More and more millennials have accepted that the bus is an economical and comfortable way to commute. The technology-enabled, seat-based, demand-adaptive bus mobility service Shuttl helps users select from prefixed routes and schedules, to commute from home to work. The startup which has been around for 4 years has raised $34 million in funding from the likes of Sequoia, Amazon Lightspeed India Partners, Times Internet and Dentsu. “We raised angel funding when we were working on a different version – an intercity bus app. But a few months into the business, we realised that that is not a day-to-day problem we are solving. We switched to an intra city bus service soon after,” Amit Singh, CEO and co-founder, Shuttl told Business Insider. However, there’s also news about another round of funding. While reports say that Shuttl has closed its series B round of funding for $7 million, the company has not commented on it. Answering Business Insider India’s questions in April, Singh had said, “We are in the process of raising capital. The response from potential investors has been encouraging. There is a lot of interest in the massive underserved market we're going after with our unique approach to shared mobility. Our existing investors continue to believe in us and are impressed by the good work team has been putting in and have already made some commitments.” But profitability is not close, in fact, it is a moving goal post for the company. “There’s always a tradeoff between growth and profitability. When we are close to it, we add more buses, more routes which moves profitability farther away,” he said.

His friend who would board the same bus midway, would call him to track its ETA. Today, with co-founder Deepanshu Malviya Singh, runs a technology-enabled, seat-based, demand-adaptive bus mobility service – Shuttl. With Shuttl, a user can select from prefixed routes and schedules to commute from home to work. The service, popular with millennials and working professionals, is operational in eight cities and has marked over 20 million rides so far. Its biggest market is Delhi-NCR with women making up 38% of its customers. Singh, an IIT-Delhi graduate, had earlier worked on the <keyword id="6366797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword> and later at investment firms, before going on to work at Jabong. Having gained experience in both transportation and consumer internet, Singh knew that he had to bring both these industries together. “We were supremely impressed with Uber as a product. However, there was a trade-off between affordability and comfort,” he said. The Mathematics behind transportation Singh has a simple equation for comfort in transportation. Comfort = assured seat + a direct route + an AC vehicle. “Buses are the most cost efficient way of moving people. They have been there for ages, except that there was no technology involved. The white space was between cabs which offered extra seats at a price and a public transport which assured no seat at a cheaper price,” said Singh. So, they took buses – unbundled the seats, rebundled them and offered with a subscription model. “In India, there are three factors – high population density, low purchasing power, solutions and developing infrastructure – that gave us the opportunity to come and build something,” said Singh. The original commute When in 2015, Singh and Malviya started working on Shuttl, it was an intercity service providing bus routes between Delhi and Jaipur. On April 6, 2015, they realised that they weren’t solving a day-to-day problem. By April 7, Malviya built an app where users can put an origin and a destination without any payment gateway. On April 8, they stood at HUDA city centre in Gurugram, and convinced two people to use the app. By evening, those two people got five more along, thus taking it to nine bookings in a day. “Retention and referral are big things. We didn’t sell to nine people, we sold only to two, yet our phones were ringing with orders,” said Singh. Within four months, they gained the attention of one of India’s marquee funds – Sequoia Capital. By September, they had reached 10,000 users.

Travelling within the city is a bane for all especially those who travel long distances for work. While women are increasing joining the workforce, their daily commute is still a tall task. As our last passenger gets dropped off at latest 11 PM, we wanted to enable a great experience which is not tainted by worry or boredom. Our prices for routes typically start at Rs. 49 and go up to Rs. 89 which is affordable for most. With an assured seat, the customers only tend to gain from this service.” Singh also assured that the prices of the daily pass will not be affected as these costs are a part of customer acquisition for the company. Shuttl SAFE is also equipped with productivity tools for the commuter such as Shuttl TV, with exclusive content by Shuttl that engages the commuter while travelling to work. All seats shall be provided with earphones for the commuters to experience engaging content on Shuttl TV. Thus, controlling sound-levels within the Shuttl thereby taking care of the commuter’s privacy where she is also free to engage in any other personal activity without any disturbance. In addition to this, free WiFi will be available that allows commuters to read, socialize, shop and manage their personal tasks when travelling. Ride-share is also another new feature that Shuttl has launched with SAFE where the commuter can share their ride details with a friend or a family member who can then track their respective rides. All Shuttl buses will be equipped with these features and would be rolled out in phases on all Shuttl routes by the end of this year starting with the safety features.

Its net profit was Rs 507 crore in the January-March period of the preceding 2022-23, the company said in an exchange filing. During the fourth quarter of FY24, the company's total income fell to Rs 2,806 crore from Rs 2,977 crore a year ago. The company's expenses surged to Rs 2,379 crore during the period under review, as against Rs 2,053 crore in the year-ago period. In a separate statement, the company said its operational capacity grew at 35 per cent year-on-year to 10,934 MW with greenfield addition of 2,848 MW renewable capacity, including 2,418 MW solar and 430 MW wind projects. With this, AGEL became the first company in India to cross the 10,000 MW <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> capacity. AGEL's 10,934 MW operational portfolio will power more than 5.8 million homes and avoid about 21 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The sale of energy increased 47 per cent year-on-year to 21,806 million units in FY24, primarily backed by strong capacity addition, consistent solar CUF (capacity utilisation factor) and improved wind and hybrid CUF. The revenue from power supply rose 23 per cent to Rs 1,575 crore from Rs 1,941 crore earlier. <keyword id="19919864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green-Energy" source="keywords">Adani Green Energy</keyword> Ltd Chief Executive Officer Amit Singh said, "We have deployed the first 2 GW of the 30 GW of renewable capacity under construction at Khavda in just 12 months of breaking ground. "Our highest capacity addition of 2.8 GW in FY24 demonstrates our strong execution capabilities, and we are confident of continuing the momentum." The company aims to commission at least 5 GW of hydro-pumped storage projects by 2030, and set a higher target of 50 GW RE capacity by 2030, which will contribute towards India's non-fossil fuel capacity target of 500 GW, he said. AGEL further said it has commenced construction work on its first hydro pumped storage project (PSP) of 500 MW on the Chitravathi river. The project is located at Peddakotla in Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh. The existing reservoir will act as the lower reservoir and the upper reservoir is to be developed. The generation capacity will be 500 MW with estimated 6.2 generation hours in a day. All necessary approvals, including the final DPR approval are in place and financial closure has been achieved for the project. At least <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/search-resumes-four-people-missing-nepal-after-deadly-air-crash-2023-01-16/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">70 of the 72 people on board the flight died</a> in the crash in Pokhara on Sunday, making it the deadliest plane crash in Nepal in three decades. "Flying in Nepal becomes challenging if you don't have navigational aids and puts an extra workload on the pilot whenever they experience problems during a flight," Amit Singh, the founder of India's Safety Matters Foundation, told the AP."Lack of an instrument landing system only reaffirms that Nepal's air safety culture is not adequate," he said.Hassan Shahidi, the president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation, told Insider's Matthew Loh that of the last 12 fatal airline accidents in Nepal, <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-nepal-has-so-many-fatal-plane-crashes-2023-1">60% involved a controlled flight into terrain</a>, or instances when a plane is flown unintentionally into the ground, a mountain, or a body of water. "Typically, a controlled flight into terrain is due to the fact that there is nothing wrong with the plane, other than the crew or pilots not being able to see the mountain and its peaks," he told Insider.Nepal has a reputation for being one of the most unsafe territories for air travel in the world. When bus aggregator and mobility app Shuttl came in 2015, it operated in the grey area between public and private transport. So, Shuttl competes in a market that already has public transportation like the metro along with convenience factors like Uber and Ola. Amit Singh, co-founder and CEO, Shuttl, believes they built a category that didn’t exist. “Small changes make the product very different. They are on-demand companies, we are a planned ride share company – with slots, routes and subscriptions,” he said. Singh explains that the difference between transportation and mobility is that mobility is a bottoms-up approach. “We care about where our consumer is, where he/she wants to go and build routes accordingly. Everything is consumer focused. Even when you are doing a traffic study for the metro, you need to be very confident about what the demand would be 5 years down the line as well. If you don’t get it right, viability goes for a toss,” he said. In fact, this was one of the challenges Singh faced when they began working on Shuttl. While buses have been operational in India for ages, they had not really been integrated with technology. This meant that Singh had no proof-of-concept whether the startup would actually take off.
