S said at the group level, it will continue to hire across all levels and will end this financial year as a net hirer. The company plans to hire a total of 10,000 more teachers in the coming year, adding to its current strength of 20,000 teachers. It said it is expanding its teams along with hiring senior leadership to further build operational strength. The company said there will also be re-targeting of the marketing budget towards more efficient growth. "Since significant brand awareness has been created in India over the past few years, there is a scope to optimise marketing budgets locally and prioritise spending to increase brand awareness in overseas markets," the company said. BYJU'S said it is also reinventing its sales model to focus more on inside sales, using video calling platforms which in turn will enhance customer experience and reduce operational costs. Multiple inside sales hubs will now be created across India from where BYJU'S sales associates will reach out to incoming leads through calls, email, and <keyword id="10296" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zoom" source="Orion">Zoom</keyword> meetings. Inside sales will lead to higher customer satisfaction and lower costs. "None of these measures will have any impact on our revenue run rate," said Mohit. After six stressful and tough months, the company's Co-founder Byju Raveendran recently said that "the worst is finally over" and there is only "growth ahead" as seen in the company's FY22 financial results, where it logged Rs 10,000 crore in gross revenues. BYJU's consolidates India business, 5% workforce to be 'rationalised' across teams

India's most-valuable startup <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s is facing larger scrutiny from the government as it has failed to submit its audited financial report from Deloitte for the financial year 2021 even after more than 17 months. Insider company sources told IANS that the report is expected anytime soon, may be next week, but the long delay has now alarmed the <keyword id="6376435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-corporate-affairs" source="Orion">Ministry of Corporate Affairs</keyword> (MCA). According to sources, the ministry sent a letter to BYJU's earlier this month, asking the $22 billion edtech startup to explain the delay in filing its audit report for FY21. The IPO-bound BYJU's, according to sources privy to the development, has completed the consolidation of businesses after "ironing out the complexities" as the edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion last year. According to them, there are "no compliance issues" as the company has filed its FY21 tax returns in the "due diligent manner". BYJU's did not comment on the latest development. In July, <keyword id="1575" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="congress" source="Orion">Congress</keyword> MP Karti P. Chidambaram shot off a letter to the <keyword id="107956" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="serious-fraud-investigation-office" source="Orion">Serious Fraud Investigation Office</keyword> (SFIO) to investigate the finances of edtech major BYJU's. Chidambaram called for a probe into BYJU's for not filing its 2020-21 (FY21) financial results, which the company had earlier stated to file by July 15, saying that it has yet to secure $250 million (around Rs 2,500 crore) capital from its most recent funding round in March. The company, which faced intense scrutiny in the past couple of months over several issues ranging from delayed audit and layoffs, made multiple acquisitions in FY21 and each of these acquisitions had a different accounting style and year. So far, BYJU's has raised over $6 billion in funding, and aims to file an IPO in the US through the <keyword id="6767232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="special-purpose-acquisition-company" source="Orion">Special Purpose Acquisition Company</keyword> (SPAC) route. The company is also reportedly in talks to raise another $1 billion as it expands globally. First, to enter new geographies. Second, to incorporate new services or products into business offerings. Third, to eliminate a disruptor that could be a potential threat to the company in the long run. “Because of all three reasons, Byju's will continue to acquire new players…,” Agrawal told Business Insider. The organic way of doing so, by building a team and hiring people, may actually take a couple of years. The inorganic way, by acquiring companies, can help speed up the process of scaling up. Madhur Singhal, managing partner and chief executive officer (CEO) at consulting firm Praxis Global, explained that the company’s expansion largely depends on how well the company develops an empirically grounded model of technology and capability that taps the market opportunity with cross-selling into customers of acquisitions they are making. “If this strategy comes right, it could result in bigger and faster outcomes,” he added. While the global market will make up a third of Byju's revenue, India will continue to be the biggest market for the edtech company due to the massive growth of its core product in two to three years, Kishore emphasised. The recent acquisition of the test preparation chain Aakash Educational Services, which has over 200 coaching centres across India, is going to accelerate the company’s growth in India as well.
