As nationwide protests by doctors continue over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee case at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, <keyword id="19934441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="patients" source="keywords">patients</keyword> at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital are experiencing delays in treatment. Emergency OTs are operating normally, but there is a 40% reduction in elective OTs," he said. Adarsh Tiwari, another cab driver, said, "The companies offer us very less rate for our services. Due to this, we are unable to pay the installments of our vehicles and meet other expenses. We are unable to ensure good education for our children and sufficient food for our families." People took to social media to complaint about delay in getting cabs and cancellations. Another X user, Kshitiz Agarwal said,"Is it only me or uber doesn't work anymore now? Couldn't find a uber cab for 30 mins nowadays even at posh localities like south extension, new delhi #uber #ola." DATTCU president Verma said that "we will also be holding a protest at Jantar Mantar to demand a ban on plying of private vehicles by cab aggregator companies. Why are we made to take permits and pay taxes when private vehicles are allowed to ply? We demand that the government impose a ban on them."

New Delhi, A recent AIIMS study, which analysed published reports on non-alcoholic <keyword id="519596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fatty-liver-disease" source="Orion">fatty liver disease</keyword> in India, states that over one-third (38 per cent) of Indians have <keyword id="6691344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fatty-liver" source="Orion">fatty liver</keyword> or non-alcoholic fatty <keyword id="6406501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liver-disease" source="Orion">liver disease</keyword>.The phenomenon is not restricted to adults, but affects nearly 35 per cent of the children as well, says the study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology in June 2022. "Non-alcoholic fatty <keyword id="6361706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liver" source="Orion">liver</keyword> disease (NAFLD) is often unrecognised since it does not cause symptoms in the early stage, but may progress in some patients with severe liver disease. "The cause of 'fatty liver' or 'steatohepatitis' is the recent westernisation of our diets which involves increased intake of fast food, lack of healthy fruits and vegetables on the plate, and an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle," Dr Anoop Saraya, Head of Department of Gastroenterology, said. He said the ailment is considered the "liver counterpart" of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Although there is currently no approved drug treatment for fatty liver, the condition is reversible, he added. "The only way to conquer this new epidemic is to adopt a healthy lifestyle and achieve weight loss in obese individuals through adequate diet, restrict junk and sugary food intake, and exercise regularly," Saraya noted. Experts say alcohol intake remains a common cause of liver disease in India. Intake of alcohol can lead to "alcoholic hepatitis" and cirrhosis, which can progress to liver cancer and death. "Alcohol accounts for most of the cases of severe liver damage which are admitted to hospitals with diagnosis such as 'acute chronic liver failure' and these have a high mortality," Dr Saraya stated. What makes the matters worse is a high recidivism rate in the few patients who survive this disease, and the non-availability of any specific drug to treat alcoholic hepatitis. The only way to avoid this deadly disease is to avoid the alcohol intake as no alcohol is safe for the liver. Use of common over-the-counter drugs, which are generally considered safe, may also lead to liver damage, according to experts. Drugs used for the treatment of tuberculosis, antibiotics, antiepileptic drugs, and chemotherapy, are also associated with liver injury, as are those taken as complementary and alternative medications (CAM). A study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here reported 67 per cent deaths among patients with antituberculosis drug-related acute liver failure. Of all patients with antituberculosis drug-related acute liver failure, 60 per cent were started on medicines without confirmed tuberculosis. Self-medication must be avoided, Dr Saraya asserted. Another AIIMS study has shown that hepatitis A and E constitute 30 per cent of cases of acute liver failure, with high mortality of over 50 per cent. This study was conducted by the Department of Gastroenterology and HNU, AIIMS, New Delhi. "The spread of hepatitis A and E can be largely prevented by ensuring access to clean drinking water," Saraya added.

They are also partnering on an upcoming clinical trial, which will start in South Africa within the next few months before being expanded to other countries. Despite a rising number of newborn deaths caused by AMR, very few effective antibiotics have been adequately studied to treat serious bacterial infections such as neonatal sepsis, the authors said. As many as 40 antibiotics approved for use in adults since 2000, only four have included dosing information for newborns in their labels, they said. According to the report, ethical concerns, logistical issues and regulatory requirements have made it difficult to conduct clinical research in newborns. There is a long delay in completing paediatric regulatory studies and they are also not harmonised globally to demonstrate clinical utility in newborns, it said. More boys than girls with cancer in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> are being diagnosed with the disease and the probable cause for this is gender bias in society, according to a study published in The Lancet Oncology. The researchers collected individual data of children aged 0-19 years with cancer extracted from the hospital-based records of three cancer centres in India between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2019. They also used data from two population-based cancer registries: PBCRs in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2014 and Madras Metropolitan Tumour Registry between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2017. The researchers from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Cancer Institute (WIA) Chennai calculated the male to female sex ratio from the three hospitals in the context of the ratio in the corresponding PBCRs. This ratio allowed them to see how many boys with cancer were seeking treatment for each girl seeking treatment. The team separately analysed the male to female ratios of patients undergoing stem cell transplant which is a comparatively expensive procedure used in cancer care. "We observed that among nearly 11,000 patients registered in the PBCRs, there was significant skew in favour of boys for getting diagnosed with cancer. Similarly, among the 22,000 children with cancer enrolled in the three hospitals, we saw that more boys were seeking treatment than girls," said Professor <keyword id="15658843" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sameer-bakhshi" source="Orion">Sameer Bakhshi</keyword>, from Department of Medical Oncology, <keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword> New Delhi. "However, when we looked at sex ratios among patients seeking cancer care in the context of sex ratios at diagnosis, the skew in sex ratios was no longer apparent. This tells us that the bias towards boys originates at the community level. Once children are brought forward and diagnosed, there is no further gender bias in seeking treatment," Bakhsh, the corresponding author of the study, told PTI. The researchers noted that lesser girls were seeking treatment in hospitals in centres in Northern India as compared to Southern India. The disparity between the genders was more for patients coming from rural as compared to urban areas. This may have to do variations in social fabric in different parts of the country, they said. The study also found that lesser number of girls were coming to the hospital if the distance of the centre from their home was over 100 kilometers, signifying that if costs related to treatment increase, the bias would likely increase. The researchers observed that the male to female ratios in Delhi have been improving over the last 15 years. "The study clearly shows that more boys with cancer are being diagnosed than girls and the probable cause for this is gender bias in society," <keyword id="321831" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bakhshi" source="Orion">Bakhshi</keyword> said. "Symptomatic girls might not be brought forward for evaluation and diagnosis, leading to fewer cancer diagnoses in girls. The nature of societal mind set affects this bias since we see that societies that are more patriarchal (like that in North of India) show a greater bias," he explained. Sex ratios are also affected by the cost of treatment. The researchers saw that less girls seek cancer care in situations where out-of-pocket expenditures are higher such as when obtaining care from private hospitals or residing far from the treatment Centre. This implies that the gender bias observed is an interplay of multiple social and economic factors. The researchers noted that the first step in solving any problem is to first recognise it, which this study does. To overcome the bias, joint efforts are needed towards bringing about a change in the mindset of the population as well as decreasing the cost of treatment borne by patients, especially for girl children. "We will have to use education as a tool to do away with the patriarchal mind set of society. From our data, we believe that if free treatment is provided for cancer to girl children, it will help in reducing the sex disparity in seeking care for cancer," Bakhshi added. More boys with cancer being diagnosed than girls in India: Lancet study

He said 1,265 cancer patients have been provided free treatment under the <keyword id="15598908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukh-Mantri-Cancer-Rahat-Kosh" source="Orion">Mukh Mantri Cancer Rahat Kosh</keyword> in hospitals empanelled with the government. He said instructions have been issued to the health officials for giving impetus to the implementation of the government's health schemes and programmes so that the public may get benefit. "Punjab has a high prevalence of cancer and its treatment involves high costs which is not affordable for the patients belonging to the poor. In order to safeguard the life of the poor patients, this scheme has proven to be a boon for them as they can get free treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh in any of the 19 hospitals empanelled with the government, including prestigious like <keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword> in Delhi, PGI in Chandigarh, CMC and DMC, both in <keyword id="6367131" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ludhiana" source="Orion">Ludhiana</keyword>, and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Sangrur," the minister said in a statement. "Any resident suffering from cancer can apply for this cashless treatment scheme at the empanelled hospital. Also the procedure to approve such cases has been digitalised," the minister said. Punjab provided free cancer treatment worth ₹13.54 crores to patients

Toxicology experts will soon train doctors working in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and district hospitals in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> and other places in the country about the protocols for diagnosis and treatment of farmers exposed to chemicals and pesticides, a medical expert has said. Toxicology as a subject is quite neglected in the medical curriculum, Dr Tejas Prajapati, a clinical medical toxicologist at the LG Hospital in Ahmedabad, said at a press conference on Wednesday after a symposium on 'Occupational health hazards in agriculture' held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (<keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword>), Nagpur. Doctors at the PHCs are the first contact in the case of a patient exposed to pesticides and chemicals. They are already loaded with various other medical programmes and works and a case of such a medical emergency is immediately sent to higher centres and the "<keyword id="2284670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="golden-period" source="Orion">golden period</keyword>" is lost, he noted.
