New Delhi, People have reposed their faith in "<keyword id="19699064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="modis-guarantees" source="Orion">Modi's guarantees</keyword>," BJP leaders chimed together on Sunday as the party appeared set on the path of victory in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh assembly elections. "The election results show people accept Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guarantee of delivering on guarantees," BJP leader and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said here. Joshi, who was BJP's election-in-charge for Rajasthan, took a dig at the Congress and promises it made in the run up to the elections. "People have blessed BJP in three states, endorsed Prime Minister Modi's leadership and rejected Congress' false promises," Joshi said. Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and BJP leader Raman Singh said in Raipur,"People have reposed their trust in Modi's guarantees." Singh said the people have voted in the name of Modi and for his work over the past nine-and-half years. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan -- who is looking at his fifth term -- gave Modi's aggressive campaign ahead of the assembly election the credit for the party's performance. "Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is in the hearts of the people of Madhya Pradesh. The state is also in the heart of Modi ji. There is immense faith towards him. He held public meetings here and appealed to the people which has touched the people's hearts," Chouhan said in Bhopal. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said it was Modi's belief in taking everyone together that worked for the party. "This victory is of the mantra of 'Sabka saath, sabka vishwas and sabka prayaas' given by Prime Minister Modi. It is the victory of the guarantee given by the Prime Minister. It is also the victory of the strategy given by Amit Shah and the able leadership provided by Nadda ji," she said. "Most importantly, it is a victory for our party workers," Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the party's victory as a result of guidance of PM Modi. "Under the leadership and guidance of respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, BJP's hattrick of huge majority in terms election results in three of the four states, is a 'guarantee of people's trust' on the 'guarantee of Modi,'" he wrote on X. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said the victory was an indicator of what is to come in 2024. "The Ghamandiya alliance's arrogance has been shattered. The INDI alliance has neither leaders, nor policy... For 2024, the indication is clear, the world has faith in India and India's leadership. If India progresses, the world will progress," Thakur said. In Chhattisgarh, the BJP manifesto -- 'Modi ki Guarantee 2023' -- promised cooking gas cylinders at Rs 500 to poor families, one lakh government jobs, and a Rs 12,000 annual financial assistance to married women. The BJP had also promised to procure paddy at Rs 3,100 per quintal and an annual assistance of Rs 10,000 to land less farm labourers. Free food grain, income assistance for farmers, housing for all, 100 per cent electrification of villages, and tap water to every home, were listed by the party as some of Modi's guarantees. "All promises made to you will be fulfilled. This is my guarantee," Modi had said addressing a rally in MP last month. During several of rallies he took a dig at the Congress for its set of promises. "Those who do not have any guarantee about themselves are offering guarantees to the people," Modi had said at a rally in MP. "Modi's guarantees begin from where hope from others ends. That is why Modi's guarantees are popular," the prime minister had said on the campaign trail. In Jaipur, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat took a jibe at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying people have come out of the spell of the "magician." "The 'magic' has ended and Rajasthan has come out of the spell of the magician. People have voted for the honour of women and for the welfare of the poor," he said. Gehlot was born into a family of magicians and assisted his father during his tours. Congress had unleashed the politics of guarantee during Karnataka assembly elections in May, making five distinct promises to the electorate - monthly cash assistance to women head of families, 200 units of free electricity, unemployment allowance to youth, free food grains, and free travel for women on state transport buses. The party tried to replicate the template in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Rajasthan. Modi turned on the heat on the Congress by projecting himself as a leader who has delivered on the promises made by him to help the common man meet his aspirations. "Modi Yaani Har Guarantee Poori Hone Ki Guarantee (Modi means the guarantee to fulfill every guarantee)," the prime minister had said in an article last week. "'Modi Ki Guarantee' denotes Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to the aspirations of the common man. It echoes the resolution of his government to serve the last man standing. It allows us to witness a political phenomenon, hitherto missing, where promises carry meaning and are executed meaningfully," he had said. Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina said, "Today, the Congress headquarters in MP, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are wearing a deserted look. The Congress and National Conference will face the same fate during assembly polls in J-K." The race amongst political parties to offer freebies to the voters triggered a debate on burden on the state exchequer.

Victory of Modi's guarantees, say BJP leaders as party sweeps states states

NEW DELHI: Less than a month after the big-bang release of its poll anthem, BJP has quietly dropped the campaign song as its over-the-top projection of <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> was found to be an aggressive overkill. 
 The anthem’s lines spoken by Modi — “main desh nahin jhukne dunga ... main desh nahin mitne dunga (I will not let the nation bow down/be rubbed out)” — are seen as needlessly dire and apocalyptic. “The suggestion that the nation faces a threat to its existence is unwarranted. Getting Modi to speak the lines was also not a good decision as he comes through in ‘hard’ tones,” said a <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword>. 
 
Party sources said Modi’s team had not been fully comfortable with the anthem’s pitch and formulation but had gone along with the assessment of the central campaign managers. By mid-April — the anthem was released on March 25 — there was a fairly wide consensus in the BJP brass that the theme needed to be further tweaked by projecting Modi in softer hues. 
 The Gujarat CM has taken the call himself, deciding to avoid a polarizing approach in his campaign in north Bihar, despite some BJP leaders feeling a political point could be made on JD (U) <keyword id="53129" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="candidate">candidate</keyword> Akhtarul Iman retiring from the fray in Kishanganj to facilitate “Muslim unity” against BJP. 
 
The saffron campaign is now expected to further elaborate on the “Modi aa gaya” theme with specifics like his pitch for “minimum government, maximum governance”. 
 
 
 
Modi’s recent campaign pitch, seeking 300 seats for NDA, aims at pulling in the floating vote while ensuring that supporters are motivated to turn out and vote. 
 
BJP managers, wary of criticism that the party is indulging in triumphalism, are concentrating on specific messages like “beti bachao, beti padao (save the girl child, educate her)” and job-oriented economic growth. 
 
It was also felt that a strongly negative campaign against the shortcomings of the ruling UPA had served its purpose and with feedback indicating a pro-Modi mood, the message now needs to be a lot less darker. 
 
The first hint that the anthem, composed by Prasoon Joshi and sung by Sukhwinder, may need to be altered came when BJP’s campaign advertisements were edited to retain only the lines spoken by Modi. 
 But these too have been withdrawn as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate focuses on “positive” change as the 2014 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> election moves into its last phases with Modi seeking a clear mandate from voters. 
 
BJP leaders involved in planning Modi’s campaign said the party was making a big effort to “tap the vote” through booth level organization and using call centres to monitor voter response to the party’s poll pitch. 
 
In UP, for example, some 50-odd cells have been formed to coordinate various aspects of the campaign ranging from dispatch of video raths and identifying constituencies and areas needing last minute attention by way of resources or campaigns.

Facebook row escalates as BJP leader asks for Shashi Tharoor's removal from Parliamentary Panel

NEW DELHI: A reference by Gujarat CM <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> to <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> leader <keyword id="51730" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ahmed-Patel">Ahmed Patel</keyword> as a "good friend" who has stopped taking calls was edited out by Doordarshan when the national broadcaster telecast an interview with Modi on Sunday. 
 
"Ahmedbhai is among the best friends I have in Congress but not now… I had a good friendship with him and would have preferred that it had remained so… but he now runs away from me and doesn't take my calls," Modi said in the interview. 
 
When contacted, Patel told TOI, "This is election time and people say all sorts of things. I would not have liked to comment otherwise but this is part of his by-now familiar devious script, so I do wish to put it on record that to the best of my recollection, I had lunch with him once in 1980s. That was in the knowledge of my leadership. I have clarified this earlier also. I have not had even a cup of tea with him since he became chief minister in 2001." 
 Modi's suggestion that he has been on good terms with Congress chief <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword>'s political secretary and the two have even dined at one another's homes is among the bits that DD chose not to telecast, sparking a controversy over the interview being "censored". 
 The Modi campaign beat DD's bid to edit what the national broadcaster considered "sensitive" bits by posting the entire unedited interview on the <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword>'s website. It is understood that the interview was separately recorded by the Gujarat government. 
 
DD's decision to telecast Modi's interview without any publicity and its editing out of certain remarks was reported by TOI on Thursday. In all, some 20 minutes of the 56-minute interview were not telecast. 
 
Responding to a question why he sought to bait Patel as "mian Ahmed", Modi said the term was a mark of respect and that he affectionately referred to Patel as "babubhai" in private. 
 
 
 
Another bite snipped out of the interview, as reported by TOI, was Modi's reference to Priyanka Gandhi as a "daughter" defending her family, a reference dismissed by Priyanka on Thursday with a curt comment that Rajiv Gandhi was her father. 
 
Asked how he reacted to Priyanka's criticism of him, Modi said, "I don't take it seriously. Any daughter would do the same for brother and her mother… akhir beti, beti hai (after all a daughter is a daughter). I would not mind her saying anything… If she abuses me ten times more, it will still be a case of a daughter being a daughter." 
 
DD director general (news) S M Khan in a statement denied there was any attempt to downplay the interview or deliberately edit it. He said the editing was done for technical reasons. 
 
Contrary to the official statement, sources said responses to several queries including former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf were edited out. 
 
DD anchor Ashok Shrivastav questioned Modi about his disparaging reference to Musharraf as "Mian Musharraf" in a 2002 speech. "No country however powerful has the right to insult my nation or my state… I raised my voice because he (Musharraf) abused us (by raising the Gujarat riots) at the UN platform," Modi said. 
 
The BJP leader said the Congress strategy to align with a possible third front was to keep BJP from coming to power. But he asserted that the days of the "maa-bete ki sarkar (mother-son government)" were numbered. He added that Congress, having initially misread the strength of the BJP campaign, was now trying to ensure that either the NDA did not form a government or if it did, it would be a weak one. 
 
When contacted, Shrivastav refused to comment on the "edits" but social media was on fire with several people demanding the complete interview be uploaded in the interest of transparency. Shrivastav on Thursday tweeted, "Original interview was 56 minutes but I got half an hour chunk. We telecast 34 minutes… Professionally I feel we should have telecast full version." 
 
On the editing of the interview, Shrivastav said he was not the final word on what went on air. "Professionally, I also feel that portion is important shouldn't edited (sic). I am not final authority," he said. He also confirmed that Modi's office had independently recorded the interview and had a copy. 
 
Reacting to TOI's report, DD's Khan said in a statement, "There was no deliberate editing or omission of any portion of interview. Wherever editing was done was for technical reasons and during post production. There was no interference or control from any authority in the entire process."

DD Edited Out Narendra Modi's Reference To Ahmed Patel As 'Good Friend'

NEW DELHI: The incoming <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government may well corner credit for key anti-corruption and pro-governance bills that UPA-II failed to pass despite a last minute bid to push the legislations through Parliament. 
 
The Modi government will take a call on UPA-II’ s unfinished agenda with cabinet secretary Ajit Seth asking ministries to compile a list of ordinances, pending and lapsed bills that would put up before the new regime.

 The bills include anti-corruption and public service measures the <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> government had, under <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> vice president Rahul Gandhi’s prodding, tried to legislate before dissolution of the 15th <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword>. 
 
In a communication to secretaries, Seth said "Ministers\departments may in all such cases take a view in the matter with the approval of the new minister-in-charge as soon as the new government is sworn in.” 
 
Seth has advised ministries that they can frame "suitable proposals for consideration of the Cabinet after requisite inter-ministerial consultations” once it becomes clear that whether the bills are to be dropped, altered or retained. 
 BJP seems inclined to review the bills. "Some of the bills can be improved. Some of the acts that have been passed can be amended and some pending bills may not be priority any more,” a <keyword id="6464304" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Senior-BJP-leader">senior BJP leader</keyword> said.

The bills present an opportunity for the new government, as they have been framed by the Congress-led UPA and the former ruling party would ordinarily not oppose their passage. This should help NDA as it lacks numbers in the upper House. 
 
Bills seeking to amend the prevention of corruption act, judicial appointments, right to services and introduction of auctions in mining contracts are among 60 pending and 68 lapsed bills.

Secretaries have been asked to discuss the bills with new ministers at the earliest to get a view if they are to be pursued in their present form or changes are required to be carried out. 
 
The note, brought out in the form of an office memorandum of the Cabinet Secretariat, also mentioned that a similar view will also need to be taken about Ordinances promulgated by President Pranab Mukherjee. 
 
"These will now be required to be placed for consideration of the Cabinet”, said the note.

The Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill and the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2013 were introduced in the Rajya Sabha by the UPA-II government. 
 
The Bills, which are lapsed due to dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha, include the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill, the mines and minerals (Development and Regulation) Bill, the Electronic Delivery of Services Bill and the Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill.

Narendra Modi Government May Take Up Bills UPA Failed To Pass

NEW DELHI: A long and bruising election season will end on Monday with polling in 41 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seats that could have a crucial bearing on BJP's final tally. Today also marks the last chance for regional heavyweights Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party to check the saffron advance. 
 The 18 seats in east Uttar Pradesh that go to polls include Varanasi, where BJP’s prime ministerial candidate <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> is locked in a blockbuster battle with Aam Aadmi Party chief <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> and <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>'s local challenger Ajay Rai. 
 
The temple town has turned into a fortress with over 45,000 security personnel being deployed to ensure free and fair polls today. Senior police officers have descended here to personally assess the situation. Central paramilitary forces have been deployed in all the 1,562 polling stations which are also under CCTV coverage. 
 
The election took a bitter turn after BJP accused the DM and returning officer, Pranjal Yadav, of bias and demanded his removal after he controversially refused permision to Modi to hold a rally in the Muslim-dominated locality of Beniabagh. The EC strongly defended the officer but eventually appointed a special observer for the poll, whose result will be keenly watched across India. 
 
Also in the fray today is SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, looking to make a statement in Azamgarh, a constituency with a large number of Yadav and Muslim voters. 
 
Contest in UP could be highly polarized 
 
The contest in UP could be highly polarized with BJP accusing Mulayam of nurturing a “base of terror” — a thinly disguised code for minority appeasement while the SP boss has urged voters to remember all that he has done for them. 
 
BJP is hoping for a strong performance in the closing phase of the election as this will be essential to meet its target of 50 seats in the populous state. By the same measure, it is an opportunity for SP and BSP to work traditional caste equations in order to check Modi fair and square. 
 
In next door Bihar, similar calculations are at work on six seats with estranged allies BJP and Janata Dal (U) holding two seats each. This time JD(U) seems squeezed out of the contest and the clash is between BJP and the RJD-Congress combine. The seats include Gopalganj, the ancestral home of RJD chief Lalu Prasad. 
 
Of the seats in UP, SP holds six seats, followed by BSP with five, BJP with four and Congress with three. In West Bengal, 17 seats go to polls and of these, Trinamool Congress holds 14 seats, while Congress, CPI and Independent have one each. 
 
Stakes are fairly high for Trinamool that has to defend its seats and hopes to gain a few though it must contend with urban constituencies where there is a perceived drift away from it and BJP has emerged a new party of choice for voters. 
 Prominent leaders in the fray in the three stated include Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary (Behrampur, West Bengal), <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword> Jagdambika Pal (Domariyaganj), Union minister RPN Singh (Kushi Nagar, both UP) and former minister and RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (Vaishali, Bihar). 
 
There has been a record turnout of voters, surpassing the previous record in 1984, as 66.27% voting was reported in 502 Lok Sabha seats where polling has been conducted in eight phases that began on April 7. 
 
In West Bengal, prominent TMC candidates in the race are Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Dinesh Trivedi and Saugata Roy besides celebrities like actors Dipak Adhikari (Dev) and Tapas Paul. 
 Trinamool Yuva <keyword id="2540" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="President">president</keyword> Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, is also in the fray.

The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> today sought responses from senior <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword> L K Advani and others on a plea against dropping of criminal conspiracy charge against them in the Babri mosque <keyword id="6367653" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Demolition">demolition</keyword> case. 
 A bench headed by <keyword id="42759" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Chief-Justice">Chief Justice</keyword> H L Dattu issued notices to the BJP leader and the CBI on a separate plea filed by Haji Mahboob Ahmad, one of the petitioners in the Babri mosque case. 
 
 
Ahmad, in his plea, has alleged that CBI may dilute its stand in the wake of the change in the government at the Centre. 
 Earlier, the CBI had moved the apex court against <keyword id="48834" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Allahabad-High-Court">Allahabad High Court</keyword>'s verdict on dropping conspiracy charge against Advani and 19 others in Babri mosque demolition case. 
 
 
During the brief hearing, CBI today sought time for filing a fresh affidavit on delay in filing the appeal and on the merits of the case. 
 
The court allowed the plea of the probe agency and granted four weeks time to file the response. 
 
The apex court had earlier pulled up CBI for the delay in filing an appeal against the Allahabad High Court verdict. 
 
 
CBI has challenged in the Supreme Court the May 21, 2010 order of the high court, which had upheld a special court's decision to drop the charge against the leaders. 
 In its verdict, the high court had upheld the special <keyword id="6362306" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CBI-court">CBI court</keyword> order dropping conspiracy charge against Advani, <keyword id="6361634" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kalyan-Singh">Kalyan Singh</keyword>, <keyword id="42642" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uma-Bharti">Uma Bharti</keyword>, Vinay Katiyar and Murli Manohar Joshi. 
 
The others against whom the charge was dropped included Satish Pradhan, C R Bansal, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Sadhvi Ritambhara, V H Dalmia, Mahant Avaidhynath, R V Vedanti, Param Hans Ram Chandra Das, Jagdish Muni Maharaj, B L Sharma, Nritya Gopal Das, Dharam Das, Satish Nagar and Moreshwar Save. 
 
Bal Thackeray's name was removed from the list of accused persons after his death. 
 
While upholding the special court's order, the high court 
 
 While upholding the special court's order, the high court had allowed CBI to proceed with other charges against Advani and others in a <keyword id="2788382" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rae-Bareily-court">Rae Bareily court</keyword>, under whose jurisdiction the case falls. 
 
The May 2010 order of the high court had said there was no merit in CBI's revision petition against the May 4, 2001 order of the special court which had directed dropping of criminal conspiracy charge against them. 
 
 
There are two sets of cases -- one against Advani and others who were on the dais at Ram Katha Kunj in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 when the Babri mosque was demolished, while the other case was against lakhs of unknown 'karsevaks' who were in and around the disputed structure. 
 
CBI had charge sheeted Advani and 20 others under sections 153A (promoting enmity between classes), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 505 (false statements, rumours etc. circulated with the intent to cause mutiny or disturb public peace) of the IPC. 
 
It had subsequently invoked charges under section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC which was quashed by the special court whose decision was upheld by the high court. 
While upholding the special court's order, the high court had said CBI at no point of time, either during the trial at Rae Bareily or in its revision petition, ever stated that there was offence of criminal conspiracy against the leaders.
