It’s a great summer but August’s long weekends are even better for luxury hotel chain

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I moved from the US to Denmark in 2020 and have been raising my kids here. </li><li>It's common for families to take three to four weeks of vacation in July and August. </li></ul>I'm an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-living-in-denmark-shares-differences-in-preschool-2023-11">American living in Denmark</a>, and for the first time I am having to play by the cultural and legal rules of Danish summer vacation. Let me explain.My oldest child just turned 6, which is when you start school in Denmark, as opposed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-twins-started-kindergarten-a-year-late-2023-8">5 years old in the US</a>. If you have preschool-age kids there is always a variation of "summer day care" where institutions join together, and you can be flexible with the weeks you take. When your child starts attending public school, schools close down during the summer period. While it's up to the individual schools to decide their holiday period, many Danish families take the same three to four weeks of vacation in mid-July into early August.In Denmark, enjoying a long summer vacation isn't just a perk — it's a right under the Danish Holiday Act, called Ferieloven. It embodies Denmark's philosophy toward work-life balance and ensures that every employee, regardless of the nature of employment (permanent, temporary, full-time, or part-time), gets ample time off to unwind. A long summer vacation is a very important part of Danish culture, and Denmark consistently ranks among the best in the world for employee satisfaction and work-life balance, but as someone coming from the US, where the average employee gets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-parents-should-do-what-kids-want-on-vacation-2024-1">two weeks of vacation</a> a year, it takes some getting used to.If you have a full-time job in Denmark like I do, you get five or six weeks paid holiday a year. While The Holiday Act allows flexibility in when it can be taken, it attributes a "main holiday" period between May 1st and September 30th, where employees are encouraged, but not mandated, to take three consecutive weeks of their accrued leave. I have not been used to taking vacation time, and also still have a bit of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/10-days-of-vacation-for-working-parents-is-not-enough-2023-4">American work ethic</a> mixed with a fear of being away too long. I've been so precious about parsing out my vacation days in Denmark, that it's actually backfired and I've lost the time I didn't take.<h2 id="2688ddd3-0b55-430e-b476-d9facb8bca7b">Many offices shut down in August</h2>For those on a team, you will need to plan your time off well in advance because your Danish colleagues will be. The Holiday Act says that employees should ideally inform their employers about their leave plans three months in advance for the main holiday period. If you are one of the people working through the summer, as I've done the past two years, it's a very quiet time, which can be nice, but it is difficult to get anything done that requires co-dependencies. Danes do not respond to calls or texts during this period, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/took-pay-cut-better-work-life-balance-no-regrets-2024-2">work-life balance</a> quality I appreciate but found shocking when I first experienced it. This is why some Danish companies not only urge everyone to take those weeks but even close down during those summer months. At first, I struggled to understand how Nordic companies can run effectively, given how long the summer holidays are, but they do.<h2 id="65f30f60-97b5-4362-9410-76074606e327">Traveling during the high season can be expensive</h2>While there are many upsides to the summer vacation "high season" period, one of the downsides is that many holiday activities and destinations in Denmark, such as amusement parks or bath hotels, are packed and price gouged during this time. Flights out of Denmark are also double the price. Many Danes choose instead to go camping or head off to their summer houses, which are usually within an hour or two drive from home.Growing up in the US, I spent a full eight weeks at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-hated-summer-camp-when-i-was-a-kid-2023-7">summer overnight camp</a> in Wisconsin every year from age 4. I loved the skills I was able to acquire, like horseback riding, sailing, and water skiing, but I was starved for parent visiting weekends. In Denmark, there are many free and paid day camp options, but no real equivalent of an overnight camp other than a weeklong scout camp, likely because families prefer spending their holidays together. Now that I'm a working parent in Denmark, I'm very grateful for getting to experience a new way of spending the summer holidays together with family. I just need to learn how to take the time off and really unplug.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee ended at 79.66 against the US dollar, as against 79.64 at the close of the previous trading session. The 10-year benchmark 6.54 per cent-2032 bond yield ended at 7.2894 per cent, marginally higher than 7.2673 per cent close on the previous trading session. "Looking at the long holiday ahead, there may have been lot of short term USD demand, pushing the USD-INR pair higher. Also, traders usually prefer to be squared during long holidays where liquidity has also been thin," said Kunal Sodhani, Vice President, Global Trading Centre, Shinhan Bank. Indian financial markets will remain closed on August 15 and 16 on account of Independence Day and Parsi New Year, respectively. But I've found a way to turn the pain into something beautiful.As anyone who has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caregiver-mother-burned-out-grieving-freedom-2023-11">lost a mother</a> knows, Mother's Day is hard forever after. So is the death anniversary. And her birthday, and holidays. I feel sad every February 9, the day we learned my mom's cancer had metastasized, and April 16, when the oncologist told us that the last-ditch chemo attempt had failed."At least we kill two birds with one stone," my sister said to me in 2019. Our parents married on Mom's 22nd birthday, so we get another two tough days — the birthday and wedding anniversary — out of the way together each August 11.While my mom was alive, I followed her down the path of becoming a yoga teacher. She believed in making the best out of everything. That included her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-endometrial-cancer-doctor-easy-to-miss-2022-8">endometrial cancer</a> diagnosis, shocking for a kale-eating Reiki master who rose before dawn to meditate."Well, you could've had a lousy mother for 70 years," she said, prompting our final laugh together on Friday, May 11, 2018. We were at an alternative cancer clinic in Mexico where she died the next afternoon. In the United States, Mother's Day was still a day away, but we had gotten to celebrate Mexican <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/gifts/best-mothers-day-gifts">Mother's Day</a>, always held on May 10. I'd take that, and our nearly 40 years together, and run like a thief.<h2>My mom and I connected through yoga</h2>For a decade before her death at age 66, my mom taught a special <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yoga-classes-solo-travel-mindfulness-culture-2023-11">yoga class</a> each New Year's Day where she guided participants through an intention-setting process. She taught the last one with a cap over her bald head and a friend demonstrating the poses for her as she called them out. As the following winter holiday season approached, the owner of the studio in Hamden, Connecticut, asked if I'd help continue the tradition.<div type="image" title="The author (right) with her mother Sue Neufeld in 2010." height="1001" width="1334" msid="110010913" hostid="261" sizebytes="65460"></div>I hesitated. My yoga teaching and journalism careers were on hold as I was slammed with family responsibilities: I had two young sons, and after my mom died, I brought my maternal grandmother to live in my apartment building in Queens. I felt like a fraud in yoga as I struggled with anxiety and overwhelm; I was just figuring out how to put my battered postpartum body back together."People would really love to see you," Jen, the studio owner, said. We would co-teach, along with one of my mom's friends. Nervously, I agreed, and more than 70 people showed up. I asked everyone to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/happiness-gratitude-journal-depression-2019-4">write a gratitude list</a>, and specifically to look for good things that grew out of pain. "Like this class," I said.The experience made me realize that I missed teaching yoga, which connects me to my mom. I didn't want to wait a year to do it again.I recalled a rare argument that my mom and I had just before she got sick. She wanted me to bring my kids, then ages 1 and 3, to her house in Connecticut for Mother's Day. My husband had to work, and I was exhausted and wanted her to come to me in New York. But she and Bubbi came to help every week. "On Mother's Day, you come to Connecticut," she said.<h2>I decided to teach a class in her honor</h2>I listened then — and now. I told Jen I'd teach another class on the Saturday of Mother's Day weekend, on my own. I called it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.yourcommunityyoga.com/wkshp-schedule-list/2024/5/11/remembering-the-divine-mother-wsara-neufeld">Remembering the Divine Mother</a>, both a nod to my mom's deep dive into yoga's spiritual aspects and a wish for participants to connect with the essence of motherly love, whether or not they ever actually received it.This time, nearly 100 people crammed into the room, mats spilling into the hall. My mother was cremated, but if she had a grave, she would have danced on it to see my dad and Uncle Stevie doing back-to-back breathing with each other, and her cousin Maureen practicing alongside them. For decades she'd tried to interest the three of them in yoga. Many came primarily to see Bubbi, who had long attended my mom's classes and at age 92 participated from a chair. I did my best to accommodate everyone with journaling, easily modifiable movement, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/how-to-meditate">guided relaxation</a>, and meditation.A year later, in the height of the pandemic, I taught the class over Zoom from Bubbi's apartment, upstairs from my own. Bubbi was too weak to do the movements herself, but she wrote a gratitude list and beamed with pride while my husband provided tech support. A year after that, Bubbi, too, had died, and I taught from my own living room. Jen was taking extra precautions as she was caring for her elderly mother, who died that spring. We limited in-person attendance to 15, required a negative COVID test for admission, and provided a Zoom link to others.As we continue the hybrid format, participation is less from extended family but more from others who have lost their moms, or for whom Mother's Day is tough for other reasons. These launches included the company's first commercial service flight with Italian Air Force members in June 2023 and its first flight carrying a private astronaut in August of that same year.The company was grounded in February, however, after a small part fell off the mothership of its space plane on Virgin Galactic's latest space tourism flight. So, this Sunday's launch may be Blue Origin's chance to catch back up.However, the cost of a ticket on Blue Origin's rocket versus Virgin Galactic's space plane is worth noting regarding the companies' competitiveness.Prices vary widely, and Blue Origin won't release what it charges per seat on New Shepard. However, Quartz reported that a seat on Blue Origins' last crewed launch in August 2022 cost about $1.25 million. That's nearly three times the cost of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/richard-branson-virgin-galactic-under-fire-expensive-space-tours-titan-2023-6">$450,000 seat on Virgin Galactic</a>.<h2 id="aac8f206-3b0a-4725-9fcb-bb13e17930b3">Blue Origin's orbital dreams and delays</h2><div type="image" title="new glenn reusable rocket jeff bezos blue origin" height="1125" width="2000" msid="110219372" hostid="261" sizebytes="50166"></div>While suborbital tourism can be lucrative, the real money is in orbital spaceflight.Private companies, including SpaceX (founded in 2002), United Launch Alliance (founded in 2006), and Rocket Lab (founded in 2006), have been doing this for years.Getting to orbit requires bigger, more powerful rockets that are more costly and time-consuming to build. But the major benefit is that there's a much larger market for companies who want to send a satellite or other technology into orbit than for floating in a spaceship for a few minutes.Over their lifetimes, SpaceX has launched more than 300 rockets to orbit, ULA has launched 155, and Rocket Lab has launched over 45. Blue Origin, by comparison, has yet to launch one rocket to orbit — though its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-nasa-contract-missions-new-glenn-2020-12">New Glenn orbital rocket</a> is scheduled for its first launch later this year.Bezos' company announced it was building New Glenn in 2016, with an inaugural launch scheduled for 2020. However, the company has suffered a series of setbacks, delaying lift-off.These delays have cost Blue Origin potentially millions of dollars in service flights that companies are willing to pay to get their tech to orbit. ULA, for example, states on its website that its rockets have "placed more than $70 billion of satellite assets into orbit."That said, Blue Origin has contracts with NASA, the US Space Force, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-amazon-worried-falling-behind-ai-race-google-openai-2024-5">Amazon</a> for its New Glenn rocket once it's ready to fly.<h2 id="52e71c3c-d0cd-4d2f-a83f-ee2b04d74eba">Bezos says Blue Origin's culture isn't fast enough</h2><div type="image" title="Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos" height="612" width="1000" msid="110219375" hostid="261" sizebytes="113664"></div>Part of Blue Origin's sluggish pace is its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-ukraine-tech-culture-differences-2024-5">work culture</a>, which Bezos aims to change."We're going to get really good at taking appropriate technology risk and making those decisions quickly, being bold on those things and having the right culture that supports that," Bezos told Fridman.Sunday's scheduled launch is a step in the right direction for Blue Origin. It may be playing catch-up now, but Bezos wants to kick the company into high gear, telling Fridman that's one of the reasons he left his role as Amazon's CEO."I turned the CEO role over, and the primary reason I did that is that I could spend time on Blue Origin, adding some energy, some sense of urgency.
