Before the latest reading, the last uptick in the headline year-over-year rate was in March.Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 3.3% in October from a year ago, matching the forecast and the previous year-over-year increase.The Federal Reserve will likely want to see signs of inflation continuing to come down to its 2% target as Federal Open Market Committee members decide whether to continue cutting interest rates. There are still a lot of data releases to come out before the year's final scheduled FOMC meeting in December, including further reports for inflation measures like the CPI.The Fed decided in its November meeting to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-reserve-cuts-interest-rates-quarter-point-powell-inflation-election-2024-11">cut interest rates by 25 basis points</a>, which was largely expected and smaller than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cuts-interest-rates-how-much-september-fomc-powell-inflation-2024-9">September's 50-basis-point cut</a>.Before the latest CPI report, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch</a> showed investors were assigning around a 60% probability to a 25-basis-point cut in December. <keyword id="19895437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="keywords">Investment</keyword> in <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="equity-mutual-funds" source="keywords">equity mutual funds</keyword> surged over five-fold to Rs 94,151 crore in the June 2024 quarter against Rs 18,358 crore a year ago, driven by a strong <keyword id="21477327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-environment" source="keywords">economic environment</keyword>, supportive <keyword id="22575274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-fiscal-policies" source="keywords">government fiscal policies</keyword>, <keyword id="19900618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors" source="keywords">investors</keyword> confidence and robust <keyword id="21990858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-return" source="keywords">stock return</keyword>. This has also pushed the industry's assets under management (<keyword id="20019621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="keywords">AUM</keyword>) by 59 per cent to Rs 27.68 lakh crore in June from Rs 17.43 lakh crore a year ago, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (<keyword id="20090036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMFI" source="keywords">AMFI</keyword>) showed. The robust gain in the asset base was also replicated in the growth of investors in equity mutual funds, with the number of folios closing at 13.3 crore, adding an investor base of over 3 crore. The significant gain in equity folios indicates broader participation across investor segments, driven by improved <keyword id="19929245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-literacy" source="keywords">financial literacy</keyword> and accessible investment platforms, Trivesh D, COO of stock trading platform Tradejini, told PTI. According to the AMFI data, equity-oriented mutual fund schemes invested Rs 94,151 crore in the quarter ended June 2024. This comprises Rs 18,917 crore in April, Rs 34,697 crore in May and Rs 40,537 crore in June. The investment in equity-oriented mutual funds jumped five-fold to Rs 94,151 crore in the June quarter from Rs 18,358 crore in the quarter ended June 2023 and increased 32 per cent Rs 71,280 crore witnessed in the preceding March 2024 quarter. "The confluence of political stability, supportive government policies, and a favourable economic environment has significantly contributed to the impressive inflows into equity mutual funds, signalling a positive outlook for the sector," Trivesh said. Strong macroeconomic fundamentals, bolstered by supportive government fiscal policies like higher-than-budgeted tax collection growth, reduced revenue expenditures, and increased capital spending have helped in increasing the allocation to equity mutual funds, Feroze Azeez, Deputy CEO, Anand Rathi Wealth, told PTI. He further said that investors' confidence in the markets and historically strong returns given by Indian equities with relatively low risk also helped investors to move towards equity mutual funds. Additionally, the shift was further fuelled by a transition from traditional investments like deposits to mutual funds in pursuit of higher returns. "The long-term outlook remains positive, with expectations of 11-13 per cent annual returns for Indian equities, and equity mutual funds potentially delivering even higher returns," Azeez said. Within the equity segment, sectoral or thematic category attracted Rs 46,731 crore during the quarter under review, followed by Multi-cap (Rs 10,077 crore), Flexicap (Rs 8,387 crore), Large &amp; Midcaps (Rs 7,948 crore), Smallcap (Rs 7,197 crore) and Midcap (Rs 6,927 crore). Large-cap funds witnessed an infusion of Rs 1,991 crore during the April-June quarter of the current financial year (FY25). Moreover, inflows into the systematic investment plan (<keyword id="19956399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIP" source="keywords">SIP</keyword>) have been rising continuously for the past several months. The monthly SIP contributions crossed the Rs 21,000 crore mark in June, with the total inflow reaching an all-time high of Rs 21,262 crore. This shows investors' commitment to disciplined and long-term investing. The fund infusion through the SIP route was Rs 62,537 crore in the April-June quarter of FY25, a remarkable surge from Rs 43,211 crore in the same quarter preceding the fiscal.

As of 2021, according to Crunchbase, it had raised over $1 billion from investors.However, a 2023 <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-data-stolen-hacked-sold-dark-web-2023-10">data hack</a> kicked off a series of problematic hurdles that 23andMe just can't seem to clear.News that hackers were selling user data — which included birth details and names — on the <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-data-stolen-hacked-sold-dark-web-2023-10">dark web</a> broke that October. The company confirmed in December that <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23and-me-hack-data-breach-personal-data-2023-12">hackers had accessed ancestry data</a> for just under 7 million users. A data breach notification filing in January said it took 23andMe <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-hackers-breached-customer-accounts-took-five-months-to-detect-2024-1">five months</a> to realize hackers had stolen the data.The incident led to a class action lawsuit, which 23andMe settled this September for $30 million, according to Reuters.Less than a week later, the independent directors of 23andMe's board resigned in a letter addressed to CEO and cofounder <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/23andme-ceo-anne-wojcicki-life-career-family-photos-2021-3">Anne Wojcicki</a>.The letter said the directors "wholeheartedly support" 23andMe's mission, but "it is also clear that we differ on the strategic direction for the Company going forward."<div type="image" title="23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki" height="1991" width="2982" msid="113994219" hostid="261" sizebytes="309018"></div>The Wall Street Journal reported that despite earning $299 million in revenue in 2023 and $219 million in 2024, the company never made a profit. She walked back that statement later that month in a separate filing, but the damage was done.Outlets like The Atlantic reported that Wojcicki's potential sale of 23andMe could also mean the sale of user data. The director of cybersecurity at Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit focused on digital privacy, urged their 186,000 X followers to delete their data from 23andMe. That post garnered more than 531,000 views in three days.The X post touched on concerns plaguing the DNA test kit industry: Your private DNA data may not stay private."Data is data — once it's out there, it's very hard to control," <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/privacy-security-risks-genetic-testing-23andme-ancestry-dna-2019-2">James Hazel</a>, a biomedical researcher, told Business Insider in 2019.23andMe says the personal data it collects includes registration information like birth date, genetic information like a user's genotype, sample information like saliva, and self-reported information."Beyond our contracted laboratory, with which we work to process a customer's sample and deliver their results, customer information will not be shared with any other entity unless they provide us with consent to do so," a 23andMe spokesperson told Business Insider.The spokesperson said the company doesn't share data with "employers, insurance companies, law enforcement agencies or any public databases."<h2 id="412bbc19-4bef-4532-9c97-39228ce572c0">Here's how to ask 23andMe to delete your data</h2>Users who want their personal information removed from 23andMe can opt-out in the "23andMe Data" section in Account Settings. But 23andMe says it is legally required to retain some information."While we will delete the majority of your Personal Information, we are required to retain some information to comply with our legal obligation," the company's website says."23andMe and/or our contracted genotyping laboratory will retain your Genetic Information, date of birth, and sex as required for compliance with applicable legal obligations... even if you chose to delete your account," the company's privacy statement says.The privacy statement says 23andMe will also retain some information associated with user accounts, like email addresses.For users who participated in 23andMe Research, their genetic data and self-reported information won't be used in future research projects."Customers always have the option to delete their account at any time, and once the request is confirmed, we will immediately and automatically begin the deletion process," the spokesperson said. "Deleting an account and associated data will permanently delete the data associated with all profiles within the account. If a customer asks us to store their genetic samples, they will be discarded."
