New Delhi, From appealing people not to vote for them to flaunting the unsuccessful tag, changing name in each election to losing huge sums of money in security deposits -- some tenacious <keyword id="20022603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="independent" source="keywords">Independent</keyword> candidates have tried these all but losing elections became a habit for them. Tamil Nadu's K Padmarajan, who proudly calls himself the "Election King", might be the only candidate in the election fray who urges people not to vote for him, so he can retain his tag of being "most unsuccessful candidate", a feat also registered in the Limca Book of records. The 65-year-old tyre repair shop owner also finds pride in his entry in the <keyword id="19981515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="guinness-book-of-world-records" source="keywords">Guinness Book of World Records</keyword> for candidate with most contested elections. He claims to have lost Rs 80 lakh so far in security deposits which gets forfeited every time he loses an election besides expenses for filing nomination amid fanfare. Gearing up for his 239th attempt, Padmarajan has filed his nomination for the 18th <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections from Thrissur in Kerala and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. "I began fighting elections in 1988 from my home town of Mettur, located in Tamil Nadu. I have contested 238 elections so far including against former prime ministers <keyword id="20374221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atal-bihar-vajpayee" source="keywords">Atal Bihar Vajpayee</keyword>, P V Narsimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. This will be my 239th attempt. I pick a unique battle every time," he told PTI. Asked about his campaign plans, Padmarajan said, "I ask people not vote for me, I don't want the votes but I want to continue to hold the tag of most unsuccessful candidate. I don't campaign but when I go for filing nomination, I do that in a grand way." From former chief ministers like Jayalalitha, M Karunanidhi, YSR Reddy and AK Antony to filmstars Hema Malini and Vijayakanth -- the list of bigwigs against whom Padmarajan has contested is long. Indore's Parmanand <keyword id="21190647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tolani" source="keywords">Tolani</keyword> is taking forward his father's legacy who fought elections as independent candidate for three decades. "My father passed away in 1988 and I am taking forward his legacy. I have contested 18 elections so far including eight Lok Sabha and eight Vidhan Sabha. I will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls too," 65-year-old Tolani told PTI. "My father's wish was that we do not have to stop the trend till someone from the family gets elected. If I am not able to do it in my lifetime, my two daughters will carry forward the baton," said Tolani, who is a property broker. <keyword id="21190648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-prakash-kodekar" source="keywords">Vijay Prakash Kodekar</keyword> from <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword>, a retired staffer from state electricity board, has a different agenda behind contesting elections as independent candidate -- advocating zero budget poll campaigns. He can be seen pushing a steel cart on wheels in streets of Latur, where he is planning to contest the Lok Sabha polls. A flex board on the cart says "Main bhi Pradhanmantri". "The message why cannot any poor individual be the Prime Minister of the country. Why this exorbitant expenditure by parties on election campaigns? Polls can be fought on zero budget and the money can be utilised for public welfare," said 78-year-old Kodekar, who campaigns wearing a white dhoti. Having contested 24 elections so far, Kodekar uses a different name for different elections. "Some elections I have contested using the name Vijay, some with 'Rashtrapati' and some with the name 'Znyosho' -- as I am a disciple of Osho. I complete the name change formalities and then I contest the polls using the new name," he said. Hyderabad techie Ravinder Uppula, uses different campaign strategies for each Lok Sabha election he fights. In 2014 -- it was anti-corruption march and in 2019 it was a liquid only fast. "I promise during my campaign that if I get elected, I will get a lie detector test done every 100 days so public who votes for me doesn't feel cheated. That is how our politicians should do as well to weed out corruption," he said. Uppula, however, is disappointed with the poll campaign expenses. "It should not be an expensive deal to canvass in this country, an agenda and the right promise should be enough rather than the poll fray leaving the voters with no choice except voting for a smaller thief or a bigger thief," he added. The strange obsession of the independent candidates has also been featured in the book "The Power of The Ballot: Travail and Triumph in the Elections". Sharing the saga of some of the independent candidates' stint at the elections, the book decodes "why do some people contest every time knowing they will lose?" Kaka Joginder Singh, also known as "Dhartipakad", was a textile-shop owner who contested and lost over 300 elections. He died in 1998. In elections, he always contested independently, and always lost his security deposits. He earned the nickname Dhartipakad after several unsuccessful runs for the post of the President of India. The year with the greatest yield for him was during the tenth presidential elections in 1992 in which he earned fourth place in the polling with 1,135 votes, losing to Shankar Dayal Sharma; it was his best performance. He also contested elections from 14 states of India in the 1990s, mostly for state assemblies. Singh died in 1998. Long before <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> chose Varanasi as an election destination, the city had Narendra Nath Dubey "Adig". Often referred to as Kashi's Dhartipakad, he has been fighting every election as an independent candidate since 1984, losing his security deposit each time. He passed away in 2022.

MLA Narayan Dutt Sharma, who quit the AAP recently, will contest the February 8 Delhi Assembly election from his Badarpur constituency on a BSP ticket. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) announced its first list of 42 candidates. The party has decided to field its nominess in all 70 seats in Delhi. Another list is expected on Sunday. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) denied Sharma ticket this time and has fielded Ram Singh Netaji, a Congress leader and former MLA who joined the party recently. Ram Singh Netaji had won the Assembly elections in 2008 from Badarpur on a BSP ticket. The BSP won two seats in the 2008 elections. Of the 42 candidates fielded by the BSP on Saturday, eight belong to the Scheduled Castes.

The SP-BSP has together managed to win 15 seats. IndiaToday-AxisMyIndia exit polls 2019 predicts that Mayavati’s BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) is set to win from 16 seats in Uttar Pradesh. This number is the total seats the party will get in the state along with its allies SP and RLD. IN 2019 elections, BSP nominated its candidates from 38 seats. As per the seat sharing arrangement, SP contested from 37 seats and RLD faced the elections from 3 seats. Mayavati has chosen not to contest in 2019 Lok Sabha elections in order to focus more on the election campaign for the victory of her Mahagathbandhan. As per the Chanakya-News24 Exit Poll, the BSP- SP and RLD coalition might win 13 out of 80 seats with over 65 seats predicted for the BJP from the state and just 2 seats predicted for the Congress party. Uttar Pradesh state has the largest number of parliamentary seats in the country numbering 80 in total. In 2014 elections for the Lok Sabha, BSP could not get a single seat in UP. In 2009 elections, BSP got 20 seats from UP leaving BJP with just 10 seats. In 2004 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections, the results gave the party 19 seats and 14 seats respectively. Talking of the vote share in 2014 elections, BSP had got 19.6 % votes in the state while the BJP had got 42.3 % votes. Some of the key candidates like Haji Fazulrahman contested for Saharanpur seat, Girish Chandra was nominated by the party from Nagina (SC) and Amar Chandra Jauhar faced the elections from Shahjahanpur (SC). While nominating their candidates as per the seat sharing agreement, BSP and SP gave two seats for RLD. These two parties have decided not to contest in the two constituencies of Amethi and Raebareli from where the Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are contesting.

Out of the 1,463 candidates in the poll fray in the second phase of <keyword id="9317522" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-bihar-assembly">the Bihar Assembly</keyword> elections, 502 have criminal cases against them of which 389 are serious, a report claimed on Tuesday. The report was released by <keyword id="10176486" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-bihar-election-watch">the Bihar Election Watch</keyword> and the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) after analysing the self-sworn affidavits of all the 1,463 candidates contesting in the Bihar Assembly Elections Phase II. The second phase of the polls is scheduled in 94 <keyword id="68073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assembly-constituencies">Assembly constituencies</keyword> in 17 districts on November 3. The report said that out of the 1,463 candidates analyzed, 502, which is 34 per cent, candidates have declared criminal cases against them. "While 389 candidates, which is 27 per cent of 1,463 candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves," the report said. The report also claimed that the <keyword id="123786" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Janata-Dal">Rashtriya Janata Dal</keyword> (RJD) has the maximum candidates with criminal cases registered against them followed by the BJP. It said, "Out of 56 RJD candidates, 36, which is 64 per cent, candidates have criminal cases against them, followed by the BJP with 29 out of 46 candidates which is 63 per cent." The report pointed out that out of the 24 Congress candidates, 14 have criminal cases against them which is 58 per cent, and out of 52 Lok Jan Shakti Party candidates 28, which is 54 per cent, also have criminal cases. The report pointed out that the ruling Janata Dal- United (JD-U) has the least number of candidates with criminal cases. "Out of 33 candidates in the second phase, 16, which is 49 per cent candidates from the BSP have criminal cases and from the JD-U, 20 out of 43 candidates, which is 47 per cent have declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits," the report said. The RJD again topped in the serious crime cases registered against candidates with 50 per cent, followed by the LJP with 46 per cent, the BJP with 44 per cent and the JD-U again at the bottom of the table with 35 per cent. The report said that out of the 50 candidates of the RJD, who were analysed, 28 have serious cases registered against them followed by the LJP with 24 out of 52 candidates, and 20 out of the 46 BJP candidates have serious cases against them. The report said that 14 out of the 33 candidates of the <keyword id="6356515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bahujan-samaj-party">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> (BSP), 10 out of 24 candidates of the Congress and 15 out of 43 candidates of the JD-U have serious criminal cases against them. It said that 49 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women, with four of them facing charges of rape. The report noted that 32 candidates are facing cases related to murder while 143 candidates are facing cases related to attempt to murder. It also said that in the second phase Assembly polls, 84 out of the 94 constituencies are red alert ones, which is a total of 89 per cent. According to the ADR, red alert constituencies are those where three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases registered against them. The report said that the directions of the Supreme Court have had no effect on the political parties in the selection of the candidates in Bihar as they have again followed their old practice of giving tickets to around 34 per cent candidates with criminal cases. It said all major parties contesting in Bihar second phase elections have given tickets to 47 per cent to 64 per cent candidates, who have declared criminal cases against them. It said the Supreme Court in its directions dated February 13 had specifically instructed the political parties to give reasons for such selection and why other individuals without criminal antecedents could not be selected as candidates. As per these mandatory guidelines, the candidates have to be selected with reference to qualifications, achievements and merit.
