If you use your <keyword id="6356006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-card">Aadhaar card</keyword> for verification, the process is a lot quicker than if you other methods of verification — passport, drivers license, voter ID, or bank statements. It’s not really Amazon’s fault because the biometric verification through Aadhar is simple matter of verifying your fingerprint through a fingerprint reader. But, with other physical documents, the company needs people on the ground to verify the authenticity of the documents. Simply put, the verification through Aadhaar is a lot cheaper for Amazon as compared to using other documents for physical verification. Amazon Pay and other digital wallets have to enforce user verification in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s new policy on data localisation. Not an Amazon-specific problem India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, rolled out its data localisation policy rendering 95% of mobile wallets in the country vulnerable to being shut down. The directive of the policy makes it mandatory for all digital wallets to have biometrics or physical customer verification in place. Even PayTM nudged its users into adopting KYC in order to continue using their wallets. If your PayTM account isn’t verified, you can still receive payments from other users and make payments at retail outlets using the QR-code but you can’t send out money to other users directly. Other digital wallets like MobiKwik have shifted to diversifying themselves because they haven’t been able to push their customers towards KYC norms with RBI’s February deadline coming up. The case with Aadhaar India’s top court has already ruled that private companies can’t make it ‘mandatory’ for Aadhaar to be the only method of user verification. But that doesn’t negate it as an option. The issue that people are facing with Aadhaar isn’t whether or not it’s convenient, but whether or not it’s safe. The series of data breaches associated with the Aadhaar system didn’t happen through actual government database, but through third-party organisations that were using Aadhaar information as user identification. A <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/80-people-concerned-about-aadhaar-data-security-study/articleshow/64382747.cms">study </a>by Velocity MR estimates that as many as 80% of respondents in India are concerned about data security when it comes to giving out their Aadhaar card information anywhere. It’s not just about identity theft but information being leaked that leads to customers being spammed over text and email — or even phished. This is probably why Amazon is looking to roll out its own Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>) because, in that case, KYC isn’t mandatory for setting up an account. This is why Amazon wants your Aadhaar number

After the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> has almost made Aadhaar mandatory in many transactions, companies like <keyword id="18635" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and Paytm are also asking customers to upload their 12-digit unique identity number if they want to avail their services. If a customer is unable to share a government certified identification proof, Amazon will continue to process the request based on other details shared by the customer. In case a customer does not have an Aadhaar card, a PAN Card or a passport proof would also suffice. Contrary to this, <keyword id="6368965" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ZoomCar">Zoomcar</keyword> has made Aadhaar mandatory. Without this <keyword id="434813" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Identity-proof">identity proof</keyword>, users in north India and Vijayawada won't be able to book a vehicle. The company, founded in 2013, operates in 15 cities. It started insisting on Aadhaar in June and will extend it to users across the country in a month. "Aadhaar has the best API integration, the latest documents are getting connected with bank accounts. If you have an Aadhaar card, you have the KYC (know your customer) sorted," said a Zoomcar spokesperson. Currently, Aadhaar is mandatory for consumers to get government subsidies, operate a bank account, and get a phone connection. People are required to link their Aadhaar number to existing bank accounts by the end of the year.

Why private companies are now asking customers for their Aadhaar number

That’s good news for those who wish to see India as a developed nation, with its residents having unique identities so that they can be entitled to several benefits under welfare programmes by Central and State governments.

 As per the government's estimates, most social sector schemes suffer from suspect beneficiaries, amounting to 10-15% of the recipients. While subsidies offered by the Centre add up to around 3.5 lakh crore a year, use of <keyword id="546774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-cards">Aadhaar cards</keyword> can significantly reduce the risk of impersonation, saving 35,000-60,000 crore in all regions, annually. 
 
Banks are stressing on Aadhaar identities for quick verification because they are done with the biometric confirmations, which helps in the reduction of time and costs. 92 Out of 100 Indian adults have Aadhaar cards

Amid the privacy and protection concerns voiced by various groups, the top team of <keyword id="86474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unique-Identification-Authority-of-India">Unique Identification Authority of India</keyword> (UIDAI) is exploring the possibility of introducing dummy numbers that would add an extra layer of <keyword id="6355300" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="security">security</keyword> to every <keyword id="144117" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> cardholder. Such a framework would require an individual to share dummy or pseudo numbers — and not the real Aadhaar number — to government agencies, private utilities, banks and while withdrawing money from ATMs or moving funds from one bank account to another under the Aadhaar-enabled payment system. Besides the cardholder, the original Aadhaar number would be known only to UIDAI. No details yet The creation of dummy numbers and the frequency at which it can be generated and used would depend on the design architecture of the system. UIDAI, a statutory authority, is responsible for Aadhaar enrolment and authentication, issuance of Aadhaar numbers as well as ensuring the security of identity information and authentication records of individuals. Its measures on data protection and development of new standards on technologies like Aadhaar-Pay are ongoing. The organization, however, currently finds itself in a situation where the provisions of the very law (Aadhaar Act 2016) under which it was established has been challenged in the country’s highest court of law. Toeing the government directive, banks, utilities and credit card issuers are repeatedly asking customers to link their Aadhaar details to respective accounts by 31 December 2017, failing which services would be discontinued. Critics of Aadhaar are resisting such coercion to link Aadhaar with multiple service providers. They are hoping that some of these rules may change after the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> ruling. The apex court hearing on the Aadhaar case is scheduled to begin on November 28.

To ensure security, Aadhaar may add security layer with dummy numbers

As the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court">Supreme Court</a> extended voluntary use of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=aadhar">Aadhaar</a> card to government schemes, the Employees' <keyword id="45028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Provident-Fund">Provident Fund</keyword> Organisation (<keyword id="6372438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPFO">EPFO</keyword>) is planning to launch online PF withdrawal facility by March end. 
 
With online facility, PF claims will be settled in three hours of receiving an application. 
 
"We have written to the Labour Ministry for approvals for starting an online PF withdrawal facility. We are hopeful of launching this by March end after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling," said Central Provident Fund Commissioner K K Jalan. 
 
"During this month, we will start settling all PF withdrawal claims having Aadhaar numbers within three days against the mandated period of 20 days though the claims will be filed manually only,” added Jalan. 
 EPFO has also become the registrar of the Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UIDAI">UIDAI</keyword>) for purpose of enrolment. 
 
But for the online facility, your Unique (portable PF) Account Numbers (UANs) should be seeded with Aadhaar numbers, including the bank account details. 
 
EPFO website claims that the authority has issued 5.6 crore <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UAN">UANs</a>, out of which 92.88 lakh subscribers have provided their Aadhaar numbers and 2.75 crore bank account details. 
 
EPFO has verified 64.67 lakh Aadhaar numbers and 1.9 crore banks accounts for seeding those with UANs. At present, there are 1.99 crore subscribers who have actually activated their UANs.

PF withdrawal to go online! Settlement will be within 3 hours

Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>, while replying to a question in Lok Sabha, said Aadhaar number will be compulsory for filing <keyword id="6355828" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-returns">Income Tax Returns</keyword> (ITR), rejecting opposition’s move to block the proposal. 
 
Jaitley said making Aadhaar number mandatory will curb tax evasion and frauds. 
 
"Aadhaar has biometric details, so its chances of misuse become minimal. When the country has so much technology, and when it is being put to use, then why create such a hue and cry about it? It is an anti-evasion measure which will benefit the country. So the government considers it right to implement it," he said. 
 He was replying to a debate on the <keyword id="123776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Bill">Finance Bill</keyword> 2017, which was later passed by the House along with 40 official amendments, including the one on reducing the cap on cash transactions from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 2 lakh from April 1. 
 
The amendments also included the merger of tribunals of different ministries and a proposal for launching electoral bonds. 
 
Jaitley said the cap on cash transactions is being reduced to curb generation of black money and the move to introduce electoral bonds is for cleansing the political funding. 
 
"To encourage digital economy and to discourage cash economy, I had proposed in Budget that there will be a ban on cash transactions of over Rs 3 lakh. I am making it Rs 2 lakh by an amendment," he said.

Moreover, parents are required to be aware of all the possible ways in which the information can be used. Parents also have the right to know the recipient of the information. Use of Aadhaar number by state or corporate body An entity can use Aadhaar as an identity proof, if the UIDAI is satisfied that it is complying with the regulation. Disclosing Information Any Aadhaar related information shall be disclosed if the High Court or Supreme Court orders to do so. Further, officers above the rank of a Secretary can order to reveal Aadhaar information. Registering complaint The Aadhaar Bill is going to allow individuals to take certain cases of misinformation and disclosure of identity of court. Previously, court were allowed to look into the matter only if UIDAI has registered a complaint. Penalties for violating the law The Bill can impose penalties upto ₹100 million along with jail term on all private entities who breach the provisions of Aadhaar Bill. Creation of UIDAI Fund A new Unique Identification Authority of India Fund will be created to collect all the fees and revenue by the UIDAI. These funds are likely to cover all the expenses of the UIDAI. Previously, the revenues were added to the Consolidated Fund of India. The amendments focused on showing only the name, gender and address on the Aadhaar through the 256-bit encryption. Further, India’s law minister reiterated the idea of government to roll out a strong framework to protect data.

Govt wants digital India, but what about digital security?

In case you are eligible to obtain an <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> number, you would need to quote your Aadhaar number when you apply for a permanent account number (PAN) and in your <keyword id="104359" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="income-tax-return">income tax return</keyword> from July onwards. As per the government, Aadhaar-enabled biometric identification will ensure that nobody can obtain multiple PANs; it would also help the government in keeping an eye on tax evaders. Even if your income is below the tax limit and you are not required to file returns, you would need to link your PAN and Aadhaar number. In case that’s not done, your PAN will be liable to become invalid from a date that the government would soon announce, as per section 139AA of the Act. However, the recent order from <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> is a relief for people who possess a PAN but do not have an Aadhaar and have not even applied for one. In order to ease the process of linking PAN and Aadhaar, the IT department has announced the process on its e-filing portal. You can visit the income tax e-filing portal at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ and enter your user id and password so that you can access your profile. If you don’t have a profile there, you can register on the portal by entering basic registration details such as PAN, name and date of birth. After logging in, go to the "Profile Settings" tab and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ in the drop down menu. This would open a new form where you’d need to enter your name, date of birth, gender as per PAN records, your Aadhaar number and your name as per Aadhaar records. After submitting these details and entering the text in the captcha code, a success message would be displayed confirming the linking of Aadhaar with PAN. You would also receive a confirmation email on your registered ID. Here’s everything you need to know about linking your Aadhaar with PAN

New Delhi, Dec 26 () The government has made Aadhaar mandatory for subscribers of the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY), a pension scheme for senior citizens.
 The scheme, which envisages an assured rate of return of 8 per cent annually, is being implemented through Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). The scheme was announced in Union Budgets of 2017-18 and 2018-19.
 "An individual eligible for receiving the benefit under the scheme shall hereby be required to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number (the unique 12-digit biometric identity number) or undergo Aadhaar authentication," according to a finance ministry notification.
 The notification, dated December 23, has been issued under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016.
 It further said any individual desirous of availing benefit under the scheme who does not possess the Aadhaar number or has not yet been enrolled for Aadhaar, "shall be required to apply for Aadhaar enrolment before registering for the scheme".
 In cases where Aadhaar authentication fails due to poor biometrics, the the ministry's Department of Financial Services through its implementing agency will make provisions to help the beneficiaries get the Aadhaar number.
 Further, where biometric or Aadhaar one-time password or time-based OTP authentication is not possible, benefit under the scheme may be given on the basis of physical Aadhaar letter whose authenticity may be verified through the quick response (QR) code printed on the Aadhaar letter, the notification said.
 In the Budget 2018-19, the maximum limit under PMVVY was doubled to Rs 15 lakh per senior citizen. The scheme is available for subscription till March 2020. DP NKD HRS

Aadhaar made mandatory for PMVVY pension scheme

According to a notification dated June 1, 2017, the deadline for doing this is December 31, 2017 and accounts where this is not done are to be made inoperable after this date. However, even if you have submitted your Aadhaar details at your branch there is still a possibility that the linkage between the two was not done correctly by the bank or it may be that the bank has not linked Aadhaar with your account because they have misplaced your details. Following the culmination of a four-month-long hearing in the Supreme Court last month, it seems that the Indian government is acting on the <keyword id="6355135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Privacy">privacy</keyword> concerns related to the <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> biometric identification programme. Starting July 1st, Indians won’t be required to surrender their 12-digit Aadhaar ID to telecom operators as part of the know-your-customer (KYC) norms when purchasing a new <keyword id="6427652" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sim">SIM</keyword> card. Instead, according to a directive issued yesterday by India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Indians can submit a temporary 16-digit virtual ID to authenticate their details. The DoT has given telecom operators until the end of the month to adjust their systems to comply with the new norms. Furthermore, during the authentication process, they will not be allowed to store the Aadhar or virtual ID information of their customers in any of their systems or databases. The ruling has been received favourably so far. Rajan S Mathews, the Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India, stated, “We believe that this step will provide convenience and confidence to the subscribers to get an authentic verification conducted without having the fear of giving their Aadhaar number”. A temporary ID On April 2nd, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced the launch of the Virtual ID programme, tweeting <a href="https://resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/vidgeneration">a link </a>to a page where an Aadhar enrollee can generate the ID.  The Virtual ID gives people the option of authenticating their identities and complying with KYC requirements without sharing their Aadhaar card information. The 16-digit number is temporarily mapped with the user’s Aadhar number and can be regenerated a number of times. The UIDAI’s goal was to prevent the Aadhar details of enrollees being leaked and misused by offering a temporary ID as a substitute. The Supreme Court is still deliberating on whether it should be mandatory to link Aadhar information with <keyword id="6354485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobile">mobile</keyword> subscriptions, bank accounts and a number of other services. If the Virtual ID scheme is implemented successfully, it could pave the way for a decision in favour of the Aadhaar programme.

They won’t be able to file their income tax return online in time as the software is asking for a UID, or <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> number. Many expats can’t file their tax returns as the process won’t be complete without an Aadhaar number. Even though the Indian government had notified that the foreign citizens are not required to obtain Aadhaar card for tax filing purpose, they are still facing issues. "In several cases, the income tax e-filing system is not allowing expatriates to upload their returns without Aadhaar as they have been tagged as Indian citizens in the income tax database," Amit Maheshwari, partner at Ashok Maheshwary &amp; Associates LLP, told ET. In some cases, expats are asked to provide their foreign bank account when that's not required as per the law. NRIs, too, "are unable to upload their tax returns when they mention their country of residence", a person told ET. Several representations on the issue have been made to the government in the last couple of weeks. In this backdrop, expats and NRIs want the government to extend the deadline for filing the returns.
