JioBharat V3 and V4 4G feature phones launched at ₹1,099

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. BSNL to launch 4G services across India in August; to use indigenous technology

These contracts, which span a period of three years, are a crucial part of the company's Rs 55,000 crore capital expenditure (capex) plan. The investment will focus on expanding 4G coverage, launching 5G services, and meeting the growing demand for data in India. The debt-laden telecom operator announced the deal as it strives to regain market share in an increasingly competitive industry. Vodafone Idea has faced financial difficulties since its merger in 2018 between Vodafone Group's Indian arm and Aditya Birla Group's Idea Cellular. The company confirmed that supplies under the new contract would begin arriving in the next quarter. In a statement, Vodafone Idea said that its primary goal is to enhance 4G connectivity across India while simultaneously preparing to introduce 5G technology. ""Vodafone Idea has concluded a mega, about USD 3.6 billion (around Rs 300 billion), deal with Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung for supply of network equipment over a period of three years. The capex programme is directed towards expanding the 4G population coverage from 1.03 billion to 1.2 billion, launching 5G in key markets and capacity expansion in line with data growth," the company said in a statement. Vodafone Idea seals Rs 30,000 crore deal with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung for 4G and 5G expansion

New Delhi: India is set to enter a transformative "smartphone era" for cars in 2025, with the introduction of vehicles featuring 5G M2M connectivity and advanced AI technologies, according to the latest findings from Techarc's India Connected Consumer Report 2025. The report said the automotive sector will skip 4G and will enable connectivity using the latest 5G cellular technology. It observed that consumers are interested in spending money on improving the value proposition in terms of features, quality and experience rather than exploring too many smart devices. "22 per cent of the respondents shared about considering optimising their smart devices portfolio. Among the new set of categories, smart/connected cars is generating high interest among consumers. 55 per cent of the respondents said that they have come across news or information about smart/connected cars in recent times," it said. Starting in 2025, passenger cars in India will be equipped with 5G M2M connectivity, on-device GenAI, and cloud connectivity, making advanced technologies accessible across various price segments, it added. In-vehicle computing and artificial intelligence (GenAI), along with cloud applications, will become essential components of cars, enabling real-time data processing to support drivers effectively. Most cars priced at Rs 20 lakh and above will feature these technologies as standard. The cumulative revenues from automotive chipset companies have already surpassed USD 1.5 billion, with companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek leading the market. Some of the familiar applications that consumers will be able to use while driving include communication apps for audio/video conferencing, OTT entertainment apps, music streaming, podcasts, online shopping, vehicle maintenance, and servicing. "With connectivity and the technologies it brings to the cars, the future of the automobile sector will be fundamentally determined by the auto-technologies that will influence the overall experience, performance, comfort, safety and entertainment available to the drivers as well as the passengers. "So far, such features were seen as luxury or high-end experiences. But starting 2025, many of these will become mainstream for cars in India," Techarc AutoTech Analyst Sadat Ahanger said. With 22 automobile manufacturers producing nearly 5 million passenger vehicles annually in India, the country is poised to become a leader in the global 5G M2M market within the next few years, the report said. About 21 per cent of respondents said MG Motors is the leader in providing <keyword id="24016739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="connected-cars-in-India" source="keywords">connected cars in India</keyword>, followed closely by Kia Motors at 18 per cent and Tata Motors at 15 per cent, it added. Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki also ranked among the top-five brands in this category. The report draws insights from a survey of 4,500 "connected consumers" across metro and non-metro cities. The report defined a connected consumer as one owning at least 3 smart devices in addition to a smartphone.

India to shift to 'smartphone era' for cars embracing 5G, advanced AI in 2025: Report

Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. Bharti Televentures UK has inked an agreement with Altice UK to acquire about 9.99 per cent stake of BT Group's issued capital imminently with the rest about 14.51 per cent of BT's share capital is to be acquired post regulatory clearances. Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi's Altice UK, the largest shareholder in BT, has been struggling with high debt. "Bharti Global, the international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, a leading Indian business group with world-class companies in telecoms, digital infrastructure and space communications, has reached an agreement to acquire an interest in 24.5 per cent of the issued share capital of BT Group plc from Altice UK," Bharti said in a release. Bharti hopes the investment will further help create new synergies in the telecom sector between India and UK in the areas of AI and <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> R&amp;D and core engineering among others, "offering great potential to collaborate on industry best practices and emerging technologies". It is pertinent to mention here that Bharti and BT have a relationship going back more than two decades. In 1997, BT acquired a 21 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel, and hence Bharti's latest move to acquire a 24.5 per cent chunk in the iconic British company marks a defining moment for the Indian telecom conglomerate. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises said: "Bharti and British Telecom (BT) have an enduring relationship going back more than two decades wherein BT owned 21 per cent stake along with two board seats in Bharti Airtel Limited from 1997-2001. Today marks a significant milestone in Bharti Group's history as we invest in BT - an iconic British company". Bharti's investment in BT aims to support the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties, the release said. It noted that during the recently concluded visit of UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy to India, the UK-India Technology Security Initiative was announced to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors including telecom. Sunil Mittal said: "This investment in BT aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties. Bharti's own record of owning and operating telecom and broadband networks around the world is underpinned by placing customers, digital innovation and operational efficiency at the heart of its business". Shravin Bharti Mittal, Managing Director of Bharti Global said: "We review global investment opportunities in the world of technology from digital infrastructure to software. BT is well known to us from the long association with Bharti, so we are pleased to have this opportunity to acquire a significant stake in the company." Bharti believes that BT is poised for leadership in the telecom arena, especially home broadband services, he added. Meanwhile, BT Group, in a separate statement said the investment from Bharti is a strong vote of confidence in the future of the British telecom carrier and its strategy. Bharti to acquire about 24.5% stake in BT Group from Altice UK; deal estimated at $4 bn

The city-based <keyword id="20208728" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="non-banking-financial-company" source="keywords">non-banking financial company</keyword> had registered a standalone net profit of Rs 111.13 crore, during the corresponding quarter last year. For the financial year ending March 31, 2024, the net profit of the company surged to Rs 571.83 crore, from Rs 388.68 crore a year ago. The standalone total revenue from operations grew to Rs 1,517.50 crore, from Rs 1,234.60 crore in the same period last year. For the financial year ending March 31, 2024, the standalone total income rose to Rs 5,789.57 crore, as against Rs 4,147 crore last financial year. In a statement, the company said it continued to maintain a strong growth momentum in disbursements during FY24, primarily driven by an increase in credit demand, augmented by growth in consumption and increased distribution reach. The company's total Assets under Management (AUM) stood at Rs 25,900 crore in FY24. During the year ending March 31, 2024, the company added over 43 lakh new customers, taking the overall customer base to over 1.40 crore, the statement added. We have computers, laptops, and other devices connected to WiFi, or if you're not relying on WiFi, they use some protocol that's cellularly connected. All these things will need to work together, but the one common factor is their touchpoints to the network.There's an entire ecosystem of devices and tool sets and general employee knowledge that is necessary to be built up to support something that is centered on a single technology like 5G.While the complexity of 5G might seem daunting for companies, especially with the added challenges of existing technologies, we have a responsibility to simplify connectivity for service providers, enterprises, and, ultimately, the end users.We're also trying to remove siloes that have existed. A mobile network has always been siloed from the physical broadband network. From <keyword id="19964851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ponzi" source="keywords">Ponzi</keyword> schemes to bank frauds, the Indian government and investors have fallen victim to many financial scandals — some of which were so sordid that they can be recounted like they happened yesterday. Here’s a rundown of the most infamous scams in Indian financial history: <h2><keyword id="20713434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harshad-mehta" source="keywords">Harshad Mehta</keyword> Scam (1992) – ₹4,000 Crore </h2>Perhaps the most iconic of all Indian financial scams, Harshad Mehta was known as the "Big Bull" of the stock market. He manipulated stock prices using illegal loopholes in the banking system. By obtaining unsecured loans from banks and investing them in the stock market, Mehta artificially inflated stock prices. His bubble burst when banks demanded their money back, revealing the massive fraud. This scandal led to a major reform in India's financial markets. Vijay Mallya allegedly defaulted on loans amounting to ₹9,000 crore from various banks. He fled to the UK in 2016, leaving creditors, employees, and stakeholders in financial distress. His lavish lifestyle amidst the collapse of his airline made this scandal a high-profile case. Mallya’s extradition process is ongoing, but he remains out of reach of Indian authorities. The main impact was enhanced scrutiny of loan defaults and triggered legal reforms on extradition. <h2>Saradha Chit Fund Scam (2013) – ₹2,500 Crore </h2>The Saradha Group, operating a ponzi scheme disguised as a chit fund, promised unrealistically high returns to its investors, mostly in West Bengal and Odisha. The scam collapsed, leaving over 1.7 million people, many of whom were low-income investors, without their life savings. Politicians and celebrities were also implicated in the case. While Sudipta Sen is behind bars, not all the accomplices have been held accountable. Telecom minister A. Raja was at the centre of this controversy, which allegedly caused a loss of ₹1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer. The case was seen as a massive blow to public trust in India’s telecom sector and led to significant political fallout. Sadly, all key figures involved were acquitted despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and cancellation of 122 telecom licences. <h2><keyword id="455134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-allocation-scam" source="Orion">Coal Allocation Scam</keyword> (Coalgate) (2012) – ₹1,86,000 Crore </h2>The coal allocation scam, or "Coalgate," involved the illegal allocation of coal blocks to private companies between 2004 and 2009. The CAG of India estimated a loss of ₹1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer due to non-competitive bidding. The case came to light after an investigation by investigative journalists and was later confirmed by a report from KPMG. The case is ongoing, and the main accused are in custody. For now, regulations governing non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) have been strengthened. <h2>Yes Bank Crisis (2020) – ₹3,788 Crore </h2>Yes Bank, under its founder <keyword id="19899935" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rana-kapoor" source="keywords">Rana Kapoor</keyword>, was involved in questionable lending practices. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Shared Access worked with a football club to power headsets for fans with visual impairments.</li><li>It installed a private 5G network for fast connectivity and nearly instantaneous streaming.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sam Jackman, the chief development officer of Shared Access, a European company that develops mobile-connectivity solutions. The following has been edited for length and clarity.My company, Shared Access, has been working with the Crystal Palace Football Club in London for years to improve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-5g-technology-leaves-connectivity-legacy-in-olympic-host-cities-2024-8">connectivity</a> at its stadium, Selhurst Park.It started when Vodafone approached Shared Access to help build a system for the stadium that ensures great service even when all 30,000 fans are trying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">use their phones at once</a>.Last year, the Crystal Palace team came to us for help supporting a specific cohort of fans: those with visual impairments. In partnership with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givevision.net/">GiveVision</a>, they were working on deploying headsets that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-tech-innovations-behind-paris-olympic-games-connectivity-timeline-2024-8">stream live match footage</a> directly to fans with partial sight, allowing them to sit anywhere in the stadium but see every moment in sync with the pitch action — and they needed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">faster connectivity</a> to make it happen.<h2 id="a62d967b-58dc-4173-a02e-13c9a124d3fe">The existing networks weren't cutting it</h2>Before coming to us, the team working on the project tried running the headsets over WiFi, but there was too much latency. People using the headsets experienced everything on a slight delay, with the fans around them reacting to something on the field before they could see the action.The 4G network that we'd previously deployed with Vodafone, and even public 5G networks, weren't going to do the job. Public networks have a lot of firewalls and protocols that create additional delays, such as the need for data to travel from the stadium to the core network of a mobile operator outside the stadium and then back to the user. It's also difficult because the number of other users using the network inside the venue slows things down.We decided to install a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-wireless-connectivity-changing-airport-experience-aviation-mwc-2024-10">private 5G network</a> with an on-site core in the stadium. This allows for fully enclosed connectivity within the venue, avoiding external data transfer and eliminating the security-protocol challenges of major mobile-network operators. It provides nearly instantaneous performance, with faster speeds than 4G and even purer 5G speeds than most public users experience. Additionally, because the club has total control over who can use the network, it can ensure all the bandwidth goes to these headsets only.On September 21, we officially launched the program, making Crystal Palace FC the first football club in the world to offer a permanent vision-enhancement system at its stadium for fans with sight impairments. Since we've launched, we've seen more fans with visual impairments who previously didn't think coming to a game was worth it show up and have a great experience.<h2 id="aeed7829-1de0-4bc7-8572-0328ee6a1095">Future applications for private 5G networks</h2>While helping these fans see is more than enough justification for implementing this private network, there are also so many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-edge-computing-5g-cloud-artificial-intelligence-2024-3">opportunities</a> for how the tech could be used.For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-market-la-boqueria-5g-ar-personal-shoppers-2023-9">food and beverage vendors</a> could use the private network to power their tills, allowing the stadium to expand its food offerings to areas that previously didn't have strong enough connectivity. Security cameras could be installed in places where it's physically too difficult to get power and fiber wiring. Broadcasters may be able to use private 5G to get footage out more quickly, and without having to deploy as much equipment to the stadium, which would reduce the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-how-5g-tech-could-curb-environmental-impact-2024-7">carbon footprint</a> of their work.It doesn't have to be just sports, either. I'd suggest any kind of venue to consider: What are your problems? What are the things you'd love to do but think you can't because of connectivity?Ultimately, having the foundation of this private network allows so much room for creativity in terms of what you can layer on top of it. Twelve months ago, I'd never heard of GiveVision's headsets, and it had never thought about using a private 5G network, so this collaboration ended up being perfect. Who knows what other applications are out there? I hope other partners and vendors collaborate just as imaginatively to come up with possibilities.

Rather than build a series of new venues, existing ones have been repurposed. <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/infrastructures">Only one new permanent venue was constructed</a>, and there's more <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/organising-more-circular-games">renting than buying</a> when it comes to equipment like furniture to reduce waste. Sustainability initiatives also extend to the 5G technology powering the Olympic Games.Orange, the telecommunications provider for the Paris Games, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.orange.com/en/allconnected/paris2024/paris-2024-how-orange-will-limit-its-environmental-impact">has set itself the goal</a> of limiting its carbon emissions to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. If met, Orange's carbon emissions would account for less than 1% of the total estimated emissions of the 2024 Olympics.It's the latest example of how 5G providers are supporting sustainability efforts at global-scale live events."As sustainability initiatives around large public venues gather steam, we know IT teams are being asked to find ways to contribute to their organization's decarbonization efforts," said Kevin Swank, the product-marketing director at CommScope, a service provider that has worked on sports stadiums in France, Germany, and the US.<h2 id="1d0215d6-49e6-4444-b194-294cf1e5f1bd">Environmentally friendly technology that can support more fans</h2>Though 5G systems require infrastructure installation, their technology is more sustainable than older connectivity systems like analog distributed antenna systems, Swank said.Digital 5G systems use less power and less cooling than older systems, which need large amounts of power and cabling to run, Swank told Business Insider. And because 5G systems run digitally, they don't require as much physical infrastructure as their predecessors, Swank added.He said he witnessed the positive impact — on the environment and the fan experience — when CommScope updated the internet infrastructure at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.commscope.com/globalassets/digizuite/965502-atandt-stadium-cs-115933-en.pdf">AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas</a>, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, in 2020."The venue was reaching the performance limits of its equipment, and its current network just couldn't keep up with the growing demands of a mobile-device-centric fan base," Swank told BI. The stadium needed a 5G network that could support augmented-reality features and mobile-ordering capabilities for concessions for up to 100,000 visitors at a time.By switching to 5G, the stadium's network performance increased tenfold, while its power use went down by about 87% and its cooling requirements decreased by up to 75%, a project report from CommScope said. Those reductions equate to over 100 metric tons in CO2 emissions savings a year, Swank said.The stadium's 5G system resulted in just five equipment storage racks compared with the 30 to 40 racks previously required for its analog equipment.Because of these advantages, 5G is quickly gaining steam within the entertainment industry as events continue to grow in scale and attendees expect more seamless experiences.<h2 id="4de8c9b0-599e-4fa3-9e87-59f5acb6ad1c">Recycling 5G equipment for more sustainability</h2>To work toward its carbon-emissions goal for the Paris Games, Orange decreased its equipment manufacturing and infrastructure-deployment footprint. Orange, in partnership with the consultancy Carbone4, estimated that 86% of its global footprint came from those two areas.For the Paris Olympics, the company is using more local suppliers and shipping bulky items by sea rather than air to reduce emissions. Orange said it planned to rent one-quarter of its equipment and estimated that 75% of the equipment would be reused or redeployed after the Games.Generally, the 5G networks used at sports venues' large events can be reused after the events end and the increased capacity is no longer needed, said Kelvin Chaffer, the CEO of Lifecycle Software, which provides support systems for network operators."By designing infrastructure that can be repurposed for other community uses postevent, and implementing green technologies and sustainable practices," Chaffer said. He added that this approach gives large sporting event organizers the ability "to minimize the environmental impact of event-triggered infrastructure projects."

How 5G technology is helping curb carbon emissions and waste at the Paris Games
