The Chinese electric car maker also claimed that <keyword id="67247" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="byd" source="Orion">BYD</keyword> Seal has a range of up to 700 km on a single charge. "With the unveiling of the electric luxury sedan BYD Seal, and the launch of the limited edition of BYD ATTO 3, Blade Battery, and the e-Platform 3.0, we resonate our commitment to contribute to the growth of the Indian electric vehicle segment with future EV technologies," <keyword id="13023382" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sanjay-gopalakrishnan" source="Orion">Sanjay Gopalakrishnan</keyword>, Senior Vice President of Electric Passenger Vehicles of BYD <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, said. The bookings of BYD ATTO 3 have been very encouraging, and we are all set to start the first deliveries from January 2023," said Gopalakrishnan. BYD Seal is BYD India's third model for the passenger EV segment in India after All New e-6 electric MPV and BYD ATTO 3 e-SUV, both of which are already on sale. Auto Expo 2023: Chinese electric carmaker BYD India to launch luxury sedan in 2023's last quarter

Analysts at UBS recently investigated to see just how comparable to Elon Musk's popular model it might be.Ultimately, tearing down the Seal — "a good example of Chinese EV models' technological edges and cost optimization" — reinforced the bank's belief that Chinese auto companies are here to stay and dominate the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-car-companies-europe-expansion-threatens-mercedes-volkswagen-2023-9">global electric car market</a>, it said in a note to clients.<div type="image" title="The Tesla Model 3." height="1875" width="2500" msid="103614736" hostid="261"></div><h2>BYD Seal versus Tesla Model 3</h2>The Seal rivals the Model 3 in many ways, according to UBS, and it does so at a "10-20% lower selling price."Analysts noted features such as its larger interior space, 5G connectivity, and rotational central cockpit screen, as well as how it "opts for slower acceleration, lower top speed, slower charging speed" as some of its advantages over Musk's popular car.They also noted BYD's battery technology (coined cell-to-body), allows for more in-vehicle legroom, a unique car shape, improved performance, and — given the tech introduces a more efficient way of integrating the battery — lower manufacturing costs."The floor carpet of the passenger cabin is directly above the battery cell stack, and the top cover of the battery pack serves as the floor of the car body, eliminating one more layer of aluminum or steel," UBS analysts noted. "Such a thin battery pack occupies less floor space than others, allowing the car's profile to be low, which reduces aerodynamic resistance and creates a more spacious interior for drivers and passengers."UBS also said that, when comparing power performance, cost efficiency, and energy density, the BYD Seal's electric system "is in-line with the competition despite being at the relatively lower end of the range, especially compared to the leading solution provided by Tesla's Model 3."Interestingly, unlike Tesla, BYD seems to be steering clear from autonomous driving technology, and instead, is opting for a standard, Level 2, advanced driver assistance system. The company is also outsourcing this tech instead of developing it in-house.<div type="image" title="The XPeng G6 electric SUV." height="4000" width="6000" msid="103614739" hostid="261"></div><h2>Other automakers should worry</h2>At a high level, UBS analysts said the BYD Seal is "cost competitive, thanks to its vertical integration, suitable specs, and volume scale."That's exactly what a lot of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-auto-sales-tech-features-leaving-american-automakers-behind-2023-7">Chinese carmakers</a> have going for them. BYD and other Chinese firms like Geely, Li Auto, and XPeng are tech-savvy, have longstanding advantages in terms of the EV <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-united-states-electric-vehicle-market-share-auto-brands-pricing-2023-1">battery supply chain</a>, and easily churn out EVs with greater scale at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheap-chinese-electric-cars-will-upend-the-us-vehicle-market-2023-5">lower costs</a>.UBS analysts did note that incumbent automakers, like BYD, have an advantage over the younger Chinese companies, but that all are progressing.That growth is not only in China (where Chinese auto firms are expected to outpace foreign companies this year for the first time), but in Europe, too. China is exporting autos at a rapid pace, and Chinese companies dominated conversations at the recent Munich auto show, historically heavily influenced by German carmakers."Heading into the EV era, there is essentially little price gap between foreign and Chinese brands, and the volume could even be higher on Chinese side," the UBS analysts wrote in their note. "Given the Chinese EV development cycle is still faster than that of the foreign brands, we believe Chinese brands' market share gains from foreign brands will be structural and continuous."And experts suggest it's not unlikely they'll find success in the US in the near future, too."Chinese carmakers currently have systematic EV cost advantages versus US and European incumbents while offering wider product line-ups than Tesla and covering more segments (especially mass market)," they added.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz expects <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> to become its third biggest market in its 'Region Overseas' over the next 2-3 years with demand anticipated to remain strong for luxury products, according to a senior company executive. The Region Overseas for <keyword id="20034825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes-benz" source="keywords">Mercedes Benz</keyword> comprises 118 countries, excluding North America, Europe and China. India is the fifth largest market in the region after Japan, South Korea, Australia and Turkey. The sales gap between India and Turkey is around 8,000 units per year. "Our Region Overseas markets which encompass 118 markets across the world and India happens to be market number five for us. So you can imagine the relevance and importance it serves not only today, but also for the future of the Mercedes Benz brand," Mercedes-Benz AG Head of Region Overseas, <keyword id="20836954" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sagree-sardien" source="keywords">Sagree Sardien</keyword> told reporters here. When asked about the expected timeframe to achieve the target, she stated, "We are convinced that with the way the Indian market is developing, we should see this happening in the next two to three years." Terming India a strategic market for the brand, <keyword id="20836953" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sardien" source="keywords">Sardien</keyword> noted that the company has seen sales of its high-end models grow in double digits for the last couple of years and expects the same to continue this year and beyond. She noted that the company will add 12 new models, including three battery electric vehicles, in the market this year. The company also plans to tap smaller cities as it looks to establish sales outlets in 10 new locations ranging from Jammu to <keyword id="19910725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kottayam" source="keywords">Kottayam</keyword> to scale operations, Sardien stated. Mercedes-Benz India reported its highest ever sales of 17,408 units in 2023. Sardien said the electrification journey in India is picking up slowly for Mercedes-Benz with 4 per cent of total sales in the country coming from EVs. "I completely believe that we will see a double-digit (growth) in electrification for our product range within this market," she said. "Customers' preferences are obviously at a much slower pace than the demand we expected," she said adding the company would go according to the transformation of customers. Sardien noted that the company will not change its strategic direction. "It is clear that the future is electric for us, but we ensure that we cater for our customers' changing preferences and where market conditions are actually allowing," she said. When asked about the potential of the overall luxury car market in India, Sardien said it can touch 1 lakh unit mark probably by the end of this decade. "But I think there are some fundamental things that need to happen in the market and it is highly dependent on how customers transition here between the combustion engine and the battery electric vehicle architecture," she added. The luxury car market in India is around 47,000 units per annum and remains a miniscule part of the overall passenger vehicle segment which crossed the 41 lakh units mark last year.
