New Delhi, Jul 6 () The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) has introduced a course on UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 in its B Tech curriculum, becoming the first IIT to do so, officials said. It will be offered to second year B Tech students as a compulsory course, to reorient the thinking of young and dynamic individuals towards the path of sustainable development, they said. According to officials, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the 17 SDGs, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the nodal department for this course, has collaborated and pooled resources from eight other departments of the institute to design and implement the course. Faculty members from each of these departments will jointly conduct the course and will provide exposure to B Tech students on the technological, economical, ecological and societal aspects of the 17 SDGs. "With only 10 more years remaining to fulfil these objectives, it becomes very vital that the students are taught about the goals of inclusive and sustainable growth and through this course, offered by faculty members from across engineering, science and humanities departments, to prepare the students to play leading roles in 'Transforming the World," said T G Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati. Anamika Barua, course coordinator from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, said, "This would be the first time the nine departments of IIT Guwahati have joined together to offer a course at the undergraduate level, realising that sustainability challenges and inclusive growth go hand-in-hand and has to be understood at the crossroads of science and society through an interdisciplinary lens". Faculty members from all the nine disciplines will contribute in demonstrating the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach of sustainability, officials said. Several case studies will be used to demonstrate the ways of realising the SDGs and the strategies needed to move towards a sustainable pattern of development, they said. The case studies will include topics from multiple disciplines such as growth, inclusive society, sustainable cities, transport, designs, technology, digital revolution, sustainable production and consumption etc. The course will also highlight the ways of financing the SDGs, the new financing mechanisms and global fund as well implementing SDGs through governance and policy tools, they said. Several IITs like Gandhinagar, Mandi, Patna, Indore etc are breaking away from the old-school method of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=teaching">teaching</a> and disciplining students. 
 
For instance, IIT Gandhinagar is not policing students and have given freedom to pupils to define their own limitations. 
 
“IIT Gandhinagar believes in giving freedom to its students by treating them like adults. There is no policing on campus. Our students are allowed to define their own limitations. We do not keep tabs on their movements within the campus; neither do we track their attendance," director, SK Jain, told Economic Times. 
 
IITs, which were mostly built after 2008, are engaged in brand-building to click with potential students. 
 While, <keyword id="666989" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Indore">IIT Indore</keyword> has revamped its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=B+Tech">BTech curriculum</a> to give its students more time for research projects, IIT Patna and Mandi are trying to integrate some of their courses with the heritage and culture of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, respectively. 
 
"IIT Patna will take seriously its original charter of focusing on interdisciplinary research," Ajay Chowdhary, chairman - board of governors, told ET. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> will 'serious' tag to the <keyword id="530930" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-IITs">new IITs</keyword> - Palakkad and Tirupati. 
 
IIT Ropar is giving unlimited access to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=internet">internet</a> to students, which is not the case in many IITs. 
 
IITs, which will begin with first academic session soon, are also getting retired professors. 
 
"Retired faculty is around 50% of total faculty at these two institutes. The remaining will come from IIT Madras. It is the faculty that defines an institute and we want to ensure that Tirupati and Palakkad have the best," IIT Madras director, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, told ET. 
 
IIT Indore too is tapping overseas talent and IIT Mandi too is aligning some of its courses and research with the Himalayan region.

We are aware of poor job readiness. As we explore the web of issues starting from mis-aligned curriculum, poor teaching quality, and lacking formative (K12) capabilities, lack of exposure continues to be a very important area. 
 A continuous feedback or rather criticism from companies that hire young <keyword id="6356184" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="talent">talent</keyword> is the sheer lack of exposure in our young graduates. This lack of exposure not only affects the growth of the individual’s career but increases early attrition and, more importantly, desists companies from <keyword id="6357342" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword> fresh talent. 
 
The criticism is two-fold. Firstly, students do not know what kind of work or responsibilities a particular job entails. They are not aware of what work they would be required to do, how a typical day would look like and hence what skills they would need to have to do well in the job.

Internships improve their understanding of the role/sector and guide them towards making the right career move in the future. Our educational ecosystem has neglected internships for a long period of time. Despite internships being a part of every course curriculum, providing access to right kind of internships has been fairly difficult.
