In its best winning streak since its launch in 1996, the NSE <keyword id="22979629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-soared" source="keywords">Nifty soared</keyword> 83.95 points or 0.33 per cent to hit a new lifetime closing high of 25,235.90, taking its victorious run to the 12th day in a row. During the day, it surged 116.4 points or 0.46 per cent to hit a new record intra-day peak of 25,268.35. "Global markets are...resonating with the US Fed's pledges of a rate cut in September. The US and Indian markets have regained the recent highs, reflecting the continuation of this optimism," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services. On the weekly front, the BSE benchmark jumped 1,279.56 points or 1.57 per cent, and the Nifty soared 412.75 points or 1.66 per cent. In nine days of rally, the BSE benchmark surged 1,941.09 points or 2.41 per cent. The Nifty zoomed 1,096.9 points or 4.54 per cent in 12 sessions. "Nifty ended higher on Friday for the twelfth consecutive session, its best winning streak since its launch in 1996. Global shares mostly rose Friday as markets continued to be moderately optimistic about the prospects of technology companies helped by the prospect of lower interest rates amid signs of moderating inflation across the developed world," said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities. Among the 30 Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, NTPC, Power Grid, Bajaj Finserv, Bharti Airtel and Tata Consultancy Services were the biggest gainers. On the other hand, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, Tech Mahindra and ITC were among the laggards. In the broader <keyword id="19913381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market" source="keywords">market</keyword>, the BSE smallcap gauge jumped 0.75 per cent, and the midcap index climbed 0.53 per cent. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled with gains. European markets were trading in positive territory. The US markets ended on a mixed note on Thursday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 3,259.56 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors lapped up equities worth Rs 2,690.85 crore. "Continuation of accumulation of quality large-caps by the DIIs (Domestic Institutional Investors) and HNIs and the FIIs reducing their selling significantly and buying on certain days have contributed to the resilience of the market," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.08 per cent to USD 80 a barrel. "Though the domestic market is currently showing a positive bias, the Indian Q1 GDP growth is expected to be moderate, while premium valuation and a lack of fresh triggers could see further momentum buildup in value stocks," Nair said. The BSE benchmark jumped 349.05 points or 0.43 per cent to settle at an all-time closing high of 82,134.61 on Thursday, extending its winning momentum to the eighth day in a row. Rallying for the 11th straight session, the Nifty surged 99.60 points or 0.40 per cent to settle at a new closing high of 25,151.95. "Moody's upgraded India's GDP rating forecast to 7.2 per cent for 2024 and to 6.6 per cent for 2025 (earlier estimates of 6.8 per cent and 6.4 per cent) on back strong broad-based growth. This, along with healthy MSCI inflow, took markets to new highs. "We expect the market to continue its northbound journey with stock-specific action. Global macro data, which will be released during the week will continue to provide cues to domestic equities. Sector-wise, Auto will remain in focus as OEMs will announce their monthly sales numbers," Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said.

From the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Sun Pharmaceutical, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and JSW Steel were the gainers. Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Asian Paints, Titan, Infosys, State Bank of India, Tata Consultancy Services and HDFC Bank were the laggards. "Ahead of the FED chair Powell's speech, the Indian indices oscillated around the flat trajectory and mixed global market sentiments further catalysed this scenario," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services said. Investors are exercising caution and awaiting Powell's signals for more insights on the interest rate path, Nair added. In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge jumped 0.15 per cent, however the midcap index fell 0.66 per cent. Among the indices, Services surged by 1.07 per cent, Auto by 0.93 per cent, Industrials by 0.26 per cent, capital goods by 0.23 per cent and Consumer Discretionary by 0.13 per cent. Realty, IT, Oil &amp; Gas and Teck were among the laggards. "Indian market struggled for direction in early trade on Friday as investors awaited cues from US Federal Reserve Jerome Powell's speech at the ongoing Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. Stock of Anil Ambani led group stocks tumbled by up to 10 per cent after Sebi barred him and 24 other entities, including former key officials of RHFL, from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company. European markets were trading with significant gains in the mid-session deals while Asian markets were mixed. The US stock markets closed lower in overnight trade on Thursday. Sensex, Nifty edge up in volatile trade ahead of US Fed chief speech

"On a sectoral front, realty was the top gainer followed by FMCG and IT while media corrected the most. Profit booking led correction was witnessed in the Pharma segment. Despite the muted performance by mid and small caps, stock-specific buying was observed", he said. Out of the 2,772 stocks traded, 1,403 saw advances, while 1,283 declined. Another 86 remained unchanged. 156 stocks hit their 52-week high, while 15 stocks also touched their 52-week low. 124 stocks hit the upper circuit during trading today, while 78 stocks hit the lower circuit as well. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities highlights that the short-term texture of the market is still positive. Currently, the market has witnessed narrow range activity at higher levels, which Chouhan sees as traders waiting for either side breakout. "For the bulls now, 24,665/80,900 would be the immediate breakout level. Above which, the market could rally up to 24,750-24,775/81,200-81,300. On the flip side, we could see one quick intraday correction if the index slip below 24,550/80,500. Below which, it could retest the level of 24,500/80,300. Further down side may also continue which could drag the market till 24,425/80,000", he explained.

And it would have an effect on the revenues of the sector as a whole. “Our Q3FY23 estimates suggest a deceleration in mobile revenue growth across telcos due to SIM consolidation, lower benefit of premiumisation from slowdown in 4G net add, and absence of tariff hikes,” said an ICICI Securities report. Overall, analysts expect the three telcos to report earnings growth in the range of 9.4-19.7% year-on-year. Reliance Jio is expected to report the highest revenue growth at 19.7% YoY while its close rival Airtel is expected to report a 17.5% increase. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, is expected to report revenue growth on the lower end at 9.4%, according to ICICI Securities. JioAirFiber launched in metros – plans and benefits versus the Airtel Xstream AirFiber

<ul><li>Telecom sector’s aggregate gross revenues (AGR) are expected to grow at 11-12% CAGR over FY23-26.</li><li>Like in Q1, AGR growth in the next three years will be driven by data monetization and premiumisation.</li><li>During the same period, <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> is expected to gain AGR market share due to its ‘sticky and premium’ subscribers. </li></ul>After suffering through years of disruptions and consolidations, the telecom sector is showing good signs of growth in aggregate gross revenues (AGR) driven by ‘premiumisation’ – higher 4G conversions and more post-paid subscriptions. The telecom sector’s AGR is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) at 12% between FY23-FY26. And, Bharti Airtel is expected to add more market share, say analysts. “Bharti’s AGR market share is likely to jump 125 basis points in the same period (FY23-FY26) to 37.5%, and RJio’s by 110 basis points to 42.5%,” said a research report by ICICI Securities. The signs are already visible from Q1FY24 performance of Airtel, as its AGR market share went up by 80 basis points. “Bharti's strong market share gains in B and C circles indicates traction on its rural expansion strategy,” said Jefferies as it expects sector revenues to grow at 11% CAGR over FY23-26 with market share gains for Bharti/Jio. Vodafone Idea’s market share has already declined to an all-time low in Q1, and market share losses could accelerate further, says Jefferies as 5G becomes mainstream. The company has been unable to start rolling out 5G due to its heavy debt, unlike its peers who have aggressively rolling it out. The era of tariff hikes The industry AGR recorded an 8% growth in Q1 even as the sector has not seen any tariff hikes in the last 12 months. This was driven by subscriber additions, data monetisation and premiumisation – conversion from 2G to 4G and from prepaid to postpaid. Going ahead, this trend will only add to AGR as well as ARPU growth. The average revenue per user (ARPU) is also expected to grow at a healthy pace of 10% over the next three years, estimates ICICI Securities. Moreover, there are tariff hikes to come. “We believe India wireless business tariff hikes are likely to be more frequent, going forward, given the consolidated industry structure and higher ARPU requirement to justify significant capex for 5G rollout,” said a report by J M Financial. In the last three years, the sector took two tariff hikes in December 2019 by around 25%, and another in December 2021 by around 15%. The companies were affected by the first tariff hike due to SIM consolidation, but the second hike smoothly flew into the AGR. ICICI Securities too expects another tariff hike in FY25 which is expected to be at around 10%. But this is not the only factor that can contribute to ARPU growth. Over 6% CAGR growth is expected to come from premiumisation and data monetisation. “Nonetheless, industry AGR performance in the past few quarters has shown organic growth (defined as AGR growth without tariff hike) can potentially sustain at much higher levels if operators execute better data monetisation,” ICICI Securities said. And when tariff hikes happen, it will only add to market share gains to Airtel. “Bharti is the biggest beneficiary of higher tariffs given the sticky and premium quality of its subscribers, ensuring that tariff hikes flow through to ARPU,” says J M Financial. Analysts expect Jio to lead in terms of revenue growth at 13.6% year-on-year, followed closely by Airtel at 12.9%. Vodafone Idea is expected to come in third at 2.6%. The analyst consensus is that Jio and Airtel could gain between 1-2% subscribers during the quarter, while Vodafone Idea is expected to lose 1% of its subscribers. While <keyword id="6668253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-5g" source="Orion">Jio 5G</keyword> is currently available in over 400 cities across India, Airtel has taken a lead and expanded to over 500 cities. For context, Airtel and Jio had 5G coverage in 66 and 70 cities respectively in December 2022. “We expect their capex to remain elevated in 4QFY23 and may increase further from previous quarters,” Motilal Oswal said. While Jio targets pan-India 5G coverage by December 2023, Airtel is aiming to cover all major cities by the end of March 2023. All in all, Jio’s capex outlay for 5G rollout, including spectrum costs, is ₹2 lakh crore. Airtel, on the other hand, has an outlay of ₹75,000 crore. With the pace of rollout expected to increase from here on, the capex is expected to increase at the same pace. Vodafone Idea’s 5G rollout will depend on its fundraising, the details of which are unclear at the moment. Analysts at ICICI Securities expect Airtel to call for the second tranche of payment for its ₹21,000 crore rights issue to fund its 5G capex – the telco had announced it back in October 2021.
