The fact that two overseas IT giants – <keyword id="6370971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="accenture" source="Orion">Accenture</keyword> and <keyword id="28721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cognizant" source="Orion">Cognizant</keyword> – have lowered their growth numbers says a lot about the bleak outlook for the sector because of rising inflation and currency headwinds. Accenture cut earnings per share for 2022 to $10.61-10.70, compared with its previous estimate of $10.61-10.81. The Russia-Ukraine war also had an impact on its earnings as it decided to close down its Russian business. The company said it expects a negative foreign exchange impact of 4.5% in fiscal 2022, worse than its previous forecast of a 3% forex hit, as per a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/accenture-beats-quarterly-revenue-estimates-2022-06-23/">Reuters</a> report. Note that Accenture makes more than half of its revenue from outside the US. A strong US dollar means weakness in other currencies – this has an adverse impact on companies with exposure to currencies other than the dollar. Confirming the bleak environment to make money, even Cognizant lowered its revenue guidance to 9-11% in constant currency terms as compared to 8.5-11.5% earlier. “Results were strong though the focus of the Street has shifted to impact on business in a recessionary environment,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Accenture, Cognizant could see revenue growth but a strong US dollar could spoil the party

<keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> seems to be back on track, slowly making its way to the pole position it has lost for some time now. True, the NYSE-listed IT firm is still struggling with the visa issues in the US and missed the street estimates for the second quarter ended September 30, 2013. But that has not deterred India’s second-largest <keyword id="708971" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="software-services-exporter">software services exporter</keyword> from recording some healthy growth. Interestingly, this is its first full-quarter earnings after <keyword id="170488" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="co-founder">co-founder</keyword> <keyword id="51793" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NR-Narayana-Murthy">NR Narayana Murthy</keyword> came out of retirement and returned to chair the board. 
 But did the iconic business leader manage to right the floundering firm? Let’s have a quick look at the numbers for the 2nd quarter and find out. <keyword id="122699" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infy">Infy</keyword> has reported 1.6% rise in <keyword id="645414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="consolidated-net-profit">consolidated net profit</keyword> to Rs 2,407 crore, compared to 2,369 crore in the same period a year earlier. That’s not mind-blowing, but certainly speaks of growth, in spite of a <keyword id="143723" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="volatile-market">volatile market</keyword> and a depreciating <keyword id="6355302" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rupee">Rupee</keyword>. 
 Its <keyword id="1153513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="consolidated-revenue">consolidated revenue</keyword> has also soared 31.5% to Rs 12,965 crore, from Rs 9,858 crore in the year-ago period. Overall, <keyword id="6398283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Revenues">revenues</keyword> rose 15% to $2.07 billion in July-September quarter, from $1.80 billion in the same quarter last fiscal. 
 The Bangalore-headquartered IT giant has raised its <keyword id="1125759" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dollar-revenue-guidance">dollar revenue guidance</keyword> to 9-10% for the full fiscal as against the previous forecast of 6-10%. It has also revised <keyword id="1900013" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rupee-revenue-guidance">rupee revenue guidance</keyword> to 21-22%, again up from 13-17% earlier. Conservative estimates, no doubt, but things seem to be moving now. 
 “During the quarter we witnessed broad-based volume growth, robust client additions, five large deal wins and increased sales momentum of our Big Data and Cloud offerings. This growth is a result of our focus on execution, which helps our clients achieve their objectives,” said <keyword id="385878" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="SD-Shibulal">SD Shibulal</keyword>, CEO and managing director of Infosys. “We will continue with planned investments and initiatives to explore new avenues of growth. We remain watchful of the sustainability of improving global economic fundamentals,” he added. 
 
Incidentally, Infosys has added five US Fortune 500 companies to its client list and globally won five large contracts in Q2 ($50 million-plus multi-year deals). 
 That’s all very well, but is the market feeling equally upbeat? The stock jumped as much as 7.5%, but later lost the momentum and closed just 4.79% higher at Rs 3,273.90. Does that mean the numbers are still not looking attractive, at least not in the short term? The cut-throat competition in the technology sector (from the likes of <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword>, <keyword id="6370971" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Accenture">Accenture</keyword> and more) can further impact its growth prospects and the recent exodus of its top-rung employees would not help either. 
 
So are we back to the basics? Murthy’s presence and sound strategies (going after big-ticket but plain vanilla outsourcing contracts is one among those) are undoubtedly pushing the firm. But is he ready with a long-term vision? It is nice to know that employee efficiency is picking up and profits are rolled back to boost sales and productivity. Some analysts also feel that the worst is over for Infy. But we need to wait and watch before going gung-ho.

The company’s revenue beat market estimates, bookings were at a whopping $12.9 billion and its utilisation hit a 10-year high of 93%. The company also increased its revenue guidance for the current fiscal year to between 4% to 6%, up from its previous forecast of 2% to 5% growth. Meanwhile, in India, Infosys, HCL Tech, Wipro and TCS are reaping the benefits. Going forward, Accenture expects new deals to grow even further. Everybody wants to be on the cloud — but who’s going to put them there? Accenture credits its ramp up of new bookings to the growth of cloud adoption. Going forward, it expects its revenue from cloud services, which accounts for around 30% of its revenue, to grow in double-digits. The company also invested $3 billion to create more assets to accelerate cloud migration. However, it was suggested that Accenture is facing the same issue as the Indian IT services companies — a lack of talent. “The management sounded caution on the supply front, suggesting there is a scarcity of Cloud talent in the market,” noted Motilal Oswal. Picking up new businesses on the cheap Just like Accenture, these four Indian IT services giants have been on the road to pick up businesses on the cheap and bolster their digital services. The global IT giant closed 10 acquisitions this quarter that cost Accenture around $500 million. By September next year, it expects to dole out another $1.2 billion as the trend of consolidation continues. However, the biggest challenge of the last few months for the entire sector, the high levels of attrition, may have peaked, according to Motilal Oswal, another Mumbai-based broking firm. But the easing may not be enough to improve margins yet. “Among Tier I players, EBIT [earnings before interest and taxes] margin will be in a tight (-20 basis points to +40 basis points compared to three months ago) range, although they will see a steep decline v/s 3QFY21 profitability,” a Motilal Oswal report dated January 3 said. Here, if Accenture’s numbers are any sign, its attrition rate declined to 17%, which is still very high compared to other IT players, from 19% just three months earlier. Another factor that may play a significant role in the earnings of these software exporters is the nearly 3% weakening of the rupee during the three months between September and December. A weaker rupee magnifies the numbers for these companies who primarily earn in dollars and other foreign currencies.
