In addition to powering ultra-low latency connections, which allow downloading full-length high-quality video or movie to a mobile device in a matter of seconds (even in crowded areas), <keyword id="59798" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fifth-generation" source="Orion">Fifth Generation</keyword> or 5G would enable solutions such as e-health, connected vehicles, more immersive augmented reality and metaverse experiences, life-saving use cases, and advanced mobile cloud gaming among others. The auction is being held for spectrum in various low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), mid (3300 MHz) and high (26 GHz) frequency bands. The bidding which started at 1000 hrs will continue till 1800 hrs and will carry over into the next day, if there exists a demand for spectrum and bidders are putting in bids. The number of days the auction ultimately stretches to will depend on the actual demand for radiowaves and the strategy of individual bidders, although the broad industry consensus is that it may last up to two days. India's biggest spectrum auction begins; 5G airwaves worth Rs 4.3 lakh cr on offer

The auction of over 72 GHz of the spectrum will be held by July-end, said an official statement detailing the decision taken by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>, at its meeting held on June 14. The spectrum auction will commence on July 26, 2022. Sources told PTI that the Cabinet has approved 5G auctions at reserve prices recommended by the sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). TRAI had earlier recommended about a 39 per cent reduction in the reserve or floor price for the sale of 5G spectrum for mobile services. While the 5G spectrum in nine frequency bands will be auctioned to telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, the Notice Inviting Applications -- bid-related document issued by DoT -- said big tech firms for the time being will be allowed to take the 5G spectrum for their captive non-public network, on lease from the telecom companies. The Notice Inviting Offer said direct allocation to the big tech companies will follow a demand study and sector regulator TRAI's recommendation on aspects such as pricing and modalities of such allocation. Big tech companies like Google have been seeking direct allocation of spectrum for applications such as machine-to-machine communications, IoT and AI, while telecom companies have been opposing direct allocation of 5G spectrum to them saying it will distort the level playing field and rob the government of revenues. "Enterprises setting up Captive Non-Public Network may obtain the spectrum on lease from TSPs (telecom service providers) having Access Service Authorization and establish their own isolated network. Required Licensing terms and conditions and Spectrum Leasing guidelines shall be issued by DoT," the Notice Inviting Applications said. As per the document, the government from time to time will publish required provisions and guidelines and licensing terms and conditions for enabling the setting up of Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN). According to the document, the auction is slated to start on July 26, 2022. Among other key dates to watch-out for is the pre-bid conference scheduled for June 20, 2022, submission of applications with a deadline of July 8, and pre-qualification of bidders on July 18. Mock auctions will be held on July 22 and 23, 2022. A total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a validity period of 20 years will be put to auction to be held by the end of July, 2022. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications to conduct spectrum auction through which spectrum will be assigned to the successful bidders for providing 5G services to public and enterprises," the official release said. The auction will be held for spectrum in various Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz) and High (26 GHz) frequency bands. Overall, the payment terms have been eased for bidders in the upcoming auction. Continuing the pace of telecom sector reforms, the Cabinet announced various progressive options with regard to the spectrum auction, for facilitating ease of doing business. "For the first time ever, there is no mandatory requirement to make upfront payment by the successful bidders. Payments for spectrum can be made in 20 equal annual instalments to be paid in advance at the beginning of each year," it said, adding this is expected to significantly ease cash flow requirements and lower the cost of doing business in this sector. The bidders would be given an option to surrender the spectrum after 10 years with no future liabilities with respect to balance instalments. No SUC (spectrum usage charges) will be charged for spectrum acquired in this auction. "The availability of sufficient backhaul spectrum is also necessary to enable the roll-out of 5G services. To meet the backhaul demand, the Cabinet has decided to provisionally allot 2 carriers of 250 MHz each in E-band to the Telecom Service Providers," the official statement said. The Cabinet also decided to double the number of traditional Microwave backhaul carriers in the existing frequency bands of 13, 15, 18 and 21 GHz bands, the release informed. The India market is gearing up 5G services, that will usher in ultra high speeds and spawn new-age services and business models, and the mega-auctions will pave the way for roll out of next generation services by telcos, in 2022-23. Indian govt approves 5G spectrum auctions, but telcos might not be happy

Led by <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword>, the mega <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="Orion">5G</keyword> spectrum auction ended on Monday after receiving record bids worth over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in 40 rounds spanning across seven days. 5G airwaves worth Rs 1,50,173 crore has been sold so far and the final tally is being prepared by the government, according to sources. Day six of the 5G spectrum auction on Sunday saw an incremental increase in the bidding figure after 37 rounds, with bids worth Rs 1,50,130 crore. According to industry analysts, Reliance Jio has placed bids for more than Rs 84,500 crore, while <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword>'s bids are worth more than Rs 46,500 crore. Vodafone Idea has placed bids of around Rs 18,500 crore, while a unit of <keyword id="118623" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-enterprises" source="Orion">Adani Enterprises</keyword> has bids of around Rs 5,000 crore. Jio and Airtel were fiercely engaged in intense bidding in <keyword id="3829976" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh-east" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh East</keyword> circle for the 1800MHz band. Devroop Dhar, Co-founder and board member, Primus Partners, said the auction stands testimony to the fact that the industry is willing and ready to expand further than ever before. "That is also the reason behind the key players finally going for the 700MHz bands. The 40 per cent cut down of the bands for Rs 3,927 crore per unit acted as an aid for the bidders," Dhar said. The expansive 700MHz band is built to cover densely populated regions such as India, which will truly benefit from this band and receive expansive 5G coverage. "As the bidding has been much higher than the previous auctions, the amount generated will add positively to the revenue and will help the government in the future while setting up the 5G infrastructure," Dhar added. While Reliance Jio may have an upper hand in terms of bundled handsets and their investments, other industry players also have an opportunity to compete in the industry as according to studies, Indian consumers claim to be willing to pay 50 per cent more for 5G-bundled plans. "Hence, the companies need to find an incentive to get their customers upgrade to 5G devices," Dhar said. Coming to the point, India’s telecom regulator – the <keyword id="12394776" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of</keyword> India (TRAI) – has finally put forward its recommendations for 5G spectrum auctions. Encouragingly, the regulator has recommended a 35-40% cut in the baseline 5G spectrum pricing. Telecom operators have been repeatedly asking for rationalised 5G spectrum prices, and the regulator seems to have heard their demands. However, these prices are for a 20-year licence, as opposed to the 30-year term that telecom players have been asking for. It remains to be seen how much enthusiasm Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea show during the 5G spectrum auctions, expected to take place in the first half of 2022. We should see some action on this front in the coming weeks. Do we actually need 5G? You must be wondering – do I really need 5G? What am I actually missing out on with just 4G? Honestly, 4G speeds in India are relatively on the lower side. According to an OpenSignal report, the average download speeds on 4G in the US range between 35-40 Mbps. In India, Reliance Jio tops with an average download speed of 29 Mbps. The slowest was 156 Mbps in Singapore, which is still over five times faster than Reliance Jio’s 4G speeds. 5G also comes with many other benefits like lower latency, much higher capacity of connected devices, less interference and improved efficiency. Lower latency would benefit those who livestream, do a lot of video calls or play games on their smartphones. Latency here refers to the delays in communication over a network. Lower the latency, the lower the lags and better the experience. Another important area where 5G is a clear winner is the network capacity. If you have been to concerts, sports matches or anywhere where there is a huge crowd, you would have noticed that your 4G internet is barely usable, and calling is a huge problem. 5G solves this with much higher network capacity, so you will not only be able to experience a fast internet connection, but calling should also be relatively better. All-in-all, 5G offers plenty of real world performance improvements over 4G. Does my phone support 5G? Coming to the all-important question – does my phone support 5G? According to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/indians-are-now-consuming-over-12000-petabytes-of-4g-data-every-month/slidelist/90221728.cms">report</a> by telecom gear provider Nokia, there are over 10 million 5G devices in India currently. The answer to this is the easier part – most phones with 5G support come with the 5G tag, so if you are confused, or don’t remember, all you have to do is check the phone box. The more important part here is to understand if your 5G phone will actually support India’s 5G bands. Since the auctions haven’t taken place and there is no clarity either from the telecom companies about which 5G bands will be supported by them, this is the piece of the puzzle that can be solved only with time. In the meantime, if you are looking to buy a new smartphone, the best thing that you can do right now is carefully consider how many 5G bands are supported by your new phone. Not every 5G phone is made equal, though, so make sure your new phone supports these bands.

<ul><li>The <keyword id="82181" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Meteorological-Organisation">World Meteorological Organisation</keyword> (WMO) is expressed concerned that bandwidths allocated for <keyword id="1671941" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-technology">5G technology</keyword> could put the future of other applications, like early weather warning systems, at risk. </li><li>They claim that the decision to allocation 24.25 to 27.5 GHz for 5G technology would impair the accuracy of data collection. </li><li>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has expressed similar concerns as it opposed the use of the 26 GHz band for 5G deployment since its used for satellite service. </li></ul>It's not just ISRO — global agencies are also worried that 5G airwaves will interfere with their satellites. The World Meteorological Organisation (<a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/news/wmo-expresses-concern-about-radio-frequency-decision">WMO</a>) has expressed concern over the allocation of bandwidth — 24.25 to 27.5 GHz — for 5G technology during the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19). They claim that it will severely hamper the functioning of a number of different technologies — including weather early warning systems. "The race to release 5G technology threatens to squeeze out other radio-frequency dependent technologies, including the world's critical national severe weather early warning systems," stated the WMO. And the Europen Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) agrees. "The agreement reached in Egypt falls far short of ensuring 5G applications do not interfere with weather observations at 24 GHz," it said. The fight over airwaves The world's radio spectrum is a limited resource. Only a narrow band is actually useful for communication purposes. Within that narrow band, everything and everyone — from radio, TV, mobile phones, and WiFi to aircraft, ships, and the military — need to function. According to ISRO, it needs the 26GHz bandwidth to operate its satellites. 5G services could interfere with the data being sent back and forth. The WMO and ECMWF are more concerned with the opposite end of the bandwidth between 23.6 to 24 GHz. "That could lead to nearly ten times more interfering out-of-band emissions than what the WMO had recommended allowing," said the international agency. The catch is that the new regulations for bandwidth use for 5G will only come into effect after 1 September 2027. "The risk, therefore, is that 5G could roll-out more quickly than initially anticipated, creating an unregulated increase in interference in the 24GHz," explained the WMO. This means that telecom operators will be incentivised to deploy their 5G technologies before 2027 because there will be no regulations till then. Even when the regulations are enforced, they won't be asked to replace their technology — only adhere to more stringent standards. "Potential effects of this could be felt across multiple impact areas including aviation, shipping, agricultural meteorology and warning of extreme events as well as our common ability to monitor climate change in the future," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement. Telecom companies join hands to seek reservation of 5G airwaves

<ul><li>India's former telecom regulator Pradip Baijal has explained how India has had trouble managing its spectrum roll out for next-gen communications technology over the last few decades.</li><li>The latest in this telecom - 5G - is also facing similar hurdles in India, with the government yet to finalise guidelines and announce auction of airwaves.</li><li>He also explained how different use-cases of 5G are relevant and important to India - from the point of view of consumers as well as the industry.</li></ul>India always had problems in dealing with spectrum. We wasted valuable wireless spectrum for fixed line services in 1995, unlike any other country, after the erroneous decision that expensive mobile phones were not for the poor Indians. The decision was reversed in 2004, but led to a lot of inspired criticism by mobile incumbents. Earlier, the government approved a Convergence Bill in 2001, for more efficient use of spectrum, but was not approved. The government/regulator, therefore, approved a Unified Access License in 2004, reduction in interconnect charges and tariff forbearance. But, it took inefficiently long to bring in these changes (it had to be done in stages, by many regulatory efforts). Unified License reduced tariffs 50 times, but increased government revenues. Mobile numbers growth immediately increased 10 times, and gradually 200 times, three times ever the leader, China. 3G spectrum auctions were efficient later, though delayed, and showed the huge loss in 2G allocation and crony capitalism involved, the basis of the CAG report. The allocations led to litigation and differing and controversial judgments by the Supreme Court/CBI Court, the issue still remaining open, but this was one of the issues on which the UPA lost heavily to NDA, in the ultimate court of elections in 2014. 4G auctions were conducted efficiently, even though they were delayed, and now we have come to 5G auction issues, with an ET news item commenting, "India is set to miss the '5G bus' following the lack of preparedness, unavailability of sufficient spectrum, absence of encouraging use cases, and uncertainty around radio waves sale for the next generation of telecom services." This is despite India appointing A.J. Paulraj (winner of the Marconi Prize) Committee to give the recommendations to the steps required. They gave the report in mid-2018, and despite giving the schedule, we have not moved fast. In the past, Prime Minister Modi-led government maintained that it "won't afford to miss 5G bus" like in the case of 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies that were deployed in India way later than many countries, thus losing the many early user advantages. 5G and India Before we discuss, let us understand the nature of use of 5G. For a layman, 5G is just next generation wireless infrastructure which will provide them voice and data services. However, it will impact much more due to its bit-level intelligence characteristics. 5G will provide an array of network intelligence which will get translated into precise and demand-led resource allocation. 1G came in 1980s and provided basic voice services, 2G in 1990s and enabled voice and SMS services due to its digital standards, 3G came in 2000s and introduced data services along with voice and SMS that enabled multimedia services. 4G pure IP network, came in 2010s, and enabled the application services and partially merged the telecom and information technology which gave boom to platform services. The architecture of 5G is designed to handle the connection of billions of devices including industrial machines with seamlessness and reliable data transfer with much faster speed. 5G is not only about high speed boost but it is about the intelligence at the bit level and low latency which will make it the foundational tech for multiple new tech., including self-driven cars, AR &amp; VR, telemedicine, robotic surgery, powering future smart cities, IoT, m2m, AI and manufacturing. 5G will change the future war fighting too due to increased situational awareness to increase the command and control of the battlefield. Once these networks come, 2G and 3G networks can be abolished, like in other countries for better overall spectrum utilization. We have not started. Industrial revolutions and change It has been shown that industrial revolutions change the world. Hirschman had said that these revolutions occur every 70 years. This was proved in IR 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. The US and the West's GDP went up five to six times in IR 1.0 &amp; 2.0, while India and China went down 10 times (colonial loot was also the reason). Growth reversal with IR 3.0 But IR 3.0 changed the world with the technology being on a connected net and with globalization, available to the Third World (right from the beginning). Of course, the US helped China a lot post 1980, in technology dispersal, and helping China with accelerated WTO membership in 2001. This led to China growing eight times and India 2.5 times in a few years. IR 4.0 and 5.0 The world is now moving to the fourth and the fifth industrial revolutions in quick succession. Providentially, these revolutions are also happening on the same wire or wireless lines as in IR 3.0, and we have bright Indian minds working in the digital sector like Nadella, Pichai, Arvind Kuar, Banga, Tata, Kohli, Nilekani, Narayana Murthy, Patni, Soota, Premji, and millions of others located in Silicon Valleys around the world. The most exciting additions to the list are Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla. They have kept the mobile sector alive despite crony capitalism, and given the appropriate ambience, should do very well now. Through them, and despite Covid, the world has shown confidence in the Indian economy. China should do well because of enormous investment, past technology thefts, uninhibited US support till 2015, and R&amp;D. The fifth IR will happen with IT getting connected to human minds (AI and beyond). IR 5.0 having reached the human mind, perhaps cannot move beyond, and the 6th IR has to be in another area, maybe the planets, as visualized by Jeff Bezos. Again, India is well-placed. Creating an appropriate environment is the key. Role of private sector It may also be recalled that the 2G rollout had created strong private sector companies and from 10 per cent private network, it had gone to 80 per cent (though the public sector had grown too). Later, despite crony capitalism, they had survived, and are today, India's main hope to take us forward. With 5G networks being more powerful, they will surely impact GDP growth much more than the earlier generation networks and move the country towards Namo's $5 trillion economy in 2024. Fiscal pressure on the government - we can ill-afford to ignore: We are today also hit by Covid, huge bank NPAs, financial crisis, fiscal deficits and fall in investments. 5G rollout is an opportunity for huge network (and downstream) investments by existing private sector companies and their networks all over the country, without putting any fiscal deficit pressure on the government. I had, therefore, anticipated in my China book and articles, that the present is 'providence' for India, like it was 'providence' for China in the 80s with an imaginary 'cold war'. Pricing issues A word about pricing here - our entire 2G revolution came after tariff forbearance, and liberal availability, connectivity and regulatory reforms. Obviously, once 5G revolutions get moving, the disruptions would be higher. Indian economy/GDP did well during IR 3.0, its DNA being more IT-centric, demonstrated by high growth in these sectors during some periods of IR 3.0, when regulations were right (2004 to 2010), particularly vis-a-vis China, and also the Indian minds being more IT-centric, demonstrated by the success of IT (software) and mobile revolutions. World digital economy In 2019, the world celebrated the first full year when more than half of the world (51.2 per cent, or 3.9 billion people) had begun to participate in the global digital economy by logging onto the internet, from almost zero a couple of years back. The world is turning fully digital, and networks converging very fast. China has touched 840 million subscriber base and will be 1 billion at the end of 2020, with superior speed, whereas India has only touched 600 million broadband subscribers. The world will thus transform itself to a form that during IR 4.0 and 5.0 the versatile 4 and 5G networks will be more valuable than all other infrastructure, like roads, rail and air transportation systems etc. Looking at the future, China has created companies which are leading in 5G, AI, quantum computing and other digital products and shaping up the digital behaviour of the people because they are deploying networks faster and learning by doing it. China is also leading in the standardization and patents of the digital ecosystem, manufacture of equipment etc. In contrast, the Indian 5G process is yet to commence (allocation of spectrum and installation of 5G equipment), though we have done extremely well despite late start in the past. India can grow in IR 4.0 given its human capital pool, the start in the use of algorithm prowess and an established IT hub, only if we install 4G and 5G systems adequately. But expensive and presently unviable (for India, since IR 4.0 and 5.0 industries and services have not started) 5G systems are likely to come in slow. Also, the spectrum and equipment prices are anticipated to be high. Unless both spectrum and equipment prices are low and heavily backloaded, I do not see India coming out of the jigsaw puzzle, and not falling back severely in the digital war. And if we miss India's turnaround moment, India's vast market and trained manpower will be used by advanced countries to develop 5G / IR4.0 and 5.0 networks fast. The Paulraj Committee recommended that 5G will mature between 2019 and 2024. India should take lead and become an innovator in 5G applications. India's former telecom regulator shows how much India is lagging behind in the 5G pursuit

<ul><li>By 2025, 5G networks will carry half of the world’s mobile data traffic — just not in India. </li><li><keyword id="1671940" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-network">5G network</keyword> penetration in India will be at 11% while more developed parts of the world will exceed 50%. </li><li>It’s only in 2019 that the number of 4G subscriptions are expected to exceed 2G subscriptions in India. </li></ul>India’s data usage is growing by the day and for the first time, in 2019, 4G mobile subscriptions as expected to exceed 2G subscriptions. But, the breakthrough comes at a time when 5G networks around the world are going live and India is yet to begin the auction of its airwaves. <div type="image" title="mobilesubs_edited" msid="72226070" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Mobile subscriptions in India&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

 More than half of North East Asia, Western Europe and North America will be on 5G by 2025, according to Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report. But in India, 5G will only account for 11% of total mobile subscriptions. The Indian region — which also includes Nepal and Bhutan — will be the slowest to adopt 5G, second only to the Middle East and Africa, where 5G penetration forecasted to be at 7%. "The mass-market adoption of advanced use cases fueled by 5G is expected later in India than in other regions," noted the report. Finally on the 4G bandwagon India’s 4G subscriptions are set to increase by 150 million during 2019 and surpass 2G technology. This means that the 4G network will now account for 57% of the mobile subscriptions by the end of the year, hitting the half-way mark for the first time. "As the transformation toward more advanced technologies continues in India, LTE is forecast to represent 80 percent of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2025," noted Ericsson’s report. It’s also a milestone for smartphones. Being more affordable has increased their usage from 48% to 54% over the past year. And, more are anticipated. "A total of 500 million additional smartphone users are expected in India by 2025," according to Ericsson. More smartphone users means more data consumption. Right now, India leads the region when it comes to usage per smartphone. By 2025, Ericsson forecasts are the traffic will triple. "Even if the traffic per existing smartphone user continues to grow significantly over time, the increase in the average traffic per smartphone is expected to moderate as more consumers in India acquire smartphones," noted the report. 5G’s many delays One of the primary reasons for the delay has been the pricing of the spectrum. Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Jio have been locked in a price war, bulking under debt and just got hit with outstanding licence fees — they claim that they can’t afford to buy 5G airwaves at the base price that the government has fixed for auctioning them. According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), India’s prices for the 5G spectrum are much higher than the international average. It’s not just that the airwaves are expensive. Telecom operators claim that revenue generation from 5G will be slow until use cases become more prevalent. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also threw a new wrench in the government’s plans. The agency announced that it needs the premium 26 GHz band — which is ideal for the 5G network — for their own weather satellites. Broken promises Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s IT minister, announced that the government would auction the 5G spectrum within the next 100 days when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 2019 general election. This was back in June. Months passed by and now, the commercial launch of 5G services is pegged to happen in 2020. Nonetheless, Prasad has assured stakeholders that the 5G auction will happen in the current financial year.

As the rest of the world flies high on 5G, most of India will still be on a 4G network in 2025

So what is 5G exactly? In short, 5G is the fifth iteration of wireless broadband, the "G" standing for generation. Although since 5G uses millimeter radio waves, which are a lot shorter than the waves 4G currently uses, 5G's range is a lot smaller. <h2>What is the frequency of 5G?</h2>Like the generation before it, 5G also uses a frequency called a Sub-6 network, which can process up to 6GHz worth of data. Unlike the generations before it, 5G can operate on three distinct radio spectrums: Low-band, mid-band, and high-band. For Android users, 5G phones are more accessible and include popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro. <h2>Why does 5G matter? </h2>If you only use your cellphone for the internet and chatting with friends, you may not care about 5G. But 5G is years in the making and offers more than just a streamlined Netflix experience to consumers. Manufacturers of autonomous cars require a constant, uninterrupted network connection in order to properly function. With 5G, data can be delivered much quicker to the vehicles, <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/5g-could-make-self-driving-cars-smarter-commutes-safer/">providing a safer experience</a>. A substantial number of studies of cellular technology over a span of decades has led to a consensus in the scientific and medical communities that cellular radiation is not dangerous.While there isn't yet a large body of data on any potential health risks of 5G in particular, the scientific community considers 5G to be safe. What is 5G? Here's what you need to know about the latest cellular network generation

The three private telecom operators -- <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword>, <keyword id="8217436" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bharti-airtel-and-vodafone-idea" source="Orion">Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea</keyword> -- are expected to buy spectrum worth ₹71,000 crore in the upcoming auction, leaving a vast majority of the radiowaves going under the hammer unsold, according to research firm <keyword id="252339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIFL-Securities" source="Orion">IIFL Securities</keyword>. The government will next month auction about ₹4.3 lakh crore worth of airwaves capable of offering fifth-generation or 5G telecom services, including ultra-high-speed internet. According to the report released on Wednesday, the government's in-principle nod to allocate spectrum directly to enterprises is going to have an adverse outcome of the mega auction. "While supply is abundant, the government has not cut TRAI's proposed reserve prices despite telcos' assertion that these were still high. We see telcos bidding only for 4 of the 10 bands and spectrum should be sold at base price. We estimate spectrum outlay of ₹37500 crore, Rs 25000 crore and ₹8500 crore for <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword>, Bharti and Vi," <keyword id="82050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIFL" source="Orion">IIFL</keyword> said. The research firm further said if all telecom operators avail the option of equal annual installments over 20 years, the government would receive Rs 6,200 proceeds in the current financial year. It said telcos may give the premium 700 MHz band spectrum a miss as they await further reserve-price cuts. Jio and Bharti may bolster their sub-1 GHz holdings by bidding for the 850 MHz and 900 MHz bands, respectively. "We do not assume any bids in the 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands. Bids for 3.6 GHz are somewhat tricky to predict," it said. The report further said telcos could bid for small quantities in the 3.6 GHz and 28 GHz bandd -- seen as the prime radiowaves for 5G technology -- as it can lead to large savings in spectrum usage charges. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a new order that will enable telecom operators to reduce spectrum usage charges proportionately on buying fresh radiowaves in the upcoming 5G auction. The time limit to start 5G trials is set at 100 days, where nearly 8600 MHz of mobile airwaves are likely to be auctioned, the new Telecom minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said on June 3, 2019, <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/spectrum-auction-including-for-5g-services-this-year-telecom-minister-ravi-shankar-prasad-2047270">NDTV</a> reported. At an estimated value of ₹6 trillion, the telecom auction is expected to be India’s largest ever. The plan for the auction was reportedly approved by the Digital Communications Commission (BCC). Aruna Sundararajan, Telecom secretary and DCC chairperson told TOI that even if all the spectrum is sold at reverse price, the government will net at least ₹5.8 trillion.
