NEW DELHI: Reconciled to a near-inevitable break-up with <keyword id="6358821" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiv-Sena">Shiv Sena</keyword>, BJP on Sunday rolled out a plan to contest all 288 seats in Maharashtra along with its smaller allies. 
 The decision was taken by the party’s central election committee (CEC) after <keyword id="114039" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP-chief">BJP chief</keyword> <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Amit-Shah">Amit Shah</keyword> briefed Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> about the <keyword id="6394856" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sena">Sena</keyword>’s adamant posture on seat-sharing. The CEC also finalized candidates for all the seats. 
 <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword> Rajiv Pratap Rudy said after the meeting, "Maharashtra seats were discussed at the CEC meeting. Most of the candidates have been decided upon, and party president Amit Shah will announce these names. The political situation in Maharashtra was also discussed, and it was decided that efforts to continue with the alliance will be on, and we would want it to continue in the same spirit that the partnership has been going on for so long in a mutually respectful manner." 
 
With the process of filing nominations for the October 15 assembly polls not expected to gather momentum before September 25 because of the ongoing ‘inauspicious period of pitru paksha,’ both parties are considering waiting for another 72 hours before taking a final decision on the crucial alliance. 
 
"There is time till ‘shradh’ (which ends on September 24) for the tug-of-war to go on," a senior BJP leader said. 
 
 
Senior BJP leaders from Maharashtra, who were in New Delhi on Sunday to attend the party’s Parliamentary board meeting, sought the central leadership’s go-ahead to snap poll ties. BJP also rejected Sena’s latest formula which Uddhav Thackeray spelt out at a party jamboree held in a Bandra auditorium on Sunday. Thackeray said Sena would contest 151 seats and leave 119 for BJP and 18 for junior allies.

"This is all that I have to offer to BJP. If they reject this, then I am left with no other alternative," Thackeray told Shiv Sainiks. This is Uddhav’s lump-it-or-leave-it ultimatum to BJP, said observers. Like the Maharashtra BJP, Sena has asked all its party units across the state to be prepared to contest polls on their own strength, sources said. 
 
In his 45-minute speech, Thackeray gave ample indications that he was willing to plan Sena’s future minus BJP. "I will undoubtedly feel sorry if the alliance breaks... But if you are going to treat us like a blade of grass then our tigers are ready (to go solo)," he said. 
 
 
 
 
Urging Shiv Sainiks to remain united and stand behind the party leadership, Thackeray said, "This is our battle for survival... This is our final test. We will succeed if providence is on our side... We will fail if fate is not in our favour... Don’t forget that Chhatrapati Shivaji was born in Maharashtra and he took on the mighty Mughal rulers." 
 
Talking to mediapersons in New Delhi, BJP leaders Eknath Khadse and Vinod Tawde summarily dismissed Sena’s formula. Khadse said his party was not ready for any more sacrifices for the Sena’s sake. Both he and Tawde made it clear that extracting more seats from Sena was their party’s top priority. "The Maharashtra BJP’s strike rate was 60% in 2009, while the Sena’s strike rate was 40%," Khadse pointed out. 
 
Stating that BJP had offered its Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra to RPI leader Ramdas Athavale in the larger interest of the ‘maha yuti’, Khadse expressed shock and dismay that the Sena was not willing to part with a couple of assembly seats as compensation.

Earlier in the day, hours after Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's tough talk in Mumbai, BJP told its partner that it was the duty of both parties to continue the tie-up and sort out issues instead of going through the media, in remarks directed at the Sena chief. BJP also termed Thackeray's final offer to it as being “nothing new” as the party has been contesting on 119 seats ever since the partnership started 25 years ago. 
 
Tawde said Sena should accept BJP’s demand for re-allocation of assembly seats. "The number of seats which Sena lost in the last five elections is 59. We want these seats to be re-distributed," he stated. 
 
"The issue of seat-sharing issue can be sorted out mutually through face-to-face talks and not through media (TV)," Tawde added. 
 
Uddhav, too, used harsh words for the 25-year-old ally. Giving a lowdown on the seat-sharing talks, he said BJP’s Om Prakash Mathur came to him 10 days ago with the 135:135 formula. "I told him we should sit down and talk. We must iron out the issues between us. Mathur later came to see me with an offer of 145 seats... We will give you these many seats, he said. Who are they to give us?", he asked. 
 
Thackeray also referred to the 140:130 formula which state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis presented to him on Saturday. 
 
The thrust of Thackeray’s speech was that BJP was not ready to acknowledge Sena’s growing strength in Maharashtra and that Sena would not tolerate humiliation from its poll partner. "What is in our ‘naseeb’ (fate), no one can take away from us," he remarked. 
 
"We have respect for Narendra Modi. But he too was humiliated as a chaiwalla... Our Sainiks will assume power if Goddess Tulja Bhavani and Goddess Mahalakshmi bless them," he added. 
 
Recalling Sena-BJP’s halcyon days, Thackeray praised Pramod Mahajan and Gopinath Munde for leading the alliance. "Mahajan and Munde never stretched things too far. Our differences would never spiral out of control."

"I have no ego, no ambition. I have a high level of self-confidence… I want power in Maharashtra, not for any other reason but to accelerate Maharashtra’s development," said the Sena president. 
 
Senior Sena functionary Subhash Desai said there was no Modi wave in Maharashtra or elsewhere in the country. Why did the BJP lose heavily in recent by-elections if there was a Modi wave, Desai asked. 
 
Thackeray claimed Modi could continue as Gujarat CM after the Godhra episode because of Balasaheb Thackeray. "L K Advani had sought Balasaheb’s advice on whether to remove Modi as Gujarat CM following widespread clamour against him. Balasaheb told Advani to retain Modi, and described Modi as a ‘mard’ (brave man) and a ‘tiger’," Uddhav said. 
 
The smaller allies, meanwhile, gave a word of warning. Mahadeo Jankar of the Rashtriya Samaj Party asked the Sena-BJP to finalise the seat-sharing formula by Monday, failing which he and the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana led by Raju Shetti would walk out of the alliance. 
 
"If the differences over seat-sharing are not resolved by tomorrow, I and Raju Shetti will contest all the 288 assembly seats jointly," Jankar told agencies. The two parties would contest 144 seats each, he said. 
 
Ramdas Athavale of the RPI demanded 20 seats for the smaller allies. "Out of the 20 seats, RPI should get 10, five each from the Sena and BJP," he said.

Maha crisis: Fadvanis, Shinde to decide the next course of action

Aadesh Kumar Gupta replaces Manoj Tiwari as Delhi BJP chief

The 45-year-old will be the youngest chief minister of the state and replaces <keyword id="1498654" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tirath-Singh-Rawat">Tirath Singh Rawat</keyword>, who resigned on Friday night within four months of taking charge from <keyword id="2253089" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trivendra-Singh-Rawat">Trivendra Singh Rawat</keyword>. Dhami will be sworn in on Sunday, Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar told reporters after a legislature party meeting at the state BJP headquarters where he was a central observer. "My party has appointed a common worker, son of an ex-serviceman, who was born in the border district of Pithoragarh to serve the people. "We'll work on people's issues with the cooperation of all. I will carry forward the work done by my predecessors," Dhami, a two-time MLA from Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar district, said. As Dhami takes over less than a year ahead of the next assembly elections, his biggest challenge lies in leading the BJP to another victory and retaining power in Uttarakhand, where the party has been plagued by factionalism. Changing chief ministers twice in a short span has not helped the party's image, with the opposition Congress accusing it of causing "political instability" and betraying the people. "We accept the challenge and we will take forward the party and serve the people," Dhami said when asked whether taking over as CM just months ahead of assembly polls will be an uphill task. The chief minister-elect thanked the party leadership for reposing faith in him and said that he will work with everyone's cooperation. Dhami's name was proposed by outgoing chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat and Pradesh BJP president Madan Kaushik and seconded by a number of MLAs, including former chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tomar told reporters outside the state BJP headquarters here. No other name was proposed for BJP legislature party leader, Tomar said. Soon after his unanimous election as the BJP legislature party leader, Dhami headed for the Raj Bhawan along with a number of MLAs and the central observers to stake his claim to form the government. The BJP had replaced Trivendra Singh Rawat with Tirath Singh Rawat on March 10, hoping to go into the assembly polls with the new face, but he too was asked to step down as the Constitution required him to get elected as a member of the state assembly within six months of his appointment as CM and there seemed an increasing uncertainty over the Election Commission holding bypolls at this stage. The opposition Congress hit out at the BJP leadership, saying instead of ushering in development, it has thrown Uttarakhand into the throes of political instability and betrayed its people by repeatedly changing chief ministers. Pushkar Singh Dhami to be the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand replacing Tirath Singh Rawat

After three days of political upheavel, speculation in the state ended as Rawat submitted his resignation to Maurya after he reached the Raj Bhawan just past 4 p.m. The BJP legislative party will meet Wednesday morning to select the new Chief Minister of the state, a senior party leader said. He said that Rawat submitted his resignation as he was directed by the party central leadership to resign after discontent in the BJP legislative party. "After his meeting with central leadership yesterday in the national capital, it seems that BJP leadership has informed Rawat about possible change of leadership in the Uttarakhand government as there is a lot of resentment against him," he said. Uttarakhand BJP vice president Devendra Bhasin earlier told IANS that the Chief Minister was scheduled to address a press conference and likely make a crucial statement on political speculation going on in the state. Bhasin further stated that he heard that Uttarakhand BJP chief Banshidhar Bhagat has called a meeting of legislative party at 11 a.m. Wednesday. "I am not aware about the agenda of the legislative party but a meeting has been called tomorrow," Bhasin said. "After his meeting with central leadership yesterday in the national capital, it seems that BJP leadership has informed Rawat about possible change of leadership in the Uttarakhand government. Now he might step down from the office," another BJP leader said. On Monday evening, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief J.P. Nadda, National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh discussed the political development in the hill state. BJP National General Secretary and state in-charge, Dushyant Gautam was part of discussion. Meeting was called after several MLAs questioned Rawat's style of functioning. "Bureaucracy is getting more powerful and voices of elected representatives are unheard," said a party member from Uttarakhand. On Saturday, the BJP leadership sent former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and Gautam as observers to meet state leaders and get a feedback. "Both the leaders met the members of the core committee and took their opinion. Report was submitted to BJP leadership," said a party insider. It is learnt that the report mentioned that it will be difficult for the party to win the next year state assembly polls with Rawat as the face of BJP. Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat resigns

Patel (59) was unanimously elected BJP legislature party leader here on Sunday. His name was proposed by CM <keyword id="193875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Rupani" source="Orion">Vijay Rupani</keyword>, whose resignation from the post on Saturday surprised many. Most of the 112 MLAs of the party in the 182-member Assembly were present at the meeting, BJP sources said. Patel won the 2017 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections from Ghatlodia constituency, defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel by over one lakh votes, the highest winning margin in the 2017 Gujarat polls. He holds a diploma in civil engineering and is considered close to former CM Anandiben Patel, who won from the seat in 2012 polls. With Patel being named the new legislature party leader, the suspense over who will succeed Rupani as Gujarat chief minister has ended. The new leader will meet the governor and stake claim to form the government, sources said. BJP's central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Joshi and party general secretary Tarun Chaug were present at the legislature party meet. Tomar met state BJP chief C R Paatil on Sunday morning. Rupani (65) on Saturday resigned from the post, his sudden announcement coming over a year before the state goes to polls. It is not clear what prompted the development in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state where elections to the 182-member Assembly are due in December 2022. Rupani, the fourth chief minister to demit office in BJP-ruled states during the coronavirus pandemic, was sworn in as chief minister - his second stint as CM - in December 2017. Rupani, who completed five years in office on August 7 this year, first became the chief minister on August 7, 2016, following the resignation of incumbent Anandiben Patel, and continued in the office after the BJP's victory in the 2017 Assembly elections. Bhupendra Patel will be the new Chief Minister of Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The BJP vs Congress war over Robert Vadra's land deals shows no signs of abating with the saffron party asserting that the Rajasthan government will begin its probe into the controversial deals next month and questioning the "silence" of party chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi on the transactions. 
 
BJP declared Vadra's deals will be investigated in Rajasthan, where CM Vasundhara Raje will ensure a thorough probe once the Lok Sabha polls end on May 16. BJP said the silence of Congress's top duo only added to suspicions that the "family" had something to hide on the land deals, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said. 
 
Former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari also chipped in from Lucknow where he was campaigning for Rajnath Singh, saying the UPA government should either set up a judicial probe into Vadra's dealings or Sonia should file a defamation suit if the allegations against her son-in-law are baseless. 
 
Sitharaman added, "It is not an issue of vendetta politics. It is more an issue of an electoral promise given by Raje that she will definitely look into all the malpractices of the Gehlot government and Vadra is one of these ... once the model code is lifted ... law will take its due course." 
 
Congress retaliated by dismissing BJP's threats, saying the saffron party had got "nervous" because of Priyanka Gandhi's effective campaign. "It is very clear BJP is panicking due to Priyanka Gandhi's campaign in Rae Bareli and Amethi. Her campaign is resonating across the country," party spokesman Randeep Surjewala said, describing the information in a CD and booklet released by BJP as "trash allegations made by an elementary school kid". But BJP is showing no signs of easing its attacks on Vadra. "Till date, we don't have the Congress chief talking about it nor has the vice-president, who had said he will bring in great reformatory changes in the party," Sitharaman said. 
 
BJP also termed Congress's claim of the Supreme Court giving Vadra a clean chit an "incorrect interpretation". With the two parties sparring over the issue, AAP accused both of "selective shadow-boxing", saying they were driving away the focus of the campaign from real issues. In a statement, the party said it had already highlighted the issue of Vadra's dealings 18 months ago.

 With <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections in full swing, and the Delhi assembly polls not too far away, Gadkari's tweet that Bedi would be the party's chief ministerial candidate could cause major trouble for the already faction-ridden state unit in Delhi. 
 
While Gadkari could not be contacted, some in BJP said his Twitter account had been hacked and there was some mischief behind the post. 
 The <keyword id="153361" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="delhi-bjp">Delhi BJP</keyword> unit has not been able to overcome its factional fights between groups owing allegiance to <keyword id="196226" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Harsh-Vardhan">Harsh Vardhan</keyword> and <keyword id="81821" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vijay-Goel">Vijay Goel</keyword>. This even led to the party naming its Delhi Lok Sabha contestants at the last moment. 
 
Bedi, who is known to be close to BJP leaders, has not joined the party and proposing her name implies bringing an outsider for the post of Delhi CM. That could only lead to fresh infighting in the state unit.

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=amit+shah">BJP President Amit Shah</a> and three other senior party leaders were stuck inside a lift for 40 minutes, raising alarm and sending security officials into a tizzy.

The incident happened when Shah was going from the ground floor to the first floor along with party in-charge for Bihar Bhupendra Yadav, secretary Nagendra and General Secretary Saudan Singh. 
 
"The lift got stuck between the two floors and its metal doors also got jammed at around 11.30 PM last night. There was no lift operator or person capable of handling such emergency around. The mobile phones of those trapped inside were also out of range as they were in a closed box," BJP state President Mangal Pandey told news agency PTI. 
 
Shah and other leaders were rescued by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CRPF">CRPF</a> personnel who were present there as part of his Z+ security cover. They tore steel doors of the elevator to pull out them. 
 
Pandey informed all attempts to open the doors of the lift had failed. 
 
"It is a gross dereliction of duty and irresponsibility shown by the people responsible for facilities at the state guest house. There was nobody present there to deal with such emergencies despite the fact that a person having Z+ security cover was staying there," said Pandey. 
 
Shah was staying at the state guest house and was conducting meeting with party leaders in view of the forthcoming <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bihar+elections">Assembly polls in Bihar</a>.
